Google Messages can help you draft replies using AI, so you spend less time staring at a blinking cursor and more time sending the message you actually mean. Depending on your device, region, and app version, you’ll see options such as AI-assisted writing, suggested drafts, or “help me write” style prompts in the compose area.
This guide walks you through enabling the feature, using it to write texts, and fixing the most common issues when the AI option doesn’t show up. If you’re on iPhone or your account doesn’t have access yet, there are workable alternatives too.

What it means to let Google Messages write texts with AI
When AI writing is available in Google Messages, you can request a draft message while you’re composing. Instead of manually typing every word, you describe what you want (tone, intent, key details), and AI generates text you can edit and send.

Prerequisites (what you need before the AI option appears)
AI writing in Google Messages isn’t guaranteed for every account or device yet. Before you troubleshoot, confirm these basics.
1) Use an Android device that supports Google Messages AI features
As of current rollout patterns, AI writing support is primarily on Android. If you’re using iPhone with the Messages app, you may not see the same AI compose tools. Use the alternatives section if you’re on iOS.
2) Update Google Messages
Check Google Messages in the Play Store and ensure you’re on the latest version available for your device. Many AI features show up only after an app update.
3) Be signed into a Google Account
AI features generally require a Google Account sign-in in the Messages app and/or system services. If you recently switched accounts, sign out/in and relaunch Messages.
4) Confirm Gemini/AI features are enabled where applicable
Depending on your region and rollout, the AI writing tool may depend on Gemini settings, system-level AI options, or personalization features in Google apps. You’ll often see the toggle in Google settings.
Enable AI writing in Google Messages
If the feature exists for your account, the steps below will help you turn it on. Menu names can vary slightly by Android version and device skin, but the path is usually consistent.
Check your app version
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Messages (or “Messages” by Google).
- Tap the app listing and check the Version number (or tap Update if shown).
- After updating, open Messages and test whether the AI option appears in the chat composer.
Confirm Gemini or AI features are enabled at the account level
Look for Gemini-related settings in your Google ecosystem. The exact label can differ by device, but you’re aiming for AI features that power drafting and suggestions.
- Open the Google app (or Settings on your phone and search for “Gemini” or “AI”).
- Open Settings and find Gemini or AI features.
- Turn on options related to assistant/drafting/suggestions if you see them.
- Reboot once, then reopen Google Messages to refresh feature availability.
Turn on the AI writing option inside Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap the profile icon or three-dot menu (often top-right).
- Go to Settings.
- Search within settings for terms like AI, assistant, drafting, or help me write.
- Enable the toggle if present.
If you don’t see any AI-related setting in Messages, the feature may not be enabled for your account/region yet, or you need a newer app version.
Use AI to write a text in Google Messages (step-by-step)
Once the feature is available, you’ll typically see an AI control in the message compose field. The most common UI patterns are an “AI draft” button, a “magic” icon, or suggestions that appear above the keyboard.

For a new message
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap Start chat or select a contact.
- In the compose area, look for an AI icon/button or a drafting option.
- Enter your intent (for example: “Write a friendly text asking to reschedule dinner to Friday evening. Keep it short.”).
- Review the generated draft.
- Edit anything that sounds off, then tap Send.
For an existing conversation
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap the message box to bring up the keyboard and composer controls.
- Tap the AI writing control (if visible).
- Describe what you want the reply to accomplish (polite tone, apology, timeline, confirmation, etc.).
- Choose the AI draft (or regenerate if your first version isn’t right).
- Make small edits for names, times, and specifics, then send.
Refine tone, length, and intent
You’ll get better results if your prompt includes constraints. Instead of “write a text,” try “write a text that is firm but polite, 1–2 sentences, includes Tuesday at 3 PM, and avoids emojis.”
Most AI drafting tools respond well to these three knobs: tone, length, and content requirements.
Prompt examples you can copy
- Polite scheduling: “Write a friendly text to reschedule our meeting. Apologize briefly, suggest Friday at 2 PM, and ask which time works.”
- Short and clear: “Draft a 1-sentence message confirming the appointment and asking for any paperwork I should bring.”
- Boundary setting: “Write a firm but respectful response. Tell them you can’t do Monday, offer Wednesday or Thursday, and keep it under 2 sentences.”
- Follow-up: “Generate a concise follow-up text after no response. Mention I’m checking in and ask if they received my last message.”
Make AI outputs safer and more accurate
AI drafts can be good, but they’re not a guarantee. Treat the AI output as a starting point, not a final truth.
Review before sending
Check names, dates, times, locations, and any numeric details. If you see anything vague (like “soon” or “tomorrow morning”), rewrite those parts.
Use specific details in your prompt
When your prompt includes the essentials, AI is more likely to produce a message that matches your situation. Include: what happened, what you want, and the exact constraints.
Avoid sensitive data in prompts
If you’re drafting about medical, legal, or financial details, be cautious about how much you paste into prompts. A safer approach is to keep prompts general and insert sensitive specifics only after you review the draft.

When AI writing doesn’t work, the issue is usually one of: missing feature rollout, outdated app, wrong settings, or a temporary account restriction.
AI writing option is missing
If you don’t see the AI control in the composer, try this checklist in order.
- Update Messages: Update Google Messages from the Play Store and restart the app.
- Restart your phone: A reboot forces feature flags to refresh.
- Check Google account: Ensure you’re signed into the same Google Account you use for other Gemini features.
- Look for language mismatch: AI options may appear only in certain languages. Try switching system language temporarily or ensure your keyboard language matches.
- Clear app cache: Android > Settings > Apps > Messages > Storage > Clear cache. (Avoid clearing data unless you have to.)
- Reinstall Messages: If the toggle still doesn’t show, uninstall and reinstall the latest version.
If it still doesn’t appear, your account may not have the rollout yet. Use the alternatives section to get the same workflow via Gemini and copy/paste.

The AI writes but won’t send (sending issues)
Drafting and sending are separate paths. If AI generates text but Send fails, check basics:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Verify your network connection (switch Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data).
- Confirm you’re using RCS (if your chat expects RCS). Messages often behaves differently depending on RCS status.
- Check if the recipient’s thread is blocked or if there’s a delivery restriction.
- Force close Messages and reopen, then retry the send.
Wrong language or tone
If the draft sounds off, regenerate after adjusting your prompt with explicit tone and length. Also check your keyboard language and your system language.
Messages feature says it needs an update or permission
Common fixes:
- Update Google Messages again (sometimes staged updates lag).
- Check Android app permissions for Messages (Settings > Apps > Messages > Permissions). Re-enable anything disabled for microphone/accessibility that the app requests.
- Update Google Play services if your phone prompts you.
Chat context isn’t being used
Some AI tools rely more on your prompt than on the thread history. If context is missing, include a short recap in your prompt: what you want to say and any key constraints.
Alternatives if you cannot use AI writing in Google Messages
If you’re on iPhone, or the AI option is simply not available for your account, you can still get near-identical results with a copy/paste workflow.
Use Gemini separately, then paste into Messages
Open Gemini, ask it to draft the message with the exact constraints you want, then paste the result into Google Messages.
- Open Gemini.
- Prompt: include tone, length, and the exact details (dates/times/names).
- Copy the final draft.
- Open Google Messages and paste into the composer.
- Edit quickly, then tap Send.
Use Gboard or Android assistant writing tools
If you have writing suggestions in Gboard, you can generate drafts in the keyboard environment and then send from Messages.
- Open Messages and tap the message field.
- Use the keyboard’s writing/suggestion feature (if available).
- Generate a draft, revise it in the keyboard field.
- Send from Messages.
Use the Messages web workflow (copy/paste)
On desktop, you can generate text in a browser tool and paste into Messages for web.
- Open messages.google.com (Messages for web).
- Generate the draft in Gemini or your AI writing tool.
- Copy the draft on desktop.
- Paste into the web composer and click Send.
Google Messages AI vs. Smart Reply (what’s the difference?)
Smart Reply typically offers short, one-tap suggestions based on the last message. It’s fast, but it’s limited to brief responses.
AI writing is more flexible: you can request specific tone, length, and content rules, and you can regenerate longer drafts.

Privacy and permissions you should understand
AI drafting involves sending some of your prompt text to an AI service to generate content. You still control what you type, and you should avoid including sensitive personal data unless you’re comfortable with how your data is handled.
What data the model needs vs. what it shouldn’t
At minimum, the system needs your prompt/instructions. It may also use conversation context depending on the feature. You can reduce risk by keeping prompts general and adding sensitive specifics only after you generate a draft.
How to control visibility and personalization
- Check Google app settings for AI personalization or Gemini controls.
- Review Messages settings for any “assistant” or “suggestions” toggles.
- Review Android privacy settings if the feature requires special permissions.
FAQ
Is AI text writing available on iPhone in Google Messages?
Availability varies by rollout and platform. Many AI writing drafts are Android-first. If you don’t see the AI compose button in iPhone Google Messages, use the Gemini copy/paste method instead.
Does AI writing work for SMS and RCS?
It depends on your chat type and device support. In practice, RCS (chat) tends to have richer messaging features. If AI drafting works but sending fails, check network and RCS status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I use AI drafts for personal and business texts?
Yes, but you should review carefully. Business messages should always be checked for accuracy (names, addresses, meeting times) and compliance with your organization’s communication guidelines.
Will AI remember what I wrote previously?
That depends on your account settings and how the feature is implemented. If you’re concerned, avoid sharing sensitive details in prompts and review Google and Gemini personalization settings.
What’s the best prompt style if I want a specific tone?
State the intent and constraints in one line: tone + length + required details. For example: “Polite and short, 2 sentences, confirm tomorrow at 6 PM, and ask if they need anything else.”
Bottom Line
To let Google Messages write texts with AI, you need the right app version and feature availability, then you turn on AI drafting in Messages (when present) and compose with a clear prompt. In most cases, you’ll get the best results by specifying tone, length, and exact details—and always reviewing before you send.
