As of October 30, 2026, the best legal option depends on whether you want to play immediately or own a standalone copy. Play the original Nintendo 64 game today on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. If you want the rebuilt modern edition, preorder its separate physical or digital Switch 2 release for November 5, 2026; it is not playable before that launch. A used Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge remains the practical handheld route, while an authentic N64 cartridge or GameCube bonus disc suits original-hardware players and collectors.
These are different releases and access models: a subscription library, a new standalone remake, an earlier 3DS remake, and legacy physical editions. Choose based on when you want to play, which console you own, whether you need permanent ownership, and how much you value original presentation, portability or Master Quest.

How can I play Ocarina of Time today without buying old hardware?
Use the Nintendo 64 Classics application included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in that catalog for both Switch and Switch 2. This is the original N64 game running through Nintendo’s Classics service, not the upcoming Switch 2 remake.
The membership is an access license rather than a permanent game purchase. Nintendo’s support guidance says there are no plans to make the Classics games available outside the Nintendo Switch Online service. If the membership expires, the software and saves remain on the console, but launching the game requires renewing the appropriate membership.

What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console connected to a Nintendo Account.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; basic Nintendo Switch Online does not include the Nintendo 64 library.
- The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application downloaded from the Nintendo Switch Online area or the eShop.
Nintendo’s U.S. storefront snapshot lists the individual Expansion Pack at $49.99 per year and the family plan at $79.99 per year for up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Those are membership prices, not prices for an Ocarina of Time license, and Nintendo can change them.
How to start the N64 version
- Open Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo Switch Online section on your Switch or Switch 2.
- Find the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application and download it while signed in to the account that has Expansion Pack access.
- Launch the application and select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
- Use the same account whenever you return to the game; the application checks that the required membership is active.
Nintendo says Classics software can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days before the console must reconnect for membership verification. Plan an online check before a longer trip. Saved data stays on the console after a membership lapse and becomes usable again when you renew.

Is Ocarina of Time included with regular Nintendo Switch Online?
No. The N64 game is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, the higher tier. A basic Nintendo Switch Online subscription does not unlock the Nintendo 64 Classics catalog.
Do not confuse downloading the Classics application with buying the game. The application is the library shell; access to Ocarina of Time depends on the active Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s support page describes the library as a service and states that its games are not planned for individual sale: There are no plans to make the games available outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
That statement applies to the Classics versions, not to Nintendo’s separately sold 2026 remake.
Can I buy the original Switch version instead of subscribing?
Not as a current Nintendo digital purchase. Nintendo’s supported Switch route for the original N64 edition is the Expansion Pack catalog. If you want a standalone modern purchase, the relevant product is the rebuilt Switch 2 game releasing November 5, 2026.

You can also obtain a physical legacy copy, such as an N64 cartridge or a GameCube bonus disc, but those require their original compatible hardware. They are not Switch or Switch 2 game cards and do not convert into a digital entitlement.

Nintendo’s physical and digital product pages both list November 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2. As of this article’s October 2026 information date, that launch has not occurred, so treat listings as preorders and do not expect to play before release day.
Nintendo describes this edition as “A classic tale, built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” It is a separate game from the N64 Classics release, with:
- Overhauled visuals and symphonic music.
- Voice acting, expanded dialogue and additional scenes.
- Updated camera and movement controls.
- Traditional button input for melodies.
- Sound recognition that can respond to humming or an instrument near the Switch 2 microphone; no ocarina accessory is required.
Nintendo’s product listing estimates a 27 GB digital file size, explicitly subject to change before or at preorder. The U.S. Zelda storefront shows a $59.99 regular price in its 2026 snapshot. The first physical print run has textured-foil packaging while supplies last, so packaging is a limited-print feature rather than a permanent specification.
Physical or digital: which Switch 2 edition should you preorder?

Neither edition is included with Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 system. The themed console listing explicitly says the game is not included, so buying that hardware alone does not provide the remake or the Classics membership.

Is Ocarina of Time 3D still available after the 3DS eShop closure?
Yes, but the realistic new-purchase path is a legitimate secondhand cartridge, not the closed eShop. Nintendo stopped new Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop purchases on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says people who bought software previously can redownload it and obtain updates for the foreseeable future, but that is not a promise of indefinite availability.
Ocarina of Time 3D is the earlier Nintendo 3DS remake and should not be confused with the November 2026 Switch 2 project. Nintendo’s packaged-edition announcement describes remodeled graphics, touch-screen item management, gyro aiming, Master Quest and Boss Challenge.
What to check before buying a used 3DS cartridge
- Confirm that the listing is the actual Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge, not a case, download code or reproduction.
- Check that you own a compatible 3DS-family system and that the cartridge’s region and language meet your needs. Nintendo’s cited packaged announcement is European evidence and does not establish current U.S. stock or universal regional compatibility.
- Ask for clear photographs of the cartridge label and contacts, and review the seller’s return policy.
- Expect condition, completeness and price to vary; official Nintendo sources do not establish a current used-market price.
How do I buy and play the original N64 or GameCube editions?
For original-hardware play, buy an authentic used release and the matching console or compatible hardware. This route gives you physical ownership of that copy but requires more space, maintenance and secondhand-market judgment than the Switch service.
Nintendo 64 cartridge
An authentic N64 Ocarina of Time cartridge with a functioning Nintendo 64 is the direct original presentation. Inspect the cartridge shell, label, contacts and seller return terms. A cartridge is not a Switch game card, and owning one does not authorize downloading an unrelated ROM.

Nintendo has documented a limited-edition GameCube bonus disc containing both Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest. It is especially relevant if Master Quest or collecting original Nintendo releases is your priority. You need suitable disc-playing hardware, and the disc cannot run on a Switch or Switch 2.

How to avoid counterfeit or incomplete listings
- Prefer listings that show the exact cartridge or disc rather than stock artwork alone.
- Check whether the console, game, case, manual and promotional materials are included; “complete” can mean different things to different sellers.
- Compare the product title with photographs and ask about save-battery status on an N64 cartridge.
- Use a payment method and marketplace policy that provides recourse for an item that is counterfeit or materially different from its description.

The key trade-off is access versus ownership. Expansion Pack is the fastest and simplest route but stops working when the required membership is inactive. A Switch 2, 3DS, N64 or GameCube copy is tied to hardware and physical condition, yet it does not depend on a recurring Classics subscription.

No. Nintendo’s wireless Nintendo 64 controller is optional; the N64 Classics application can be played with the standard Switch or Switch 2 controls. The controller pairs with both systems and is specifically described as suitable for Ocarina of Time, but buying it does not include the game or Expansion Pack.
Nintendo requires a paid Switch Online membership to purchase that controller directly and says its direct controller offer ships to the United States and Canada. Treat the controller and game access as separate purchases.
What should I know about legal ROMs and emulation?
This guide covers Nintendo-supported services and authentic physical copies, not a definitive legal analysis of emulator files or fan projects. Do not assume that downloading an unauthorized ROM becomes authorized merely because you own an N64 cartridge. What future Ocarina of Time products are not game copies?
Some announced or licensed products are accessories, toys or collectibles rather than ways to play the game. Nintendo lists the 1,003-piece LEGO Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle set as a model kit; its product page is at Nintendo’s store. An electronic Ocarina of Time-themed toy scheduled for November 5, 2026 is not a controller or a blow-played musical instrument. Announced Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo are planned for 2027, with Young Link’s exact date not yet announced. Nintendo has also announced a Link and Epona LEGO set and an electronic Master Sword for spring 2027. None of these products supplies the game itself.
