You can make a game easier to follow without hearing its audio by combining full captions, directional visual indicators, clear speaker labels, and—if supported—haptic cues. Start in the game’s Accessibility or Audio settings, enable captions before play, and look for options that show where off-screen sounds come from. No single cue should be the only way to notice an important event.
What settings help you follow a game without sound?
Use several channels together: captions for audio information, on-screen indicators for immediate events and direction, and optional vibration for tactile feedback. The goal is not merely to turn dialogue into text. A player relying on sight rather than hearing may also need to know that a sound occurred, what made it, and where it came from.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 103 summarizes the design principle: “When cues are provided through multiple sensory methods, relying on sight or hearing alone is no longer a requirement for success.” In practice, a useful setup avoids making a critical clue depend only on sound, a color change, or controller vibration. If a game offers these settings, look for them under its current Accessibility or Audio menus; labels and availability vary by game, platform, and software version.
What is the difference between subtitles and captions?
Subtitles represent speech or dialogue; captions can represent all audio, including important non-speech sounds. If you need to follow a game with audio off, subtitles alone may leave out the footsteps, gunfire, music changes, or other sound cues that communicate what is happening.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 104 defines the distinction this way: “Subtitles are text equivalents for the speech or dialogue of a character, while captions are text equivalents for all audio.” For practical purposes, enable captions or a setting described as full captions when available, rather than assuming a subtitles option covers every sound. The game’s terminology may differ, so check the description or preview if one is provided.
How do you set up captions before starting a game?
Turn on the most complete caption option before gameplay begins, especially if you want to understand an opening cinematic or tutorial. Then check whether the captions give enough information to identify speakers and locate off-screen sounds.
- Open the game’s Accessibility or Audio settings. Menu names and locations differ, so use the current in-game settings rather than relying on a path that may apply only to another platform or version.
- Enable subtitles and captions. If the game offers separate controls, enable subtitles for dialogue and captions for non-speech audio. If only one option is available, consult its description to see what it includes.
- Look for speaker names and context. A character name can identify who is talking; a label such as “on radio” can clarify that the speaker is not in the scene. Directional labels can help distinguish an off-screen speaker.
- Look for sound-direction options. Captions may use arrows or words such as “left” and “right” to identify where an off-screen sound originates. Enable these options if the game provides them.
- Check the result during play. Confirm that the captions appear at a readable moment and that their descriptions give the information you need. If the game offers separate caption settings, adjust them rather than assuming dialogue subtitles will cover other audio.
Captions can make a sound understandable without making its source or location clear. A description of a sound and an indication of its direction answer different questions; for example, knowing that footsteps occurred does not by itself establish which side they came from.
How can you tell where footsteps, attacks, or other sounds come from?
Choose captions and visual awareness indicators that communicate direction, not just the existence of a sound or threat. Directional information is especially useful when an enemy, speaker, or event is off-screen.
Check for captions that pair a sound description with an arrow or directional word. Also look for awareness, damage, or threat indicators that point toward the source. A generic flash can say that something happened, but an indicator aimed toward the source gives more actionable information. Microsoft’s guidance uses arrows to show whether an off-screen sound is to the left or right and a red halo as an example of showing the direction of incoming damage.

When comparing options, consider four qualities:
- Coverage: Does the feature cover dialogue alone, or important effects and other sounds as well?
- Directionality: Does it show where the sound or threat originated, or only that it occurred?
- Persistence: Is the cue a momentary flash, or does useful information remain visible long enough to act on?
- Redundancy: Is the information conveyed with more than one cue, such as text plus an icon or position, or does it depend on a single signal?
These are ways to judge the options a game actually provides, not promises that every game will offer a setting for each quality. Captions can cover many kinds of audio; a directional HUD marker can quickly point out a nearby threat; vibration can add a tactile layer. The combination that works best depends on the game’s available controls.

How should you use icons, color, and on-screen alerts?
Prefer visual alerts that combine more than color: shape, screen position, a recognizable icon, or text can reinforce what the signal means. A red-versus-green distinction by itself may not communicate the intended difference for every player.
When you review the HUD, ask whether an alert tells you what happened and where to look. A symbol paired with a short text label can reduce guesswork; a position or directional marker can add location. Microsoft’s guidance specifically recommends pairing symbols with text to reduce cognitive load. Where a game has alert or awareness options, choose the clearest combination it supports rather than relying on a color flash alone.
Not every visual cue needs to repeat every detail. Captions can carry descriptions of sounds, while a separate marker can provide direction. The useful test is whether the combined signals give enough information to understand and respond to an important event without having to infer meaning from color alone.
Can controller vibration help you follow a game?
Yes, if the game and controller support it, vibration can add a tactile cue for events such as attacks, gunshots, pickups, or environmental changes. Treat it as a supplementary channel rather than a replacement for captions and visual indicators: some players turn vibration off, and not all controllers support it.

Look for a vibration or haptics setting in the game’s Accessibility or Audio menus. Some games expose separate controls for different event types, so you may be able to choose which cues are useful. A compatible controller with adjustable vibration can add tactile alerts when the game supports them, but buying one does not guarantee that a particular game or platform will provide the relevant cues.
Microsoft’s gaming accessibility documentation notes that players who cannot hear game audio “must typically determine their next steps based on visual and haptic cues alone.” That is a reason to make cues available across channels—not a reason to make vibration mandatory. A player should not lose essential information just because vibration is unavailable or disabled.
What should you change if you can hear some audio?
If you hear some sounds but have trouble separating speech or effects, adjust the mix as well as the visual cues. Lowering music and raising dialogue, effects, or chat independently can make the sounds you need easier to distinguish, where the game provides separate controls.
Try mono output if stereo separation makes speech or effects difficult to distinguish. Stereo mixes can place information differently between left and right channels; mono may be easier to follow for some players, though the best choice depends on what you find clear. You can still use captions and directional indicators alongside a changed audio mix instead of treating the choice as all-or-nothing.

What does a comprehensive implementation look like?
The Last of Us Part I provides a concrete example of multiple accessibility features working together. Its hearing accessibility preset includes awareness indicators, pickup notifications, story and combat subtitles, subtitle names, subtitle direction, and combat vibration cues.
The game also exposes vibration settings for gunshots, enemy attacks, environmental events, cinematics, and speech-to-vibrations. These are examples of controls one game offers, not a standard feature list that can be assumed to exist elsewhere. If another game does not include the same preset or detailed vibration categories, look for the underlying options—captions, direction, speaker identification, HUD awareness, and optional haptics—under its own settings.

Use a part of the game where you can safely check several kinds of information, such as dialogue, an off-screen sound, and a threat or pickup alert. The aim is to find out whether the settings communicate what happened, who or what caused it, and where it came from when location matters.

If a cue is unclear, change the relevant option if available: caption coverage for missing sound descriptions, direction settings for unclear location, or the audio mix for speech that is difficult to separate. Some games may not provide a visual or haptic equivalent for every sound. In that case, the available settings can still improve access, but they cannot guarantee that every audio-dependent mechanic has been replaced.
Why can the exact settings differ between games?
Accessibility menus, controller support, and feature names can change by platform and software version. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines V3.2 were published on June 8, 2023, while its captions guidance page shows a later update date of April 3, 2026. These dates identify the guidance documents; they do not establish that a particular game has implemented every recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do game captions describe music as well as sound effects?
They can: captions are intended to represent audio beyond speech, and Microsoft’s guidance gives “music intensifies” as an example. Whether a specific game captions music or other audio is a title-specific implementation choice.
Can I use these settings in a game’s opening cinematic?
Enable captions before starting if the game lets you reach settings first. Some games may not expose settings until after the opening, so the availability of captions during that sequence depends on the title.
Does a haptic controller work with every game?
No. Both the game and controller need to support the relevant vibration cues, and support can vary by platform. Check the game’s current settings rather than assuming a controller feature will be used automatically.
Are Xbox accessibility guidelines a guarantee that a game has these features?
No. The guidelines provide design guidance, while each game’s actual controls and implementation differ. Check the current in-game Accessibility or Audio settings to see what that title offers.
