There is no universal “200,000-token fee.” Your bill depends on the model, platform, token categories, cache treatment, and the provider’s exact long-context rule. Start by separating ordinary input, output, cached input (or cache hits), and cache writes. Then determine whether the request crosses a provider-specific threshold and apply the rate for each category, including any batch, speed, residency, or platform modifier that is documented for that service. Google Cloud’s cited Agent Platform pricing moves all input and output tokens to long-context rates at 200,000 or more input tokens, while OpenAI publishes separate short- and long-context rates and Anthropic documents modifiers that can apply across a full context window. The method below lets you estimate a request without treating one vendor’s rule as everyone’s rule.
What exactly should an LLM cost estimate include?
A useful estimate treats every billable token category separately. The headline input price is not a total request price because output, cache reads, and cache writes can have different rates. Record the model and platform before doing arithmetic: a provider’s direct API and a cloud-hosted service may expose different schedules, currencies, or regional scopes.

Ordinary input tokens
These are tokens sent as uncached context for the request: system instructions, conversation history, retrieved documents, tool definitions, and the new user message. Count all of them according to the provider’s tokenizer and billing rules. Do not assume that only the visible prompt is counted.
Output tokens
Output covers tokens generated by the model. A request with a short prompt can still cost more than expected if the model produces a long completion. Set a maximum output budget for estimates, and distinguish the requested maximum from the tokens actually generated when reviewing usage.

Cached input and cache writes
Some services price tokens read from an established cache differently from uncached input. Creating or writing a cache can also have its own rate. Keep cache-hit tokens and cache-write tokens in separate columns; combining them with ordinary input hides the very savings or overhead caching is intended to show.
Documented modifiers
Batch processing, fast or priority modes, data-residency choices, and platform-specific adjustments may change a base rate. Add a modifier only when the provider’s current documentation says it applies to your model and request path. A modifier is not automatically triggered merely because a prompt is long.

What is the basic formula for a request?
Calculate each category independently, then add the results. If rates are quoted per million tokens, the general model is:
estimated charge = (input_tokens × input_rate
+ output_tokens × output_rate
+ cached_input_tokens × cached_input_rate
+ cache_write_tokens × cache_write_rate)
/ 1,000,000
Use the provider’s own unit if it is not per million tokens. If a category is not priced separately, set its quantity to zero or use the documented rate for that category; never silently substitute the ordinary input rate. Apply a batch, speed, residency, or platform multiplier only to the categories and tiers identified in the price schedule.
This is a modeling template, not a universal billing specification. Providers can define tokenization, minimums, rounding, cache lifetimes, and tier boundaries differently. Keep the rate card’s effective date beside every estimate so an old spreadsheet is not mistaken for a current quote.
How does pricing change at 200,000 tokens?
The threshold is provider-specific. Before calculating a “long-context surcharge,” identify what the provider measures (usually input context), what changes at the boundary, and whether the change affects input only or every token in the request.

Google Cloud Agent Platform: an all-token long-context rule in the cited arrangement
Google Cloud’s cited pricing page states that when query input context is at least 200,000 tokens, all tokens—including output—are charged at long-context rates for the listed Agent Platform arrangement. A 200,000-token request therefore cannot be modeled by applying a long-context input price to input while leaving output at the short-context output price. Confirm the model, region, currency, and platform scope on the current Google Cloud table before using this rule.
OpenAI: separate short- and long-context rates
OpenAI publishes short-context and long-context rates in its pricing table, along with separate input, output, cached-input, and cache-write categories where applicable. The table’s exact threshold and model eligibility determine which row applies; do not infer that every model switches at exactly 200,000 input tokens. For an OpenAI estimate, classify the request against the model’s published context tier first, then use the rates for each token category in that tier.
Anthropic: cache pricing and a documented fast-mode example
Anthropic documents separate cache-write and cache-hit prices, and says cached input tokens still count toward the context window alongside ordinary input. Its pricing material describes fast-mode pricing applying across the full context window, including requests over 200,000 input tokens. That is an example of a pricing modifier, not a blanket statement that every Claude request above 200,000 tokens incurs a surcharge. Verify whether fast mode, model, and platform are selected for the request you are costing.
Which details must match when comparing providers?
A fair comparison holds the workload constant while changing one provider or model. The following checklist prevents an input-only comparison from producing a misleading “cheapest” result.
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it changes the total |
|---|---|---|
| Model and platform | Exact model name, direct API or cloud-hosted service, and inference route | Different platforms can publish different rates or feature availability. |
| Context trigger | Context-window limit and the precise threshold condition | One service may change all-token pricing while another publishes separate long-context rows. |
| Token mix | Input, output, cached-input, cache-hit, and cache-write quantities | Each category may have its own rate; output volume can dominate a low-input request. |
| Processing mode | Standard, batch, fast, priority, or other documented mode | Modes can add a multiplier or discount across specified categories. |
| Region and currency | Inference region, residency option, currency, and effective date | Regional schedules and currency conversions can change the payable amount. |
| Cache behavior | Cache-write volume, hit ratio, and cache lifetime assumptions | A high hit ratio can move tokens to a cheaper read category, while writes add an initial charge. |
Published prices change. Timestamp the table or spreadsheet and recheck the official OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Cloud page immediately before committing to a production budget.
How do I calculate a long-context request step by step?
Use this sequence for every model and platform rather than carrying a 200,000-token assumption from one vendor to another.

- Define the request scope. Write down the model, API or cloud platform, region, currency, processing mode, and date checked. Include any data-residency or priority option that changes the price.
- Measure the context. Count system text, conversation history, retrieved material, tool schemas, and the current user message with the provider’s tokenizer. Record the input total before subtracting cached portions.
- Split cache categories. Mark how many input tokens are ordinary, served as cache hits, and written to a cache. If the provider does not expose a category, follow its stated accounting rather than guessing.
- Estimate output. Use an expected completion size for planning and a separate maximum for a worst-case budget. Keep generated output distinct from input context.
- Apply the threshold rule. Check whether the provider tests input context, total context, or another measure. Determine whether crossing the boundary changes input rates only or moves all input and output tokens to a long-context schedule.
- Look for modifiers. Add only documented batch, speed, fast-mode, residency, or platform adjustments. Note whether a modifier applies to the whole context window or only selected categories.
- Run the formula. Multiply each token quantity by its matching rate, sum the products, and divide by the rate unit (often one million).
- Validate after the call. Compare your estimate with the provider’s usage fields and invoice. Investigate differences caused by hidden system tokens, rounding, retries, tool calls, cache expiry, or a tier selected at runtime.
Can you show a worked example without inventing a price?
Yes. Suppose a request contains 190,000 ordinary input tokens, 20,000 cache-hit tokens, 8,000 cache-write tokens, and produces 5,000 output tokens. Let r_i, r_h, r_w, and r_o represent the provider’s published rates per million tokens for ordinary input, cache hits, cache writes, and output.
charge = (190,000 × r_i
+ 20,000 × r_h
+ 8,000 × r_w
+ 5,000 × r_o) / 1,000,000
If the same request is evaluated under a rule that treats 200,000 or more input-context tokens as long context, the 190,000 ordinary plus 20,000 cached input tokens produce 210,000 input-context tokens. Select the long-context rates before repeating the calculation. Under Google Cloud’s cited arrangement, output would move to the long-context output rate as well; under a provider that publishes separate short- and long-context rows, use the row that matches that model’s documented trigger.
For a sensitivity check, run the formula three times: expected output, maximum output, and a lower cache-hit ratio. This shows whether your budget is driven by generation length, cache behavior, or the tier boundary rather than by the prompt alone.
How should caching be counted in the context window?
Caching changes the rate category, not necessarily the context length. Anthropic states that cached input tokens count toward the context window together with ordinary input tokens. Therefore, a request with 180,000 uncached tokens and 30,000 cached tokens has 210,000 input-context tokens for any rule that measures the full input context.
Model cache lifecycle events explicitly. A first request may write a large prefix, later requests may read it as cache hits, and an expired cache may require another write. Use separate rows for writes and reads, and document the assumed hit ratio. If a provider bills cache writes at a premium, a workload with frequent invalidation can cost more than one with fewer but stable cache entries even when the visible prompt is identical.
What tools make the estimate auditable?
A spreadsheet is sufficient if every assumption is visible. Recommended columns are: date checked, provider, platform, model, region, mode, context tokens, ordinary input, cache hits, cache writes, output, threshold rule, each rate, modifier, and estimated charge. Add a notes column for tokenizer version or usage-field names.

For automated estimates, keep rates in a versioned configuration rather than hard-coding them in application logic. A minimal implementation can mirror the formula:
def estimate(inp, out, cache_hit, cache_write,
input_rate, output_rate, hit_rate, write_rate):
total = (inp * input_rate
+ out * output_rate
+ cache_hit * hit_rate
+ cache_write * write_rate)
return total / 1_000_000
Add a separate function that selects short- or long-context rates according to the model’s documented rule. Log the selected tier with each request so a later invoice review can reproduce the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What mistakes make long-context estimates unreliable?
- Applying a universal 200,000 rule. The same threshold can mean different things—or not exist—for another model or platform.
- Comparing input prices only. Two services with similar input rates can produce very different totals when output, cache writes, or long-context output rates differ.
- Mixing platform scopes. A direct API price is not automatically the price for a cloud provider’s managed platform.
- Ignoring cached tokens in context accounting. A cache hit may receive a lower rate while still contributing to the context-window threshold.
- Using a stale rate card. Record the effective date and recheck pricing before publication or a budget decision.
- Confusing maximum output with actual output. A generation cap is a risk bound, not a statement of tokens the model will always emit.
- Hiding modifiers in a blended rate. Keep standard, batch, fast, and residency adjustments visible so a change in mode does not look like random cost variance.
- Failing to reconcile usage. Retries, tool calls, hidden instructions, rounding, and cache expiry can add billable tokens that were absent from the initial prompt estimate.
How much does a 200k-token prompt cost?
There is no single answer without a model, platform, token mix, and rate card. A 200,000-token input with 2,000 output tokens can cost a different amount from the same input with 20,000 output tokens, and cache hits or writes change the calculation again.
Does crossing 200,000 tokens always double the price?
No. A provider may switch to a separate long-context schedule, move both input and output to long-context rates, or apply a documented modifier only in a particular mode. Check the model’s threshold definition and affected categories instead of assuming a fixed percentage increase.
Do cached tokens count toward the context limit?
At least one major provider explicitly counts cached input alongside ordinary input for context-window accounting. Treat cached tokens as part of the measured context unless the provider’s documentation says otherwise, even when their billing rate is lower.
Why can my invoice exceed a spreadsheet estimate?
Common causes include retries, tool or function-call payloads, hidden system content, cache misses, tokenization differences, rounding, and a different region or processing mode than the one recorded. Compare the provider’s per-request usage fields with your logged model, tier, and cache events before changing the formula.

What is the safest way to budget long-context workloads?
Budget with the exact model and platform, a worst-case output cap, a conservative cache-hit assumption, and the documented long-context rule. Maintain a timestamped rate table and reconcile estimates against usage records after launch; that process catches tier changes and cache behavior that a single headline price cannot reveal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are system messages and tool schemas included in the token count?
Usually they are part of the request context, even though users may not see them in the chat transcript. Use the provider’s tokenizer or usage fields to verify whether tool definitions, safety instructions, and other hidden content are counted for your endpoint.

Streaming changes how output arrives, not necessarily how output tokens are priced. Estimate the same generated-token quantity, then verify whether your platform reports streamed chunks, retries, or interrupted generations as separate usage events.
How often should a pricing model be refreshed?
Refresh it whenever you change model, platform, region, processing mode, or cache configuration, and recheck the official price page before a contract or forecast is finalized. Keep the effective date with the rates so historical invoices can still be reconstructed.
What if a provider does not publish cache-write or cache-hit rates?
Do not infer them from ordinary input pricing. Model the categories the provider exposes, mark unpriced categories as requiring confirmation, and use actual usage and invoice data to determine how that service accounts for caching.
