How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi: Settings That Matter Most

Use WPA3-Personal or WPA2-Personal, change both router and Wi-Fi passwords, keep software current, and separate guests and connected devices where supported.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To secure a home Wi-Fi network, use WPA3-Personal if your router supports it—or WPA2-Personal otherwise—then protect both the router administrator account and the Wi-Fi password. Keep router software updated, disable features you do not use, and separate visitors and connected devices where your router allows it. These steps reduce avoidable exposure; they cannot guarantee protection from every attack.

Choose a strong Wi-Fi encryption setting

Open your router’s settings and select WPA3-Personal if it is available. If not, use WPA2-Personal. The Federal Trade Commission describes WPA3 as the newer and best option, while explaining that both WPA3 and WPA2 scramble information sent over the network. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.

Router menus vary by manufacturer, so look for wireless or Wi-Fi security settings in the router’s app or administrator page. If an older router offers only outdated WPA or WEP, check for a software update first. If WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable, the FTC advises considering a replacement. Before changing encryption modes, check whether the devices in your home support the setting you intend to use.

Change the two passwords that protect different things

Your router administrator password controls access to settings; your Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network. Changing one does not change the other. Replace the defaults for both, and use a unique Wi-Fi network name that does not reveal your name, address, or router brand. Avoid including those details in account credentials as well.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Use passwords that are difficult to guess and are not reused on other accounts. Share the Wi-Fi password only with people who need access; a guest network can reduce how often you have to share the password for your main network.

Update the router and secure its administrator access

Check the manufacturer’s website for router software updates before setting up a new router and periodically afterward. If your internet service provider supplied the router, ask how updates are delivered and whether you need to install them yourself. Updates can address security issues, but the exact process depends on the router and provider.

While signed in to the router’s administrator account, review these controls:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remote management: Turn it off unless you need to manage the router from outside your home. It exposes router controls over the internet.
  • WPS: Turn off Wi-Fi Protected Setup if you do not use it. WPS can let devices join without typing the Wi-Fi password.
  • UPnP: Turn off Universal Plug and Play if your household does not need it. It allows devices on the network to find each other, which may be convenient but can increase exposure.
  • Firewall: Confirm that the router’s built-in firewall is enabled.
  • Administrator session: Log out after changing settings.

The options may appear under different names or locations depending on the router. The FTC explains these features and recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP when they are not needed in its Wi-Fi security guidance.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Use guest and separate networks deliberately

Set up a guest network for visitors if your router supports it. Give it a separate name and password, and use it instead of sharing the main Wi-Fi credentials. The FTC says this can help keep malware on a guest’s phone or tablet from reaching devices on the primary network.

For cameras and other connected devices, consider a separate network from computers and printers. The protection depends on how the particular router implements separation, so consult its instructions rather than assuming that a guest network isolates every device from every other device. The FTC’s connected-device guidance also covers steps for protecting smart devices.

Maintain the devices connected to Wi-Fi

Router security is only one part of a secure home network. For connected devices such as cameras, televisions, and smart speakers, the FTC recommends changing default device credentials, enabling two-factor authentication when offered, checking for firmware and app updates, and disabling features you do not use. Disconnect devices that are no longer needed.

When replacing a router, compare security features—not just speed

Consider a replacement if your current router cannot provide WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal after updates. Compare the exact model’s WPA3-Personal support, update process, guest-network controls, and ability to separate connected devices. Check manufacturer documentation for the model you are considering; a Wi-Fi generation or speed label alone does not establish how long security updates will be available.

Coverage and device compatibility still matter for household use, but they are separate from security support. Verify that your devices work with the encryption mode you plan to use and that the router’s guest or separate-network features match the isolation you need.

For broader context, the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, describes cybersecurity outcomes and related requirements for consumer-grade router products. It is a product-security framework, not a consumer buying guide or evidence that a specific router meets every requirement. A Wi-Fi Alliance certificate can also document a model’s certified capabilities: for example, its record for the CradlePoint R920-C7A lists WPA3-Personal certification and is dated August 29, 2024. That certification record is an example, not a current product recommendation.
