Procedurally generated platformers are learned by adapting, not by memorizing a single stage. Build a repeatable observe–act–review loop: calibrate movement, scout the visible room, solve one short section at a time, preserve escape options, and turn every death into one specific lesson. The layout may change on the next run, but movement rules, enemy tells, room rhythms, connectivity and risk patterns can still become familiar.

Expect early attempts to function as reconnaissance. Your goal is not to complete a perfect run immediately; it is to improve the quality of your decisions while the game reveals how its systems interact.

What changes when every platforming level is generated?

In a fixed platformer, memorizing a sequence can eventually carry you through: jump here, wait for that enemy, take the upper route, then repeat. A procedural platformer shifts the durable skill from remembering locations to recognizing situations. You practice jump control, timing, hazard recognition, route selection and decision-making under uncertainty.

“Procedurally generated” does not mean “completely random.” The official Spelunky 2 interview describes room templates and a generated “safe” path to the exit. That is a useful model, not a universal guarantee: generation can vary the arrangement while preserving rules for reachability, rhythm and connectivity. An academic platform-generation paper likewise emphasizes repetition, rhythm and connected spaces. Look for that designed structure inside the variation.

Generated levels can also be interactive. Spelunky 2 combines destructible terrain, liquids, items, monsters and traps. A route that looks safe before you move can change after you shift an object, trigger an enemy, open a passage or alter the environment. When several systems overlap, slow down and ask what your action could cause next, not only whether it reaches the next platform.

What is the best way to learn a procedurally generated platformer?

Use this six-part observe–act–review loop on every run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Calibrate controls. Learn jump height, horizontal acceleration, air control, fall behavior, attack or dodge timing, and what happens when you take damage.
  2. Scout before committing. Read the visible room, identify hazards and exits, and locate a landing or retreat point before crossing a gap.
  3. Advance in short sections. Treat each room or platform sequence as a local problem. Move only after identifying the next safe landing or escape option.
  4. Preserve optionality. Keep a retreat route, avoid spending limited resources prematurely, and delay dangerous interactions until you understand their consequences.
  5. Review every death. Keep one or two specific lessons—a missed enemy tell, a timing window, a bad route choice or a resource error—and apply them on the next attempt.
  6. Tune controls and challenge. Remap buttons or enable assist features when they remove an unwanted barrier without removing the part of the challenge you enjoy.

This loop prevents two common mistakes: treating every death as meaningless luck, and trying to memorize a layout that will not return in the same form.

How should I calibrate movement before chasing rewards?

Spend the opening safe area learning the character’s verbs before you pursue treasure, secrets or speed. The exact tests depend on the game, but you should answer these questions:

  • How high and how far can a standing jump reach?
  • How quickly does horizontal movement accelerate and stop?
  • Can you correct your position in midair, and does the correction weaken near the jump’s peak?
  • Can a jump, dash, roll or attack be buffered before landing?
  • What happens if you release a directional input during a jump?
  • Does a dodge pass through enemies, projectiles or hazards, or merely move you?
  • How much control remains after taking damage, and can knockback send you off a ledge?
  • Which actions cling to, bounce from, or pass through one-way platforms?

Use a low-risk gap or empty room to test one variable at a time. For example, make a short jump, then a maximum-distance jump; repeat while holding a direction and while releasing it. If the game has a training room, use it. If not, treat the first few rooms as a laboratory rather than forcing progress.

Write down only practical boundaries: “full jump reaches the far ledge,” “dodge does not cross spikes,” or “attack stops horizontal movement.” These notes remain useful even when the next level’s geometry changes.

How do I read a generated room before moving?

Start from safe ground and scan the room in layers. First identify the immediate landing zone. Then locate the next place where you can stop safely. Only after those two points are clear should you plan the entire crossing.

  1. Mark the destination. Find the next platform, door, ladder, wall or other confirmed objective.
  2. Check the approach. Look for moving hazards, one-way platforms, narrow ceilings, enemy patrols and surfaces that alter your jump.
  3. Find a recovery point. Ask where you can stand if your timing is late. A route with a safe intermediate platform is often better than a direct leap.
  4. Scan vertically. Generated rooms may hide an upper or lower route, a breakable passage or a platform that becomes visible only after the camera scrolls.
  5. Observe cycles. Wait for an enemy, projectile or platform to complete one movement cycle before committing. A short pause can reveal the timing window.
  6. Identify the exit and the retreat. Know both where you are going and where you can go if the room changes unexpectedly.

Do not assume that the route with the most loot or the shortest apparent distance is correct. Prefer the path that gives you information while preserving an escape option. Once the room is understood, you can choose speed deliberately.

How do I choose between a safe route and a risky shortcut?

Compare routes by more than distance. A useful decision is the route’s information value versus its cost if you are wrong.

Question Safer choice When a risk may be justified
Can you see the landing? Choose the visible platform or wait for the camera to reveal it. A blind jump is reasonable only when the game has taught you that the gap is a consistent, recoverable pattern.
Do you have a retreat? Use a route with an intermediate ledge or open floor. Take a narrow route when the reward is substantial and you have a defensive option.
What does the route teach? Prefer a path that exposes enemy timing or room structure safely. Choose a secret when you can afford the health, ammunition or time it may consume.
What changes after interaction? Observe an object, switch or enemy before activating it. Trigger it when the resulting route is understood and you have an exit.

Think in terms of optionality. A health item, bomb, key, dash or defensive cooldown is not merely a tool for the current obstacle; it can preserve future choices. Spending it to remove a minor threat may leave you with no answer for the next room.

How should I handle interacting systems such as terrain, liquids and traps?

When systems interact, pause between cause and effect. A destructible block may open a shortcut but also release an enemy. A liquid flow may alter a jump, carry an item or make a lower route hazardous. An enemy can activate a trap that was harmless while it was off-screen. These are not failures of randomness; they are second-order consequences.

Use a three-question check before touching an uncertain object:

  1. What is the immediate effect? Does it break, move, activate, damage, reveal or block something?
  2. What could it affect next? Consider enemies, projectiles, liquids, doors, platforms and your return path.
  3. Where can I stand if the result is bad? Do not activate an unknown system from the only ledge in the room.

When possible, test interactions from a distance or after clearing nearby enemies. If the game provides throwable objects, expendable tools or a safe reset point, use them to gather information rather than to chase a marginal reward.

Should I explore or rush to the exit?

Separate exploration from execution. During exploration, stop to identify routes, enemy cycles and resource costs. During execution, repeat a section you already understand with deliberate timing. Rushing while you are still gathering information combines two problems and makes deaths difficult to diagnose.

Exploration is usually worthwhile when it reveals a map connection, a recovery platform, a permanent unlock or a safe way around a hazard. It is less attractive when it exposes you to several unknown systems at once or consumes a resource needed for the exit. If the game allows backtracking, mark unexplored branches mentally and return after securing the main route.

Once a section is understood, speed can become a strategic choice. Move quickly through familiar space to reduce exposure, but slow down again whenever the layout introduces a new combination of hazards.

What should I learn after I die?

Review the death immediately, but keep the review narrow. Identify the final mistake and the earlier decision that made it likely.

  • Timing error: You jumped before an enemy completed its cycle. Lesson: wait for the tell, then commit.
  • Route error: You chose a blind or cramped approach with no recovery point. Lesson: use the intermediate platform or scout the alternate route.
  • Resource error: You spent a defensive item on a minor threat. Lesson: reserve it for the hazard that can actually end the run.
  • Information error: You entered a room before seeing its upper or lower section. Lesson: move the camera or inspect from safe ground first.
  • Control error: The default button layout caused a missed input or strain. Lesson: remap the action or change the input device.

Keep one or two lessons, not a complete transcript. On the next run, deliberately create a safe opportunity to apply the lesson. If the same death repeats, split the problem further: first practice reaching the ledge, then practice the enemy timing, then combine them.

What carries over when the level does not?

Procedural games often make knowledge the main persistent upgrade, even when the physical route resets. You can carry forward movement boundaries, enemy tells, room rhythms, resource priorities and the conditions that make a shortcut safe. Some games also preserve unlocks or upgrades, but the exact persistence rules vary by title; check the game’s own documentation rather than assuming that every run starts identically.

Build a personal pattern library:

  • Room shapes that commonly place an exit above, below or behind the starting point.
  • Enemy tells that precede a charge, projectile or leap.
  • Platform sequences that reward waiting rather than continuous movement.
  • Interactions that open routes but create a second hazard.
  • Signals that distinguish a deliberate secret from a dangerous dead end.

This is pattern recognition, not memorization of coordinates. The next run may use different rooms, but the same kind of decision can recur.

Which play style should I use: cautious, exploratory or fast?

Choose a style according to the game’s persistence and your current objective. A cautious style is best while learning controls or a new biome. An exploratory style suits runs where you need to discover connections, items or secrets. A fast style is appropriate after you understand the route and want to reduce exposure or practice execution.

Should I use a controller for a procedurally generated platformer?

No input device is mandatory. Use the device that gives you the clearest, most repeatable control over directional movement and timing. A controller can be useful when an analog stick, triggers or a familiar button layout makes small adjustments easier, but keyboard, touchscreen and other inputs can work when configured well.

Compatibility is platform-specific. Dead Cells’ official support information confirms controller support and specifically advises iOS players to use an MFi-certified controller. If you buy one, verify that certification, the operating system, connection method and the game’s supported input list before purchase. Compatibility can differ between mobile, desktop and console versions.

Do not change hardware to solve a problem that remapping would fix. First try moving jump, attack, dodge or interact to positions you can reach without releasing movement. Test the new layout in a safe room and keep the arrangement consistent across runs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Can assist mode make the game easier without ruining it?

Yes. Assist features are tools for removing an unwanted barrier, not a test of legitimacy. Keep the parts of the challenge you enjoy and reduce the parts that create pain, fatigue or an avoidable input bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft accessibility guidance recommends configurable controls and communicating information in more than one way. In practice, enable captions, readable UI, color-vision options, visual attack indicators or textual feedback when they improve hazard recognition. Remapping is both a customization and an accessibility feature for players who have difficulty operating a particular control.

Dead Cells’ support materials document an Options area with accessibility settings including Assist mode and Auto-hit mode. GameAccess also describes its Assist Mode and remapping-related options. Names and availability can differ by version and platform, so check the current in-game Options menu. Change one setting at a time, then decide whether the resulting challenge still matches your goal.

How do I diagnose a run that feels unfair?

First determine whether the problem is information, execution or system interaction. If you cannot see the landing or enemy tell, the game is presenting an information problem; look for a camera adjustment, alternate route, caption or visual indicator. If you can see the solution but miss the input, it is an execution problem; practice the movement, remap the control or slow the section with an assist setting. If the outcome changes after an object, enemy or liquid reacts, it is an interaction problem; test the trigger from a safer position.

Also check whether you are carrying an incorrect assumption from a previous run. A platform that was stationary may now move, a familiar room shape may have a different exit, and a resource that seemed optional may be required for a later shortcut. Treat the current room as authoritative while using your stored knowledge to generate hypotheses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do on a first run?

  1. Open the control settings and confirm movement, jump, attack, dodge and interact inputs.
  2. Use the first safe space to test jump distance, air control, fall behavior and damage recovery.
  3. Read each room from a stable platform before crossing it.
  4. Identify the next landing and at least one retreat or recovery option.
  5. Observe one enemy or moving hazard cycle before entering its range.
  6. Spend limited resources only when you understand the benefit and the exit cost.
  7. Pause when terrain, liquids, items, monsters or traps can affect one another.
  8. After death, record one timing, route, hazard, resource or control lesson.
  9. On the next run, deliberately apply that lesson before chasing a new objective.

The purpose of the first run is to establish a reliable process. Completion may come later, but every room should leave you better prepared for the next variation.

How we selected these recommendations

The guidance focuses on skills that remain useful across generated layouts: movement precision, readable route structure, enemy and hazard timing, system interaction, risk versus reward, run persistence and input flexibility. The official Spelunky 2 interview supplies examples of room templates, a generated safe path, challenge and interacting systems; the platform-generation research contributes repetition, rhythm and connectivity; Microsoft guidance supports remapping and multimodal accessibility; and Dead Cells support materials provide a concrete example of controller compatibility and assist settings. These sources describe design and options, not a universal win rate or a guaranteed number of attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are procedurally generated platformers supposed to be memorized?

Memorize rules and patterns rather than coordinates. Enemy tells, jump limits, room rhythms and the consequences of interactions can carry over even when the exact platforms change.

How do I get better if every run gives me unfamiliar rooms?

Set one learning objective per run, such as identifying dodge timing or preserving a retreat route. A focused objective turns unfamiliar layouts into repeated practice instead of an unstructured sequence of failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when a jump looks impossible?

Stop and verify whether the intended solution is a different height, a moving platform, a wall route, a destructible passage or an interaction that changes the geometry. If no safe information-gathering action exists, leave the branch and return with a resource or ability that preserves recovery.

Is using a controller better than using a keyboard or touchscreen?

The better device is the one that gives you consistent directional control and comfortable access to timing-critical actions. Check the specific game and platform for support; on iOS, Dead Cells’ support guidance calls for an MFi-certified controller.

Can accessibility settings change the intended challenge?

They can, which is why selective use is helpful. Keep settings that remove strain or improve hazard communication, and leave settings off when they remove a decision or execution challenge you specifically want to practice.
