You can restrict age-rated games, online communication and social-media posting directly on an original Nintendo Switch or through Nintendo’s free Parental Controls app. Purchases and age-based eShop visibility are separate account settings: a parent or guardian must open the Nintendo Account family group and configure the supervised child’s account. The screenshot option blocks posting captured images and videos to social media; it does not disable the Capture button, erase the album or guarantee that files cannot be moved another way. For a complete setup, configure both the console restrictions and the child-account spending/content controls.

Which Nintendo Switch controls do what?

Nintendo divides parental controls between the console and the Nintendo Account. Console controls cover software ratings, communication and posting screenshots or videos from the original Switch. They are generally console-wide, so choose settings with the youngest person who uses that console in mind. Account controls apply to one supervised Nintendo Account and govern purchases, automatic renewals and age-based eShop content. A console PIN does not replace the account-level spending restriction.

Concern Where to configure it What it actually does
Game ratings Switch System Settings or Parental Controls app Blocks software above the selected age/rating threshold.
Chat and messages Switch restriction settings or app Restricts supported in-game communication; individual games can expose separate social options.
Posting captures Switch restriction settings or app Restricts sharing screenshots and videos to social media from the original Switch.
Purchases and auto-renewals Nintendo Account family-group settings Disables purchases for the selected supervised account, including Nintendo Store orders under Nintendo’s current US instructions.
eShop age visibility Nintendo Account family-group settings Limits age-based content shown to the supervised account; it is separate from blocking play.

Nintendo’s parent guidance and setup pages are collected at Nintendo’s parental-controls hub. Menu names can vary slightly by system software, region and whether the console is an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED. These models use the original-Switch control path; do not assume that Switch 2 menus or GameChat safeguards are identical.

How do I set parental controls on the original Switch without a phone?

You can establish the basic restrictions entirely on the console. The phone app is optional for these controls, but it adds daily play-time limits, activity reports and an Allow List. This is useful if you want a bedtime schedule, a record of which software was used or a specific title approved despite a general rating rule.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll to Parental Controls, then choose Parental Controls Settings.
  3. When asked how to set controls, press X to continue without linking the smart-device app.
  4. Select Restriction Level.
  5. Choose Child, Pre-Teen, Teen or Custom Settings.
  6. Save the selection and create a four- to eight-digit PIN. Do not share the PIN with the child; anyone who knows it can change or temporarily bypass the restrictions.

The preset levels are shortcuts for Nintendo’s rating rules. Custom Settings lets you change software, communication and social-posting controls independently. If the console is registered to a different region, check which rating organization appears before choosing a threshold; the labels may not be ESRB labels.

Write the PIN somewhere the supervising adult can retrieve it, but do not store it where the child normally uses the console. Before finishing, test the restriction from the child’s usual profile. Testing while signed in as the parent can make a rule appear ineffective because the settings are intended for the supervised use of the console or account.

How do I block games by ESRB rating?

Open System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings > Restriction Level, then select a preset or Custom Settings. Under Restricted Software, select the highest rating the child may use. Nintendo’s US presets work as follows:

Preset Blocked ESRB categories in the US Typical use
Child Everyone 10+, Teen and Mature Young children
Pre-Teen Teen and Mature Children allowed to play E and E10+ software
Teen Mature Teenagers who should not launch M-rated software
Custom Settings Whatever rating limit you select Families needing a specific boundary

These are Nintendo’s configuration thresholds, not statistics about what children generally play. A rating restriction prevents launching software above the selected level, but it does not automatically hide every age-inappropriate listing in the eShop. Configure the account’s age-based content restriction separately if you also want the store view narrowed.

When the Parental Controls app is linked, its Allow List can exempt a chosen title from the software-rating restriction. That exception does not remove a daily play-time limit: if the app says the child’s time is over, the allowed game is still subject to the schedule. An Allow List is therefore a title-by-title exception, not a way to create a second child profile with a different daily schedule.

Rating controls also do not evaluate every feature of a game for you. A title that passes the age threshold may still include voice chat, text chat, friend requests, teams or user-generated content. Check the game’s own communication and account options before allowing it.

How can I turn off chat and other communication?

Set Communicating with Others (also shown as In-Game Communication with Others) to Restricted. Nintendo describes this as blocking open exchanges such as chat and messages, with per-game controls available where a title exposes its own communication settings.

  1. Open System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings.
  2. Choose Custom Settings if you need to change communication without changing the game-rating level.
  3. Set Communicating with Others or In-Game Communication with Others to Restricted.
  4. Check the individual game’s own options for voice chat, text chat, friend requests, teams or user-generated content. Keep those settings restricted as well when the title provides them.

One Switch setting should not be treated as a universal block for every service used on another device. Nintendo directs parents to the smart device’s own settings when managing the separate Nintendo Switch App. The app’s voice-chat feature is available only to eligible players using supported original-Switch games, so review both the console game and the phone or tablet if your child uses that service.

If communication works in one game after you set the console option, first confirm the child is using the same console and profile you configured. Then inspect that game’s specific social settings and any Nintendo Switch App session. The console control is a broad restriction for supported original-Switch communication, not a promise that every third-party service, external messaging app or separate device is governed by it.

Can I stop my child taking screenshots?

Not with the documented parental-control switch. The relevant setting is Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media, and setting it to Restricted blocks the social-sharing action from the original Switch. It does not promise to disable pressing the Capture button, viewing every image in the Album, deleting files or transferring an image by another method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings.
  2. Choose Custom Settings if necessary.
  3. Set Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media to Restricted.
  4. Save and confirm with the PIN.

Nintendo also states that videos captured in rating-restricted software cannot be viewed in the Album. That is a software-rating behavior, not evidence that all captures are disabled. If you need stronger privacy, combine the posting restriction with supervision of the child’s Nintendo Account, linked social accounts and any phone or computer used to move files.

The practical question is what you are trying to prevent. If the concern is a child publishing an image directly from the console, the social-posting restriction addresses that documented action. If the concern is possession of images, viewing the Album, or sending a file through a phone, computer, messaging service or linked account, those are separate paths that require supervision outside this one setting.

How do I block Nintendo eShop purchases?

Purchases are controlled from the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account family group, not by the console PIN. Sign in to Nintendo Account with the parent or guardian account, select the family group, open the supervised child’s account and change Spending Restrictions.

  1. Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account.
  2. Open the Family group.
  3. Select the supervised child’s account.
  4. Open Spending Restrictions.
  5. Disable purchases and automatic renewals, then save.

Nintendo’s current US instructions say this restriction applies to purchases and auto-renewals on Switch, Switch 2 and Nintendo Store, including Nintendo Store physical orders for that supervised account. It is account-specific: another adult account in the family group is not automatically blocked.

For a child who should receive a particular title without browsing or buying freely, a parent can choose a physical Nintendo Switch game card, such as a packaged edition of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, after checking its rating and features. A game card does not enforce spending, communication or screenshot rules; those remain parental-control settings. Search for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Nintendo Switch physical game card when comparing retailers, and verify that the edition and rating suit the child.

Do not confuse a spending block with a guarantee that no software can ever appear on the console. Nintendo’s Japan-region instructions say that its purchase restriction does not prevent downloading free software or demos or redeeming software codes. That is regional guidance, not a confirmed rule for every US-account route, so describe the exception carefully and supervise codes, free downloads and other accounts separately.

How do I hide age-inappropriate eShop content?

In the same supervised-account area, configure Age-Based Content Restrictions separately from Spending Restrictions. The age setting limits content that the child’s account can see based on age. The spending setting blocks transactions. Use both when the goal is “do not show unsuitable listings” and “do not buy anything.”

A game can therefore be blocked in two different ways: the console may prevent launching a title above the selected rating, while the account may prevent the child from seeing or purchasing age-inappropriate eShop content. Neither setting should be assumed to cover the other. A child might be unable to launch a game already installed while still seeing a listing, or might not see a listing while another account can launch the same software.

What changes when I use the Parental Controls app?

The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is the better route when you need schedules and reporting. After linking the app, you can set daily play-time limits, bedtime schedules, activity reports and an Allow List in addition to the basic game, communication and posting restrictions.

Changes made in the app take effect when the console connects online. If a new rule seems absent, connect the Switch to the internet, open the app and verify that the intended console and child profile are selected. A child who uses more than one Switch needs each console configured; the app does not turn one console’s local settings into a universal rule for every device.

The app is not required just to set the basic rating, communication or original-Switch social-posting controls. Conversely, using the console alone will not give you the app’s activity reports or time-management features. Decide whether you need a simple local lock or ongoing scheduling and review before choosing the setup route.

Which restrictions affect everyone on the console?

Most original-Switch console restrictions are device-wide. Anyone using that Switch can encounter the same software-rating, communication and social-posting limits. If siblings have different ages, a single console-level rule must be chosen for the youngest user, or a parent must supervise use and adjust the setting when appropriate.

Spending Restrictions and Age-Based Content Restrictions are different: they attach to the selected supervised Nintendo Account. A child signing in with another account may not receive the same account-level limits, so review every account in the family group and avoid sharing the parent account.

What are the common failure modes?

  • The child can still see a game in the eShop: software-rating restriction and eShop visibility are separate. Configure Age-Based Content Restrictions on the supervised account.
  • The child can still buy something: confirm that Spending Restrictions were saved on the correct supervised account. A console PIN alone is not a purchase block.
  • Chat still works in one game: inspect that game’s own communication options and any separate phone-based Nintendo Switch App use.
  • The child can still press Capture: that is expected. The restriction concerns posting screenshots or videos to social media, not taking or deleting captures.
  • App changes have not appeared: connect the Switch online, confirm the app is linked to the intended console and wait for synchronization.
  • A rating label looks unfamiliar: verify the console region and selected rating organization before choosing a threshold.
  • A restricted game still launches: confirm the child is using the supervised profile and that the PIN has not been entered to temporarily bypass a rule.
  • One child is restricted while another is not: check whether the difference comes from account-level settings; console restrictions normally affect everyone using that device.
  • A title was approved but time limits still stop it: an Allow List exception affects the rating restriction, not the app’s daily play-time schedule.

Does Switch 2 use the same chat and screenshot controls?

No. Do not copy original-Switch directions to Switch 2 GameChat. Switch 2 GameChat has separate app-managed safeguards, and Switch 2 does not post screenshots directly to social media in the same way as the original Switch. This guide’s communication and social-posting paths describe the original Switch family; consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions for GameChat-specific controls.

The distinction matters when a household owns both generations. Configure each console’s local restrictions, then check the relevant Nintendo Account settings and the smart-device controls used for any companion service. A setting that describes original-Switch social posting should not be presented as a Switch 2 capture or GameChat control.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Identify every person and Nintendo Account using the console.
  2. On the original Switch, set the rating threshold under Restricted Software.
  3. Set Communicating with Others to Restricted, then inspect individual games.
  4. Set Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media to Restricted if social sharing is the concern.
  5. Create a private four- to eight-digit PIN.
  6. In the parent Nintendo Account family group, select the supervised child and disable Spending Restrictions; configure Age-Based Content Restrictions separately.
  7. Link the Parental Controls app if you need schedules, reports or an Allow List.
  8. Reconnect the console online and verify each rule using the child’s account, not the parent account.
  9. Repeat the review after adding a new console, account, game or companion chat service.

How we interpret Nintendo’s controls

The key selection criteria are scope and outcome: whether a setting applies to the whole console or one account, whether it blocks play or only store visibility, whether it restricts communication in a particular game or every service, and whether it stops sharing rather than capture itself. Those distinctions prevent the most common overpromises about “turning off screenshots,” “blocking all chat” or “locking the eShop.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Nintendo Switch parental-control PIN be reset if I forget it?

Use Nintendo’s official forgotten-PIN recovery process from the console’s parental-controls screen or contact Nintendo Support if the recovery information is unavailable. Do not guess repeatedly, because temporary lockouts can follow failed attempts.

Do parental controls stop free-to-play games and demos from downloading?

The US spending guidance concerns purchases and auto-renewals, while Nintendo’s Japan guidance notes that its purchase restriction does not prevent downloading free software or demos or redeeming software codes. Treat that exception as region-specific and do not assume a spending block prevents every route by which software can appear.

Can I set different game limits for two children sharing one Switch?

The main rating, communication and posting restrictions are console-wide, so they do not create independent local profiles with different thresholds. Account-level spending and age-based eShop restrictions are selected per supervised Nintendo Account.

Will an Allow List bypass a child’s daily play-time limit?

No. The app’s Allow List can exempt a selected title from the software-rating restriction, but Nintendo’s controls still apply the daily play-time schedule to that title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does blocking social-media posting protect screenshots sent through a phone or computer?

No. The documented setting covers the original Switch’s social-sharing action. Review linked accounts, messaging apps and devices separately if images can be transferred by another route.

Are the rating presets the same in every country?

No. The Child, Pre-Teen and Teen thresholds listed here are Nintendo’s US configuration using ESRB categories. Check the rating organization shown on a console configured for another region before selecting a limit.

Do I need the phone app to block games, chat or social posting?

No. Those basic original-Switch restrictions can be configured on the console. The app is needed for features such as daily play-time limits, activity reports and its Allow List.

Why can a child still use a different account after I set spending restrictions?

Spending and age-based content restrictions attach to the selected supervised Nintendo Account. Review the family group and avoid allowing the child to use an adult account that does not have those limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the screenshot restriction delete existing images?

No. It addresses posting screenshots and videos to social media from the original Switch. It is not documented as a tool for deleting Album files, disabling the Capture button or blocking every transfer method.

The Bottom Line

For an original Nintendo Switch, use console Parental Controls for game ratings, communication and social-media posting. Use the parent Nintendo Account family group for spending and age-based eShop restrictions, and use the app when you need schedules or reports. Keep the PIN private, test with the supervised account and remember that restricting posting is not the same as disabling screenshots.
