Use a USB or USB-C data cable and the app that matches your computer: Finder on macOS Catalina or later, iTunes on older macOS, or Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. For an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle, put the music in the computer’s library first, then sync that library to the iPod. iTunes Store purchases can be copied from an iPhone to an authorized computer with Transfer Purchases. Apple Music subscription downloads are different: they use Sync Library and cannot be loaded onto those older iPod models through traditional iTunes syncing.

The safest workflow is to identify the iPod model and music type before connecting anything. A normal sync is primarily computer-to-device, and changing the computer library can replace music already on an iPod, so review every erase or replacement warning before accepting it.

Which app should I use to transfer music?

The correct app is determined by the computer, not by the cable. Apple separates device syncing among Finder, iTunes, and Apple Devices.

Computer App Where the device appears Typical music action
Mac with macOS Catalina or later Finder Finder sidebar under Locations Select the device, open Music, enable music syncing, choose all or selected content, then apply
Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier iTunes Device button in the iTunes window Open the Music tab, select the library or selected items, then click Apply or Sync
Windows Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on what is installed Select the connected device in the app Open Music, choose all or selected music, then start the sync

Apple summarizes the split as: “Sync music, movies, and more with the Finder, iTunes, or the Apple Devices app. The app you need depends on your Mac or PC.” App names and button placement can change slightly between releases, but the device, Music, selection, and sync sequence remains the same.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What happens during a normal sync?

The computer’s Apple Music or iTunes library is treated as the source. You choose whether the connected device receives the entire library or a subset such as particular artists, albums, genres, or playlists. The app then makes the selected music on the device match that selection; it is not a general command to copy every song from the iPhone back into a new computer library.

What kind of music are you moving?

Before choosing a transfer method, classify each song. Ownership and licensing determine whether the file can be copied, synchronized, or only made available through a subscription service.

Music on the iPhone Supported route Important limitation
Local, unprotected files already in the computer’s library Sync the computer library to the iPhone or iPod Sync sends the library to the device; it is not a documented extraction method for files that exist only on the iPhone
iTunes Store purchases Authorize the destination computer, connect the device, and choose Transfer Purchases The computer must be authorized for the Apple Account used to buy the music
Apple Music subscription songs Use Sync Library and downloads on devices signed in to the same Apple Account Apple Music subscribers cannot use traditional iTunes music syncing to put saved subscription songs on an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle

This distinction prevents a common mistake: connecting an iPhone to a new computer and expecting Finder or iTunes to rebuild the computer’s library automatically. Apple’s documented device-to-computer purchase path is specifically for iTunes Store purchases. Subscription tracks remain governed by the Apple Music account and its licensing.

How do I move iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone to a computer?

Use the purchase-transfer command after authorizing the destination computer. This copies eligible iTunes Store purchases to the computer’s library; it does not convert Apple Music subscription downloads into ordinary files.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Sign in to the destination computer with the Apple Account that bought the music.
  2. Authorize that computer in the music app’s account or authorization settings. In iTunes, this is the command to authorize the current computer.
  3. Connect the iPhone with a data-capable USB or USB-C cable and unlock it if prompted. Accept the trust prompt on the phone.
  4. Open iTunes or Apple Devices and select the iPhone. Choose Transfer Purchases from the device commands. If the wording differs in your release, use the command that transfers purchases from the connected device.
  5. Wait for the transfer to finish, then check the computer’s Music or iTunes library for the albums and songs.
  6. Keep the original iPhone connected until the transfer completes, and eject it from the app before unplugging.

If a purchase is missing, verify that the computer is authorized with the same Apple Account that bought it. A song obtained through an Apple Music subscription will not appear as a transferable iTunes Store purchase.

How do I put music on an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle?

These click-wheel and clip-style models require a computer library and traditional iTunes syncing. Apple states that an iPod classic, iPod nano, or iPod shuffle must be synced with iTunes because there is no other way to add content to it.

Prepare the computer library

  1. Import or download the music you own into the computer’s Apple Music or iTunes library. If the tracks are iTunes Store purchases on the iPhone, use Transfer Purchases first.
  2. For subscription music, do not plan on loading Apple Music downloads onto one of these older iPods. Use Sync Library on supported current devices instead.
  3. Confirm that the library contains the songs you intend to keep on the iPod before connecting it. This is especially important when the iPod was previously synchronized with another computer.

Sync from a newer Mac

  1. Connect the iPod with its compatible data cable and open Finder.
  2. Select the iPod under Locations in the Finder sidebar.
  3. Open the Music tab and select Sync music onto [iPod] or the equivalent sync checkbox.
  4. Choose Entire music library or Selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists.
  5. If you choose selected content, tick only the items that fit the iPod’s storage and your listening needs.
  6. Click Apply or Sync, wait for the progress to finish, then eject the iPod before disconnecting it.

Sync from an older Mac or Windows PC with iTunes

  1. Open iTunes and connect the iPod. Select the device button when it appears.
  2. Choose Music in the device settings.
  3. Enable Sync Music, then choose the entire library or selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists.
  4. Click Apply or Sync. Do not unplug the iPod while iTunes is still applying changes.
  5. Use iTunes’ eject control before removing the cable.

On Windows, Apple’s guide describes the same choice: sync all music or a selection from the Windows computer to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod. The available controls depend on whether Apple Devices or iTunes is installed.

How do I sync an iPod touch?

An iPod touch follows the iOS-device workflow rather than the special rules for an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle. Use Finder on macOS Catalina or later, Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows, and iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier.

  2. Select the iPod touch in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
  3. Open Music, enable music syncing, and choose the entire library or selected playlists and other categories.
  4. Review the summary of changes, apply the sync, and eject the iPod touch when it is finished.

Do not assume that instructions for a click-wheel iPod apply to an iPod touch. The touch model uses the same general device-management path as an iPhone, while classic, nano, and shuffle depend on a traditional iTunes library.

How can I avoid deleting music already on my iPod?

Automatic syncing can replace selected content when the iPod is associated with a different computer library. Before clicking through a warning, make sure the destination library contains the music you want to retain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify the current library: Check which computer originally synced the iPod, if known, and avoid switching libraries casually.
  • Back up first: Keep a backup of the computer library and any music you are relying on before changing sync settings.
  • Start with selected content: Sync chosen playlists, artists, or albums instead of the entire library when you need tighter control.
  • Use manual management where available: Manual management lets you add individual items rather than replacing the complete selected music set.
  • Read the warning: If the app offers Remove and Sync, it is warning that selected content on the device will be erased and replaced with music from the new computer.
  • Stop if the list is wrong: Cancel the operation, return to the library, and correct the selection before applying changes.

Switching computers is the highest-risk moment. A cable connection by itself does not erase music; accepting a replacement command does.

What cable do I need?

You need a USB data cable that matches the ports on the iPhone or iPod and the computer. Charging-only cables can power the device but cannot complete a sync.

Older iPod connector USB-A or USB-C through a suitable data cable or adapter Use the connector made for that iPod generation and verify that the cable supports data

If the device charges but never appears in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, suspect the cable, adapter, or USB port first. Try a known data-capable cable and a different port, then reconnect with the device unlocked.

Can Apple Music songs be put on an older iPod?

Not through the traditional iTunes music-sync method for an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle. Apple Music subscription songs use Sync Library: signed-in devices with the same Apple Account can see the library and download eligible music for offline playback, but those downloads are not ordinary files that can be copied to the older iPod models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the choice straightforward:

  • For an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle, use music files in the computer’s library, including eligible iTunes Store purchases after transferring them.
  • For current Apple devices, use Sync Library and download music inside the supported music app.
  • Do not delete a subscription download from the iPhone expecting a traditional computer sync to recreate it as an unprotected library file.

Apple notes that availability and features can vary by country or region, so the options shown in your account may not be identical everywhere.

Which transfer method should I choose?

Your goal Best method Direction Control and risk
Put owned songs from a computer on an older iPod iTunes library sync Computer to iPod Entire library or selected items; changing libraries can trigger replacement
Copy iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone to a computer Authorize the computer, then Transfer Purchases iPhone to computer Limited to eligible purchases tied to the authorized Apple Account
Keep the same subscription library on current Apple devices Sync Library and optional downloads Cloud library to signed-in devices Requires the applicable Apple Music subscription and account access
Put subscription downloads on an iPod classic, nano, or shuffle Not supported through traditional sync Not available Use owned files for the older iPod or listen through a supported current device
Limit what an iPod receives Selected playlists, artists, albums, genres, or manual management Computer to device More control and less storage use, but you must maintain the selection

What should I do if the device does not appear?

Work through the connection and software checks in order rather than repeatedly clicking Sync.

  1. Confirm that the cable carries data and that its connectors fit both devices without a loose adapter.
  2. Unlock the iPhone or iPod and respond to any trust or permission prompt.
  3. Open the correct app for the operating system: Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
  4. Try another USB port and, if available, another known data-capable cable.
  5. Close and reopen the app, reconnect the device, and look again under Finder Locations or the app’s device list.
  6. If the device appears but music options are unavailable, verify the model. An older iPod may require iTunes-style library syncing, while an iPod touch uses the iOS-device workflow.

What should I check before disconnecting?

A finished progress bar is not the only safety check. Confirm that the intended songs are listed, wait for the app to finish applying changes, and use its eject command. Removing the cable during an active sync can leave the device with an incomplete selection, so disconnect only after the app reports that it is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sync one iPod with two different computer libraries?

You can connect an iPod to another computer, but automatic syncing is tied to the selected computer library. If the new library is different, the app may offer Remove and Sync, which replaces the selected device content; cancel that prompt unless you intend to switch libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an internet connection for a USB music sync?

A cable sync of music already stored in the computer library does not require streaming access. Internet access is needed for account authorization, downloading purchases, or using Sync Library to make Apple Music content available across devices.

Why does my iPhone charge but not show up on the computer?

Charging only proves that power is reaching the phone. Use a cable certified for data, unlock the iPhone, accept its trust prompt, and try another USB port before changing sync settings.

Will transferring purchases remove the songs from my iPhone?

Transfer Purchases copies eligible iTunes Store purchases to the authorized computer; it is not a command to delete those purchases from the iPhone. Apple Music subscription downloads are a separate category and are not handled by that command.
