Press it again to dim the display one step at a time.
Lower screen brightness with the top-row key
- Find the top-row key marked with a small or dimmer sun. On Apple’s documented MacBook Air and MacBook Pro layouts, this is F1; F2 increases brightness. Apple’s brightness and volume guide and Mac keyboard guide show these controls.
- Press the dimmer-sun key once to reduce brightness by one step. Press it repeatedly until the screen is comfortable.
Key markings can vary, so use the dimmer-sun symbol rather than relying only on the F1 label.

If the brightness key acts like F1
Your top row may be set to use standard function keys. Hold Fn or Globe while pressing the brightness key to use its brightness function. On macOS Ventura or later, you can change the setting in System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys. See Apple’s instructions for using function keys.

MacBook Pro models with a Touch Bar
On a Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro, hold Fn to show F1–F12 in the Touch Bar, then tap the brightness key you need. This applies to models with a Touch Bar; other MacBooks use their physical keyboard controls.

Use Control Center if the key is unavailable
- Open Control Center from the menu bar.
- Drag the Brightness slider down to dim the display.
Apple says this slider works on any Mac, regardless of keyboard. On a Mac with brightness keys, holding Option while pressing either display-brightness key opens Display settings. See Apple’s brightness and volume guide.
Make a smaller brightness adjustment
For finer control than the normal key step, press Option-Shift-Brightness Down. The corresponding Option-Shift-Brightness Up shortcut makes a smaller increase. Apple documents these shortcuts in its Mac display settings guide.

Screen brightness is not keyboard backlighting
The display-brightness keys adjust the screen. Keyboard brightness controls adjust the illumination beneath the keys. To change the keyboard backlight, use System Settings > Keyboard, a keyboard-brightness key if your Mac has one, or the Keyboard Brightness control in Control Center if you have added it. Apple explains the separate controls in its keyboard backlight guide.
