You can switch an application between LLM providers without rewriting its business logic if you treat the model API as an adapter behind an application-owned contract. Keep prompts, domain workflows, conversation state, and product decisions in your code; isolate client construction, request translation, response parsing, streaming events, authentication, and error mapping in provider-specific modules. Then test the behaviors your application actually uses against each provider and model.

A common or “OpenAI-compatible” API can reduce mechanical changes, but it does not make providers behaviorally interchangeable. Compatibility endpoints may cover only a subset of a native API, adapters can be best-effort, and provider interfaces change over time. The safest migration is therefore a measured abstraction with explicit escape hatches, not a lowest-common-denominator wrapper.

What makes an LLM API migration difficult?

The visible call is often just one function, but an application depends on a larger contract: request fields, response shape, stream events, tool-call semantics, usage accounting, conversation state, multimodal parts, authentication, retries, and error classes. Two APIs may both accept a chat prompt while differing in schema validation, token accounting, tool arguments, or the point at which a stream reports completion.

Provider documentation reflects those differences. Microsoft’s provider guidance warns that capabilities vary by provider and API surface. Google describes a feature ceiling for its OpenAI compatibility layer, while Hugging Face documents its compatible endpoint for chat completions and directs other tasks to inference clients. A migration that compiles can still change application behavior.

Start by defining what “unchanged” means for your product. It might mean preserving a JSON response contract, keeping tool execution reliable, retaining conversation history, or maintaining a particular streaming user experience. Do not promise portability for features you have not tested.

How should I inventory the current API contract?

Make a written inventory before choosing an abstraction. Record the current provider, endpoint, SDK and API versions, deployed models, regions, authentication method, and every request and response field your code reads or writes. Include provider-managed state, such as conversation or file identifiers, because that state may not transfer to another service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture request and response details

  • Transport: base URL, HTTP method, REST, gRPC, or SDK calls; timeout, retry, and proxy settings.
  • Authentication: API keys, OAuth tokens, managed identity, environment variables, key rotation, and per-tenant credentials.
  • Model selection: model identifiers, deployment names, region-specific aliases, fallback models, and any required API-version parameter.
  • Messages and content: roles, system instructions, text, images, audio, video, files, metadata, and content-part ordering.
  • Generation controls: temperature, token limits, stop sequences, sampling controls, safety settings, and provider-specific options.
  • Output: text extraction, structured JSON, schema-constrained output, finish reasons, citations or grounding metadata, tool calls, and refusal or safety fields.
  • Streaming: event types, incremental text, tool-call fragments, usage events, terminal events, disconnect handling, and partial-output recovery.
  • Usage and billing data: input and output tokens, cached tokens, request identifiers, latency timestamps, and fields used for quotas or customer reporting.
  • Errors: HTTP status, provider error code, retry-after value, validation details, content-policy responses, rate limits, authentication failures, and transient versus permanent categories.
  • State: conversation IDs, uploaded-file IDs, assistant or session IDs, tool state, and whether the provider or your application owns the history.

List the behaviors your users notice

Turn the inventory into acceptance criteria. Examples include “returns an object matching this schema,” “calls the calendar tool with valid arguments,” “renders tokens as they arrive,” “continues a conversation after a process restart,” or “reports usage to the tenant ledger.” Mark each criterion as required, optional, or provider-specific. This list becomes the migration test plan and prevents an abstraction from silently dropping a feature.

Which integration approach should I choose?

Choose the smallest boundary that protects your application from churn while preserving capabilities you actually need. A native integration is not automatically better, and a compatibility layer is not automatically portable.

Approach Useful when Trade-offs to investigate
Provider-native SDK or API You need current provider capabilities, custom request behavior, or the provider’s complete model surface. More vendor-specific code and migration work. Google describes direct integration as providing full API and model feature access while requiring more manual implementation and validation.
OpenAI-compatible endpoint Your workflow is covered by the compatibility surface and you want to reuse an existing client shape. The native API may expose more features. Google documents a feature ceiling, and Hugging Face describes its compatible endpoint as chat-completions-only.
Third-party adapter or library You need provider coverage, routing, or a common library interface for your stack. You inherit another compatibility layer and its release cadence. OpenAI Agents SDK documentation labels its Any-LLM and LiteLLM integrations best-effort beta and recommends validating the exact backend for required features.
Gateway or inference aggregator Central routing, provider selection, policy enforcement, credentials, or API management is important. Adds an infrastructure boundary with its own translation, observability, limits, and failure modes. Confirm how it handles the exact features and events your application uses.

Compare options on feature coverage, native capability access, portability of your actual workload, dependency burden, routing and control requirements, and validation effort. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for cost, performance, or reliability; measure those for your prompts, models, traffic, and region.

How do I design a provider-neutral boundary?

Put an application-owned interface between business logic and provider clients. The interface should describe the behavior your product needs, not mirror one vendor’s request schema.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the core contract small but meaningful

A practical contract can expose an operation such as generate(request, options) and return a normalized result containing text, structured data when available, tool calls, finish status, usage, request ID, and provider metadata. A separate stream(request, options) operation can yield normalized events such as text delta, tool-call delta, usage, completion, and error.

Represent messages and multimodal content in your own types. For example, a message can contain ordered parts with a type, payload, and optional detail. Do not force every provider option into the common type. Keep provider-neutral controls in the shared request and pass explicitly named provider options through an escape-hatch field.

Hide four kinds of provider-specific code

  • Client construction: SDK initialization, base URL, credentials, deployment selection, and API version.
  • Request conversion: role and content mapping, schema format, tool declaration, generation parameters, and multimodal encoding.
  • Response conversion: text extraction, structured-output parsing, tool-call assembly, finish reasons, usage normalization, and metadata.
  • Error conversion: map provider errors to stable application categories such as authentication, invalid request, rate limit, transient upstream failure, policy refusal, and unknown upstream error while retaining the original code and request ID for diagnostics.

Keep the original provider response in a restricted diagnostic field when policy permits. It is useful for debugging and for implementing a new feature without changing the public contract, but do not make application logic depend on an undocumented field.

Use explicit escape hatches

A common interface that exposes only plain text will eventually block a required native feature. Add a capability declaration or a provider-specific operation for features that do not map cleanly. For example, a connector can advertise structured output, tool calling, image input, or native conversation state support. If a workflow requires a feature that another provider cannot implement, fail clearly or route that request to a connector that can, rather than silently approximating it.

What is a practical step-by-step migration plan?

Run the migration as a sequence of reversible changes. Keep the existing provider available until the new path passes behavior and operational checks.

  1. Freeze a baseline. Record the current SDK and API versions, model and deployment identifiers, representative prompts, expected output fixtures, tool definitions, stream traces, error cases, and usage records. Save privacy-safe examples that exercise short and long inputs, refusals, malformed tool arguments, timeouts, and disconnects.
  2. Define the application contract. Write the request, normalized response, stream-event, usage, and error types your business logic will consume. Separate required behavior from provider-specific enhancements.
  3. Wrap the existing provider first. Implement the interface around the current integration without changing product code. This exposes assumptions and gives you a compatibility baseline.
  4. Add the target connector. Convert your internal request into the target provider’s native or compatible format. Parse every response path, including empty content, multiple tool calls, refusal fields, partial streams, and provider errors.
  5. Map authentication and lifecycle settings. Configure credentials, API versions, model availability, region or deployment constraints, timeouts, retries, and rate limits independently for each connector. Never copy a provider’s model identifier or API-version default into shared business logic.
  6. Run behavior-focused tests. Execute the same fixtures against the old and new connectors. Compare output shape, required fields, tool-call names and arguments, stream ordering, finish status, usage data, conversation continuity, and error classification.
  7. Introduce controlled traffic. Start with an internal environment or a small percentage of requests. Record connector, provider, model, endpoint, latency, status, token usage, retry count, and request ID so a regression can be attributed to the exact combination.
  8. Keep rollback simple. Select the connector through configuration or routing policy, not a code redeploy. Preserve the old connector until production traffic has passed the acceptance window and any provider-specific feature has a documented fallback.

How do I preserve prompts and structured outputs?

Keep prompt templates and business instructions in application-owned files or code, then render them into each connector’s message format. Avoid embedding provider-specific role names, content-part objects, or schema wrappers in templates.

For structured output, define one canonical application schema and validate the parsed result locally. A provider may offer native JSON or schema-constrained generation, but the request syntax and guarantees differ. Use native constraints where supported, then retain local validation and a clear repair or retry policy. Treat a syntactically valid JSON document that fails your schema as an application error, not a successful completion.

Record the model, prompt-template version, schema version, and connector version with each result. This makes a behavior change diagnosable when a provider updates a model or API.

How should tool calling and agents be migrated?

Model tool calling as a protocol rather than as provider-specific message objects. Your application should own the tool registry, authorization, execution, timeout, idempotency, and result storage.

Normalize declarations and calls

Define each tool with a stable name, description, input schema, and execution policy. The connector translates that definition into the provider’s tool format. Normalize returned calls into an internal object containing call ID, tool name, parsed arguments, and the raw argument text for diagnostics. Validate arguments before execution and reject unknown tools.

Protect the execution loop

Do not assume every provider emits a complete call in one response. Streaming connectors may deliver name and argument fragments that must be assembled before validation. Enforce maximum argument size, execution timeout, retry and idempotency rules, and a limit on tool turns. Return tool results through the connector’s expected message shape, then continue the loop only when the model requests another turn.

Adapters can hide differences in agent orchestration, but the OpenAI Agents SDK documentation describes its Any-LLM and LiteLLM integrations as best-effort beta. Validate the exact backend for tool calling, handoffs, streaming, and other features your agent relies on.

How do I keep streaming behavior consistent?

Define an internal event protocol instead of passing provider events directly to the user interface. Useful event types include text_delta, tool_call_delta, tool_call_complete, usage, completed, and error.

  • Buffer fragmented tool names and arguments until they form a complete call.
  • Preserve event order and associate events with a request and choice index when the provider can return more than one choice.
  • Decide whether usage is available only at completion or during the stream, and expose its availability explicitly.
  • Handle a dropped connection by marking the result incomplete; do not convert partial text into a successful completion unless your product deliberately supports that state.
  • Make cancellation propagate to the provider request and to any tool execution already started.

Test streams as event traces, not just as final concatenated text. Two connectors can produce the same final sentence while differing in tool-call timing or cancellation behavior.

How should usage, errors, authentication, and history be handled?

Usage reporting

Create a normalized usage record with input tokens, output tokens, cached or reasoning tokens when supplied, request ID, model, connector, and timestamps. Keep optional provider fields in metadata. If a provider does not return a particular value, represent that as an absent field in your internal type and ensure billing logic does not treat it as zero without qualification.

Error handling

Translate upstream failures into stable categories while retaining status, provider code, retry-after, request ID, and a redacted message. Retry only errors classified as transient and only when the operation is safe to repeat. A tool-using or state-changing workflow may require idempotency keys or application-level deduplication before retries.

Authentication

Keep credentials in the connector or gateway layer. Use separate secrets and rotation policies per provider, avoid logging authorization headers, and test expired, missing, and unauthorized credentials. If a gateway terminates authentication, document whether downstream provider identity is preserved for audit and quota purposes.

Conversation history

Prefer application-owned history when portability matters. Store normalized messages and attachments with your own conversation identifier, then translate the history for each request. Provider-managed threads can reduce application code but create migration work if identifiers, retention rules, or message formats cannot be exported. If you use provider state, define an export, expiration, and fallback plan.

What are the limits of OpenAI-compatible APIs?

An OpenAI-compatible endpoint is a useful transport and schema shortcut only for the workflow it documents. Verify supported operations, content types, tool calls, structured output, streaming events, usage fields, authentication, limits, and error behavior for the exact endpoint and model.

Google’s integration guidance presents compatibility as a trade-off: an aggregator using familiar SDKs can optimize legacy portability for text-based workflows, while direct API integration provides broader native access at the cost of more implementation. Hugging Face documents its compatible endpoint specifically for chat completions and directs other tasks to inference clients. These examples illustrate why a successful chat-completions call does not prove support for files, images, audio, video, embeddings, batch jobs, or provider-native agent features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use compatibility mode for the covered path and route unsupported operations through a native connector. Keep that routing decision explicit in capability checks or configuration, rather than allowing an unsupported request to fail deep inside a generic client.

When does a gateway make sense?

A gateway is useful when multiple applications need centralized provider selection, credential handling, policy enforcement, rate limiting, observability, or failover. Azure API Management documents both compatible APIs and passthrough APIs for non-compatible endpoints, illustrating that a gateway can expose a shared surface without forcing every backend into one schema.

It also adds a service boundary. Confirm how the gateway translates requests, preserves stream events, exposes usage and request IDs, handles retries, redacts data, and reports provider errors. A gateway cannot create a capability that the backend does not support, and its own release or outage becomes part of your dependency chain.

How should I test a provider migration?

Use a fixture suite that reflects production behavior, not a handful of easy prompts. Run each fixture against the actual provider, model, endpoint, region, SDK or adapter version, and configuration you plan to deploy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Functional checks

  • Plain text and long-context prompts, including system and developer instructions.
  • Schema-constrained outputs with valid, missing, extra, and incorrectly typed fields.
  • Single and multiple tool calls, malformed arguments, tool errors, and repeated calls.
  • Streaming text, streamed tool arguments, cancellation, reconnect or timeout handling, and terminal events.
  • Conversation continuation after process restart, if history is application-owned or provider-managed.
  • Images, audio, video, files, or other modalities that your product actually accepts.
  • Authentication failures, invalid parameters, rate limits, policy refusals, upstream timeouts, and provider outages.

Comparison criteria

Compare invariant behavior rather than demanding identical wording. Check schema validity, required business facts, tool-call correctness, event ordering, error category, usage record completeness, latency distribution, and safety outcomes. If text quality or cost matters, measure it with a workload-specific evaluation; the available documentation does not provide a universal benchmark or winner.

What commonly breaks during migration, and how do I fix it?

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Requests succeed but a required field is absent The compatibility surface omits a native response field or the parser assumes one provider’s shape. Check the endpoint’s documented feature scope, make the field optional in the normalized type, or use a native connector for that workflow.
Tool execution never starts Tool-call fragments were treated as complete messages, or tool declarations were translated incorrectly. Assemble stream fragments, validate the normalized call, and compare the serialized declaration with the provider’s native format.
Usage totals differ or appear as zero Usage is emitted at a different stream stage or uses different token categories. Capture usage events and completion metadata separately; preserve provider-specific fields and document accounting assumptions.
Conversation context disappears The old provider owned thread state or the new connector did not translate history. Move history into an application-owned store or implement an explicit state adapter with expiration and export behavior.
Retries duplicate an action A timeout occurred after the provider or a tool had already executed the request. Use idempotency keys where supported, deduplicate tool operations, and retry only operations with a defined repeat-safety policy.
A previously valid integration starts failing API, SDK, model, deployment, or lifecycle changes altered defaults. Pin and monitor versions, verify model availability, and review provider lifecycle notices before rollout.

How do I manage provider API changes after migration?

Treat lifecycle checks as part of normal operations. Verify API versions, SDK versions, model availability, authentication requirements, deployment constraints, and regional support before each rollout. Keep a connector changelog and contract tests in continuous integration.

Google’s Gemini API documentation provides a current example of why this matters: it says the Interactions API became the default interface in June 2026 and marks generateContent as legacy. A provider can change its preferred interface without your application changing its product requirements, so monitor deprecation notices and keep lifecycle-specific code inside the connector.

For every provider, maintain an upgrade checklist: read release notes, run the fixture suite, compare normalized events and usage, test rollback, and confirm that the selected model and endpoint exist in the deployment region. Do not infer stability from a familiar SDK name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I decide whether to stay compatible or go native?

Stay on a compatibility path when it covers the complete workflow you need, your tests show equivalent behavior, and the reduction in integration work outweighs the loss of native controls. Move a specific operation to a native connector when the compatibility layer lacks a required modality, tool behavior, schema guarantee, usage field, or lifecycle feature.

A hybrid design is often the practical result: one common interface for portable chat and structured tasks, plus explicit native operations for capabilities that have no reliable cross-provider mapping. Keep both behind the same application-owned boundary so business logic does not spread provider checks throughout the codebase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one API key for multiple LLM providers?

Usually no. Credentials, scopes, quotas, and rotation rules belong to each provider or to a gateway that manages those credentials. Keep provider secrets separate and verify whether a gateway preserves downstream identity for auditing and billing.

Should conversation history live in my database or with the model provider?

Application-owned history is generally easier to export and translate during a provider change. Provider-managed threads can simplify state handling, but you must verify retention, identifier portability, expiration, and a recovery path before depending on them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I compare model outputs without requiring identical wording?

Evaluate properties that matter to the application: schema validity, required facts, tool-call correctness, stream event order, error classification, usage records, and safety outcomes. Use representative fixtures and workload-specific measurements instead of exact string equality.

Is an API gateway enough to make providers interchangeable?

No. A gateway can centralize routing, credentials, policy, and translation, but it cannot add unsupported backend capabilities. Confirm its handling of native features, streams, usage, errors, data retention, and failover for each provider path.
