To find out whether AI saves your marketing team time, compare defined, repeatable tasks against a pre-AI baseline and count all the work required to produce an approved result—not just the minutes spent generating a draft. Track active production time, elapsed cycle time, review, rework and coordination alongside output and quality. The answer will usually differ by task and worker, so report results by those groups and by actual AI use rather than relying on one team-wide average or employees’ estimates of hours saved.

Does AI really save marketers time?

Sometimes—but access to an AI tool, faster first drafts and genuine net time savings are different things. A sound measurement compares equivalent work with and without AI, then includes the time spent checking, editing, approving and coordinating the result. It also checks whether the faster work is accurate and useful enough to ship.

Self-reported hours can help explain how workers feel about AI, but they are weak evidence of how much time a workflow actually saves. People may estimate differently, remember unusually easy or difficult assignments, or count drafting while forgetting review. Use task records and an explicit comparison design for the main result; present survey perceptions separately.

Published findings illustrate why the question needs a qualified answer rather than a universal number:

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • A 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research field experiment covered 7,137 knowledge workers at 66 firms. In the second half of the six-month experiment, users spent two fewer hours per week on email; individual-level access did not significantly shift task quantity or composition.
  • In a 2025 Microsoft Research cross-industry field experiment, frequent users spent three fewer hours—or 25% less time—on email per week. Meeting time did not significantly change, while documents were completed moderately faster.
  • A 2023 NBER study of 5,179 customer-support agents measured issues resolved per hour, not marketing output. Productivity rose 14% on average and 34% for novice and low-skilled workers, with minimal impact for experienced, highly skilled workers. It is evidence that effects can vary by experience, not a forecast for a marketing team.
  • In a 2024 Microsoft and LinkedIn Copilot study, users read 11% fewer emails, spent 4% less time interacting with email and edited 10% more documents. The highest-impact companies reported 25%–45% less email reading and 20% more document editing. Those activity measures do not, on their own, establish that every additional edited document was approved or valuable.
  • LinkedIn and Ipsos reported in 2025 that B2B marketers said they saved about four hours a week in each of five task areas—up to 20 hours across areas. This was self-reported survey data, and the number of respondents differed by task base; it should not be treated as an observed, universal saving for an individual marketer.

These results are not directly interchangeable: they concern different work, populations, measures and study designs. They show why your own answer should identify which tasks were measured, how AI was used, what changed in quality and what work moved elsewhere.

What should count as a time saving?

Count the whole path from a task entering the workflow to a usable, approved result, and keep the components separate. A quick generation step is not necessarily a quick completed task.

Active time and elapsed time

Active time is the time people spend working: for example, researching a brief, prompting, editing or reviewing. Elapsed cycle time is the time from the task’s start to its completion, including waiting for a handoff, approval or response. A team can reduce active drafting time without shortening the cycle if the work then sits in a review queue. Conversely, elapsed time can fall because work moves through the queue faster even if the person’s active effort changes little. Record both; they answer different operational questions.

Gross and net time

Gross time saved on production leaves out the extra work AI can create. For net time, compare baseline task minutes with all AI-path minutes:

Net minutes saved = baseline minutes − (AI production minutes + review + rework + coordination)

Use the same task boundary on both sides of the calculation. If the baseline includes approval but the AI workflow stops when a draft is generated, the comparison overstates the saving. Include meetings, handoffs, waiting and escalations where they are part of the workflow; where waiting does not represent active labor, report its effect on cycle time separately rather than counting it as labor minutes.

Output and usable output

Count completed work, but distinguish raw volume from work that meets the team’s bar. Ten generated variants are not automatically ten useful variants. Pair output counts with approval rate, quality scores and corrections, so that a rise in production is not mistaken for a rise in usable output.

How should we run an AI time-savings pilot?

Start with a narrow set of repeatable tasks, measure the existing process, and compare it with AI-assisted work using a defensible control or matching method. A pilot is only informative if both groups are doing comparable work and the team records the time and quality costs through approval.

  1. Choose repeatable tasks and define the unit. Select work that occurs often enough to observe, such as research briefs, first drafts, campaign reports, audience-summary memos, SEO outlines or variant generation. Define what one unit means in observable terms—for example, one approved 800-word brief—not simply “content.” Specify where the task begins and ends, and what qualifies as complete.
  2. Capture a pre-AI baseline. Log at least two weeks of comparable pre-AI work. For each task, record active minutes, elapsed hours, waiting time, output count, reviewer time, revision rounds and a quality score. Keep task characteristics that affect effort, such as channel, complexity, owner and deadline, so the comparison can account for differences.
  3. Choose a comparison design. When practical, randomly assign AI access for eligible tasks or workers. Random assignment helps reduce the risk that the AI group simply got easier assignments or had more experienced owners. If randomization is not feasible, match AI and non-AI tasks by channel, complexity, owner and deadline, or use a within-worker pre/post comparison. State which design you used: a pre/post result is informative, but it cannot rule out every other change that happened over time.
  4. Record AI exposure and use. For each measured task, log whether AI was available, which tool or feature was used, approximate use intensity and whether a human edited the output. Availability is not evidence of use; usage is not evidence that AI produced the final work. Record non-use and partial use rather than classifying every task from an AI-enabled team as AI-assisted.
  5. Score quality with a consistent rubric. Where possible, have reviewers score work without knowing whether it used AI. Apply the same rubric to both conditions and assess factual accuracy, brand or compliance fit, originality, usefulness and approval rate. Record revision rounds, rework and downstream corrections as separate observations, not just an overall impression of quality.
  6. Include the surrounding work. Measure reviewer effort, meetings, handoffs, waiting and escalations. Note who performed the work and whether a task shifted to a different role. A shorter first-draft step can coexist with more time spent by editors or subject-matter experts.
  7. Calculate net time and value. Apply the net-minutes formula to each task before summarizing results. Convert time into labor cost only with the team’s loaded labor rate, and report a range rather than implying that one average applies to every task. Time returned to the team is not automatically cash saved: it may instead create capacity for other work.
  8. Segment and follow up. Break out results by task type, channel, complexity, experience and low versus high AI usage. Re-measure after four to eight weeks to check for learning effects, quality drift or changed work allocation. Keep the follow-up as a distinct period so an early adjustment phase is not silently combined with later performance.

How do we make the comparison fair?

The goal is to compare like with like and disclose what the design can establish. No single setup removes every source of variation, but a clear comparison is much more useful than a before-and-after estimate with no account of task mix.

Prefer random assignment when it is workable

Randomly assigning AI access to eligible work or workers can make the groups more comparable on average. Preserve the assignment record even when some assigned users do not use the tool: that lets you report the effect of offering access separately from outcomes among people who actually used it. Do not quietly move difficult tasks into one group or exclude slow, unsuccessful AI attempts after seeing the results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match tasks when you cannot randomize

For matched tasks, compare assignments with similar channel, complexity, owner and deadline. Add other factors that matter in your workflow if you can record them consistently. Document the matching rules before reviewing the outcome, and say where the groups still differ. A within-worker comparison can reduce differences between people, but the worker may gain experience or face different work in the later period; record those limits instead of claiming that timing alone proves causation.

Separate access from actual use

Measure at least three states: no AI access, access offered and AI used on the task. A team-wide license or availability setting cannot establish that AI helped with a specific deliverable. Actual usage intensity matters too: occasional assistance and a workflow built around AI are not the same exposure. Keep records of human editing so the result reflects the combined workflow rather than attributing all final work to generation.

Which measures should we report together?

Report time beside the quality and workflow measures needed to interpret it. A compact scorecard can show whether a change was fast, usable and sustainable without collapsing distinct outcomes into a misleading productivity figure.

Measure What it tells you What to watch
Active production time How much hands-on time went into making the work. It excludes review and waiting unless you add them.
Total cycle time How long the task took from start to completion. Waiting and queue delays affect it even when no one is actively working.
Output count How many deliverables or variants were completed. Volume alone does not establish approval or usefulness.
Approval rate and quality score How much work met the agreed standard. Use the same rubric and review process across conditions; blind review where possible.
Review, rework and corrections How much downstream effort the output created. Track revision rounds and corrections, not just time to initial draft.
Coordination time Whether handoffs, meetings or escalations offset individual savings. Include the people and workflow stages affected, not only the original task owner.
AI exposure and intensity Whether AI was available and how much it was used on measured work. Access alone is not use; identify human edits.

For each metric, show the comparison period and task base, along with how tasks were assigned or matched. Report segment results when effects differ materially; an overall average can conceal gains for one task or experience group and little change for another. If you have enough observations to estimate uncertainty, include confidence intervals. Keep survey-reported perceptions distinct from task telemetry and observed performance.

How many hours does AI save in marketing?

There is no defensible single number for all marketing work. The available findings range from measured changes in email and document activity to self-reported estimates across B2B marketing tasks, and those are different kinds of evidence.

LinkedIn and Ipsos’ 2025 survey found B2B marketers reported about four hours saved per week in each of five task areas, up to 20 hours across areas. Because task bases varied and the figure is self-reported, it is best read as a reported perception across task categories—not as an experimentally verified weekly saving for every marketer or a guarantee that the hours can be added together for a particular person.

The 2025 NBER and Microsoft Research field experiments offer different, observed measures: two fewer weekly email hours among users in the second half of the NBER study, and three fewer email hours (25% less) among frequent users in the Microsoft Research experiment. Those findings concern email among knowledge workers, not a direct measurement of net marketing-task savings. Microsoft Research also found no significant change in meeting time and moderately faster document completion, a reminder that one improved activity does not establish a whole-workflow result.

Earlier indicators need the same care. An NBER analysis reported firm AI-use estimates rising from 3.7% in September 2023 to 5.4% in February 2024, with about 6.6% expected by early fall 2024. Those figures describe estimated firm AI use, not hours saved. Microsoft’s 2023 early-user report combined measures: 29% faster performance across searching, writing and summarizing tasks, plus 71% of respondents saying AI saved time on mundane tasks. An experiment-based task result and a survey perception answer different questions and should not be merged into one time-saving claim.

Is faster content production actually better?

Only if the faster process still produces work that is accurate, appropriate and useful. A draft that arrives sooner but needs more fact-checking, brand edits or correction can shift rather than remove work.

Use the same quality rubric for AI-assisted and non-AI work. Score factual accuracy, brand or compliance fit, originality, usefulness and approval; also record revision rounds and downstream corrections. Blind scoring where possible reduces the chance that reviewers’ expectations about AI influence their ratings. Interpret time and quality together: if output rises while approval falls or rework increases, raw production speed is not a reliable measure of improvement.

Keep quantity distinct from quality. Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Copilot study found 10% more documents edited, but editing volume alone does not say how many were approved or how useful they were. Similarly, a team that generates more variants has increased output, but only quality and approval measures can show whether those variants are usable for the intended work.

Why might results differ across tasks and people?

AI’s effect depends on what the work requires and who is doing it. Treat a team’s result as a set of task- and worker-specific outcomes, not a property of the tool that will hold for every marketer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Task type and workflow

Research briefs, first drafts, campaign reporting, audience summaries, SEO outlines and variant generation are useful pilot candidates because they can be defined as repeatable units. They still differ in source material, approval path and risk. A task with substantial review or handoffs may show a smaller net benefit than its generation time suggests. Record the workflow stages rather than assuming that an improvement in one stage transfers to another.

Experience and skill

The NBER’s 2023 customer-support study found a 34% productivity increase for novice and low-skilled workers but minimal impact for experienced, highly skilled workers. Because the study measured customer-support issues resolved per hour, not marketing tasks, use it as a reason to segment your pilot—not as a predicted percentage for marketers. Report novice, intermediate and experienced users separately when the sample supports it.

Use intensity and learning

Workers may use AI in different ways, and early results may not match later performance. Record approximate usage intensity and remeasure after four to eight weeks. That follow-up can show whether workers become more effective with experience, whether quality changes, or whether time is being redirected elsewhere; do not assume improvement or deterioration without measuring it.

Organizational adoption

Access and adoption are not interchangeable. An NBER 2024 estimate put firm AI use at 3.7% in September 2023 and 5.4% in February 2024, with about 6.6% expected by early fall 2024. These are estimates of firm use at those dates, not measures of individual task exposure or productivity. For your pilot, keep the unit of analysis clear: the organization, worker, task and deliverable answer different questions.

How do we turn saved minutes into a business decision?

Convert measured time into cost only when you need a labor-cost estimate, using the team’s loaded labor rate and stating the period and assumptions. Otherwise, report net minutes and usable output directly; that avoids implying that every minute recovered becomes a budget reduction.

Distinguish labor savings from capacity redeployed to higher-value work. If marketers use time returned by AI to do more analysis, improve campaign strategy or serve additional work, the business benefit may be added capacity rather than lower payroll cost. Track what happens to that capacity rather than calling it cash saved by default. Present ranges and segment results where outcomes vary, and disclose the comparison design and task base so decision-makers can judge how transferable the finding is.

Vendor studies can provide useful examples of instrumentation, but their results may not generalize to every marketing stack. The OECD’s 2025 review of Noy and Zhang describes a randomized trial involving 444 university-educated professionals, including marketing-related writing tasks, that compared speed and quality with and without ChatGPT. That setup highlights the value of measuring both dimensions under comparison conditions; it does not replace measuring your own workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a marketing AI time study run?

The recommended baseline is at least two weeks of pre-AI work, followed by a later remeasurement four to eight weeks after the initial period. Those intervals help capture ordinary task variation and possible learning; they do not guarantee a particular sample size or a conclusive result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an employee survey to estimate AI time savings?

Use surveys to capture perceptions and reported experience, but label them as self-reported and keep them separate from time logs and workflow records. A survey can explain why people do or do not use AI, but it cannot by itself verify net task minutes saved.

What if our team cannot randomly assign AI access?

Match AI and non-AI tasks on factors such as channel, complexity, owner and deadline, or compare the same workers before and after adoption. Document how the groups differ and avoid treating a simple pre/post change as proof that AI alone caused the result.

Should we count AI-generated work that never gets approved?

Record it as output, but do not count it as approved, usable output. Its production and review time still belong in the workflow totals, while approval and quality measures show whether the work met the task’s intended standard.
