For a first playthrough, finish Dragon Age: Origins while adding The Stone Prisoner, Warden’s Keep, and Return to Ostagar during that campaign. Then play Awakening, followed by The Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt. Leliana’s Song works either before Origins for strict chronology or afterward for better character context, while The Darkspawn Chronicles is an optional alternate campaign.
Awakening can import your Origins Warden. Dragon Age II can import Origins decisions, but you do not play as that Warden in the sequel. Dragon Age Keep is different again: it uses a manually configured world state for Inquisition, not a direct DAO or DA2 save-file import.

What is the correct Dragon Age: Origins and DLC order?
The core continuity is Origins → Awakening → The Golems of Amgarrak → Witch Hunt. Three add-ons belong inside the original campaign, one is a prequel-style side story, and one is an alternate scenario rather than a continuation of the Warden’s story.
| Entry | What it is | Recommended placement | Continuity note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Age: Origins | Main campaign with six possible origin stories | First | Establishes your Warden and the world state |
| The Stone Prisoner | Origins-era add-on | During Origins | Fits the main campaign’s party and progression |
| Warden’s Keep | Origins-era add-on | During Origins | Belongs to the base-game period |
| Return to Ostagar | Origins-era add-on | During Origins | Best treated as part of the original campaign |
| Leliana’s Song | Standalone story about Leliana’s earlier life | Before or after Origins | Chronological prequel, but context improves after meeting Leliana |
| Awakening | Major expansion | After Origins | Continues the Grey Warden story |
| The Golems of Amgarrak | Standalone Warden-focused campaign | After Awakening | Cleanest placement in the post-Origins sequence |
| Witch Hunt | Standalone Warden-focused campaign | After Golems of Amgarrak | Natural endpoint of the Warden-focused DLC |
| The Darkspawn Chronicles | Alternate standalone campaign | After the main sequence | Not required for the canonical Warden progression |
Where do the Origins-era add-ons fit?
Start the main game and add The Stone Prisoner, Warden’s Keep, and Return to Ostagar when their content becomes available. They were designed for the Origins-era world rather than as post-game expansions. You can leave them until later in the campaign if you prefer, but completing them before moving to Awakening keeps the original game’s party, equipment, and story context together.

Should Leliana’s Song come before or after Origins?
Both choices are valid. Playing Leliana’s Song first follows the in-universe chronology because it covers Leliana’s earlier history. Playing it after you meet Leliana in Origins usually gives a first-time player more context for the people and relationships involved, with less risk of treating the prequel as an unexplained character introduction.
When should I play The Darkspawn Chronicles?
Save The Darkspawn Chronicles for after the Warden-centered games. It is an alternate standalone scenario, so it does not advance the same canonical character journey and is not needed to understand Awakening, Golems of Amgarrak, or Witch Hunt.

What does Dragon Age: Origins include before the DLC?
Origins begins with one of six distinct origin stories. Each is a different introduction for the player character before the Grey Warden campaign converges on its central conflict. Your selected origin is part of the character’s background and remains relevant when you import that character into Awakening.
The six openings are not six separate games that must all be completed. Choose one for your main Warden; the other origins are optional replay material if you want to see how different backgrounds change the opening hours and early perspective.

How does Awakening continue my Origins character?
Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening is the first official expansion and takes place after Origins. It moves the Grey Warden story to Amaranthine, adds new darkspawn-related conflicts, and introduces new spells, abilities, specializations, items, and five new party members. It released on March 16, 2010, according to BioWare and Electronic Arts.
How to import an Origins Warden into Awakening
The expansion’s manual requires Origins to be installed. From the game’s module selector, use the following path:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Choose New Game.
- Select the Awakening expansion.
- Choose Import From Another Module.
- Select the Origins character you want to continue.
- Choose Import.
The imported Warden keeps the Origins background. If that character is below level 18, Awakening raises the imported character to level 18 for the expansion. You can instead create a new level-18 Grey Warden from Orlais if you do not want to import an existing save.
What if I finished Origins without the character I want?
Import the completed Origins character that represents the decisions you want carried forward. If you only want to experience the expansion’s campaign and systems, the new Orlesian Grey Warden option avoids the need for an old save, but it will not reproduce the personal history of your original Warden.

Can Dragon Age II import my Origins save?
Yes, where the installed edition and platform support the feature. Dragon Age II can read an Origins save so that decisions made by the Warden influence the sequel’s world state.
This is decision continuity, not protagonist continuity. You do not continue controlling the Origins Warden in Dragon Age II; the sequel has its own playable protagonist. The imported information represents prior choices and their consequences rather than transferring the Warden as the hero.

An Origins save gives Dragon Age II a record of the previous game’s decisions. It does not turn the Warden into the new game’s character, and it does not mean every detail of a completed playthrough becomes a playable flashback. Check the specific platform and installed version if the import option is missing, because support can vary with the release you own.
Does Dragon Age Keep import old Origins or DA2 saves?
No. Dragon Age Keep is a separate world-state workflow for Dragon Age: Inquisition. You manually configure the important prior choices in Keep and then export that world state to the game; it is not a universal converter for DAO or DA2 save files.

What Keep is useful for
Keep lets you establish the earlier scenario even if you no longer have the old games installed or do not want to replay them. It is therefore a practical way to set up an Inquisition playthrough, but it does not inspect an old Origins or Dragon Age II save and fill in the choices automatically.
How the three continuity systems differ
| Destination | Input | What carries forward | What does not happen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awakening | Origins character through the expansion’s import menu | Your Warden’s character and background | You do not need to create a new Warden, although one is available |
| Dragon Age II | Supported Origins save | Decisions and related world-state consequences | The Origins Warden does not become the playable hero |
| Inquisition through Keep | Manually configured Keep world state | The choices you select in the exported scenario | DAO or DA2 save files are not directly imported by Keep |
Which Dragon Age: Origins edition includes all the DLC?
Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition is the straightforward choice for the complete Origins-era package. The current Steam listing reviewed October 29, 2026 identifies the base game, Awakening, and nine content packs in the bundle.

| Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening | Post-Origins expansion |

| Return to Ostagar | Origins-era add-on |

| Feastday Pranks | Bonus content pack |
| Leliana’s Song | Standalone prequel-style campaign |
| The Golems of Amgarrak | Standalone Warden-focused campaign |
| Witch Hunt | Warden-focused campaign and sequence endpoint |
The Ultimate Edition is a package for Origins and its add-ons, not a collection of the later Dragon Age games. Storefront availability, installation behavior, pricing, and regional support can change, so check the current listing for your platform before buying. The Steam listing’s historical marketing also mentions more than 50 awards, including more than 30 “Best of 2009” awards; that is a storefront claim rather than an independently audited award count.

- Begin Dragon Age: Origins and choose one of the six origin stories.

- Play Awakening after finishing Origins, importing your Warden when possible.
- Play The Golems of Amgarrak after Awakening.
- Finish with Witch Hunt among the Warden-focused campaigns.
- Place Leliana’s Song before Origins for strict chronology, or after meeting Leliana for stronger context.
- Play The Darkspawn Chronicles later as an optional alternate scenario.
Standalone DLC can move without breaking the core sequence. The one order that matters for direct character continuity is Origins before Awakening, followed by Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt if you want the Warden-focused arc in release and narrative order.
What should I check before installing or transferring saves?
- Install the required base game: the Awakening manual assumes Origins is already installed.
- Locate the right character: use the Origins character-selection screen in the expansion’s import flow, not a generic new-game slot.
- Confirm the platform version: DA2 save support depends on the installed release and platform.
- Separate save import from world-state setup: use direct import for Awakening, supported Origins-save import for DA2, and manual configuration in Keep for Inquisition.
- Plan for legacy storefront behavior: older DLC may have separate installation or activation steps even when it is listed in a complete edition.
How we picked this order
The sequence follows each release’s narrative role and documented save behavior: in-campaign Origins add-ons stay with the base game; the official expansion follows Origins; the two later Warden-focused campaigns follow that expansion; and standalone or alternate stories are placed where they minimize confusion and spoiler risk. The edition recommendation is based on completeness of the current Ultimate Edition listing, while transfer advice distinguishes direct character import, decision-state import, and manual world-state configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Leliana’s Song without finishing Origins?
Yes. It is a standalone campaign, so it can be started independently. The trade-off is context: playing after you have met Leliana can make its character relationships easier to follow, while playing it first preserves its place as a prequel.
Will Dragon Age Keep recognize a save copied from another computer?
Keep is not designed to scan DAO or DA2 save files at all. Regardless of where the file came from, you establish the Inquisition scenario by selecting choices manually in Keep and exporting that world state.
Does the Ultimate Edition include the two Feastday packs?
Yes. The listed package contains both Feastday Gifts and Feastday Pranks, in addition to the base game, Awakening, and the other Origins-era add-ons. The listing describes nine content packs in total.
Can I create a new hero for Awakening instead of importing?
Yes. The expansion offers a new level-18 Grey Warden from Orlais. That option gives you an immediate entry point but does not carry the personal background and decisions of an imported Origins Warden.
