To stop future conversations from being used to improve generative AI models, change the data-use setting for each service you use. In personal ChatGPT, turn off Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone; in Gemini, turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity or use a temporary chat. These controls do not necessarily delete stored conversations or remove data that has already been reviewed or used in training, and some feedback or product features have separate rules.
What does opting out of AI training actually do?
An opt-out limits a provider’s specified future use of your data for model improvement; it is not a universal “erase everything” switch. It may stop new conversations from being used to improve models, while leaving account history, short-term safety retention, previously reviewed material, or data covered by a separate feature setting unaffected.

“Training” is often used as shorthand for a wider set of improvement activities. For example, Google’s description of Gemini’s Keep Activity control says turning it off stops future chats from being used to improve Google AI with human reviewers. That wording does not promise that every trace disappears immediately or that all processing for service operation and safety ends.
- Opting out: changes specified future data use.
- Deleting: asks the provider to remove eligible history or account data under its deletion process.
- Temporary chat: uses a distinct chat mode with its own data handling; it is not automatically equivalent to deleting a regular conversation.
- Feedback: can be treated differently from ordinary chats, so review the specific provider’s feedback rules.
The controls described here are the verified paths for personal ChatGPT and Gemini. They should not be assumed to apply to every AI provider, account type, or feature. The available evidence does not establish current opt-out paths for every other service, so check that service’s current privacy or data-controls page rather than relying on a setting name from another product.

How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats to improve models?
For personal ChatGPT, switch off Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data controls, or submit OpenAI’s Do not train on my content request through its Privacy Portal. OpenAI says conversations made after the opt-out are not used to improve its models.
Turn off model improvement in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
- If you want to use a formal privacy request as well, submit Do not train on my content in OpenAI’s Privacy Portal.
This is a setting for the personal ChatGPT use described by OpenAI. Do not assume changing it also changes controls in other OpenAI products or every work account.

Know the feedback exception
OpenAI warns that if you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on a conversation, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may become eligible for training even if you have opted out. If keeping a conversation out of model improvement is important, avoid rating that conversation.
Use Temporary Chat for a separate one-off option
OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. However, saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat, so do not treat a saved chat as still being covered by the temporary mode.

Check business and coding products separately
OpenAI says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and the API are not used to improve models by default; an organization must enable a sharing option for that use. If you use one of those products, the relevant question is whether the organization has enabled sharing, not whether your personal ChatGPT toggle is off.
Codex has a separate Include environments setting. Changing ChatGPT’s data controls or submitting a Privacy Portal request does not change that Codex setting. If you use Codex, check its own setting rather than assuming the ChatGPT switch covers it.

In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity, or use a temporary chat. Google says this stops future chats from being used to improve Google AI with human reviewers, but it does not mean all chat data is immediately deleted.
Turn off Keep Activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity for the account you use with Gemini.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
- For a one-off conversation, use Gemini’s temporary chat option if available to you.
Use the account that actually holds the Gemini activity. If you use more than one Google account, a change made on one account should not be treated as an account-wide change for the others.

Understand Google’s retention and feedback rules
Google says that when Keep Activity is off, chats are retained for 72 hours to respond and for safety. Google also says chats already assessed by human reviewers can be retained for up to three years; deleting activity does not remove those reviewed copies. These periods are Google’s stated practices in 2026, not a promise that all data is erased after the stated period.
Feedback is a separate consideration. Google says feedback submitted while Keep Activity is off can still include the feedback itself, recent chat context, uploads, and connected-app content for product improvement. Reviewed feedback may be retained for up to three years. Turning off Keep Activity therefore does not make submitting feedback equivalent to sending no data.
Does turning off chat history stop AI training?
Not necessarily. A history control and a model-improvement control are not interchangeable unless the provider explicitly says they are the same setting. For the services covered here, use the named data-use setting—ChatGPT’s Improve the model for everyone or Gemini’s Keep Activity—and read its stated effect rather than inferring it from whether conversations appear in a history list.
Gemini’s Keep Activity setting combines activity retention and improvement-use consequences in Google’s description, but disabling it still leaves the 72-hour retention and previously reviewed copies described above. OpenAI exposes a separate model-improvement switch for personal ChatGPT, while Temporary Chat is another mode with its own conditions. A setting that changes what you see in history should not be assumed to erase data or undo prior processing.

What happens to data after you opt out?
Opt-outs are generally forward-looking: they govern specified future collection or improvement use, not every copy or every past use. Deletion and access requests are separate actions where offered.

OpenAI’s Privacy Center offers separate requests to download data, delete chats or an account, and permanently opt out of content use for model improvement. Use the request that matches your goal: switching off future improvement use is not the same as asking to delete eligible past data.

How should I check every AI account and feature I use?
Make an inventory before changing settings. A person may use personal chat, an employer’s workspace, a coding environment, voice or file features, and connected apps under different rules. A setting for one product or account does not establish what happens in another.
- List the services and accounts. Note personal accounts, work or school accounts, and any separate coding or assistant products you use.
- Open each product’s privacy or data-controls page. Look specifically for controls governing model improvement, training, or sharing data to improve models; do not substitute a chat-history toggle unless the provider explains that it controls the same use.
- Check feature-specific handling. Look for separate rules or settings for feedback, voice, files, connected apps, and coding environments. OpenAI’s Codex Include environments control is one concrete example of a product-specific setting.
- Choose a temporary mode for a one-off sensitive chat. Confirm what that mode does and what happens if you save or otherwise retain the conversation.
- Keep feedback in mind. A rating or report may send more context than the button label suggests; consult the provider’s stated treatment before submitting it.
- Submit deletion or privacy-rights requests separately. If you want past data removed or a copy of your data, use the provider’s access or deletion process rather than relying only on an opt-out.
- Recheck settings after major policy or product changes. The control names and coverage can change, and a new feature or account type may not inherit an older setting.
What do Australian privacy principles say about AI training data?
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) stated in guidance dated 23 October 2024: “Just because data is publicly available or otherwise accessible does not mean it can legally be used to train or fine-tune generative AI models or systems.” The OAIC also says sensitive information generally requires consent and that developers should seek consent and offer a meaningful, informed opt-out when secondary AI use is not reasonably expected.
These are Australian regulatory principles, not a universal description of every country’s law or a guarantee that a particular provider’s practice is unlawful. Rights, complaint processes, and available privacy requests vary by jurisdiction. If your concern is legal rather than only a product setting, check the privacy regulator and laws that apply where you live.

Can I remove my information from a model that has already been trained?
An opt-out does not undo training that has already occurred. The available provider controls include separate deletion and privacy requests, but the material here does not establish a way to reverse an already completed model-training process.
