If AI has added checking, correction, exception handling, training, or decision-making to your job, document how your work has changed and ask for a review of your role scope, classification, workload, and compensation. An increase in workload does not automatically guarantee a raise, and there is no universal percentage or formula for AI-related pay changes. Your options depend on your location, worker status, contract, and any collective agreement.
The strongest case is specific: show what the old role involved, what the role requires now, how the difference affects responsibility and time, and what outcome would address it. Then ask how the changed duties fit the employer’s pay and job-level criteria.

What counts as an AI-related change to your role?
It is not enough to count the tasks an AI tool now performs. Compare the full work process before and after its introduction, including the human work that remains or has been added. Automation can remove routine steps while leaving employees with more complex or cognitively demanding work; pace-setting technology can also raise work demands. Safe Work Australia identifies these as possible work-design risks, not as proof that every AI rollout has the same effect.
Look for changes in four areas:
- Time and volume: more cases, faster targets, longer hours, or time spent checking and correcting outputs.
- Complexity: more exceptions, ambiguous cases, rework, outages, or decisions that previously did not reach you.
- Responsibility: accountability for approving results, explaining them to clients, or handling errors and complaints.
- Skills and control: new expertise or training requirements, alongside changes in your authority to override outputs or set the pace of work.
These changes may support a conversation about compensation, job level, workload, training, or safeguards. They do not establish a legal entitlement to a raise by themselves.

How do I show that my workload has actually increased?
Build a concise, dated before-and-after record. The aim is to make the added work visible without overstating what AI changed or treating a short-lived launch problem as a permanent pattern.
Map the whole task, not just the automated step
For each affected duty, record the original process, the current process, and who now owns each step. Include work removed by automation as well as work added. For example, an AI system may draft an output more quickly, but you may now need to verify it, correct errors, handle exceptions, document decisions, or explain the result to someone else. Counting only the faster draft would miss those responsibilities; counting only the new review step would miss any time the tool genuinely saved.

| Work element | Before the AI workflow | Current workflow | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine production | Tasks and approximate volume previously handled | What the tool now does and what you still do | Work queue, output volume, or dated task log |
| Review and correction | Whether review existed and how much it involved | Checks, corrections, and time required | Sampled time records and correction counts |
| Exceptions and failures | Who handled unusual cases or system problems | Who handles them now and how often they arise | Case records, escalation notes, or incident logs |
| Accountability | Who made or approved the relevant decisions | Who signs off, explains outcomes, or owns errors | Updated procedures, assignment records, or written instructions |
| Training and documentation | Existing training and documentation duties | New learning, coaching, or records you are expected to produce | Training time, requests, and assigned materials |
Do not assume that every item in the table has increased. Mark what changed, what stayed the same, and what remains unclear.
Keep a short evidence log
For a representative period, note the date, task, time spent, volume, complexity, corrections, decisions you owned, and any change in target or deadline. Include training time and work caused by exceptions or outages. A brief, consistent record is more useful than a large collection of impressions. Use information you are permitted to access and retain; do not copy confidential customer, employee, or business data into personal files.
Separate observed facts from estimates. If you are estimating time, say how you estimated it and over what period. If the volume varies, record the variation instead of presenting an unusually busy day as typical. This makes it easier for a manager to discuss the scope and to correct your understanding if a process has changed.
How should I connect the extra work to pay?
Ask how the employer evaluates role scope, job classification, pay bands, promotion, and salary reviews. The important question is not simply whether you are busier, but whether the changed responsibilities meet the employer’s criteria for a different level of role or compensation.

Before the meeting, request or locate the written role description, your current level or classification, the relevant pay band if one exists, and the rules or schedule for salary reviews. Identify the specific criteria that appear relevant: for example, decision authority, complexity, accountability, required skills, or responsibility for others. Do not assume these criteria apply until your employer confirms them.

UK Government guidance titled Increase transparency for pay, promotion and rewards, published 4 March 2026, recommends making pay and promotion criteria and decision processes clear. That is guidance for England, Scotland, and Wales; it is not a global legal rule. In other locations, check the applicable employer policy, contract, collective agreement, and local requirements.
Prepare a short explanation that links evidence to a criterion. For instance, if the role framework distinguishes work by decision responsibility, identify which decisions you now make, how often, and what accountability accompanies them. If the relevant criterion is expertise, identify the new skills required and whether the employer expects you to train others. Avoid claiming that a particular criterion has been met until you have checked the actual framework.
What salary data should I bring?
Bring comparisons for genuinely similar roles, not a broad average for anyone using AI. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) TEAMS Salary Negotiation Participant Guide 2026, dated February 2026, recommends comparing salary data by job title, location, experience, and skills. Those factors help you judge whether a comparison is relevant; the guide does not set an AI-related raise amount.
Recommended Free Tools
When reviewing a salary figure, record what it describes and how closely it matches your situation. A title that sounds similar may involve a different seniority level, location, or set of responsibilities. Make clear which parts of your present role the comparison includes and where the match is uncertain. If available data is sparse, say so rather than presenting a weak comparison as definitive.
Market data is supporting context, not a substitute for your employer’s own classification and compensation process. Your request can still focus on a scope review if reliable external salary comparisons are unavailable.
What outcomes can I ask for?
Choose an outcome that addresses the change you can document. Compensation is one option, but some workload increases are better addressed by clearer priorities, more support, training time, or limits on responsibility.
- Pay review or adjustment: ask for the expanded scope to be assessed against the applicable salary-review process.
- Reclassification or promotion review: ask whether the additional complexity or accountability fits a different job level.
- Workload redesign: ask which tasks should stop, be delayed, or receive lower priority if new review work is added.
- Paid training and support: ask for time to learn the workflow, human help with difficult cases, or access to someone who can resolve system failures.
- Temporary arrangement: if the AI workflow is in a pilot or its demands are unsettled, propose a time-limited allowance or a scheduled review. This is a negotiating option, not a guaranteed entitlement.
- Clearer responsibility and controls: ask who approves outputs, who handles exceptions, and what authority you have to challenge or override a result.
Be precise about what each request would change. A pay adjustment without workload limits may leave an unsustainable pace untouched; a workload adjustment without a scope review may leave added responsibility unrecognized. You can raise more than one issue, but identify which is most important and what would count as a workable alternative.

How do I prepare for the compensation conversation?
Set up the meeting around evidence, role criteria, and a decision—not a general complaint about AI. VETS’s 2026 salary-negotiation guide recommends preparing with relevant salary data and practicing negotiation scenarios, including counteroffers.
- Choose representative examples. Select a few tasks that show the change in time, complexity, or accountability. Bring the broader task map if useful, but lead with the clearest examples.
- Check the process. Find out who can review the role and compensation, what documentation is expected, and whether a formal salary-review or classification route applies.
- Decide your request. State whether you want a salary review, reclassification assessment, workload change, training support, or a combination. If the employer cannot decide immediately, be ready to ask for a defined next step.
- Practice likely responses. Prepare a calm reply if you hear that the change is temporary, affects everyone, is already included in your role, or cannot be addressed in the current budget. Ask what evidence or process would resolve the issue rather than arguing over an unsupported percentage.
- Set a private priority and fallback. Decide what outcome matters most and what alternative would still improve the situation. This helps you evaluate a counteroffer instead of agreeing to vague future consideration.
For example, you could say: “Since the AI workflow was introduced, I now spend [documented time] checking and correcting outputs, and I am accountable for [specific decisions]. My duties and workload have changed. Can we review how these responsibilities fit my role level and pay criteria, and agree on how the additional work should be handled?” Keep bracketed variables inside code in any reusable written template; replace them with your own evidence before sending it.
What questions should I ask in the meeting?
Use questions that establish the expected work, the applicable criteria, and who will make a decision. This keeps the discussion specific even if the employer is not ready to discuss a number immediately.
- Which tasks are now part of my role, and which existing tasks should stop or be deprioritized?
- What volume and quality standard are expected, including the review and correction of AI outputs?
- How do these responsibilities map to my job level, classification, pay band, or salary-review criteria?
- What paid training, human support, and authority to question or override an output are available?
- If a pay decision cannot be made now, what measurable change or evidence would trigger another review, on what date, and who will decide?
- If AI tools inform performance or pay decisions, what data and criteria are being used, and how can I ask for meaningful human review?
Where possible, turn general answers into specific commitments: a named decision-maker, a document to be shared, a target date, or a defined review point. If the employer says nothing about pay can change, clarify whether that means no immediate adjustment, no review under current policy, or a decision that your duties do not meet the relevant criteria. Those are different answers.
What if AI is used to assess my performance or pay?
Ask what information the system uses, how its output affects the decision, who reviews the result, and how you can challenge an error. Rules vary by jurisdiction and by how the system is used, so do not assume that every algorithm-assisted workplace decision is prohibited or that every worker has the same rights.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) explains that Article 22 of UK GDPR restricts certain decisions made solely by automated means when they have legal or similarly significant effects. Some pay decisions may fall within that area, depending on the circumstances and the applicable conditions. This is UK-specific guidance, not a general rule for other countries. If you believe a significant employment decision was made about you, check the law that applies locally and seek qualified advice where appropriate.
For a discussion about the system itself, distinguish an automated recommendation from a decision made solely by automation. Ask whether a person can meaningfully review the underlying information, correct it, consider context, and change the outcome. The label “human review” is not enough on its own to explain how a particular process works.

How should I approach a union or public-sector workplace?
If a union represents you, check the collective agreement and speak with a representative before treating the issue as an individual salary negotiation. The agreement may set out role classifications, pay scales, grievance routes, consultation requirements, or bargaining processes relevant to a change in duties.
Communications Workers of America (CWA) has described bargaining over workload intensification, compensation, benefits, automated decisions, and sharing productivity gains as part of its union position. That position illustrates topics a union may address; it is not a neutral finding about what all employers must do or a statement of universal law.
For devolved public-sector workplaces in Wales, Welsh Government guidance Managing technology that manages people: November 2025, published and updated 24 November 2025, calls for social partnership, human oversight, fair work, workforce capability, and protection of jobs when algorithmic systems are introduced. Its scope is Wales’s devolved public sector, not every workplace in Wales or elsewhere. If you work in that setting, use the applicable workplace process and ask how staff input and oversight are being handled.
What should I do after the meeting?
Send a brief, factual recap while the discussion is fresh. Record the changed duties you described, the evidence discussed, the questions still open, any decision or commitment, who owns each next step, and the dates agreed. Invite corrections if you misunderstood something.
Keep the relevant role description, written pay criteria, your proposal, and any revised agreement in an appropriate place. A written recap helps preserve a clear record of the discussion; it does not, by itself, create legal rights or guarantee that an employer has accepted your proposal. If a promised review date passes, follow up by referring to the specific commitment and asking for the status or a new date.
How can I judge whether a proposed arrangement is fair?
Assess the full arrangement rather than judging it only by a headline salary figure. Compare the previous and proposed roles across the dimensions that changed, and note what is agreed versus what remains unspecified.
| Dimension | Questions to compare |
|---|---|
| End-to-end workload | Does the expected volume include review, correction, exceptions, rework, training, and outages? |
| Role scope and accountability | Who checks outputs, owns decisions, responds to failures, and carries client or compliance responsibility? |
| Skills and development | What new expertise is expected, and is paid time or training provided? |
| Pay and classification | How are the duties assessed against the applicable level, band, review, or promotion process? |
| Targets, staffing, and control | Have pace or targets risen, has capacity changed, and can workers give input into how work is measured? |
| Oversight and challenge | Who can override an output, and what route exists to obtain human review of a significant decision? |
A proposal can improve one dimension while leaving another unresolved. For example, an expanded role may come with a review date but no commitment about workload in the meantime. Write down the outstanding terms so you can decide whether to accept, seek clarification, or continue negotiating.

What should I avoid when asking for more compensation?
Keep the request anchored to observable changes and the employer’s actual process. Avoid relying on claims the evidence cannot support.
- Do not assume that AI adoption automatically creates a right to a raise or that a particular percentage is standard. The sources here establish no universal AI-related raise formula.
- Do not claim that the tool saved no time if it did remove work; include both saved tasks and added review, exceptions, and accountability.
- Do not compare your salary with figures that differ substantially by location, seniority, experience, skills, or job scope without explaining the mismatch.
- Do not treat guidance from one jurisdiction or sector as a rule everywhere. Check whether it applies to your location and type of workplace.
- Do not leave an agreement at “we will revisit this.” Ask what will be reviewed, by whom, and when.
No directly applicable published statistic in the cited source set quantifies how much compensation changes when AI increases a worker’s workload. General AI adoption or productivity figures would not establish your individual pay entitlement or the size of an appropriate adjustment.

Should I give my manager a specific raise percentage?
Give a clear request if you have a defensible figure based on your employer’s pay framework and comparable roles, but do not present a percentage as an AI industry standard. The available guidance does not establish a universal percentage for additional AI-related duties.
Can my employer make me use AI at work?
The materials cited here do not establish a general right to refuse an employer’s AI tool. Whether a direction is lawful or consistent with your agreement depends on local law, the job, and the applicable workplace terms.
What if my manager says everyone has more work now?
Ask how the organization defines expected workload and whether the same role criteria apply to everyone affected. A shared change may be better addressed through a team, union, or formal consultation process, depending on your workplace.
Can I record my compensation meeting?
Recording laws and workplace policies differ, so check the rules where you are before recording anyone. A written recap sent after the discussion is a lower-friction way to confirm what was said and what follow-up was agreed.
