You can listen offline on an iPhone without subscribing by buying songs or albums from the iTunes Store, redownloading eligible music you previously bought, or syncing music files you already own from a Mac or Windows computer. Finish the download or sync while you’re online, then disconnect from the internet and test playback before you rely on it.
What are the no-subscription ways to listen offline?
There are two practical ways to put music on an iPhone without an Apple Music subscription: obtain it as a separate store purchase, or transfer files that you already own. A previous purchase can also be downloaded again, so it is useful to check your purchase history before paying a second time.

All three routes put playable audio on the iPhone. The important difference is where the music comes from. A store purchase is a new transaction for a particular song or album. A redownload uses the Apple Account and purchase that you already have. Computer syncing moves your existing collection from a Mac or Windows PC to the phone.
| Route | What you need | Cost and availability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy from the iTunes Store | An iPhone with access to the local iTunes Store, plus an Apple Account for purchases and downloads | You pay per song or album. Titles and availability vary by country or region. | You want specific music and do not already have the files. |
| Redownload a previous purchase | The account used for the purchase and an authorized device | No new purchase is needed for an eligible prior purchase, but availability is not guaranteed for every item or region. Apple says previously purchased items can be downloaded to up to 10 authorized computers and devices. | You bought the music before and need another copy on this iPhone. |
| Sync files from a computer | Music files you already own, a Mac or Windows computer, and a compatible connection for initial setup | There may be no new music purchase if you already have the files. Setup requires a computer; after USB setup, Wi-Fi syncing can be enabled. | Your music collection is stored on a computer. |
Apple’s iPhone music guidance covers store purchases and computer transfers. The computer app depends on its operating system: Music on macOS Catalina (10.15) or later, iTunes on macOS Mojave (10.14) or earlier, and iTunes or the Apple Devices app on Windows. Features and store catalogs can vary by country or region.

How do I buy music and download it on my iPhone?
An iTunes Store purchase is a separate purchase of a song or album, not a download from the Apple Music subscription catalog. Buy and download the music while online; once the files are on the iPhone, you can play them without a connection.
- Open the iTunes Store on the iPhone and search for the song or album you want.
- Check the listing in your local store. Not every title is necessarily offered in every country or region.
- Purchase the track or album and let the download finish while the iPhone is online.
- Confirm it is available on the phone by finding it in your music library and starting playback before disconnecting.
The store listing is the practical source for the current title and price in your location. There is no universal price or catalog size that applies to every country, and a song that appears in one storefront may not appear in another. If an album is offered in both individual tracks and an album edition, choose the version that matches what you intend to keep offline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leave the iPhone connected to the internet until the purchase has finished downloading. Starting a purchase is not the same as having a complete offline copy: a pending or interrupted download may not play when the phone is disconnected. After the download, open the item from the phone’s music library rather than relying only on the store’s purchase screen.
Buying individual tracks can be economical when you need only a few songs, while buying an album may be simpler when you want the whole release. In either case, you pay for the selected items instead of paying for continuing access to a subscription catalog. The purchase route is therefore suited to a permanent personal library, subject to the item remaining available for download in your region.
How do I redownload music I bought before?
If you previously purchased music, check whether it is available to download again to an authorized device. Use the Apple Account associated with the original purchase, and complete the download while online. This can be useful after replacing an iPhone, restoring one, or removing music to free storage.
- On the iPhone, open the iTunes Store and look for the account’s purchased music.
- Locate the song or album and choose its download option if one is available.
- Wait for the download to complete, then test playback while offline.
Sign in with the account that actually made the purchase. Using a different Apple Account can make a legitimate purchase appear to be missing. If you use more than one account in your household, identify which account paid for the item before troubleshooting the phone.

Apple’s stated limit for downloading previously purchased items is up to 10 authorized computers and devices. That is an authorization allowance, not a promise that every old title will always be downloadable. A title may no longer be offered in a particular storefront, so check the item in the local store rather than assuming that a past purchase guarantees a current redownload.
If a purchase is listed but the download has not completed, stay online and wait for the transfer to finish. Then locate the actual track or album in the iPhone’s library and play it once. A visible purchase record by itself does not confirm that the audio file is stored locally.
How do I sync music files from a Mac or Windows computer?
Use computer syncing when your music files are already on a computer. This may avoid a new music purchase, but it does require access to the computer that holds the collection and an initial connection to the iPhone. Apple’s documented Mac workflow uses Finder on macOS Catalina or later; Windows users can use iTunes or the Apple Devices app.
On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible USB cable. The cable must fit the ports on both devices; the exact connector depends on your models.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar. If prompted, follow the on-screen steps to trust or authorize the connection.
- Select Music for the iPhone, then enable the option to sync music.
- Choose the music to sync if the interface offers a selection, then apply the changes or start syncing.
- Wait until syncing finishes before disconnecting the iPhone. Check the music library on the phone and play a track to confirm it arrived.
Syncing is a transfer from the computer’s library, not a streaming operation. Keep the computer available until the process reports completion. Disconnecting early can leave some selections absent even when other tracks have arrived. If you are sending only selected playlists, albums, or artists, review the selection before applying the sync so that the phone receives the music you expect.
After connecting by USB, Finder can also be configured to show the iPhone over Wi-Fi. Once that setup is complete, the computer and iPhone can sync while connected to the same network; a cable is not required for each later sync. The first setup still normally uses a wired connection, and Wi-Fi syncing is useful only while the computer and iPhone share a network.
On an older Mac
On macOS Mojave (10.14) or earlier, use iTunes rather than Finder for the computer-sync workflow. Connect the iPhone, select it in iTunes, choose the music-sync controls, and apply the sync. Labels and screens can vary by software version, but the purpose is the same: select the iPhone, enable music syncing, choose what to transfer, and wait for completion.

On Windows
Apple identifies iTunes and the Apple Devices app as options for syncing music from a Windows computer. Connect the iPhone, open the app you are using, select the iPhone, choose its music-sync controls, and start the sync. Follow the prompts shown for that app and let the transfer finish before disconnecting.
A compatible data-transfer cable is conditional, not universal. The correct cable depends on the ports on the specific iPhone and computer, so do not buy one based only on the phone’s name. After wired setup, Wi-Fi syncing can reduce the need to connect the cable for every later transfer.

If the computer app does not offer the expected controls, make sure you are using the app appropriate for your operating system and version. A missing track can also mean the wrong iPhone was selected or that the sync was interrupted before it finished.
How can I confirm the music will play without internet?
Do not rely only on seeing a title in a store or on a computer: confirm the completed download or sync on the iPhone itself. An offline test catches incomplete transfers before a flight, commute, or trip.
- While online, complete the purchase download, redownload, or computer sync.
- Open the iPhone’s music library and find the exact song or album you intend to play.
- Start playback to confirm the item opens on the phone.
- Turn on Airplane Mode, or otherwise disconnect Wi-Fi and cellular data, and try playback again.
Test more than one track if you transferred an album or a large selection. An item that starts playing in Airplane Mode has demonstrated that the phone can access it locally. If playback fails, reconnect and check whether the download or sync actually completed. For a computer transfer, return to the relevant sync app and confirm the iPhone is selected and the sync has finished. For a purchase, check the item’s availability and download status in the local store.
Perform the test before leaving home, not after you have lost coverage. It also gives you time to remove an incomplete item, repeat the sync, or choose another available copy. Keep the phone charged while a large purchase or transfer is running, and avoid disconnecting until the operating system indicates that the operation is done.

Does an Apple Music download count as owning music?
No. Downloading a song from the Apple Music subscription catalog is part of the Apple Music workflow; it is not the same as buying that song from the iTunes Store or transferring a music file you already own. Downloading subscription catalog items helps make them available offline while that access is available, but it does not create a permanent purchased copy.
If you want a no-subscription copy, use the iTunes Store purchase route or sync an existing file. Apple’s iPhone guidance treats adding and downloading Apple Music catalog items as part of Apple Music, while separately describing store purchases and computer syncing. Do not confuse a downloaded icon in a subscription library with a separately purchased item in the iTunes Store.
What are the costs and setup tradeoffs?
A store purchase has an upfront cost for each song or album. The exact amount is shown by the local storefront, and availability can differ by country or region. Redownloading an eligible prior purchase does not require buying that item again, although the account and authorization conditions still apply.
Syncing files you already own may require no new music purchase. Its cost is mainly the time and equipment needed for setup: a Mac or Windows computer containing the files, the appropriate software, and a compatible connection for the first setup. A cable is optional after Wi-Fi syncing has been configured, but the initial wired connection and later network conditions still matter.
Choose based on what you already have. Buying is simpler when you need a few titles and have no computer library. Redownloading is the first check when you paid for the music previously. Syncing is practical for a larger personal collection already organized on a computer, especially when you want to move multiple selections at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which route should I choose?
- Choose a store purchase if you do not already have the music files and want selected songs or albums without a subscription.
- Check prior purchases first if you have bought the music before; an eligible redownload may avoid buying it again.
- Choose computer syncing if the files are already in your collection and you can use a Mac or Windows computer to transfer them.
These methods avoid needing a streaming subscription or a separate third-party service. Availability, app labels, and connection details depend on the store region, computer operating system, and device ports. Apple’s instructions are procedural; they do not mean every title is sold in every country or that every old purchase is still eligible for redownload.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I redownload an iTunes Store purchase after changing iPhones?
Often, if the purchase is still available and the new iPhone is authorized for the account used to buy it. Apple’s stated allowance covers up to 10 authorized computers and devices, but it does not guarantee that every title can always be downloaded again.
Why can’t I find a song I used to have in the iTunes Store?
A store listing or redownload may not be available for every title in every country or region. Check the local store for the item rather than assuming that a past purchase guarantees a currently available download.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I download Apple Music songs and keep them after canceling?
An Apple Music catalog download is subscription access, not an individual music purchase. For access that is not tied to that catalog subscription, buy the track separately or use a music file you already own.
Do I need a computer to listen offline without a subscription?
No. You can buy available songs or albums directly in the iTunes Store on the iPhone, or redownload eligible prior purchases. A Mac or Windows computer is needed only for the computer-sync route.
Can I sync music without plugging in every time?
After the initial USB setup, Finder can be configured to show the iPhone over Wi-Fi. Later syncing can then occur while the iPhone and computer are connected to the same network. The first setup still requires a compatible connection.
What if a purchase appears on my account but will not play offline?
Reconnect to the internet and confirm that the download completed on the iPhone, then open the item from the phone’s music library. If it is unavailable in the local store or only listed as a pending download, it may not be stored locally yet.

Which app syncs music from a Windows computer?
Apple identifies iTunes and the Apple Devices app as Windows options. Select the iPhone in the app, use its music-sync controls, and wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting.
What cable should I buy for syncing?
There is no single connector recommendation for every setup. The cable must match the ports on both the iPhone and computer. A cable is mainly needed for initial setup if you plan to use Wi-Fi syncing afterward.
The Bottom Line
For subscription-free offline listening, buy the song or album in the iTunes Store, redownload an eligible earlier purchase, or sync music files already stored on a Mac or Windows PC. Finish the operation online and verify playback in Airplane Mode before you travel.
