On desktop Chrome, open a New Tab page and select AI Mode beside the search box, or press Tab and then Enter. In the panel, the plus/context menu can attach recent tabs, images, or files before you submit a question. To remove AI Mode searches, open AI Mode history and delete one item or choose Delete all. To reduce typed autocomplete, go to Settings > You and Google > Google services and switch off Improve search suggestions; local suggestions drawn from your browsing or search history can still remain. Other New Tab cards and shortcuts have separate controls, while organization administrators can manage AI Mode entry points with the AIModeSettings policy.
What is AI Mode in Chrome’s new tab?
AI Mode is a search entry point built into Chrome’s New Tab page. Selecting it opens an AI Mode panel where you can compose a question, attach context, and then continue on an AI Mode results page. It is separate from Chrome’s ordinary typed suggestions and from the recommendation cards that appear elsewhere on a New Tab page, so each feature has its own control.

- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- Select AI Mode beside the search box. Google also documents the keyboard shortcut Tab, then Enter.
- When the AI Mode panel opens, type your question.
- Optionally open the plus or context menu to add recent tabs, images, or files.
- Choose any available tool, such as Canvas, Create Images, or Deep Search, if it fits the task.
- Submit the question. Chrome opens the AI Mode results page.
The New Tab workflow requires you to be signed in to Chrome and not browsing in Incognito mode. If the AI Mode control is absent, those prerequisites are the first things to check, followed by availability and organization-policy causes.
Why is the AI Mode button missing?
A missing button does not necessarily indicate a broken installation. Google is still expanding availability by device, account, region, and language, and the feature is not offered to every user. A managed browser can also receive policy settings that alter whether AI Mode recommendations appear.

- Close the Incognito window and retry from a normal New Tab page.
- Update Chrome if your organization or release channel permits updates, then open a fresh New Tab.
- Consider rollout timing: Google’s release notes place initial desktop rollout activity in Chrome 138 and later entry-point rollout in Chrome 139 across desktop and mobile platforms.
- If this is a work or school profile, ask the administrator whether AI Mode recommendations are controlled centrally.
How do I add tabs, images, or files to an AI Mode question?
Start AI Mode from a normal New Tab page, then use the panel’s plus or context menu before submitting. The April 16, 2026 Google product announcement describes this menu as a way to add recent tabs, images, and files. The available tools can include Canvas, Create Images, and Deep Search, but the exact set can vary with rollout and account availability.
What happens after I submit?
Your prompt and any attached context are sent into the AI Mode workflow, and Chrome opens the AI Mode results page. Treat attachments as part of the question: remove a tab, image, or file from the panel if it contains information you did not intend to include.
How do I delete AI Mode history?
AI Mode has its own history control on the New Tab page. You can remove one search or clear all AI Mode searches from that panel.

- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- Select AI Mode beside the search box.
- Choose AI Mode history.
- Delete an individual search, or select Delete all to remove the AI Mode history shown there.
Deleting from the AI Mode panel does not guarantee that the item disappears instantly from every Google activity view. Google says deleted AI Mode searches may still appear in the account’s My Activity page for some time and are automatically deleted there within 24 hours. You can also remove them manually from My Activity or Search history if you want the account-level record cleared sooner.

What does this deletion control?
The control targets searches listed in AI Mode history. It is not a blanket wipe of Chrome browsing history, ordinary Google Search history, downloaded files, or New Tab personalization data. Use the appropriate history or activity control for each type of record.
How do I turn off typed search suggestions without losing my history?
Chrome’s Improve search suggestions setting controls whether what you type is sent to your default search engine to help generate suggestions. Turning it off does not erase your existing browsing or search history, and Chrome may still show local suggestions based on that history.
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Settings.
- Select You and Google.
- Open Google services.
- Turn Improve search suggestions off.
Afterward, suggestions that depend on sending your in-progress text to the default search engine should stop. Entries generated locally from activity already stored in the browser or account can continue to appear, so this switch is a data-sharing control rather than a complete autocomplete eraser.

How do I hide other suggestions on Chrome’s desktop New Tab page?
Desktop New Tab suggestions are not all controlled by the AI Mode or search-suggestion switches. Open Customize Chrome to manage the page elements Google exposes there.
Change shortcut behavior
Under Customize Chrome, choose between My shortcuts and Most visited sites. You can also hide shortcuts entirely when you do not want a row of links below the search box.
Remove a resume-browsing card
The same customization area lets you hide an individual resume-browsing card. This action affects that card rather than typed autocomplete, AI Mode history, or the account’s broader activity record.
How do I manage New Tab recommendations on Android?
Android places its New Tab controls under Customize new tab page. The available options cover more than search text and can affect the Discover experience and recommendation personalization.
- Manage My shortcuts.
- Control New Tab page cards.
- Turn the Discover feed on or off.
- Manage interests and mark topics or publishers as not interesting.
- Review the account activity used to personalize recommendations.
These Android controls are separate from deleting AI Mode history and from the desktop Improve search suggestions switch. If your goal is to stop recommendation cards rather than autocomplete, use the New Tab customization screen instead of changing Google services.

Can an administrator control AI Mode in Chrome?
Yes. Chrome Enterprise release notes identify AIModeSettings as the policy that controls AI Mode search recommendations in the address bar and New Tab page search box. This policy can affect both the presence of recommendations and how the entry point behaves on managed browsers.
Rollout and policy behavior can change with the Chrome version and the organization’s configuration. If a work or school browser repeatedly restores a setting or never shows AI Mode despite meeting the normal account and browsing requirements, the administrator’s policy is a likely explanation. Personal users cannot override an organization’s policy from the New Tab page.
What should an administrator verify?
- Which Chrome release the organization deploys, particularly around the Chrome 138 and 139 rollout stages described in the release notes.
- Whether AIModeSettings is configured for the relevant desktop or mobile-managed profile.
- Whether the policy applies to the profile being tested rather than a different signed-in account.
- Whether regional, language, or account rollout limits still apply even when the policy permits recommendations.
How do I choose the least disruptive privacy change?
Start with the narrowest control that matches what bothers you. Deleting AI Mode history removes recorded AI Mode searches; turning off Improve search suggestions limits cloud-assisted typed predictions but leaves local history suggestions possible; New Tab customization hides cards or shortcuts without changing search activity.

What should I check when a change does not seem to work?
The AI Mode button still appears
Verify that you changed the right feature. Turning off Improve search suggestions does not remove the AI Mode entry point, because they are separate controls. If the button is still present, availability or an administrator policy may govern it.
Suggestions still appear after the privacy switch
Local suggestions based on browsing or search history can remain after Improve search suggestions is disabled. The setting stops sending typed text to the default search engine for suggestions; it does not promise an empty prediction list.
An old AI Mode search remains visible in My Activity
Google allows a delay of up to 24 hours for deleted AI Mode searches to disappear automatically from My Activity. If you need it gone sooner, remove it manually from My Activity or Search history.
The customization option is missing
Check whether you are on the correct device and page. Desktop uses Customize Chrome, while Android uses Customize new tab page; controls can differ by Chrome version, account, and rollout.

What changed with the 2026 New Tab rollout?
Google’s April 16, 2026 product announcement describes a New Tab plus menu for adding tabs, images, and files to AI Mode prompts. The announcement says the update was initially available in the United States. Google’s help documentation separately notes that AI Mode availability is still being expanded outside the United States and to additional languages, so the announcement’s initial geography should not be treated as a permanent availability boundary.

Can I use AI Mode in an Incognito window?
The documented New Tab workflow requires a normal signed-in Chrome session, so Incognito is not the supported path for opening AI Mode from the New Tab page. Use a regular profile when testing whether the feature is available.
Will hiding a New Tab card delete the activity behind it?
No. Hiding a shortcut or resume-browsing card changes what is displayed on the New Tab page. It does not serve as a general deletion command for browsing records or account activity.
Why can two computers show different AI Mode controls?
Google is expanding AI Mode by device, region, language, and account, and managed Chrome policies can further change recommendations. Different rollout status or profiles can therefore produce different New Tab interfaces even at similar Chrome versions.

No. The AI Mode history control targets searches listed in AI Mode history. Ordinary Google Search history and other account activity require their own My Activity or Search history controls.
What is the fastest way to stop Discover topics on Android?
