Star Wars Battlefront II (the Electronic Arts game released in November 2017) can still be played online on PC, PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series X|S, provided you have an entitled copy or eligible subscription access, current updates, an internet connection and an EA Account. Console players also need their platform’s online-multiplayer subscription: PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate on Xbox. PC, PlayStation and Xbox do not share cross-play, so friends must use the same platform family.
Use the platform-specific steps below, then choose an online mode from the game’s Play/Multiplayer area. Arcade is offline practice, not an online match.

What do I need before starting?
Confirm these prerequisites before troubleshooting matchmaking or buying another subscription:
- The correct game: this guide covers EA’s November 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II, not an earlier or similarly named release.
- A platform entitlement: EA lists PC access through the EA app, Steam or Epic Games, plus PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. The Xbox listing covers Xbox One and Series X|S. Sony lists the PS4 game as playable on PS5, with a warning that some PS4 features may be absent or behave differently.
- All game updates: let the launcher or console finish downloading patches before opening an online mode.
- Internet access and an EA Account: sign in to the EA Account linked to the platform account. An EA Account is separate from PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass.
- The console multiplayer plan, where applicable: PlayStation’s US listing says “PS Plus required for online play.” Xbox’s current US listing says online console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. These requirements are separate from whether the game is included in a catalog.
Child or limited platform accounts may be unable to link to EA for online play. If the account is supervised, check its communication, age and third-party-service permissions before changing game settings.

How do I play Battlefront II online on PC?
On PC, install the entitled copy from the EA app, Steam or Epic Games, allow the EA account link, update the game and select an online mode from the Play/Multiplayer area. Windows players do not need an Xbox console multiplayer subscription.
- Verify the entitlement. Start with the storefront where you bought the game or receive access. Steam and Epic players follow EA’s account-linking flow the first time the game launches. If access comes through PC Game Pass, EA says the included EA Play benefit uses the EA app, so install that app when prompted.
- Install and patch the game. Leave the launcher open until downloads and any required verification finish. A partially updated client can fail before matchmaking begins.
- Sign in to the linked EA Account. Use the same EA Account connected to the Steam, Epic or EA app entitlement. If the wrong account opens, stop and resolve the account link rather than creating another EA Account; duplicate links can make ownership and friends lists appear inconsistent.
- Open an online menu. In the game, go to the Play area and choose Multiplayer or another mode that explicitly starts matchmaking. Blast and Hero Showdown are smaller, focused choices; Galactic Assault is a larger objective mode.
- Wait for matchmaking. Queue times vary by region, platform and time of day. No current regional population or queue-speed figure is established here, so a long wait is not proof that the service is offline.
Do not select Arcade when you want a live match. EA describes Arcade as offline practice. The historical route for Co-Op was Play > Multiplayer > Operations; menu labels can change, so use the current in-game description rather than relying on an old screenshot.

How do I play Battlefront II online on PlayStation?
Use the PS4 version on a PS4 or a compatible PS5, keep PS Plus active on the playing account, finish updates and sign in to the linked EA Account. EA Play access does not replace PS Plus for online multiplayer.
- Check the console and edition. Install EA’s 2017 PS4 game. Sony says the PS4 version can run on PS5, but its compatibility notice allows for missing PS4 features or unexpected behavior on the newer console.
- Confirm PS Plus on the correct account. The US PlayStation Store listing states that PS Plus is required for online play. Make sure the account launching the game has the necessary membership or an enabled console-sharing arrangement recognized by PlayStation.
- Update the game and system. Install every pending Battlefront II and console update before attempting to join a session.
- Link EA when asked. Sign in with the EA Account associated with the PlayStation account. If a child or restricted account cannot complete the link, the restriction must be addressed at the account level; reinstalling the game will not create permission.
- Choose a multiplayer mode. From Play, select Multiplayer and then an online mode such as Blast, Hero Showdown, Galactic Assault or another mode currently presented by the game. Avoid Arcade for online play.
If you own the game but access it through EA Play, treat that as the game entitlement only. PlayStation’s online-multiplayer requirement still applies independently.
How do I play Battlefront II online on Xbox?
Install the Xbox One version, which Xbox lists as playable on Xbox One and Series X|S, link the Xbox account to EA and keep Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate active for console multiplayer. EA Play by itself is not a substitute for the qualifying Xbox console plan.

- Confirm the Xbox entitlement. Use the Xbox listing or the account that owns the game. A catalog inclusion and a purchased copy are different entitlements, so check which one your account actually has.
- Maintain a qualifying subscription. Xbox’s current US product page names Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate for online multiplayer on console. The wording replaces the older “Xbox Live Gold” terminology found on legacy EA pages.
- Install updates. Allow the console to complete the game and system updates. Restarting before a patch finishes can leave the client on a version that cannot join current sessions.
- Link the Xbox and EA accounts. Follow the in-game or EA account prompt. Use the EA Account you intend to keep; switching accounts later can affect entitlements, friends and progression associations.
- Start matchmaking. Open Play, choose Multiplayer and select an online mode. Galactic Assault suits large objective battles, while Blast and Hero Showdown provide more focused matches.
Ultimate includes EA Play, and PC Game Pass includes PC EA Play according to EA’s account guidance. Those benefits do not create PC-versus-Xbox cross-play, and EA Play alone does not satisfy Xbox’s separate console-multiplayer requirement for this game.
Can PC, PlayStation and Xbox players play together?
No. Battlefront II does not support cross-play between PC, PlayStation and Xbox. EA staff member EA_Ataashi stated that players cannot play with people on different platforms, and linking the same EA Account does not change that limitation.
There are two compatibility details that are easy to confuse with cross-play:
- Same console family: the PS4 game running on PS5 remains within PlayStation, and the Xbox title running on Xbox One and Series X|S remains within Xbox.
- Different platform families: a PC player cannot join a PlayStation or Xbox player’s match, even when both accounts use EA services.
Before arranging a squad, confirm that every friend is on PC, PlayStation or Xbox as a group. The exact current invitation and party labels can vary by platform interface; use the game’s present friends or party controls without assuming an old button sequence.
Which online mode should I choose?
Mode choice affects the scale and style of a match, not cross-play or subscription requirements.

Blast
Blast is a focused trooper-versus-trooper mode and a straightforward place to learn movement, weapons and objectives without the scale of Galactic Assault.
Hero Showdown
Hero Showdown centers on smaller hero matchups. It is useful when you want character abilities and close engagements rather than a large battlefield.
Galactic Assault
Galactic Assault is the large, objective-based option. EA’s 2017 launch announcement described support for up to 40 players in this mode. That is a supported match size, not a statement about how many people are online now or how quickly a queue will fill.
Co-Op
EA forum guidance historically placed Co-Op at Play > Multiplayer > Operations. Because no current interface walkthrough is verified, look for the mode’s current in-game tile or description rather than assuming the menu has not moved.
Arcade
Arcade is offline practice. It can help you learn controls and heroes, but entering Arcade will not connect you to an online multiplayer session.

Does owning the game differ from using a membership?
Yes. Ownership, catalog access and permission to play online are separate checks.
- Owned copy: your EA app, Steam, Epic, PlayStation or Xbox account has a license for the game. You still need the platform’s online-multiplayer plan on console.
- EA Play or another catalog benefit: the service may provide access while the title remains eligible in your region. Catalog availability can change, so verify the current listing before relying on it.
- Console multiplayer permission: PlayStation Plus is required on PlayStation; Xbox requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. A catalog benefit does not automatically grant that console permission.
- PC access: PC Game Pass may provide PC EA Play access through the EA app. Do not buy an Xbox console subscription merely because you are playing on Windows.
Storefront prices and catalog contents change by region and date. The requirements above reflect US platform listings checked October 30, 2026; other regions can display different availability or plan names.
How many players can an online match support?
Published capacity figures describe the game’s supported match size, not current population or matchmaking speed.

None of these figures confirms a live player count in your region. A queue can be slow even when the service is functioning, particularly outside peak times or in a less-populated playlist.

- Check EA service status. EA maintains a Battlefront II server-status entry. It is a place to check for an outage, but a status page alone does not provide a regional matchmaking estimate.
- Confirm the game is updated. Compare the installed version with the launcher or console’s current update state. Complete downloads, then restart the game.
- Confirm internet access. Test the console or PC connection outside the game. If other services fail, solve the network problem before changing EA settings.
- Verify the platform subscription. PlayStation requires PS Plus for online play. Xbox requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for online console multiplayer. PC does not require an Xbox console plan.
- Check account links. Ensure the active platform account is linked to the intended EA Account. A wrong or duplicate EA login can make the game appear unentitled or hide friends.
- Check account restrictions. Child and limited sub-accounts may not be allowed to link for online play. Review the platform’s family controls and EA account permissions.
- Try another supported mode. If one playlist is quiet, try Blast, Hero Showdown or Galactic Assault. A long wait in one queue is not proof that every online service is unavailable.
- Confirm platform family with friends. A PC player cannot join PlayStation or Xbox friends, and console generations within a family should not be confused with cross-platform support.
If the entitlement, account link and subscription are all correct but the game still refuses to connect, record the exact error text and check EA’s current help and service-status guidance before unlinking any account. Unlinking can create new entitlement or progression problems.
Can I use cloud play or EA Play to avoid a console subscription?
Not for ordinary Xbox console multiplayer. Xbox lists cloud play through Ultimate, while EA separately identifies EA Play benefits; neither statement establishes PC-versus-Xbox cross-play or removes the console online-multiplayer requirement for the installed Xbox game.
