Yes. You can use a Bluehost SSL certificate on another hosting provider when the certificate covers the exact domain being served, you have its certificate file (CRT), matching private key (KEY), and CA bundle, and the destination host allows manual SSL installation. The move is not a one-click Bluehost transfer: you may need a certificate-signing request (CSR) from the new server, DNS or CNAME validation, and a new renewal process. If the new host offers AutoSSL with Let’s Encrypt, issuing a replacement there is often simpler than carrying a paid certificate across hosts.
Can I use my Bluehost SSL certificate on another host?
Yes, because an SSL/TLS certificate is issued for a domain name rather than permanently locked to one hosting account. Bluehost’s support guidance, updated August 14, 2026, says a certificate can be set up on any compatible server when you have the CRT, private KEY and CA bundle. Compatibility and file access are the practical limits.

The certificate must cover the exact hostname visitors will request. A certificate assigned to example.com is not automatically valid for every other hostname; coverage depends on the names listed in the certificate, including any subject-alternative names (SANs). Bluehost also states that the assigned domain cannot be changed after assignment. If the new site uses a different domain, you need a new certificate or a reissue for that domain.
Your destination provider must expose a manual certificate-installation function. Some managed plans accept only certificates issued through their own automation, while cPanel and other control panels commonly provide fields for the certificate, key and intermediate chain. Bluehost recommends using its certificates with Bluehost hosting for easier setup and support, and says support is limited when the certificate is installed on an outside host.

Which files do I need before moving the certificate?
Collect all three certificate components before changing DNS or canceling the old hosting account. A certificate without its matching private key cannot authenticate your server, and a missing intermediate bundle can leave browsers unable to build a trusted chain.
| File or value | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| CRT (certificate) | Identifies your domain and contains the public certificate issued by the certificate authority. | Confirm the domain and every SAN match the hostnames your new server will serve. Check its expiration date. |
| KEY (private key) | Proves that the server is authorized to use the certificate. | It must be the key generated for the CSR used by this certificate. Never email or publish it. |
| CA bundle (intermediate certificates) | Completes the trust chain between your certificate and browsers’ trusted root certificates. | Keep the full bundle in the order supplied by the issuer; the destination panel may call it “CA,” “CABUNDLE” or “certificate chain.” |
cPanel’s SSL/TLS documentation, updated July 8, 2026, strongly recommends saving a copy of the private key in a safe location. Store it in an encrypted password manager or restricted administrator storage, and remove temporary copies from downloads and shared chat after installation.
What does the new hosting provider need to support?
Ask the new host’s support team or documentation these questions before you migrate:
- Does this plan allow customer-supplied certificates, or only certificates issued by the host?
- Can I install a CRT, private KEY and CA bundle separately?
- Which server software and certificate format are required?
- Can the host generate a CSR, and does it require that CSR for a reissue?
- Who performs renewal and reinstalls the certificate after renewal?
Manual installation is a capability of the destination service, not a feature Bluehost can force remotely. A provider may accept PEM text pasted into a control panel, require separate files, or require an administrator to install it at the server level. Get the exact procedure and any plan restrictions in writing before you begin.

How do I transfer a Bluehost certificate step by step?
Use this sequence to reduce downtime. Keep the old site and certificate available until HTTPS works on the new server.
- Confirm the names covered. In the certificate details, verify the apex domain,
wwwname and any other SANs that the new server will answer for. A hostname omitted from the certificate will produce a browser name-mismatch warning. - Back up the certificate materials. Export or download the CRT, the matching KEY and the CA bundle. If you cannot locate the key, stop here and plan a reissue; a private key cannot be reconstructed from a CRT.
- Confirm manual-install support. Ask the new host which interface, server type and text or file format it expects. Do not paste a private key into a support ticket unless the provider explicitly supplies a secure transfer method.
- Generate a CSR on the new server when required. Some Bluehost workflows ask for a CSR from the server where the certificate will be used. Generate it in the destination host’s control panel, retaining the resulting private key, and submit the CSR in Bluehost’s SSL control panel. The private key created with that CSR must remain paired with the issued certificate.
- Complete domain validation. When DNS is managed away from Bluehost, Bluehost documents CNAME validation as an option. Add the exact CNAME record it provides at your DNS provider, without changing the token, name or target. DNS propagation can take a few hours depending on the record’s time to live (TTL), and validation cannot finish until public DNS resolvers can see the record.
- Install the three components. In the new host’s SSL interface, paste or upload the CRT, its matching KEY and the CA bundle. cPanel’s installer presents separate fields for these values; save or apply the configuration after all three are present.
- Point traffic to the new server. Change the relevant A, AAAA or CNAME records only after the certificate is installed, or use a temporary test hostname if the provider supports one. Allow for DNS caching while different visitors reach different servers.
- Test every covered hostname. Open the site over HTTPS, inspect the certificate name and expiration, test both the apex and
wwwversions (plus other SANs), and check that HTTP redirects to HTTPS as intended. Verify login, checkout, APIs, images, scripts and webhooks because mixed-content or hostname-specific failures can remain after the padlock appears. - Document renewal ownership. Record the expiry date, validation method, certificate files’ location and the person or system responsible for renewal. A certificate that is copied successfully today will still expire unless a renewal process is arranged on the new host.
The ninth item above is operational rather than a second certificate transfer: it prevents an otherwise successful migration from ending in an unexpected expiration.

On a cPanel account that permits manual certificates, open SSL/TLS and choose Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS) (the wording can vary by host). Select the domain, then provide the CRT, private key and CA bundle in their separate fields. If cPanel recognizes the key and certificate as a pair, it will populate or validate the related fields; review them before installing.
After installation, use the account’s SSL-management page to confirm that the intended domain is selected and that the chain is present. A successful save only proves that the panel accepted the data; it does not prove that DNS points to this account or that every virtual host uses the new certificate. Test the public URL after DNS changes.

What if I do not have the private key?
You cannot safely install the existing certificate without its matching private key. The CRT contains public information and cannot be used to derive the secret key. Search the original server’s SSL or security area and any secure administrator backup, but do not guess at a key or substitute one from another certificate.
If the key is permanently lost, generate a new key and CSR on the destination host and request a reissue through the certificate provider’s control panel. The reissued certificate will have to pass domain validation again. Depending on the destination host, replacing it with that host’s AutoSSL or Let’s Encrypt certificate may take less effort and avoid another manual transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo I have to buy SSL again when I move hosting?
Not necessarily. If the existing certificate is still valid, covers the same domain names and you possess the matching key and chain, installing it on the new compatible server can avoid an immediate repurchase. The financial value depends on the remaining term and on whether the new host charges for manual installation.
A replacement can nevertheless be the better operational choice. AutoSSL with Let’s Encrypt is commonly automated by the destination host, including issuance, validation and renewal, whereas a manually moved certificate leaves you responsible for future files and installation. Compare the work and support you receive rather than assuming that retaining a paid certificate is always cheaper.

| Approach | Best when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse the Bluehost certificate | The domain names and private key are available, the certificate has useful time remaining, and the new host accepts manual installation. | You must transfer sensitive files, complete any required validation and arrange renewal yourself or with the host. |
| Reissue the certificate | The old key is missing, the server requires a new CSR, or you want a clean key generated on the destination host. | Validation and installation happen again; the old certificate may no longer be needed. |
| Use destination-host AutoSSL/Let’s Encrypt | The new provider supports it and you prefer automatic issuance and renewal. | You replace the existing certificate and must follow the host’s domain-validation and coverage rules. |
Who renews the certificate after the move?
Renewal responsibility changes when hosting changes. Bluehost’s tools may not renew a certificate installed on an unrelated server, and Bluehost support for an external-host setup is limited. Ask the new provider whether it will renew and reinstall a manually imported certificate, whether you must upload each renewed CRT and CA bundle, or whether its automation can replace the certificate entirely.
Set a calendar reminder well before expiration even if the host promises assistance. Keep the original CSR and key information, because a renewal may be issued against the same key or require a new CSR. If you change keys, install the newly issued certificate and its corresponding chain as a matched set.

Why does the browser show a certificate warning after installation?
Most warnings after a migration come from a name mismatch, an incomplete chain, the wrong virtual host, or DNS still reaching the old server.
- Name mismatch: The URL’s hostname is not listed in the certificate. Install a certificate covering that hostname or serve the correct domain.
- Untrusted or incomplete chain: Reinstall the CA bundle exactly as supplied. A CRT alone may not provide the intermediate certificates a browser needs.
- Wrong server: Check A, AAAA and CNAME records and wait for cached DNS responses to expire. Test from more than one network.
- Wrong key: Replace the key with the one generated for the certificate’s CSR, then reinstall the matching CRT and chain.
- Mixed content or redirect problems: Update hard-coded HTTP assets and application settings, and verify that HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects do not create loops.
cPanel’s troubleshooting guidance treats a domain mismatch as a cause of browser warnings. Do not dismiss a warning simply because one browser session shows a padlock; inspect each hostname and application path that matters to your visitors.

What should I check before shutting down Bluehost hosting?
Use this migration checklist while both accounts are still available:
- Certificate names, expiration date and issuer recorded.
- CRT, matching private KEY and CA bundle backed up securely.
- Destination host confirms manual installation or AutoSSL support for the plan.
- CSR generated on the destination server if the chosen workflow requires one.
- Domain validation completed, including any CNAME record and DNS propagation time.
- Certificate installed on the correct account and virtual host.
- Apex,
wwwand every SAN tested over HTTPS. - Redirects, forms, APIs, images, scripts and webhooks tested.
- Renewal owner, method and reminder documented.
- Old hosting retained until DNS has settled and the new HTTPS service is confirmed.
No authoritative numeric statistic establishes a general success rate or universal migration time for moving certificates between hosts. The variable factors are the destination host’s controls, DNS TTL, validation method and whether the private key is available, so plan around those conditions rather than a fixed number of hours.
Is moving the certificate worth the effort?
Reuse makes sense when the certificate has substantial validity left, its exact domain coverage is still correct, and the new host supports manual installation. A host-managed AutoSSL or Let’s Encrypt certificate is usually the lower-maintenance option when it is available, especially for sites that do not need a particular paid certificate product. In either case, the migration succeeds only when the certificate, key, chain, DNS and renewal plan are treated as one operating system rather than as a single file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the domain name on my existing Bluehost certificate after moving it?
No. Bluehost says the domain assigned to a certificate cannot be changed after assignment. If the new site uses another domain, obtain or reissue a certificate for that domain instead of trying to edit the existing certificate.
Does changing DNS cancel or invalidate the certificate?
Changing DNS does not itself revoke a still-valid certificate, but it determines which server visitors contact. Keep validation records available until issuance or reissue is complete, and remove obsolete records only after the new certificate and DNS path are working.
Can one certificate cover both the root domain and subdomains?
Only if those names appear in the certificate’s SAN list or are covered by an appropriate wildcard name. Check the certificate details before migration; do not assume that coverage of the root domain includes every subdomain.
Should I cancel my old hosting account immediately after installing the certificate?
No. Keep the old account until public DNS has settled and you have tested all important HTTPS URLs on the new server. This gives you a rollback path if a cached resolver or an overlooked hostname still reaches the old site.
