How to Play D&D Online: Choosing and Using a Virtual Tabletop

To play Dungeons & Dragons online, one person acts as Dungeon Master (DM), the other players join a shared virtual tabletop (VTT) for maps, tokens, character sheets and dice, and everyone uses voice chat to role-play and make decisions. Pick the VTT before importing characters or buying digital adventures, because D&D Beyond Maps, Roll20, Foundry Virtual Tabletop and Fantasy Grounds use different hosting, licensing and content systems. A free first session is possible with basic rules and free tiers, but premium books, converted adventures, hosting and advanced features may cost extra.

What does playing D&D online actually mean?

Online D&D is the tabletop role-playing game played through a browser or installed application, not the separate massively multiplayer video game Dungeons & Dragons Online. A human DM describes the world and controls enemies; players speak in character, choose actions and roll for uncertain outcomes. The VTT provides the shared visual workspace, while your group supplies the rules, characters and conversation.

Most groups combine three layers:

  • Game rules and characters: the edition (usually 5th edition), character sheets, ability scores, spells and equipment.
  • Virtual tabletop: a map, tokens, initiative tracker, dice roller and, depending on the service, automation for attacks and effects.
  • Communication: voice chat is essential for most groups; video is optional. Test microphones before the first adventure.

Choose a short one-shot or a prepared introductory adventure for the first meeting. A full campaign can wait until the group understands the software and agrees on a schedule.

What do I need to play D&D online with friends?

You need a DM, players, a VTT account or installation, characters, the rules or adventure the DM is allowed to use, and a reliable way to talk. You do not need physical dice, printed maps or every rulebook to begin.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Minimum checklist

  • A computer or tablet that can run the selected browser VTT or installed client.
  • A free account where the chosen service requires one, plus the campaign invitation link.
  • Headphones or speakers and a microphone. A USB headset is an optional way to reduce echo.
  • A character sheet created in the supported builder or imported in the format the DM accepts.
  • Basic rules and a first adventure. Start with material the DM already owns or that the platform makes available.
  • A calendar invitation and a backup way to contact the group if someone cannot connect.

Physical products can help new players learn at the table, but they are not required for digital dice or maps. The physical Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set includes 18 fold-out maps and more than 200 punch-out tokens, according to D&D Beyond/Wizards of the Coast (2025). Those are offline components; buying the physical set does not by itself grant the separate Maps Digital Adventure Pack.

How do I set up my first online D&D game?

Follow this order so you do not create characters or buy content that your chosen VTT cannot use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide who will DM. If nobody wants to run the game, look for an established group or a beginner-friendly one-shot rather than buying software first.
  2. Agree on the edition and scope. Confirm whether the game uses 2014 or 2024 fifth-edition rules, which books are allowed, and whether the DM is using a published adventure or homebrew material.
  3. Select one VTT as a group. Compare browser access, installation, hosting responsibility, character-sheet support, dice and combat automation. Make this decision before importing characters or purchasing platform-specific adventures.
  4. Create the campaign. The DM creates a game in the selected service, configures its rules and privacy, and sends invitations. Players should join once to confirm that their accounts and permissions work.
  5. Build or import characters. Use the VTT’s sheet or a connected D&D Beyond sheet where supported. Check that levels, equipment, spell lists and token permissions appear correctly; do not assume a book bought elsewhere will transfer.
  6. Schedule Session Zero. Set the campaign’s tone, safety boundaries, allowed sources, expected attendance, rules for character creation, and how players will communicate when absent.
  7. Run a technical check. Test microphones, browser permissions, audio levels, map loading and dice rolls. Close bandwidth-heavy applications and keep the campaign link handy.
  8. Start with a short scene. The DM opens a prepared encounter, shares the map, places tokens, explains how movement and rolls work, and narrates the result of each player’s decision. End with a clear next meeting time.

Fantasy Grounds’ official setup guidance follows a similar download, account, campaign and preflight sequence. Its guide also reports that 62,588 qualifying recorded D&D 5E sessions had a median duration of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 13 seconds in 2026, after excluding sessions shorter than 2,000 seconds from 85,100 rows. That is platform activity data, not a universal recommendation for how long your game should last.

Which virtual tabletop should I choose?

There is no universal winner. The best choice depends on where your books and character sheets already live, who can host, and how much automation the DM wants.

VTT Access and hosting Useful strengths Watch-outs
D&D Beyond Maps Browser-based; anyone with a D&D Beyond account can access Maps without a subscription. Shared maps, tokens, dice Game Log and initiative alongside D&D Beyond characters and owned content. Maps is beta. The Master Tier product listing includes custom map uploads, homebrew monsters and 10 GB of custom-map storage; do not assume every upload feature is free.
Roll20 Browser-based free starting tier with invitation links. Character sheets, digital dice, maps, group-finding tools and licensed adventures in one service. Features such as particular lighting, maps or marketplace content can depend on the plan or product; check the current listing.
Foundry Virtual Tabletop The host buys a one-time license and runs the software; players join through browsers. Deep customization, modules and support for official D&D content; hosting partners are available if the group cannot self-host. The host must handle installation, networking or a hosting provider. Foundry says its premium D&D content is not interchangeable with D&D Beyond purchases.
Fantasy Grounds Installed application for Windows, macOS and Linux; GM hosting and player access are free according to its D&D page. Linked sheets, targeting, attack rolls and combat effects can reduce repetitive bookkeeping. Commercially converted books and adventures are optional purchases, and the installed workflow requires everyone to use the application.

Is D&D Beyond Maps right for my group?

Choose Maps when the group already uses D&D Beyond character sheets and owns its digital content there. The browser beta provides shared maps, tokens, a dice Game Log and initiative, and hosting does not require a subscription. D&D Beyond’s support page says everyone with an account can explore Maps’ time-saving features without a subscription, but that statement does not make every premium Maps feature free.

Custom map uploads, homebrew monsters and 10 GB of custom-map storage are listed with Master Tier. Because support documentation can describe uploads without naming a tier, check the current Maps interface and subscription page before planning a campaign around that feature.

When is Roll20 the simplest starting point?

Roll20 is a practical browser-first option when nobody wants to install software. Its free entry level includes the basic campaign workflow—character sheets, digital dice, maps and invitation links—and the service also offers group-finding and licensed adventures. Treat “free” as access to the tier, not as a promise that every map, lighting tool or book is included.

Ask the DM to create a test game, invite one player and roll a die before the whole group builds characters. If the campaign will use a marketplace adventure, verify that its edition and required features match the plan the DM intends to use.

Who should use Foundry Virtual Tabletop?

Foundry suits a group with a technically confident host who wants extensive customization and automation. Foundry’s FAQ states: “A Foundry VTT license is a one-time purchase and only one person (the host) needs to purchase a Foundry license for their group.” Players join through a browser, while the host runs Foundry locally or uses a hosting partner.

Plan for the host to install the correct game system, configure access and keep the server available at game time. Before purchasing an adventure, confirm that it is a Foundry conversion. Foundry explicitly says premium D&D content is not interchangeable with D&D Beyond purchases, so a D&D Beyond book does not automatically unlock its Foundry counterpart.

Why choose Fantasy Grounds?

Fantasy Grounds is an installed Windows, macOS or Linux client aimed at groups that want linked character sheets and guided combat actions. Its D&D material connects targets, attacks and effects so the DM and players can perform fewer manual calculations. The application, GM hosting and player access are described as free; converted rulebooks and adventures are optional purchases.

Because Fantasy Grounds’ comparison pages are promotional, treat these as documented capabilities rather than proof that it is objectively better. Choose it when every participant is comfortable installing an application and the DM values integrated combat automation.

Do I need to pay for a virtual tabletop?

No. You can start with D&D Beyond’s Basic Rules, Character Builder and Maps access, Roll20’s free tier, or Fantasy Grounds’ free application and hosting. “Free VTT” does not mean that every rulebook, published adventure, premium map, storage allowance or automation feature is free.

Cost question What the official information supports
Can I host without a subscription? D&D Beyond says Maps hosting needs no subscription; Roll20 offers a free tier; Fantasy Grounds says its application and hosting are free.
Is Foundry free? Foundry uses a one-time host license. Players do not each need to buy a license, but the host or a hosting provider must run the game.
Are digital books portable? No automatic portability. Buy or use the edition and VTT conversion your campaign actually requires.
Will I need premium content? Only if the DM wants a specific published adventure, expanded rules, additional storage or advanced platform features. Basic rules and a short homebrew encounter can be enough for a first game.

Before checkout, write down the exact VTT, edition, adventure title and account that will own the content. A platform purchase is not a general license to every digital version of the same book.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my D&D Beyond books on Foundry or another VTT?

Usually not automatically. Each VTT has its own content licenses, data formats and conversion process. Foundry specifically states that its premium D&D content is not interchangeable with D&D Beyond purchases.

You may still use the same rules manually: the DM can reference a legally owned book while entering monsters or importing characters through supported tools. That is different from receiving a fully converted adventure with maps, tokens, text and automation. Confirm compatibility on the VTT’s product page before paying, and avoid assuming that a subscription grants ownership or export rights.

How should I run Session Zero online?

Session Zero prevents most first-session disputes. Spend 30–60 minutes agreeing on:

  • Tone and boundaries: heroic fantasy, horror, comedy, mature themes and subjects that are off-limits.
  • Rules: 2014 or 2024 rules, character options, ability-score method, leveling, critical-hit handling and whether optional rules are used.
  • Sources: which digital or physical books are allowed and who supplies access.
  • Attendance: start time, expected duration, late arrivals, cancellations and what happens to an absent character.
  • Communication: voice channel, text channel, dice policy and how players signal that a scene is uncomfortable.
  • Technical roles: who hosts, who can troubleshoot invitations, and where the campaign link and house rules are stored.

Have every player perform one movement, one ability check and one attack roll during Session Zero. Fix permissions then, rather than pausing the first dramatic encounter.

What should the DM prepare before game night?

Prepare less than you think. For a first online session, one map, a handful of tokens, three or four encounters or scenes, and a concise opening hook are enough.

  1. Create or import the map at the grid scale the VTT expects.
  2. Upload or add only the monsters and handouts needed for the first session.
  3. Set player ownership for each character token and hide DM-only notes.
  4. Pre-roll or bookmark initiative entries if the VTT supports it.
  5. Write boxed descriptions and likely rules references in a private note, not in the public chat.
  6. Open the campaign 15 minutes early and test a player account.
  7. Keep a fallback: a text description of the scene and a dice-rolling method if the map server fails.

Do not spend hours importing an entire campaign before confirming that the group likes the VTT. A small test adventure reveals whether the host, players and content licenses fit.

How do I fix common online D&D problems?

A player cannot join

Check that the invitation was sent to the correct account, that the campaign is open, and that the player is using the supported browser or current installed client. Ask the host to regenerate the link and verify whether a firewall, VPN or corporate network blocks the service.

The microphone echoes or cuts out

Use headphones, select the intended microphone in the voice app, and lower speaker volume. Have one person mute while another speaks to identify whether the problem is local or in the voice channel. If voice remains unreliable, keep the VTT for maps and move conversation to a backup channel.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tokens or sheets are missing

Confirm player ownership and campaign permissions. A character imported into one game may not appear in another, and a DM’s private layer may hide tokens from players. Reopen the campaign after saving, then test with a regular player account.

Dice or automation gives an unexpected result

Check the character’s level, proficiency, equipped weapon, advantage setting and active conditions. For a first session, agree that the DM can resolve a roll manually while the group diagnoses the sheet; do not let a software error stop the story.

The map is slow

Reduce animated backgrounds, close unused browser tabs and use a smaller image. A simple encounter map is preferable to a high-resolution file that prevents half the group from moving tokens.

What is the most reliable first-session plan?

For a low-risk start, use the VTT where the group already has accounts and characters, select a one-shot that does not require new purchases, and schedule a short Session Zero followed by a two- to three-hour adventure. If the group later wants elaborate automation, a large licensed campaign or custom hosting, migrate only after everyone understands the first platform’s strengths and limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key decision is not which VTT has the longest feature list. It is whether the host can reliably open the game, whether players can join without friction, and whether the books, sheets and adventure are licensed for that exact service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play online D&D without a webcam?

Yes. Voice communication is normally enough, and many groups keep video off to reduce bandwidth and distractions. Agree on a way to signal when someone wants to speak, such as a chat message or virtual hand raise.

How many players should a first online D&D game have?

Four or five players plus the DM is usually easier to coordinate than a very large table. A smaller group gives everyone more time to learn the VTT controls and makes audio troubleshooting less disruptive.

Can I move a character between online D&D campaigns?

Sometimes, but the method depends on the VTT and the campaign’s permissions. Exporting a sheet may omit purchased options, custom automation or token settings, so ask the new DM before relying on an import.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a VTT required if we only want to talk and roll dice?

No. A voice call and shared digital dice can support a theatre-of-the-mind game. A VTT becomes useful when the group needs precise movement, line of sight, initiative tracking or a persistent battle map.
