To make a 3D-printed accessory fit a Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Clone Hero, or MIDI guitar controller, identify the exact controller model and revision, measure the surfaces and openings the accessory will touch, and test the design on a small print before printing the full part. Use a caliper for critical features, record measurements in millimetres from a defined reference point, and leave room for every control and service opening the accessory must not obstruct. There is no universal fit tolerance for guitar-controller accessories: treat clearance as a design value to validate against the actual controller.

Why do I need the exact controller model before measuring?

“Guitar controller” covers devices with very different shapes, proportions, and interfaces. A measurement from one model cannot safely stand in for another—even if both controllers look similar or work with the same game. Record the manufacturer, model, revision, and connection type before drawing the accessory, and note whether a detachable neck or headstock is attached.

Published dimensions can help you check an identification or plan the broad size of a design, but they do not describe every surface an accessory may touch. For example, Roland lists its GK-3 controller as 87.0 mm wide × 73.6 mm deep × 22.7 mm high in its GK-3 dimensions page. An NBCP manual reports a wireless PC/PS3 guitar controller as 16.93 × 12.99 × 2.56 inches and 3.03 pounds (NBCP manual). These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable dimensions or a substitute for measuring the particular controller in front of you.

Before measuring, photograph the identification label and the controller from the top, side, and underside. The photos help you keep track of orientation and identify which features belong to a detachable part. They also provide a useful visual reference if you return to the project later or revise the accessory for another controller.

What tools and reference system should I use?

Use a digital caliper for openings, button diameters, shell thicknesses, and other features where a small difference could affect fit. A ruler can help with broad dimensions, but it is not a substitute for caliper readings on close-fitting interfaces. Adafruit’s enclosure tutorial puts the key point plainly: “If your buttons are different than the listed Adafruit buttons, you will need to measure the size of your buttons. Use a caliper and measure the diameter” (Adafruit Learning System tutorial, updated 2024).

Set a consistent coordinate system before recording any dimensions. Use millimetres, choose a flat reference face, and define X as left-to-right, Y as front-to-back, and Z as height. Write down exactly which face or point is your datum—the fixed origin from which you will locate features—and preserve that choice in both your worksheet and CAD file. If a hole center is recorded from one edge on the controller but from another edge in the model, the number alone will not prevent a misplaced hole.

  • Re-zero the caliper if two readings of a critical feature disagree.
  • Take at least two readings of each critical measurement and record them rather than relying on memory.
  • For an opening that must pass over the controller, retain the larger measured diameter among repeated readings.
  • Note whether a caliper jaw reaches the true bottom of a recess or whether the depth is only partially accessible.

Which controller features should I measure?

Measure both the overall envelope and every interface that could determine fit, support, retention, or access. Overall length, width, and maximum height help establish scale; they do not tell you where a clip, screw, or opening belongs. For each feature, capture its size and its position relative to your chosen datum.

Feature group Measurements to record Why it matters to the accessory
Overall shape Length, width, and maximum height; record a detachable neck or headstock separately from the body. Defines the outer envelope and helps distinguish attached from separate parts.
Contact surfaces Location of each intended contact area and minimum and maximum shell thickness there. Shows where the accessory can sit and how much material it must clear or span.
Buttons and moving controls Button and fret dimensions; strum-bar and whammy-bar dimensions; diameters and center-to-center spacing for circular features; full movement or travel envelope. Provides openings and keep-out areas so the accessory does not press a button or restrict a control.
Edges and recesses Depths of recesses, bosses, and lips; note whether the caliper reaches the actual bottom. Helps distinguish a flat surface from a feature that changes the available clearance or seating position.
Fasteners Screw-hole diameter, counterbore or countersink diameter, hole depth, and hole-center coordinates from the datum. Locates mounting points and captures any enlarged or tapered opening around a screw.
Access and hardware Positions and dimensions of connector, cable, battery-cover, power-switch, and strap-hardware openings. Keeps service access and attached hardware usable after the accessory is installed.

For circular features, record both the diameter and center-to-center spacing where there is more than one. For holes, do not record only the diameter: the center coordinates and, where relevant, the counterbore or countersink and depth determine how a fastener will actually meet the part.

Measure controls in the positions they can occupy, not only at rest. A moving part needs an unobstructed keep-out volume across its travel. If a whammy bar, strum bar, or other control moves through an arc, check the surrounding space along that arc before drawing a wall or clip nearby.

How do I measure without opening or damaging the controller?

Start with accessible exterior surfaces and openings. Do not infer hidden geometry from an outside measurement: an exterior shell dimension does not reveal the internal shape, wall thickness, or position of a hidden boss. Remove a cover only when the product documentation identifies it as user-serviceable and permits removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disassembly is model-specific. The cited Rock Band guide cautions users not to modify, disassemble, or open the controller (Rock Band guide). For a controller with a similar restriction, treat teardown as outside this basic measurement workflow. Design around what you can measure safely; do not force a caliper into a gap or pry at a shell to reach an inaccessible dimension.

If an accessory depends on a hidden feature, first check the controller’s own documentation for a permitted way to expose it. If none is documented, reconsider whether the design can attach to a measurable external surface instead. An uncertain internal dimension is not a reliable basis for a close-fitting printed part.

How should I turn the measurements into a CAD model?

Build a simple reference model of the controller before making the accessory. Include the measured outer envelope, mounting faces, holes, controls, and keep-out volumes. This reference makes it easier to see whether a proposed wall or fastener occupies space that belongs to a control or access feature.

  1. Set up the datum and units. Use the same X/Y/Z directions and reference point as the worksheet, and enter dimensions in millimetres.
  2. Model the measured controller interfaces. Add the envelope, contact surfaces, holes, openings, and moving-control clearance volumes that affect this accessory. Keep detachable parts distinct.
  3. Design the accessory around that reference. Add the intended wall thickness and fastening features while checking access openings and control keep-outs.
  4. Make openings from measured values. In Adafruit’s Tinkercad workflow, measured values are entered with the Ruler tool, cutting solids are changed to “Hole,” and the solids are grouped to subtract the openings before export (Adafruit’s enclosure workflow).
  5. Keep measurements editable. Maintain a parameter table for measured values so a later controller revision can be updated without remodeling the whole accessory.
  6. Export and test before committing to the full print. Export the design for printing, then use a small test print to check the fit of its most demanding interfaces.

A small lead-in or chamfer can help an edge meet its intended surface, but include one only where it will not weaken retention or expose a control. Do not choose a clearance number simply because it worked for another controller. The available published examples do not establish a universal fit tolerance; clearance is a design parameter to tune with a test print on the actual controller.

Which attachment approach should I design for?

Choose an attachment method by considering fit, service access, strength, and whether the controller must remain unmodified. A design that holds securely but blocks a battery cover or connector may be unsuitable even if its dimensions are accurate.

Approach Questions to resolve before modeling Trade-off to consider
Clip-on Which external surfaces can the clip grip, and can it pass over them without pressing a control? A removable interface avoids permanent alteration, but its fit depends on the measured contact geometry and the clip’s retention.
Screw-mounted Are there documented, usable mounting points? What are the hole, head-seat, depth, and center-location measurements? Fasteners can provide a defined attachment, but the design must preserve access and avoid assuming hidden holes or internal structure.
Adhesive Which surface would receive the adhesive, and must the accessory later be removed? It avoids designing a clip or fastener interface, while potentially making removal or repositioning less straightforward.
Strap-mounted Where are the strap hardware and strap path, and will the mounted part interfere with either? The design must account for hardware position and usable strap access, not just the controller shell.

Also decide whether the accessory needs an exact measured cavity or can use an adjustable or shimmed interface. An adjustable interface may accommodate variation, but it still needs to clear controls, connectors, and moving parts. Think about print orientation, wall thickness, fasteners, and support needs as part of the strength and printability decision; do not treat a fit check as proof that the part is suitable for every load.

Custom printed guitar-controller hardware is an established product category: ClickForge lists a removable neck and mechanical fret and strum controls, while Phantom Limb Designs describes controllers with detachable headstocks and screw-and-hex-wrench assembly (ClickForge; Phantom Limb Designs). Those examples illustrate different design choices, but their dimensions do not transfer to another controller without measurement.

How do I validate fit before printing the full accessory?

Print a small coupon that includes the most restrictive opening, one mounting feature, and the adjacent wall. Testing only a large, uncomplicated surface can miss the interface that actually prevents the accessory from seating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test the coupon on an unpowered controller first.
  2. Check that it seats fully and that no part of it presses a button.
  3. Check that the strum and whammy controls remain free to move.
  4. Confirm that connectors, battery access, and strap hardware are not covered or blocked.
  5. Adjust the CAD parameters that control the failed interface, then print another coupon if needed.
  6. After the accessory is assembled, test the controls through their full range before printing or relying on the final part.

Record the printer, nozzle, layer height, material, infill, number of perimeters, orientation, and support settings with each prototype. Without those details, a later version that fits differently may be hard to diagnose.

Published print settings are examples for particular projects, not guarantees for every controller or printer. Adafruit specifies PLA and a minimum build area of 250 × 148 × approximately 50 mm for its four-piece enclosure (Adafruit 3D-printing instructions). A separate published controller build reports PLA, 15% infill, two perimeters, and a 0.2 mm layer height (3Dgo controller listing). Apply settings to the design and printer at hand rather than copying either recipe as a universal requirement.

What should I put in the measurement worksheet?

A useful worksheet is precise enough that you can rebuild the CAD reference later or compare a second controller revision without guessing what a number means. Record the date and the instrument used along with the dimensions.

  • Identity: manufacturer, exact model, revision, connection type, and whether detachable neck or headstock parts are attached.
  • Reference: units, X/Y/Z definitions, chosen datum, and a brief description of the reference face or point.
  • Measurements: each feature’s name, repeated readings, final recorded value, and location from the datum where applicable.
  • Access notes: which covers are user-serviceable, which openings must remain clear, and any dimensions that were not safely accessible.
  • Prototype record: printer and slicer settings, coupon revision, observed fit, and which CAD parameter you changed afterward.

Keep the photos with the worksheet and CAD file. A measurement labeled only “hole = 3 mm” is ambiguous; a record that identifies the hole, its center coordinates, depth, and relation to the datum is much more useful when you revisit the design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a ruler instead of a caliper for a guitar-controller accessory?

A ruler is useful for the controller’s broad envelope, but it is a poor choice for small openings, button diameters, or screw features that determine a close fit. If you only have a ruler, avoid designing a tight press-fit interface from those readings; choose a more forgiving attachment strategy and validate it with a coupon.

Should I measure a controller while its detachable neck is installed?

Measure the body and the detachable part separately, then note whether the intended accessory uses the assembled or separated configuration. That distinction helps prevent an overall length measurement from being mistaken for the dimensions of the body alone.

Can I scale a model made for a different guitar controller until it fits mine?

Uniform scaling changes every dimension together, but controller interfaces rarely vary in one uniform way. A scaled model can still misplace holes, openings, and control clearances, so use it only as a starting shape and rebuild the critical interfaces from measurements of your own controller.

What if my controller has no model label?

Record its visible markings, connection type, and distinguishing physical features, then photograph it from several sides so you can identify the exact unit later. Do not assume a visually similar controller shares the same shell or control spacing; measure the interfaces the accessory will use.
