To move useful context between AI chatbots, save an official export of the source account, make a smaller handoff document with the prompts and notes you actually need, then use the destination chatbot’s import feature—or provide that document in a new chat. This preserves reusable text, but it does not recreate the original account: chat lists, branches, settings, attachments, and provider-specific memories may not transfer. Test the handoff with a short prompt before relying on it.
What can you move between AI chatbots?
Usually, the most portable material is text: your reusable prompts, response preferences, project facts, terminology, decisions, and selected conversation excerpts. A provider’s export may also contain a much larger record of account data and conversation history, but the destination may treat that file only as reference material rather than turning it into a set of native chats.

How should I prepare a portable handoff?
Keep the original export unchanged, but do not make it the only handoff you prepare. Create a separate, readable document containing the information you want the new chatbot to use; a concise file is easier to inspect and selectively share than a full account archive.

1. Save the original export
Request the source provider’s official download and store the ZIP or other export privately. Preserve the original as a reference copy. Do not edit or delete files inside it as a substitute for keeping the archive intact.
2. Select useful context
Collect instructions that should apply repeatedly, favorite prompts, response preferences, project context, important terminology, decisions already made, and conversation excerpts that remain useful. Prefer a clear summary over a large transcript dump: the goal is to make important facts easy to find, not to carry every exchange into every new chat.
3. Separate facts, dates, and open questions
Label dates where they matter. Distinguish established facts from assumptions, and record unresolved questions rather than presenting them as settled. Preserve exact wording for instructions where a small change could alter the result. Include source links or file names when they are needed to identify supporting material.
4. Remove material you do not want to share
Exclude passwords, API keys, private tokens, and unnecessary personal information. Add a privacy-exclusions note to your working document if it helps you remember what you deliberately left out. Treat both the full export and the curated handoff as potentially sensitive account data.
5. Use a simple structure
Markdown or plain text is practical because it is readable and easy to paste. This template gives each kind of context a separate place:

OpenAI documents the export route as Settings → Data controls → Export data, or you can request an export through the Privacy Portal. The download is a ZIP that can include chat history and other relevant account data. OpenAI says an export can take up to seven days to arrive, and the download link expires after 24 hours; these are OpenAI’s stated timings in 2026.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, and choose Export data. The Privacy Portal is the alternative route documented by OpenAI.
- Wait for the export email or notification and download the ZIP before its link expires.
- Keep the ZIP private and retain it unchanged as your source archive.
- For a handoff, extract a separate working copy and select the prompts, notes, or conversation material you need.
Allow for the stated processing window rather than assuming the archive will be available immediately. The ZIP can contain more than the conversations you intend to reuse, so inspect what you plan to share before uploading it to another service.
Can I move ChatGPT chats to another ChatGPT account?
OpenAI’s supported workaround is to use the export as reference material in a new conversation on the destination personal account. It does not merge accounts or recreate each old exchange as a separate sidebar chat; OpenAI describes this as “not a full account migration.”
- Extract the ZIP from the source export.
- Find
conversations.jsonor the numbered conversation JSON files in the extracted data. - Sign in to the destination personal account and start a new conversation.
- Upload the relevant JSON file for reference, or use a curated handoff if it is more practical for the task.
- Ask the destination chatbot to identify the context it can use, then test it with a prompt tied to a fact or preference in the handoff.
This workaround does not transfer memories, custom instructions, GPTs, files, subscriptions, workspace membership, or the original chat structure. If you need one of those items, treat it as a separate migration problem rather than assuming the JSON upload carries it over.

How do Claude exports and memory imports work?
Claude has two distinct paths: eligible individual-plan users can export information and chat history, while its memory-import flow is intended to bring in context from another AI provider. An export from one personal Claude account cannot be imported into another personal Claude account, according to Claude’s Help Center.
Export Claude information
On Claude’s web app or Claude Desktop, go to Settings → Privacy to export user information and chat history. This is an archive route, not a way to transfer that export into another personal Claude account.
Import memory from another provider
- Ask the source chatbot to list its stored memories and learned context in a single code block.
- Review the result and remove details you do not want to bring over.
- In Claude, open the Start import flow and paste the prepared text.
- Test a relevant prompt to check whether Claude retained the context you intended.
Anthropic describes memory imports as experimental and still in active development, and says imported context may not all be retained. Use the flow as a convenience, not as the sole copy of important instructions or project notes.
How do I import chats or memory into Gemini?
Gemini Apps documents two different routes: a memory handoff based on a prompt-and-response exchange, and a chat-history import using an export ZIP. The chat import has account, geography, and upload limits, so check eligibility before preparing a large archive.
Move memory or learned context
- In Gemini, copy the prompt it provides for asking another chatbot to summarize stored memories or context.
- Paste that prompt into the source chatbot and review its response.
- Copy the response into Gemini’s import-memory field.
- Try a short prompt that should use one of the imported preferences or facts.
Import a chat-history ZIP
- Download the source chatbot’s export ZIP.
- In Gemini Apps, open Import chats and select the ZIP file or files.
- Keep each file within Google’s stated 5 GB size limit and the upload total within five ZIP files per day. These limits are stated by Google in 2026.
- After import, open the resulting material and test whether the conversations you need are accessible in the intended way.
Google says this feature requires a personal Google Account. It is unavailable in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, and may also be unavailable in some supervised or work/school account contexts. The documentation establishes those eligibility limits; do not assume that a work or school account can use the same flow as a personal account.

What is the difference between exporting, importing, and uploading?
These words describe different parts of the move. Exporting creates a copy from the source; importing is a destination feature designed to bring material into that service; uploading or pasting supplies context, but may not create native chats or persistent memory.

When a provider’s instructions describe a memory import, use that feature for memory-like context. When they describe a file upload for reference, regard the file as a source the chatbot can consult in that conversation—not evidence that the account itself has migrated.
How can I check that the handoff worked?
Use a short test before depending on the destination for ongoing work. Test a small number of specific preferences and project facts rather than asking whether the migration succeeded in general.

- Choose one response preference, one project fact, and one decision from the handoff.
- Ask a new question that should make each item relevant, without repeating the answer in the question itself.
- Check whether the chatbot uses the information accurately and whether it distinguishes dated facts from open questions.
- If it misses something, make the handoff easier to scan, add a concise instruction about how to use it, or provide the relevant section directly in the conversation.
- Keep the source archive and handoff document available so you can correct omissions without relying on the destination’s memory.
A successful test shows that the destination can use the context you supplied in that setting. It does not establish that every conversation, attachment, setting, or memory from the source was transferred.

These steps reduce unnecessary disclosure, but they are not a substitute for reviewing the services’ current privacy controls or the contents of a particular export.
Which migration route should I choose?
Choose the smallest route that preserves what you actually need. A prompt collection does not require moving an entire history, while a record you may need to consult later warrants retaining the original export.
- Prompts and preferences only: make a short Markdown or plain-text handoff and paste it into the destination or use its memory flow.
- Project continuity: create a dated summary with decisions, constraints, terminology, and selected excerpts; keep source links or file names where useful.
- Reference to prior chats: retain the official ZIP and use a documented chat-import flow if available. Otherwise, upload a suitable JSON or ZIP where supported, or extract relevant notes into the handoff.
- Account-level items: verify each separately. A conversation export should not be treated as a transfer of subscriptions, memberships, custom instructions, files, or provider-specific features.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my ChatGPT export has not arrived yet?
OpenAI says export processing can take up to seven days. If it has not arrived after that window, use OpenAI’s account support or Privacy Portal guidance to check the request rather than repeatedly sharing account details through unofficial channels.
Can I keep a chatbot handoff in a USB backup?
Yes. A USB drive can hold an offline copy of the ZIP or handoff document, but it is optional; none of the documented export or import workflows requires one. For sensitive archives, protect the drive and keep access credentials separate from the files.
Should I upload the whole export ZIP or just a summary?
Use a summary when the goal is to carry selected preferences or project context into ordinary chats. A full archive is more useful when the destination has a documented history-import feature or you need a broader reference copy, but inspect it first because it can include sensitive account data.
Will imported chatbot memories always stay saved?
The documented Claude memory-import flow is experimental, and Anthropic says it may not retain all imported context. Keep an independent copy of essential instructions and project notes instead of treating a memory feature as your only record.
