For a first playthrough, follow the story in this order: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance HD, χ Back Cover, 0.2 Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind. Watch the HD movie compilations for 358/2 Days and Re:coded rather than expecting full playable games in the current collection. This route keeps the story understandable without putting the series’ prequels ahead of the games that introduce its central characters and conflicts.
The point is not to follow every event in fictional chronology. Kingdom Hearts is a continuing Sora-centered story, and a release-aware route lets you meet the characters and story rules in a more newcomer-friendly progression. Square Enix has announced Kingdom Hearts IV for late 2027, giving new players a reason to catch up, but there is no official mandatory play order.

What order should I play Kingdom Hearts games in?
Use the recommended route below if this is your first time through the series. It follows the official collection’s grouping while placing 358/2 Days after Kingdom Hearts II, where its backstory is less likely to interrupt the early main-story progression. The order also makes clear which stops are games, which are films or cutscene compilations, and which item is DLC.
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. Start here. It establishes the central characters and the series’ world rules, giving you the foundation for the continuing Sora-centered narrative.
- Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. Play this next; it explains the transition into Kingdom Hearts II. Placing it before KH II keeps that connecting story in sequence instead of asking you to go back for it later.
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. Complete the second major adventure before turning to the 358/2 Days backstory. It is the next numbered-game step in this newcomer-friendly route.
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Watch the HD cutscene compilation after KH II. The current collection does not present this as a full playable game, and its placement here lets you take in the backstory after the main second-game experience.
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. Although it is a prequel in story chronology, it fits better here for most newcomers than as the series’ starting point. You will have first encountered the core story and characters through the earlier adventures.
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. Watch its HD cutscene compilation after Birth by Sleep; it serves as a concise bridge toward the later saga. Treat it as story material, not as another full-length playable stop in this collection.
- Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD. Play this before moving on to the 2.8 material. It is the playable entry at the start of the route’s next collection section.
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover. Watch the movie for background context. It is included as a movie, not a conventional game.
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage. Play it after χ Back Cover as the immediate lead-in to KH III.
- Kingdom Hearts III. Play the main game before its Re Mind DLC. This is the main numbered-game endpoint of the catch-up route.
- Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind. Finish with the DLC, which Square Enix packages alongside KH III as “KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC).” Play the main game first, then the add-on.
This sequence is useful as a practical checklist: play the entries labeled as games, watch the items identified as movie compilations, and leave Re Mind until after the KH III campaign. It avoids two common sources of confusion: assuming every item in a collection is playable in the same way, and treating story chronology as the only sensible order for a first visit.

Why not play the games in story chronology?
Kingdom Hearts is built around a continuing Sora-centered narrative, not a simple timeline in which every prequel should come first. Beginning with Birth by Sleep may put events earlier on the fictional timeline, but it skips the introductions and story setup that make the first adventures useful context. For a new player, “earliest event” and “best first game” are not automatically the same thing.
For the same reason, the suggested route leaves 358/2 Days until after KH II. Treating it as contextual backstory at that point makes for a smoother first run than interrupting the early mainline sequence. This is a newcomer-friendly recommendation based on the official collection’s contents and grouping, not a claim that Square Enix has designated a single mandatory order.

The recommended sequence keeps the numbered adventures and their connecting material in a progression that can be followed without repeatedly jumping backward to earlier fictional events. It also preserves the key bridge: Re:Chain of Memories comes before KH II, while 358/2 Days follows KH II.
Which entries do I watch instead of play?
In the current collection, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations, and χ Back Cover is a movie. They are not presented there as full-length playable entries, so plan to watch them as story material rather than looking for the same kind of game experience as the playable stops. That distinction matters when estimating how you want to spend your time and when choosing a collection: a bundle can contain several formats, not only games.
- 358/2 Days: Watch after Kingdom Hearts II.
- Re:coded: Watch after Birth by Sleep.
- χ Back Cover: Watch after Dream Drop Distance HD and before 0.2 Birth by Sleep.
These compilations let you follow the route’s story context without treating every item in the collection as a conventional game. If you want a shorter catch-up, the two cutscene compilations are the most obvious places to change the format, but skipping them also means leaving out their story material. Watching them is the closer fit for a complete first pass; skipping is a time-saving choice, not a claim that the stories do not matter.

If you are deciding what is playable, distinguish it from Dream Drop Distance HD and 0.2, which the collection lists as games.

What is the best Kingdom Hearts collection to buy?
Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is the clearest single product recommendation for someone who wants the core pre-KH IV console route together. It organizes the material across three named sections and includes the playable games, the story compilations or movie, and the KH III expansion needed to follow the route above. That is more convenient than trying to identify each item separately, though buyers should still verify exactly which format and edition is offered where they live.
| Collection section | Contents | How it fits the route |
|---|---|---|
| HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | Kingdom Hearts Final Mix; Re:Chain of Memories; Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix; 358/2 Days HD cutscene compilation; Birth by Sleep Final Mix; Re:coded HD cutscene compilation | Start through Re:coded |
| HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | Dream Drop Distance HD; χ Back Cover movie; 0.2 Birth by Sleep | Play after Re:coded and before KH III |
| Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind | Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind DLC | Complete the route |
Square Enix announced physical and digital editions across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Microsoft Store on Windows. It also identifies an individual Nintendo Switch version of HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX. Edition and platform details can differ by region, so check the listing for your location before buying; the announcement does not establish that every individual item is sold in every format or market.
Compare buying options on four practical points. Narrative completeness: does the option include the side-story movies and prequel material, or only selected numbered games? Playability: remember that 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations in the collection, and χ Back Cover is a movie. Platform fit: check the announcement and current regional listing for the system you own. Physical versus digital access: both types of edition have been announced, but actual regional listings and stock are not guaranteed by that announcement.
Time commitment is another comparison point: the complete route is substantially longer than a numbered-games-only run, because it includes prequel and side-story material as well as the numbered games. No universal price or stock recommendation follows from the announced collection formats; those details change by region and seller. Choose the broad collection if your priority is having the included route together, and inspect the contents before choosing a narrower purchase.

What can I skip if I only want the main route?
If you are prioritizing a shorter run, the numbered adventures are the central spine, but the side-story material supplies context that a numbered-games-only route leaves out. There is no need to pretend every entry has the same format or role: the current collection explicitly presents two entries as cutscene compilations and one as a movie. A shorter route is therefore a tradeoff between time and narrative completeness, not a different official checklist.
For a first playthrough, the best compromise is to keep the recommended order and watch those compilations rather than skip them entirely. If you do skip them, continue with the next listed entry instead of trying to reconstruct an unverified mobile-era chronology as mandatory background. The official collection confirms χ Back Cover, but it does not establish a complete current access path for every mobile-era narrative component. Do not assume an omitted mobile-era component is required or readily available based on this console collection alone.
The most straightforward choice is to use the complete route when you want all the material Square Enix groups in the collection, and the shorter numbered-games route when your priority is reducing the amount to play and watch. In either case, retain the two sequencing points that most directly support the main progression: play Re:Chain of Memories before KH II, and place 358/2 Days after KH II if you choose to watch it.
What should I finish before Kingdom Hearts IV?
As of October 30, 2026, Square Enix has announced Kingdom Hearts IV for late 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its announcement describes Sora and familiar characters journeying through Quadratum; the PlayStation listing describes Sora awakening in the unfamiliar modern metropolis while Donald and Goofy search for him. The official description says: “KINGDOM HEARTS IV follows protagonist Sora and some familiar characters as they journey through the mysterious city of Quadratum, where dark creatures known as the Heartless are causing havoc.”
For the console catch-up covered here, finish Kingdom Hearts III and then Re Mind. That gives you the main KH III adventure and its associated DLC before the announced next game. The late-2027 window is the announced schedule, not a guarantee of a particular launch day. A release date can change, so treat the window as current scheduling information rather than a reason to rush through the story.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.
The collection is designed to bring the main console route together, but it does not settle every question about access to mobile-era story components. If you see a proposed checklist that treats those components as obligatory, distinguish that advice from what the collection itself confirms. This route covers the listed console material through KH III and Re Mind without claiming a complete access path for every story item across the franchise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the full route necessary for a first playthrough?
No single official order is established as mandatory, but the complete route is the clearest way to follow the console story without omitting its listed backstory and bridge material. It is not necessary to play every item as a conventional game: two entries are cutscene compilations and χ Back Cover is a movie. The series had shipped more than 39 million units worldwide as of Square Enix’s August 15, 2026 announcement, a sign of its long-running scope rather than a measure of how much a newcomer must play.
For the best balance of clarity and practicality, follow the eleven-step order at the top, watch the compilations, and complete Re Mind after KH III. If you need to shorten the catch-up, recognize what you are leaving out and avoid mistaking a shorter route for a universally prescribed one.

Do I play 358/2 Days before or after Kingdom Hearts 2?
For a first playthrough, watch 358/2 Days after Kingdom Hearts II. That placement treats it as contextual backstory and avoids interrupting the early main-story progression.
Can I skip the Kingdom Hearts movie games?
You can choose a shorter route, but 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations in the current collection, while χ Back Cover is a movie. Watching them keeps their story material in your catch-up; skipping them means leaving that material out.

What is the best Kingdom Hearts collection to buy?
KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is the clearest single collection to consider for the core pre-KH IV console route. It groups HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. Check your regional listing for the platform and edition available to you.
Do I need Re Mind before Kingdom Hearts 4?
The recommended route is to finish Kingdom Hearts III and then play Re Mind. Square Enix packages the DLC alongside KH III, making it the final stop in this pre-KH IV console catch-up plan.
Is Kingdom Hearts IV confirmed for PC?
Yes. Square Enix’s October 30, 2026 announcement lists PC alongside Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It specifies PC via Microsoft Store on Windows for the collection, but that collection detail should not be confused with a more specific KH IV storefront listing.
Does Kingdom Hearts IV take place in Quadratum?
Square Enix describes Quadratum as the mysterious city where Sora and familiar characters journey, and the PlayStation listing describes it as a modern metropolis. The announcement establishes it as part of the game’s premise, but it does not provide a full plot summary.
How many Kingdom Hearts games are in the collection?
The collection bundles playable games, cutscene compilations, a movie, and DLC across its three named sections. Counting every included component as a separate “game” can therefore be misleading; the collection contents table distinguishes the formats.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and follow the release-aware route through Kingdom Hearts III, then play Re Mind. Watch 358/2 Days, Re:coded, and χ Back Cover in their recommended places rather than expecting them to be full playable games. KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is the clearest single bundle to consider, but check your regional platform and edition listing before buying.
