Firefox can handle a PDF form from start to finish in its built-in viewer: open the file, enter data in supported interactive fields, add a typed, drawn, or image signature, and save a copy containing your changes. The key limitation is that the form must expose interactive fields for direct entry, and a signature added in Firefox is only an annotation—not an authenticated or verified electronic signature.
This guide follows Mozilla Support’s documented workflow (last updated May 18, 2026), including what Firefox can edit, how to preserve your completed copy, and what to do when the PDF does not behave like a normal form.

How do I open a PDF in Firefox?
Open a PDF link in Firefox, or open a PDF listed in the browser’s Downloads panel. When PDF files are configured to open in Firefox, the built-in PDF viewer is the default action. The document can be viewed in the browser without first downloading a separate local copy.
Open a PDF from a web page
- Start Firefox and select a link to the PDF.
- Wait for the document to load in the built-in PDF viewer. The viewer toolbar appears above the page.
- Use the viewer controls to move between pages, zoom, or search within the document.
Viewing the file in the browser does not, by itself, create a saved copy on your computer. If you need a local file to complete, submit, or archive, use the viewer’s Save button and choose a destination when Firefox presents the save flow.

Open a PDF you already downloaded
- Open Firefox’s Downloads panel.
- Select the PDF, or use your operating system’s file picker to open it with Firefox.
- Confirm that it appears in the built-in viewer before entering information.
Mozilla says the viewer supports almost all PDFs found on the web. A file with an incorrectly set MIME type is a documented exception, but it is not the only possible reason a file might fail to display as expected. A damaged file, access restriction, or a problem with the download can also require investigation outside the basic form-filling workflow.
Which PDF forms can I fill out in Firefox?
Firefox can fill a PDF when the document contains interactive form fields. Mozilla specifically documents text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons. A PDF that is only a scanned image, has been flattened, or otherwise lacks interactive controls will not become an interactive form merely because it is open in Firefox.
How to recognize an interactive field
- Click inside a blank area where the form requests information. A cursor or field highlight indicates a text field.
- Select a checkbox when the form offers a yes/no or multi-select choice.
- Select a radio button when the form presents one choice from a group.
Field appearance varies by document design. Some forms show visible boxes; others reveal the active area only after you click. If clicking produces no field focus, try another blank area, check that the PDF finished loading, and determine whether the document is actually interactive before assuming Firefox is malfunctioning.
How do I fill in text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons?
Click an interactive field, enter the requested information, and make selections as you move through the form. Firefox writes the values into the document view; you must still save or download the PDF afterward to keep those changes in a file.
Enter text
- Click the text field.
- Type the requested name, address, date, identification number, or other value.
- Move to the next field by clicking it and review the text for omissions or typing errors.
Stay within the field’s visible area when possible. A form author may have designed a field for a particular amount of text; Firefox does not guarantee that long entries will fit or that the form’s own validation rules will catch every mistake.
Select checkboxes
- Click each checkbox that applies.
- Click a selected checkbox again only if you need to clear it.
- Check the surrounding wording so that optional and required choices are not confused.
Checkboxes can allow more than one selection, so do not treat them like a single-choice group unless the form’s instructions say otherwise.

- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
- 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. - 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.
Select radio buttons
- Click one radio button in the relevant group.
- Review the group to make sure the intended option is selected.
- If you select a different option in the same group, the earlier choice is normally replaced by the new one.
Before leaving the document, scan every page for fields you may have skipped. A form can contain fields outside the first page or in sections that become visible only when you scroll.
How do I add a signature in Firefox?
Use the PDF viewer’s signature control, choose to add a new signature, and select one of Mozilla’s three documented input methods: type, draw, or insert an image. These methods change how the mark is created, not its legal or technical status; all three are annotations without authentication or verification.
Type a signature
- Open the signature control in the PDF viewer toolbar.
- Choose the option to add a new signature.
- Select Type and enter your name or preferred signature text with the keyboard.
- Confirm the signature and place it in the document where the form requests it.
Typing is usually the quickest method on a desktop or laptop and does not require a touchscreen or image file.
Draw a signature
- Open the signature control and choose to add a new signature.
- Select Draw.
- Write the signature with a mouse, or use a finger or stylus on a touchscreen device.
- Confirm the drawing and position it over the signature area.
A stylus is optional. A mouse, finger, or the type and image alternatives can all be used, depending on the device and the result you need.

- Open the signature control and choose to add a new signature.
- Select Image.
- Choose an existing signature image when Firefox asks for one.
- Confirm the image and place it in the required location.
An image can be useful when you already have a handwritten signature saved as a file. Use an image you are authorized to use, and check its position and scale before saving the PDF.
What happens to signature accessibility text?
Mozilla says Firefox adds descriptive alternative text automatically when a signature is inserted. You can edit that alternative text before completing the annotation if the automatically supplied description does not accurately describe the mark for someone using assistive technology.

Can I reuse a signature?
If the save-signature option is checked while creating the signature, Firefox makes it available from the Add signature menu for later use. Leave that option unchecked on a shared computer if you do not want the signature available to another person who uses the same browser profile.
Are signatures added in Firefox legally binding?
Do not treat a typed, drawn, or image signature in Firefox as proof of identity or as a verified electronic-signature event. Mozilla’s warning states: “Signatures added using the Firefox PDF viewer are not legally binding e-signatures. They are simple annotations and do not provide authentication or verification.”

The fact that a mark looks handwritten, came from an image, or was placed in a field does not add a digital certificate, identity check, audit trail, or authentication. If the recipient requires authentication or verification, use the separate signing process or service specified by that recipient rather than relying on the Firefox annotation.
How do I save a filled and signed PDF?
Use the PDF viewer’s Save button after entering form values or adding a signature. Saving is the step that creates a copy containing your edits; closing the tab or navigating away without saving can leave you with only the unchanged source file.
- Finish entering text and selecting checkboxes or radio buttons.
- Add any required signature annotation and check its placement.
- Select the viewer’s Save button.
- In the save flow presented by Firefox or your operating system, choose the destination and filename.
- Open the saved copy and verify that the entries and signature are still present before submitting it.
Mozilla documents saving edited PDFs from the viewer toolbar. Exact dialog wording and the appearance of the destination picker can differ by operating system and browser setup, so follow the controls shown on your device rather than looking for one universal prompt.
How can I avoid submitting the wrong copy?
- Give the completed file a new, descriptive filename instead of overwriting the blank original.
- Save it in a folder you can locate when attaching it to an email or uploading it to a portal.
- Reopen the saved file and inspect every page.
- Keep the original blank form separately if you may need another copy later.
These file-management steps do not change the PDF’s contents; they reduce the chance of attaching an unfilled download or losing the completed version.

What is the difference between Firefox’s three signature methods?
The practical difference is how you supply the mark. Firefox’s documentation does not assign different legal validity to typing, drawing, or inserting an image; each remains a simple annotation without authentication or verification.
| Method | Input needed | Useful when | Documented limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Keyboard | You want the fastest setup on a computer or do not have a signature image. | It is an annotation, not an authenticated or verified e-signature. |
| Draw | Mouse, finger, or touchscreen stylus | You want to reproduce a handwritten mark directly in the viewer. | It is an annotation, not an authenticated or verified e-signature. |
| Image | An existing signature image file | You already have a prepared image and want consistent placement. | It is an annotation, not an authenticated or verified e-signature. |
Choose based on convenience and the recipient’s instructions, not on an assumption that one method is more legally authoritative than another.
What should I do if the PDF will not let me type?
First determine whether the document has interactive fields. Firefox’s documented form support covers interactive text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons; it does not promise to convert a static or scanned page into a fillable form.
Check the document and viewer
- Wait for all pages to finish loading, then click the suspected field again.
- Try a known field on another page to see whether the issue affects the whole document.
- Scroll carefully: some fields are lower on the page or on later pages.
- Confirm that you are working in Firefox’s PDF viewer and not looking at a separate preview image.
When the page is a scan or flattened PDF
If no field responds, the PDF may contain only page artwork rather than editable controls. The Mozilla guidance used here does not establish a Firefox method for turning such a file into an interactive form. Ask the form issuer for a fillable version or use a separate PDF editor that supports the kind of editing your task requires.

Mozilla identifies an incorrectly set MIME type as one exception to normal web viewing. If a link opens as an unexpected download or fails to render, save the file if possible and verify that the download completed, then ask the site owner for a corrected file or link. The MIME-type issue is documented, but it should not be assumed to explain every display failure.

A final review catches omissions that the viewer will not necessarily flag. Use this checklist after saving and reopening the copy:

- Every required text field contains the intended value.
- Dates, numbers, email addresses, and identification details are accurate.
- Checkboxes reflect the choices you meant to make.
- Each radio-button group has the correct single selection.
- The signature is on the intended page and does not cover other text.
- The saved filename and location identify the completed version.
- The recipient’s instructions do not require an authenticated or verified e-signature that Firefox’s annotation cannot provide.
Reopening the saved copy matters because it tests the file you will actually submit, not merely the temporary browser view.
What is the complete Firefox PDF-form workflow?
For a routine interactive form, the process is short:
- Open: Load the PDF link or select the downloaded PDF in Firefox’s Downloads panel.
- Confirm: Make sure the built-in viewer displays the document and identify its interactive fields.
- Fill: Enter text and select supported checkboxes or radio buttons.
- Sign, if requested: Add a typed, drawn, or image signature through the viewer’s signature control.
- Qualify the signature: Remember that Firefox adds an annotation without authentication or verification.
- Save: Use the viewer’s Save button and select a destination and filename.
- Verify: Reopen the saved copy and check the form before delivering it.
This sequence keeps the distinction clear between viewing a PDF, editing an interactive form, adding an annotation, and creating the saved file that another person will receive.
What are Firefox’s limits for PDF forms?
Firefox is convenient when the form is already interactive and the recipient accepts an ordinary PDF containing annotations. It is not a universal PDF-authoring or signature-verification system. The documented scope covers opening PDFs, filling interactive text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons, adding signatures by three input methods, and saving the edited file.
For anything beyond that scope—such as converting a scan into a form, proving signer identity, obtaining authentication, or meeting a recipient’s specialized signing requirement—you need instructions or software designed for that specific requirement. Do not infer those capabilities from the presence of a signature button in the viewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does opening a PDF in Firefox automatically download it?
No. Firefox can display the document in its built-in viewer without creating a local saved copy. Select the viewer’s Save button when you need a file on your computer.
Can I fill a scanned PDF form directly in Firefox?
Only PDFs with interactive fields are covered by Firefox’s documented fill-and-edit workflow. A scanned or flattened document may have no text fields, checkboxes, or radio buttons to select, so request a fillable version or use a separate editor suited to that document.
Will a recipient know that I signed the PDF in Firefox?
The PDF contains the signature annotation you placed, but Firefox does not provide authentication or verification for it. Ask the recipient whether an annotation is acceptable before relying on it for a formal transaction.
Why does my saved PDF look unchanged when I reopen it?
You may have viewed or edited the browser copy without using the PDF viewer’s Save button, or you may have reopened the original blank file. Save to a distinct filename, then reopen that exact file and check the fields and annotation.
