You cannot generally pause a running GPU container in one cloud and resume its live CUDA context, device memory, kernels, and allocations in another cloud. A defensible “zero-downtime” migration is instead a workload-specific replacement: run a compatible copy at the destination, prove that it is ready, move service traffic in a controlled way, and keep a tested rollback. For long-running training, application-level checkpoints let a new job resume with bounded lost progress; they do not preserve the live GPU process.

Whether users experience no interruption is therefore a service-level objective to validate for a particular provider pair, model, serving stack, and traffic pattern. Inference and training need different migration designs, and neither is covered by a universal cross-provider guarantee.

Can you move a running GPU workload directly between cloud providers?

In most practical Kubernetes and container deployments, no. A GPU process owns a device context, device memory, kernel state, and CUDA allocations that ordinary container live-migration mechanisms cannot serialize and recreate on a different provider. Cast AI’s container live-migration eligibility documentation explicitly excludes GPU workloads for those reasons and points operators toward normal node draining, restart, and application-level checkpointing.

That statement is about a specific container migration mechanism, not every possible hardware or hypervisor feature. NVIDIA’s vGPU documentation describes a narrower capability: “Live migration enables the transfer of VMs configured with NVIDIA vGPUs from one physical host to another without downtime.” The documented scope is a VM moving between physical hosts under the supported vGPU setup, not an arbitrary Kubernetes GPU process moving between unrelated cloud providers. Read the full NVIDIA AI Enterprise vGPU feature documentation before treating VM migration as relevant to your platform.

What does “without downtime” mean for a GPU migration?

Define the outcome in service terms before choosing a technical method. For an inference API, it might mean no failed requests during a provider handoff, or an allowed error budget such as a small number of retries while latency remains below your SLO. For training, it usually means no unrecoverable job loss and a known maximum of lost steps or elapsed time.

Write the measurable contract for the source and destination pair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Maximum failed or retried inference requests during cutover.
  • Maximum additional p95 or p99 latency and time-to-first-token.
  • Required throughput and concurrency at normal and peak load.
  • Maximum training progress that may be lost if a node fails.
  • Rollback trigger, observation period, and the person authorized to invoke rollback.

A provider can satisfy these targets for one model and fail them for another because startup time, weight size, cache behavior, interconnect, and quota differ. Call the result “zero downtime” only after a production-like test demonstrates the stated SLO.

How do you migrate an inference service without interrupting users?

Inference migration is a replacement-and-cutover exercise. Keep the old service serving while a separately named deployment at the destination loads the same model revision, passes health checks, and survives representative load.

1. Inventory the running service

Record the exact model artifact and revision, tokenizer, serving backend, container digest, framework versions, CUDA and driver requirements, GPU type and memory use, CPU architecture, environment variables, secrets, data stores, network policies, and health endpoints. Capture whether the service depends on a local model cache, a shared filesystem, an object-store download, or a sidecar that is not present in the target provider.

2. Build the destination deployment

Provision compatible GPU capacity and recreate the image, runtime, service account, network access, persistent volumes, and object-storage permissions. Keep the destination deployment under a different name or routing identity so that it can be tested independently. The NVIDIA inference reference architecture treats provider handoff as a design involving Kubernetes APIs, quotas, GPU and network resources, topology, storage, health signals, and lifecycle events rather than a single DNS switch.

3. Measure readiness, not just pod status

A running pod can still be downloading weights, compiling kernels, warming a tokenizer, or rebuilding a key-value cache. Test artifact discovery and download, weight loading, backend initialization, readiness transition, first token or first response, steady-state latency, output throughput, concurrency, error rate, and restart recovery. Record the model revision, backend, GPU model, software versions, and cache state with every result.

4. Exercise the routing path

Send synthetic or shadow requests through the same gateway, authentication layer, rate limits, and observability path used in production. Verify streaming behavior, request timeouts, idempotency, cancellation, and connection draining. Do not infer that a healthy direct endpoint proves the production route is healthy.

5. Shift traffic gradually

Use the routing controls available to your application and provider: a weighted gateway, service mesh, load balancer, or another controlled mechanism. Start with a small canary or a limited tenant set, watch the agreed thresholds, and increase the destination share only when they hold. Keep the source deployment able to accept traffic throughout the observation window.

6. Roll back on a predefined signal

Immediately restore the previous route if error rate, tail latency, first-token time, throughput, output validity, or saturation breaches its threshold. Preserve logs and metrics from both sides so that a rollback is diagnosable rather than a guess. Retire the old service only after the observation period and data-integrity checks are complete.

How do you move a long-running training job between providers?

Training migration relies on application-level checkpoints. The destination starts a new process, restores a verified checkpoint and its dependencies, and resumes from a known step; the original CUDA process is not transferred.

1. Make checkpoints portable and consistent

Write model weights, optimizer state, scheduler state, random-number-generator state, global step, data-shard position, and configuration needed for an exact or intentionally approximate resume. Use a format and framework version that the destination can read. A checkpoint that contains only weights may restart training but cannot reproduce optimizer momentum or the precise data position.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

2. Store checkpoints where both providers can read them

Use an object store or replicated filesystem with documented credentials, encryption, retention, and consistency behavior. Test listing, ranged reads, parallel downloads, and integrity verification from the destination region. Include the checkpoint manifest, checksums, code revision, container digest, and dependency lockfile so that a path alone is not mistaken for a reproducible recovery point.

3. Provision equivalent distributed capacity

Match GPU memory, GPU count, CPU architecture, interconnect, collective-communication libraries, and topology. A job configured for tightly coupled multi-GPU training may resume functionally on a different topology but run much more slowly or fail at initialization. Verify NCCL or other communication settings, pod placement, network policies, and quota before launching the resume attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restore data and secrets

Confirm that training shards, feature stores, tokenizers, licenses, credentials, and encryption keys are available under the destination’s identity. Check region and egress constraints before copying terabytes of data. A successful checkpoint download does not prove that the next training batch can be read.

5. Resume and compare progress

Launch from a staging copy of the checkpoint, verify the restored step and optimizer state, and compare loss, learning-rate schedule, sample ordering, and throughput with the source run. Keep the source job or its last stable checkpoint until the destination has produced a verified continuation. Set the checkpoint interval to bound recoverable work; shorter intervals reduce loss but increase write traffic and storage cost.

What should you record before selecting a destination provider?

A migration plan is only as good as its inventory. Capture values from the actual workload rather than relying on a provider’s generic compatibility label.

Area Record from the source Why it affects migration
Model and code Artifact URI, revision, tokenizer, serving or training code, container digest Prevents a technically healthy target from running the wrong bytes or code.
Accelerator GPU model, count, memory use, MIG or partitioning, required features Determines whether weights fit and whether kernels or precision modes are supported.
Software stack CPU architecture, driver, CUDA, framework, communication libraries, Python and system packages Small ABI or driver differences can prevent startup or change performance.
Distributed topology GPU interconnect, node layout, placement rules, collective settings Cross-node communication can dominate training and multi-GPU inference.
State and data Model cache, checkpoints, datasets, feature stores, volumes, database endpoints Defines what must be copied, mounted, replicated, or re-created.
Operations Readiness and liveness checks, autoscaling, quotas, maintenance signals, alerts, runbooks Determines whether the replacement can be operated and rolled back safely.
Security and network Secrets, identity bindings, firewall rules, private endpoints, DNS, TLS, egress policy Traffic and data access often fail even when the container itself starts.

How should you validate the destination before cutover?

Run tests that resemble production, then retain the measurements as a source-to-target comparison. “Pod ready” is a gate, not an acceptance test.

Test What to measure Evidence to retain
Capacity and placement GPU memory headroom, CPU and RAM saturation, quota, startup time, node placement GPU model, count, topology, timestamps, and scheduler events
Artifact path Download time, checksum verification, cache hit and miss behavior, weight-loading time Artifact revision, cache state, object-store location, and logs
Serving readiness Container start, backend initialization, readiness transition, first token or first request Per-stage durations and software versions
Steady-state load Latency percentiles, throughput, concurrency, queue depth, error rate, output correctness Workload mix, prompt or input sizes, duration, and GPU utilization
Recovery Restart time, cache rebuild, failed-node behavior, checkpoint restore, readiness after disruption Failure injection, recovery timeline, and data-integrity result
Network and storage Throughput, tail latency, connection limits, volume semantics, object-store consistency Region, test size, client settings, and observed limits

For inference, include long-context and streaming cases if those are normal workloads. For training, run enough steps to expose communication and data-loader behavior; a short single-GPU smoke test cannot validate a distributed resume.

Which provider capabilities should you compare?

No neutral, universal compatibility matrix establishes that one provider can accept every workload from another. Compare the concrete offerings and verify them with your tests.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
GPU supply Is the required accelerator available in the needed region, quantity, memory size, and quota window? What happens during capacity or maintenance events?
Runtime compatibility Can the provider run the required driver, CUDA, framework, container base image, precision mode, and communication libraries?
Kubernetes and serving Are the required API versions, GPU scheduling, autoscaling, ingress, service mesh, streaming, and health checks supported?
Interconnect and topology What GPU-to-GPU and node-to-node bandwidth and placement guarantees are available for the training or inference shape?
Storage Can object storage, persistent volumes, snapshots, and caches provide the required throughput, consistency, encryption, and retention?
Data locality and network Where will data live, what private connectivity exists, and what egress or cross-region transfer charges and limits apply?
Operations How are quota increases, health signals, maintenance notices, incident updates, and rollback actions exposed?
Measured behavior What are observed model-load time, first-token latency, throughput, cache warmup, restart recovery, and checkpoint-restore time under your workload?

Does Kubernetes or an orchestration layer make workloads portable?

It can standardize deployment descriptions and operational controls, but it does not make live GPU state portable. NVIDIA Run:ai describes its platform as an open-source Kubernetes orchestration layer intended to provide a consistent way to run workloads across cloud and hybrid environments; that is a portability and scheduling goal, not proof of stateful cross-provider migration. See the Run:ai self-hosted documentation for the supported platform scope.

Managed Kubernetes documentation can help you reproduce the surrounding infrastructure. Google Cloud’s GKE AI/ML orchestration guide covers accelerators, framework integration, multi-tier checkpointing, GPU training, and inference resources. Those capabilities still need to be matched against the destination’s versions, topology, storage, and quotas.

Products that aggregate cloud and on-premises GPUs can simplify placement, but treat capability statements as hypotheses to test. For example, exalsius documentation describes combining GPU infrastructure from cloud providers and on-premises machines. Flexium.AI documentation describes GPU-level PyTorch training migration; its interruption claims are vendor statements, not a general guarantee for every framework or provider pair.

What is the safest cutover and rollback runbook?

Write the runbook before migration day and rehearse it with the same identities, routes, checkpoints, and alerting used in production.

  1. Freeze the change set. Record source and target image digests, model or checkpoint revisions, configuration, routes, secrets, and acceptance thresholds.
  2. Verify target readiness. Confirm capacity, quotas, health signals, storage access, network paths, and representative test results.
  3. Declare ownership. Name the migration operator, observer, incident contact, and rollback authority. Define the observation window.
  4. Start the replacement. For inference, keep it isolated from production traffic until readiness and load checks pass. For training, launch from a checksum-verified checkpoint.
  5. Shift in controlled increments. Use the available routing mechanism and monitor errors, latency, throughput, cache state, and saturation after each increment.
  6. Execute rollback when a trigger fires. Restore the source route or stop the resumed training job, preserving the last known-good checkpoint and all telemetry.
  7. Retire only after acceptance. Keep source credentials, data paths, and operational access until the observation window closes and the destination has passed recovery checks.

NVIDIA’s Run:ai legacy-workload migration guide illustrates the verify-before-retire pattern: create a replacement under another name, verify it, then stop the legacy workload. That procedure is for its product-upgrade scenario, not a provider-neutral migration recipe; see the documented workflow for its exact scope.

What commonly breaks, and how do you recover?

  • The target pod starts but never becomes ready. Check driver and CUDA compatibility, missing model permissions, cache downloads, kernel compilation, and readiness thresholds. Capture per-stage startup timing instead of repeatedly restarting.
  • Weights fit on the source GPU but not the target. Compare usable memory, partitioning, precision, and allocator behavior. Choose a larger-memory accelerator or an explicitly supported quantization and sharding plan.
  • Inference is ready but slower. Check GPU generation, clocking, backend build, interconnect, CPU bottlenecks, batch settings, cache warmth, and request mix. Compare identical model revisions and software versions before changing the model.
  • Traffic cutover causes errors. Verify gateway routes, TLS, authentication, streaming upgrades, connection draining, timeouts, and rate limits. Keep the source route available and lower the destination weight.
  • Training resumes with inconsistent results. Validate checkpoint completeness, optimizer and scheduler state, random seeds, data-shard position, code revision, and mixed-precision settings. Resume from the previous verified checkpoint rather than an unverified partial upload.
  • The destination cannot read data. Recheck identity bindings, bucket or volume policy, private networking, region restrictions, and encryption-key access. Test reads as the actual workload identity.
  • Capacity disappears during migration. Confirm quota and reservation behavior before cutover, and define a fallback region or provider only if its data and runtime dependencies are also ready.

How do cost, locality, and operational risk change the decision?

A second provider can reduce capacity risk but add object-storage replication, egress, duplicated warm capacity, observability, and on-call complexity. Large model artifacts and frequent checkpoints make transfer bandwidth and storage semantics material design constraints, not accounting details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep data and compute in compatible regions when policy permits, and document any cross-border or cross-region movement. Compare recurring GPU cost with the cost of maintaining a warm standby, the time needed to rebuild caches, and the business impact of a failed cutover. A cheaper accelerator that takes much longer to load or resume may violate the same SLO that motivated the migration.

What is a practical acceptance checklist?

  • The SLO states allowed errors, latency, throughput, and training-progress loss.
  • Source and target inventories include model, image, accelerator, runtime, topology, data, secrets, routes, quotas, and health checks.
  • The destination has passed model-load, cache, readiness, first-request or first-token, steady-load, and restart tests.
  • Training checkpoints have been restored and verified from the destination identity.
  • Routing, observation, rollback triggers, and named operators are written and rehearsed.
  • Source service or source checkpoint remains available through the full acceptance window.
  • Measured results, versions, cache state, and provider health events are retained for the migration record.

With those controls, “without downtime” becomes a testable property of a specific workload and provider pair. Without them, it is only an assumption that a GPU deployment descriptor is portable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Kubernetes pod with a GPU be live-migrated like a CPU-only pod?

Usually not through standard container live-migration mechanisms, because the GPU context and device allocations are not captured with ordinary pod state. Plan for a replacement, restart, or application checkpoint unless your exact hypervisor and GPU stack documents a supported alternative.

How often should a training job write checkpoints?

Choose an interval from the maximum progress loss your team can accept and the measured cost of writing a checkpoint. Test the interval with real checkpoint size and storage throughput; a very short interval can consume meaningful network, storage, and training time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is changing DNS enough to achieve a zero-downtime inference cutover?

DNS propagation, resolver caching, existing connections, and health-aware draining can make a DNS-only switch unpredictable. A gateway or service-routing method that supports controlled weights, connection draining, and rapid rollback is easier to validate, but the correct mechanism depends on your application and provider pair.

What if the destination offers a different GPU model?

Re-run compatibility and performance tests with the exact model, precision, backend, and request mix. Confirm memory headroom, kernel support, interconnect behavior, first-token time, throughput, and output correctness before treating the accelerator as an equivalent replacement.

Can I keep two providers active permanently?

Yes, an active-active or warm-standby design can reduce dependence on a single provider, but it requires synchronized model artifacts, data and secrets, routing policy, observability, quota planning, and regular failover drills. The second environment is only useful if it is kept sufficiently current to pass the same acceptance tests.
