Start by making the game’s text and objects easier to see: enlarge interface text, improve contrast, enable object highlights, and turn on subtitles and captions. Then reduce physical and time pressure with remappable controls, gentler difficulty, fewer or longer timers, hints, and flexible saving. These are useful starting points, not a universal preset: hidden-object games differ, and a particular title may not offer every option.

Which settings should I change first?

Begin with the options that improve legibility and object visibility without changing how a puzzle works. Try the baseline below, then adjust individual controls if they obscure the scene, make clues too easy to spot, or otherwise interfere with the way you want to play.

  1. Enlarge text and interface elements. Check the interface, journal, inventory, objectives, and subtitles—not just the main menu. Choose the largest size that remains readable without hiding important parts of the scene.
  2. Increase contrast and object emphasis. Look for high-contrast modes, object outlines, interaction highlights, or similar visual cues. In a densely illustrated search scene, making a selectable object stand apart from its surroundings is often a useful first visual adjustment.
  3. Turn on subtitles and, if available, closed captions. Add speaker names and a readable background where possible, then adjust dialogue, effects, ambience, and music separately.
  4. Reduce physical effort. Remap repeated actions, use a toggle instead of a hold when offered, and choose mouse-only or keyboard-only controls if the game supports them.
  5. Ease time and failure pressure. Select the gentlest difficulty, disable or extend timers, use hints, and choose flexible save options. If the game offers puzzle skips, you can use them as an access feature.
  6. Reduce uncomfortable motion. Disable motion blur and screen shake, and try camera stabilization or a steadier-camera option if available.

Change one group of settings at a time and revisit a representative search scene and puzzle. That makes it easier to identify which adjustment helps and whether another setting has made text, clues, or controls harder to use.

How do I make a hidden-object scene easier to see?

Prioritize text legibility, contrast, and ways to distinguish interactive objects from background detail. Hidden-object scenes can be visually dense, so the aim is to make clues accessible without relying on a single cue such as color.

Make small text readable

Increase text for more than dialogue. Journal entries, inventory labels, objective lists, item descriptions, and hint text may all carry puzzle information. If a game has separate controls for interface scale and subtitle size, adjust both. A readable sans-serif font and a solid or adjustable background behind subtitles can help text remain distinct from detailed artwork.

Steamworks’ accessibility documentation gives 38 pixels at 1080p and 76 pixels at 4K as guidance for adjustable text. These are platform recommendations, not universal minimums for every game, screen size, viewing distance, or display. Judge the result in the game’s actual interface: a size that is readable in a menu may still be too small in a journal or during play.

Improve contrast and object salience

Try a high-contrast option, selectable-object outlines, interaction highlighting, or another visual emphasis control. Some games offer a zoom or magnification feature; if so, use it to inspect a scene rather than assuming every item must be found at its original scale. If an outline makes every object compete for attention, use a less aggressive option or turn it off for scenes where it obscures details.

Unity Technologies’ 2026 game-accessibility guidance presents contrast targets of at least 4.5:1 for standard-size text, 3:1 for large text, and 7:1 or higher for high-contrast modes. Those are general accessibility targets, not measurements of a particular game or a guarantee that its clues will be visible. A game’s contrast setting may change how the whole scene looks, so check that important objects, text, and backgrounds remain distinguishable.

Do not make color carry a clue by itself

If an object or puzzle depends on telling red from green—or on another color distinction—look for a shape, label, icon, pattern, outline, or other cue that conveys the same information. A color filter may help some players, but Steamworks cautions against treating a full-screen filter as the only solution. Where the game has no non-color cue, a filter may change the appearance of the scene without making the underlying clue more accessible.

Which settings help if text is too small or scenes are cluttered?

Use a combination of larger text, adjustable subtitle backgrounds, contrast controls, highlights, and any available zoom. There is no single setting that addresses every visibility problem, so match the adjustment to what is hard to distinguish.

What is difficult Settings to look for What to check after changing them
Dialogue, journal entries, or objectives are hard to read Text size, interface scale, font choice, subtitle background Confirm that the text is readable during play and does not cover important scene details.
Objects blend into the background Contrast, object outlines, interaction highlights, zoom Check whether selectable items stand apart without making the whole image distracting.
A clue relies on a color difference Color filters plus shape, icon, label, outline, or pattern cues See whether the clue remains understandable without identifying the colors alone.
Important information is conveyed through sound Closed captions, speaker names, separate volume controls Check that captions include relevant effects, not only spoken dialogue, if the game supports that distinction.

That last distinction matters: subtitles usually present speech, while closed captions can identify important sound effects. A title may use different terminology or offer only one of these options. Microsoft’s official game-accessibility guidance says, “Today, it’s expected that games include subtitles and closed captioning.” The availability and completeness of those features still depend on the individual game.

How should I set subtitles, captions, and audio?

Turn on speech subtitles and captions for important non-speech sounds where available, then make them readable and easy to distinguish. Separate volume controls can also preserve useful audio cues without forcing you to listen to every part of the mix at the same level.

  • Enable speaker identification. Speaker names can help clarify dialogue when voices are off-screen or several characters are talking.
  • Add a background behind text. A solid or adjustable caption container can separate words from a busy scene. If the game offers opacity controls, choose a level that keeps the text clear without concealing too much artwork.
  • Check what captions cover. Some games caption dialogue but not sound effects. If an effect signals an event or clue, look for closed captions or a visual equivalent.
  • Balance the mix. Adjust speech, effects, ambience, and music separately if sliders are available. You can lower distracting channels while keeping an important cue audible.
  • Keep access to repeated information. Look for dialogue or instruction history, repeat-last-instruction controls, or a journal entry that preserves clues.

Steamworks recommends adjustable text, speaker identification, a readable sans-serif font, and a background container for subtitles. These are practical criteria to look for, not a guarantee that every game provides them.

What controls help if rapid presses or button holds are difficult?

Reduce repeated effort and make controls predictable: remap actions, replace holds with toggles when possible, and choose a supported input method that is comfortable. Control labels and options vary, so check both the game’s own settings and any relevant platform input options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remap the actions you use most

Start with repeated actions such as selecting an object, confirming a choice, opening a journal, or using a hint. Move them to controls that are easier to reach or operate, while avoiding a layout that makes accidental presses more likely. If the game supports mouse-only or keyboard-only play, try that before combining input methods that add unnecessary switching.

Replace holds and rapid presses

Look for hold-to-toggle, toggle, or reduced-input options. A toggle can remove the need to keep a button pressed, while a slower or less demanding interaction setting may help when a game asks for rapid input. These controls are not available in every title, and a toggle can behave differently from a hold; check its effect in a low-pressure menu or scene first.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Adjust pointer and controller behavior

If pointer movement is tiring, reduce sensitivity where the game allows it. On a controller, dead-zone settings may help if small movements cause unwanted input or if a stick does not respond as expected. Make small changes and check both precision and comfort: an overly large dead zone can make subtle movement harder to register.

A programmable mouse with remappable buttons can be an optional hardware aid, but suitability depends on the player, device, and game. The first step is to see whether the controls already built into the game or platform are sufficient.

How can I reduce timers, puzzle pressure, and fatigue?

Choose a lower-pressure difficulty, turn off or extend timers, use hints when useful, and save in a way that lets you take breaks. If a puzzle skip is available, it can be an access option rather than a measure of whether you solved the game “properly.”

Set the pace to suit the player

Look for difficulty controls that affect time limits, clue availability, or penalties for mistakes. A “casual” or “relaxed” label may not mean the same thing across games, so check the description of each setting rather than assuming it changes only one feature. If there is a timer toggle, try it before changing unrelated puzzle settings.

Use hints and skips deliberately

Hints can reduce repeated searching when a scene becomes tiring or an important object is difficult to distinguish. If hints reveal information in stages, use the least revealing level that helps. A puzzle skip can keep the story moving when the interaction itself is inaccessible; it need not mean skipping the entire game.

BROK the InvestiGator is an official example of an adventure game that describes skippable puzzles and fights, adapted tutorials, and repeatable speech and instructions among its accessibility features. That example shows what one title offers; it does not establish that every hidden-object adventure includes comparable options.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Choose saves that support breaks

Check whether the game allows manual saving, saves at any time, or relies on checkpoints. If a session might be interrupted, save before leaving a scene or starting a lengthy puzzle whenever the game permits it. A game with limited save points may make a short break harder to plan, so learn where progress is recorded before committing to a long section.

How do I reduce motion or avoid uncomfortable visual effects?

Turn off motion blur and screen shake if those effects are uncomfortable, and enable camera stabilization or a steadier-camera option where offered. Although hidden-object play often centers on a fixed scene, transitions, animated sequences, and cinematics can still include motion.

Try the options separately so you can tell which change helps. If a transition remains uncomfortable, look for a way to skip or shorten it, or pause before continuing. Do not assume a photosensitivity option covers every effect: settings and their scope differ by title, and a general color filter is not the same as a dedicated visual-effects control.

Can I play a hidden-object game with limited or no vision?

Some adventures offer substantial support through narration, audio description, repeatable instructions, and puzzles adapted for blind players, but ordinary object highlighting alone does not make a visual search game playable without sight. Check whether the game adapts its core scenes and interactions, not just its menus.

BROK the InvestiGator describes full narration and audio description, puzzles adapted for blindness, adapted tutorials, repeatable speech and instructions, positional audio, larger fonts, increased contrast, and skippable puzzles and fights. It is a useful example of a more comprehensive approach, not proof that other titles offer the same level of support.

When reading an accessibility description, distinguish menu narration from screen-reader support during play, and both from audio description of scene content. The key question is whether the information needed to find objects and solve puzzles is available in a usable form.

How can I compare accessibility between hidden-object adventures?

Compare the features that affect the actual play loop: reading clues, finding objects, understanding sound cues, operating controls, managing time, and navigating menus. Store tags can help you discover candidates, but a tag is not a substitute for checking a game’s current settings or official accessibility guide.

  • Legibility: Check text size for the interface, journal, inventory, objectives, and subtitles; font readability; subtitle backgrounds; and contrast options.
  • Object visibility: Look for outlines, highlights, zoom, non-color clues, and whether important items can be distinguished from scenery.
  • Audio redundancy: Check dialogue subtitles, captions for effects, speaker names, separate volume sliders, and visual equivalents for important sounds.
  • Motor access: Look for remapping, mouse-only or keyboard-only play, toggle options, sensitivity controls, and controller dead zones. Also check whether rapid presses or mandatory holds can be avoided.
  • Pacing: Compare difficulty choices, hint frequency, timers, puzzle skips, and save flexibility.
  • Sensory comfort: Check motion blur, camera shake, camera stabilization, and any relevant visual-effects or photosensitivity options.
  • Navigation and narration: Find out whether menus are narrated, whether screen-reader support extends into play, whether instructions can be repeated, and whether the core puzzle interaction is accessible.

Steam’s accessibility tags are a discovery aid. Microsoft says accessibility metadata has criteria publishers must meet, while Bethesda’s detailed guide to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle illustrates why a title-specific description is useful. Bethesda documents adjustable UI font size, UI color presets, motion blur and camera-stabilization controls, screen-shake control, subtitles, closed captions, speaker names, subtitle backgrounds, color filters, high-contrast object highlighting, remapping, toggles, and dead-zone controls. Those are comparison points for an adventure game, not evidence that another game has the same menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the settings menu does not solve the problem?

First, check whether the game has separate controls for the part that is difficult: interface text may not control subtitles, and a general contrast option may not highlight selectable objects. If a feature is missing, consider whether the game offers a workaround such as hints, zoom, repeatable instructions, a puzzle skip, or a different supported input method.

Some limits cannot be corrected with a general setting. A color filter may not replace a missing non-color clue, and menu narration does not make an unadapted visual puzzle accessible. A larger display may help with text legibility for some players, but it cannot add missing captions or change how a puzzle communicates information. Treat hardware as a secondary option after checking the software controls; there is no single display size or peripheral that is right for everyone.

When evaluating a title, use its current official guide or settings menu rather than inferring support from the genre, platform tag, or a feature in another game. Availability can vary by game, platform, edition, and patch, and menu names may differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do accessibility settings carry over when I change devices?

Not necessarily. Settings may be stored by the game, the platform, or an individual device or profile, so check the new setup before starting a long session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a color filter make every color-based puzzle accessible?

No. A filter changes how colors appear but cannot guarantee that a clue remains distinguishable. A separate shape, icon, label, or pattern cue is a more dependable alternative when the game provides one.

Are Steam accessibility tags a guarantee that a game will work for me?

No. Tags can help narrow a search, but your needs and the details of a title’s implementation matter. Check the game’s current official feature guide and, if possible, available descriptions of its specific controls.
