Users cannot permanently switch off Google’s standard AI Overviews. For an individual search, the official way to get a text-only results page is to run the search and choose the Web filter (under More if it is not visible). Search Labs controls are narrower: leaving an experiment removes that experiment, but Google says it does not disable every AI Overview.
Website owners have a separate, broader option. In Search Console, Settings > Search generative AI lets you exclude a property from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover while keeping ordinary Google indexing and ranking eligible. Page-level controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet can limit what Google uses from individual pages; noindex is different because it removes a page from normal Search.

What is the difference between opting out as a searcher and as a publisher?
The answer depends on who controls the content. A searcher can choose a different results view for a particular query, but Google does not provide a permanent master switch for core AI Overviews. A publisher can tell Google not to use a site, page or section in specified generative-AI features without withdrawing that content from the ordinary index.
| Approach | Who controls it | Scope | Effect on ordinary indexing | Effect on AI features | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web filter | Searcher | One results page at a time | None | Shows text-based links without AI Overviews on that page | Immediate for the query |
| Search Labs experiment off | Searcher | The account’s enrolled experiment | None | Removes that experiment only; it does not disable every core AI Overview | After the experiment setting changes |
| Search generative AI exclusion | Publisher | Entire Search Console property | Google says it does not affect ranking or inclusion elsewhere in Search | Excludes the property from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover | Generally one to two days; caching and propagation can take longer |
nosnippet or equivalent X-Robots-Tag |
Publisher | Individual page | Page can remain indexed, provided other rules allow it | Prevents a text snippet and direct use as input for AI Overviews and AI Mode | After Googlebot recrawls the page |
data-nosnippet |
Publisher | A span, div or section | Page remains eligible for ordinary indexing | Excludes only that element’s text from snippets and AI use | After recrawl |
max-snippet |
Publisher | Individual page | Page can remain indexed | Limits the number of characters available for snippets and AI use; max-snippet:0 is equivalent to nosnippet |
After recrawl |
noindex |
Publisher | Individual page or URL pattern | Removes the page from Google Search results | Also prevents it from serving as a normal indexed result | After Google processes the directive |
These choices are not interchangeable. The Web filter changes what one person sees; Search Console exclusion changes how Google may use an entire property in named generative features; robots directives control previews or AI use at page or section level; and noindex removes normal Search visibility.

How do I get Google results without AI on a single search?
Use Google’s Web filter after submitting the query. Google describes this view as text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. It is the supported, query-level method and does not alter your account, browser or the way a site is indexed.
- Open Google Search and enter your query normally.
- Submit the search.
- In the filter row beneath the search box, select Web. If Web is not displayed, open More and choose it there.
- Read the resulting text links. The page is intended to omit AI Overviews and other rich features that are not part of the Web filter.
The filter is not a permanent preference. A new query can return the default results layout, so select Web again when you want a text-only view. It also does not disable AI features elsewhere in Google products or stop an AI Overview from appearing on a different results page.
What should I expect from the Web filter?
It is a presentation choice, not a privacy or account setting. Google still processes the query under its normal Search systems, and the underlying index is unchanged. The filter simply asks for the Web result type rather than a page that includes an AI Overview.
Can I turn off Google AI Overviews permanently?
No documented Google setting permanently disables standard AI Overviews for an individual user. Google classifies AI Overviews as a core Search feature, comparable to other built-in result features, and says core features cannot be turned off.
Search Labs can create a different impression because some users joined experiments that add or modify AI behavior. Leaving one of those experiments is still useful, but it is not a universal opt-out.
How do I leave a Search Labs experiment?
- Open Google Search Labs while signed in to the account that joined the experiment.
- Select Manage.
- Turn off the relevant AI experiment.
- Run a fresh search to see the result after the setting has propagated to your session.
Google’s help guidance makes an important distinction: disabling a Labs experiment removes that experiment, not all AI Overviews. If an Overview still appears after you leave Labs, that is consistent with the core feature remaining active. Use the Web filter for the individual query instead.

Are browser extensions or search tricks an official opt-out?
No. Extensions, query parameters and alternative search front ends may hide parts of a results page, but Google does not document them as permanent controls. Their behavior can change when the Search interface changes, and they may affect accessibility, security or result functionality. Treat them as optional, unsupported workarounds rather than replacements for the Web filter.

How do I keep my website indexed while excluding it from Google’s generative-AI features?
Use the property-level control in Search Console. Google says this setting excludes the site’s links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover, while the control itself is not a ranking or general Search-inclusion signal.
- Sign in to the Google Search Console account that has permission for the property.
- Open the property you want to control.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Search generative AI.
- Choose the option to exclude the property and confirm the change.
- Record the change date and check representative URLs after the stated processing window.
Exclusion means the content is not eligible to be used as input for an AI response or preview in the covered features. It does not delete URLs, remove them from the index or tell Google to stop crawling the site. Normal Search eligibility is governed by the usual indexing and ranking systems.
How long does the Search Console exclusion take?
Google documents a usual propagation period of one to two days after the control goes live. Caching and other propagation steps can extend that period, so a result seen shortly after the change is not reliable evidence that the setting failed. Test again after the window and use several representative pages rather than one isolated query.
What does the property-level control cover?
The documented scope includes AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover. It is broader than a page directive because it applies to the Search Console property, but it is narrower than a request to remove a site from Google altogether: ordinary Search inclusion is not the purpose of this control.
How can I suppress AI use or snippets on only certain pages?
Use Google’s robots meta directives or their HTTP-header equivalents when the decision is page-specific. The page must remain crawlable so Googlebot can receive and process the directive.
Block snippets and direct AI input with nosnippet
Add the directive in the page’s <head>:
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">
An equivalent HTTP response header is X-Robots-Tag: nosnippet. Google documents nosnippet as preventing a text snippet and preventing the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is a preview and AI-use control, not a request to remove the URL from the index.
Hide only one passage with data-nosnippet
Wrap the text you do not want exposed in snippets or used for AI features:

</section>
Google supports the attribute on a span, div or section. Only the text inside that element is excluded; other crawlable text on the page can remain available for ordinary snippets and AI processing.
Limit the available text with max-snippet
Set a character limit in the robots meta tag:
<meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:160">
The number limits how many characters Google may use for snippets and AI use. A value of 0 is equivalent to nosnippet:
<meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:0">
Choose a positive limit when a short preview is acceptable but unrestricted extraction is not. Apply the rule consistently across page templates so a later redesign does not silently remove it.
Why should I not use noindex to block Google AI?
noindex solves a different problem. Google defines it as a rule that keeps a page out of Google Search results, so it conflicts with the goal of retaining ordinary indexing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a page has noindex, Google may remove it from the normal result set after recrawling. That means the URL is no longer available as a standard Search result, regardless of whether an AI Overview would have used it. Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or the Search Console generative-AI exclusion when you want to remain in ordinary Search.
When is noindex the right choice?
Use it only when the business or editorial requirement is to remove the page from Google Search entirely. Examples include duplicate utility pages, private landing pages that should not be discoverable through Search, or content that has been retired. It is not a selective AI opt-out.
What eligibility and crawling conditions affect these controls?
A page must be indexed and eligible to show a normal Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If a page is already blocked from crawling, cannot be indexed, or is otherwise ineligible for a snippet, there may be nothing for the AI feature to use; that is different from intentionally applying a preview control.

- Keep Googlebot access: robots meta directives and
X-Robots-Tagwork only when Googlebot can crawl the response and read the rule. - Check the delivered HTML: a directive inserted only after client-side rendering may not be handled as intended. Make sure the final response or rendered document contains the control.
- Allow recrawling: Google says page-level changes can take several days to several months to be processed, depending on crawl scheduling.
- Inspect a URL: use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to confirm what Googlebot received and whether the current page state is known.
- Separate eligibility from display: an indexed page may be eligible for an AI feature even when a particular query does not display an Overview. Test the directive itself, not just one search result.
How do I verify that a page-level opt-out is working?
Verification has two parts: confirm that Googlebot received the directive, then allow enough time for Google’s systems to update the page’s preview and AI eligibility.
- Fetch the production URL and inspect the HTML head for the intended robots meta tag, or inspect the HTTP response headers for
X-Robots-Tag. - Open Search Console and run URL Inspection for the exact canonical URL.
- Check that the inspected version reflects the current directive rather than an older cached crawl.
- Request indexing only when appropriate for your site’s normal workflow; a request does not guarantee immediate processing.
- Wait through the recrawl period, then test several relevant queries and inspect whether the page still appears as a normal link.
A stale AI preview shortly after deployment does not necessarily mean the directive is wrong. Google’s documented page-level timing ranges from days to months because recrawling depends on crawl scheduling. Keep a change log so you know when the control became available to Googlebot.
Which control should I choose?
Start with the smallest scope that meets the requirement. That avoids removing useful Search visibility or suppressing more content than intended.
- You are a searcher who wants text links now: choose Web for the query.
- You joined a Labs experiment and want to leave it: turn off that experiment under Search Labs > Manage, then use Web when a core Overview still appears.
- You publish a site and want a site-wide AI exclusion: use Search Console > Settings > Search generative AI.
- You want no snippets or direct AI input from a page: use
nosnippetor the equivalent response header. - You want to protect one paragraph, disclosure or data block: mark that element with
data-nosnippet. - You permit only a short preview: set an appropriate positive
max-snippetvalue. - You want the URL absent from ordinary Search: use
noindex, accepting that it removes the page’s normal Search visibility.
What common mistakes cause an opt-out to fail?
Expecting Search Labs to disable every Overview
Labs is an experiment-management surface, not the control for Google’s core AI Overview feature. Leaving the experiment can be correct while still leaving a core Overview available. Select Web for a reliable text-only result page.
Using noindex when indexing must continue
This removes the page from the ordinary result set and defeats the stated objective. Replace it with a preview directive or the property-level generative-AI setting, depending on scope.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Blocking the crawler from seeing the directive
If robots.txt or another access rule prevents Googlebot from fetching the page, Google cannot reliably read a robots meta tag or response header. Make the page crawlable, then verify the received version in URL Inspection.
Checking too soon
Search Console property exclusions generally take one to two days, while page-level changes may wait for a recrawl that takes days to months. A cached result immediately after deployment is not a useful final test.
Best Value
Applying a section control to the wrong element
data-nosnippet applies to text inside a span, div or section. Put the attribute on the element that actually contains the sensitive passage, and confirm that nested content is inside it in the delivered HTML.
Does excluding a site from generative AI change its rankings?
Google says the Search Console generative-AI control is not used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search. The setting is specifically about eligibility for the named generative features, so a site can continue participating in ordinary indexing and ranking systems.

How should teams roll out these controls safely?
Document the intended scope before changing templates or Search Console settings. A site-wide exclusion is easy to apply but broad; a section-level attribute is precise but requires ongoing template discipline.
- Define the goal: decide whether you need a user-side text view, a site-wide publisher exclusion, page-level suppression or removal from Search.
- Inventory affected URLs: list templates, locales and sections that contain the material you want excluded.
- Choose one control: avoid stacking
noindexwith a requirement to remain indexed. - Deploy to a test set: verify the actual HTML or HTTP headers before changing every page.
- Inspect and record: use URL Inspection and note the deployment date, directive and canonical URL.
- Expand carefully: roll out the rule to the remaining templates or confirm the Search Console property setting.
- Monitor after propagation: retest representative URLs after the relevant timing window and review any unintended loss of snippets or indexing.
This workflow keeps the decision reversible. You can remove a meta directive or change a section attribute without taking an entire site out of Search, while a property-level exclusion can be revisited in Search Console if your policy changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check whether Googlebot received my robots meta tag?
Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool on the exact URL and compare the inspected version with the production HTML. Also check the raw response or page source for the robots directive, because a tag added only in a browser after load may not represent what Googlebot received.

Yes, the controls operate at different scopes. A property exclusion covers the documented generative-AI features for the whole property, while page or section directives let you express a more restrictive rule for individual content; test the resulting template and keep a record of which rule is authoritative.
What happens if a page has a positive max-snippet value and data-nosnippet sections?
The positive limit governs text that remains eligible, while text inside the marked elements is excluded. This lets a page offer a controlled short preview without exposing a specific passage.
Why might an old AI preview remain after I publish nosnippet?
Google may still be showing a cached or previously processed version until Googlebot recrawls the page and the updated signals propagate. Check URL Inspection first, then allow the page-level recrawl window rather than assuming the directive was ignored.
