Measure AI exposure as a set of weighted, dated estimates rather than a single label. Inventory every account, look through ETFs and mutual funds to their issuer holdings, classify each issuer by AI-linked revenue and role in the value chain, then multiply each portfolio weight by a documented AI percentage. Report at least three views: disclosed AI revenue, a broader value-chain measure that includes enablers, and a risk view that includes potential disruption or automation. Add overlap and concentration checks so repeated holdings in several funds are counted once. Because companies disclose AI activity inconsistently, every result should show its definition, evidence grade, geography and holdings date.

What does AI exposure mean in a portfolio?

AI exposure is the share of a portfolio whose economic results or risks are linked to artificial-intelligence spending, products or adoption. A defensible calculation separates three positive-exposure groups and one risk group:

  • Direct providers: companies selling models, AI software, data services or purpose-built hardware.
  • Enablers: suppliers of chips, networking, cloud capacity, data centers, power, cooling and other infrastructure required to run AI.
  • Adopters: companies that may improve revenue or margins by deploying AI in an existing business, even when they do not sell AI as a product.
  • Disruption or automation exposure: businesses whose labor model, pricing power or demand could be changed by AI. This can be economically material even when AI contributes no reported revenue.

A portfolio can therefore have low direct AI revenue but high dependence on the same AI investment cycle through cloud, semiconductor or data-center suppliers. Conversely, a company with a large AI product line may have a small portfolio weight. Your measure must preserve both the issuer-level percentage and the portfolio weight that gives it significance.

Why is there no universal AI-exposure percentage?

There is no accounting standard that requires every company to disclose an “AI revenue” line. Providers use different universes, dates, geographic scopes and definitions of an AI-linked segment. A narrow number based only on disclosed revenue is auditable but misses emerging activity; a broad value-chain or disruption number captures more shared risk but requires more judgment.

MSCI’s AI Exposure Intelligence applies one rules-based classification across competitive impact, activity and revenue. Its named datasets are AI Disruption Potential, AI Activity Monitor and AI Revenue Exposure. MSCI describes the objective as assessing which companies are exposed “across competitive advantage, revenue and risk.” Its AI Value Chain Indexes divide opportunity into physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications, with ten components, and combine realized business-segment revenue with attention to emerging AI activity.

S&P Global’s Visible Alpha AI Monitor covers 69 publicly traded companies. It aggregates selected AI-exposed revenue lines and weights companies by those lines relative to total revenue. S&P explicitly calls the lines proxies: limited disclosure and the overlap between AI and conventional services mean they are not exact quantifications of AI revenue. Morningstar’s combined fund AI Exposure score instead reflects analyst assessments of future AI revenue and how often AI managers hold each stock; it is a provider score, not a standardized accounting measure.

How do I define the measurement before collecting data?

Write a one-sentence definition and an as-of date before opening a spreadsheet. For example: “AI revenue exposure is the portfolio-weighted percentage of issuer revenue disclosed or estimated to come from AI products and services as of 30 June 2026.” Then create separate definitions for value-chain and risk views instead of blending incompatible percentages.

Choose the unit of analysis

  • Issuer: the consolidated company that ultimately earns the revenue.
  • Security: the stock, depositary receipt, preferred share or fund share class you own.
  • Portfolio: all accounts included in the decision, with account-level weights preserved until consolidation.

Use the issuer as the exposure unit. Two share classes of the same company should roll into one issuer, while a fund remains a separate holding until its underlying securities are available.

Set the geography and date

Record the reporting currency, market region and each source’s publication date. A US filing, an EU fund report and an index provider’s global estimate may describe different universes. Holdings are snapshots: preserve the fund’s stated holdings date, not merely the date you downloaded the file.

How do I inventory every account and security?

Start with positions, not ticker symbols copied from a portfolio screen. Export or enter the following fields for every account:

  1. Account identifier and account type.
  2. Security name, ticker, ISIN, CUSIP or another stable identifier.
  3. Quantity, market value and portfolio weight at the same valuation time.
  4. Currency and exchange, where relevant.
  5. Fund name, share class and holdings as-of date for pooled vehicles.
  6. Whether the position is long, short, an option or another derivative.

Calculate each account’s weight as market value divided by the account’s total included assets. Decide in advance whether cash, short positions and derivatives belong in the denominator. Document the rule; changing it between reviews can look like a change in AI exposure when it is only a calculation change.

How do I look through ETFs and mutual funds?

Download the most recent complete holdings file for each fund and map every underlying security to its issuer. Consolidate duplicate issuers across funds and direct holdings before applying an AI percentage. If a fund owns 3% of Issuer A and a separate account owns 2%, the portfolio has a 5% issuer weight, not two independent 3% and 2% exposures.

  1. Match share classes: map common stock, depositary receipts and multiple classes to one economic issuer where appropriate.
  2. Normalize weights: multiply your fund position weight by the fund’s reported holding weight. A 10% portfolio position in a fund whose latest file shows 4% in Issuer A creates a 0.4% look-through portfolio weight.
  3. Capture cash and “other”: retain the fund’s residual categories so the look-through total can be reconciled to the fund position.
  4. Consolidate: sum all look-through weights for each issuer, then compare the total with your portfolio market value.
  5. Flag stale files: keep the holdings date and mark interpolated or incomplete data rather than presenting it as current.

When look-through data are unavailable, retain the fund as a fund-level exposure with a lower evidence grade. Do not assign the fund the AI percentage of its largest holding. If a provider publishes a methodology-based fund score, show that score separately from your issuer calculation.

What issuer information should I record?

Classify each issuer across four dimensions. This prevents a marketing description from being mistaken for revenue and keeps opportunity separate from risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dimension Record Strong evidence Weak evidence
AI-linked revenue Percentage or amount of consolidated revenue tied to AI products or services Reported AI segment, product line or revenue disclosure AI wording in a presentation without a revenue amount
Value-chain layer Physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure or applications; note the specific component Named business segment and documented AI customer use Industry label or ticker theme
AI activity Investment, partnerships, launches, capital spending and acquisitions connected to AI Filing, earnings release or named partnership with dates Generic “AI-enabled” marketing language
Disruption potential How automation could alter costs, demand, labor intensity or competitive position Provider model with stated rules and assumptions Unquantified speculation

Use an evidence grade

A simple three-level grade makes uncertainty visible:

  • A — disclosed: a filing or audited report identifies an AI segment, product line or revenue amount.
  • B — documented link: a named business segment has a clear AI connection, but the company does not separately report AI revenue.
  • C — inferred: activity, marketing language or an external model suggests exposure without a company-level amount.

Store the source title, publication date, page or section, geography and whether the figure is reported or estimated. A modeled percentage should be labeled “estimate” in the same cell as the number.

How do I calculate weighted AI exposure?

For each issuer, multiply its consolidated portfolio weight by the selected AI-exposure percentage:

Issuer contribution (percentage points) = portfolio weight × AI-linked percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then sum issuer contributions. A 4% holding with 60% AI-linked revenue contributes 2.4 percentage points under a revenue-only definition. The arithmetic is simple; the classification choice is the material judgment.

Issuer Consolidated portfolio weight Disclosed or estimated AI revenue Revenue contribution Value-chain percentage Value-chain contribution
Issuer A 4.0% 60% 2.40 points 80% 3.20 points
Issuer B 6.0% 10% 0.60 points 50% 3.00 points
Issuer C 3.0% 0% disclosed; activity grade B 0.00 points 30% estimate 0.90 points
All other issuers 87.0% not classified 0.00 points not classified 0.00 points
Total 100% 3.00 points 7.10 points

In this illustration, 3.0% is not “the” AI exposure; it is the revenue-defined case. The 7.1% figure is a broader value-chain estimate and should not be combined with the first number.

Report direct, enabling and adopter buckets

Sum contributions by role before showing a grand total. An issuer can belong to more than one role, but assign a rule for avoiding double counting—for example, use the issuer’s revenue percentage once in the revenue view, then tag its value-chain role for analysis. For an adopter view, use a separate percentage or a binary flag; never add an adopter percentage to a revenue percentage unless the underlying economic streams are explicitly non-overlapping.

How do I measure overlap and concentration?

List the largest issuer contributions in descending order and show how many funds contain each issuer. A portfolio with 30 AI-themed tickers can still be dominated by three companies that recur across several index funds.

  • Shared-dependency map: tag exposure to cloud, chips, networking, data centers, power and cooling.
  • Fund overlap: compare issuer weights between funds, not just their names or stated themes.
  • Geographic concentration: group issuers by headquarters, listing market and revenue geography where available.

ESMA’s 2025 analysis illustrates why this check matters. It began with 198 constituents across seven AI indices, retained the 83 companies appearing in at least two indices, and examined 10,370 EU equity funds using holdings from January 2021 through June 2024. More than 50% of the market value held by those funds was concentrated in the largest companies, including six of the Magnificent Seven. That finding describes the studied EU-fund universe and period; it is not a forecast for every portfolio.

Which AI-exposure cases should I stress-test?

Produce at least three separate cases so readers can see how assumptions change the result.

Case Include Strength Limitation
Narrow disclosed-revenue Only issuer-reported AI revenue or a clearly named AI segment Easiest to audit and reproduce Misses emerging products and bundled services
Broad value-chain Direct providers plus physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications Captures suppliers benefiting from AI spending Requires modeled percentages and boundary decisions
Risk and disruption Positive exposure plus potential automation, pricing or demand disruption Shows downside dependence that revenue alone misses Not additive to revenue; often qualitative or model-based

Keep the same holdings snapshot across cases. If a provider changes its classification, record the old and new methodology and explain whether the portfolio changed or only the model did.

How do established provider methodologies differ?

Method Coverage and unit How exposure is formed Transparency and caution
MSCI AI Exposure Intelligence Companies across competitive impact, activity, revenue and risk Rules-based classification using AI Disruption Potential, AI Activity Monitor and AI Revenue Exposure Broad coverage; inspect the rules and date before comparing scores
MSCI AI Value Chain Indexes Physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications, divided into ten components Realized segment revenue plus attention to emerging AI activity Useful for layer analysis; not identical to disclosed AI revenue
S&P Global Visible Alpha AI Monitor 69 publicly traded companies Selected AI-exposed revenue lines weighted against total revenue Lines are proxies, not exact AI-revenue quantifications, because disclosures and services are intertwined
Morningstar fund AI Exposure Funds and their manager holdings Analyst view of future AI revenue and frequency of holding each stock Provider score; not a standardized accounting measure
ESMA 2025 cross-index study 83 companies appearing in at least two of seven AI indices; 10,370 EU equity funds Holdings-based market-value analysis from January 2021 to June 2024 Describes EU funds and the stated period, not a universal portfolio score

What should a practical worksheet contain?

Use one row per issuer and separate tabs for raw holdings, fund look-through, issuer evidence and calculations. The issuer tab should include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Issuer identifier and normalized name.
  • Direct, enabling and adopter tags.
  • AI-revenue percentage, value-chain percentage and disruption rating, each with a grade.
  • Reported versus estimated status.
  • Source, publication date, geography and fiscal period.
  • Portfolio weight after consolidation.
  • Contribution columns for each scenario.
  • Notes on stale holdings, residual fund assets or unresolved mapping.

Use formulas rather than manually typing totals, and add a reconciliation row showing that consolidated holdings plus cash or “other” equal the portfolio denominator. Keep a versioned copy each time the assumptions or holdings date changes.

What are the most common errors and how do I fix them?

Problem Why it distorts the result Fix
Adding fund-level scores to issuer revenue percentages They measure different things and may double count the same stock Present provider scores separately; calculate your own look-through total where possible
Counting each fund holding independently Repeated issuers appear larger than their economic weight Consolidate to one issuer before multiplying by exposure
Treating a ticker or marketing phrase as revenue Theme language does not establish an economic amount Assign grade C or leave the revenue field unclassified
Using a stale or interpolated holdings file without a label Fund composition may have changed materially Display the holdings date and uncertainty beside the result
Mixing opportunity and disruption in one total Positive and negative concepts can offset or double count Publish separate revenue, value-chain and risk views
Ignoring currency and share-class mapping Weights and issuer totals no longer reconcile Convert values at one valuation time and map economic issuers consistently

How often should I refresh the measurement?

Refresh after a material trade, fund replacement, merger, major earnings disclosure or provider methodology change. A quarterly review is practical for active portfolios; less frequently traded portfolios can set a semiannual or annual schedule, provided the holdings date is explicit. Re-run the look-through when a fund publishes a new complete file and preserve the prior result so a change in score can be traced to either portfolio activity or revised classifications.

How should I interpret the final number?

Read the headline alongside its definition, date, evidence mix and concentration. “3% disclosed AI revenue” means something different from “7% value-chain exposure” or “a high disruption score.” Check whether the result is driven by one issuer, repeated fund positions or a shared dependency such as cloud capacity or semiconductor manufacturing. The measurement is most useful as a decision aid: it can reveal unintended overlap, identify assumptions that deserve review and show which part of the portfolio would be affected by a change in AI spending or adoption.

FAQ: questions investors ask next

Can I measure AI exposure without buying a specialist dataset?

Yes. Public filings, fund holdings files, earnings materials and a spreadsheet are enough for a transparent first pass. You will have fewer modeled estimates and slower updates than a commercial provider, so label unclassified issuers and preserve the source date rather than filling gaps with guesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I compare an AI score shown on two fund websites?

First identify whether each score is revenue-based, holdings-frequency based, value-chain based or a disruption assessment. Compare only scores with the same definition, date, universe and treatment of indirect suppliers; otherwise show them as different indicators rather than ranking the funds.

Does an international fund create a currency problem?

Currency affects market values and therefore portfolio weights, not the issuer’s underlying AI percentage. Convert all positions to one reporting currency at the same valuation time, retain the original currency for audit, and note when a fund’s published weights use a different close.

What if a company reports an AI segment that includes conventional products?

Use the company’s stated segment only if it explains the AI boundary; otherwise downgrade the evidence or record a range. Describe the figure as a proxy when AI and non-AI services are bundled, following the limitation noted by S&P Global’s Visible Alpha methodology.
