How to Leave the iOS Beta Program and Return to a Public iPhone Release

Turning off Beta Updates stops future beta releases but does not remove the installed beta. Learn when to use Settings, an offered update, or a computer restore.

To stop receiving iOS beta updates, turn off Beta Updates in Settings. That only stops future beta releases; it does not remove the beta already installed. To return to the current public iOS version immediately, Apple’s instructions require erasing and restoring the iPhone with a computer.

Choose how you want to leave the beta

Path What it does What you need
Turn off Beta Updates Stops future beta updates; leaves the installed iOS version in place until a later update or restore changes it. iPhone Settings
Erase and restore Returns the iPhone to the current publicly released iOS version; erases the device. A computer, a compatible cable, and recovery mode
Install an offered update Installs an update if the iPhone reports one is available because the beta has expired. The update offered on the iPhone

Turn off future beta updates

iOS 16.4 or later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Software Update.
  3. Tap Beta Updates and select Off.

This prevents the phone from receiving future beta updates. It does not downgrade the version already installed. Your iPhone remains on that version until you install a public update that is offered to it or erase and restore it.

iOS 16.3.1 or earlier

  1. Open Settings, then tap General.
  2. Tap VPN & Device Management.
  3. Select the iOS Beta Software Profile, then tap Remove Profile.

Menu labels can vary by language and later iOS versions. Apple’s full instructions are in How to uninstall iOS or iPadOS beta software.

Return to public iOS immediately with a computer

Apple states: “To remove the iOS or iPadOS beta and install the current publicly released version of iOS or iPadOS, you will need to erase and restore your device.” This process deletes the device’s contents and settings, so make sure you have an appropriate backup before starting.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  1. Use a computer running a current version of macOS, or a Windows computer with the Apple Devices app.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible cable. The connector you need depends on the iPhone and computer.
  3. Put the iPhone into recovery mode. The button sequence depends on the iPhone model; follow Apple’s recovery instructions linked from its beta removal guide.
  4. When the computer offers the choice, select Restore, not Update, and follow the prompts to erase and install the current public iOS release.
  5. Complete iPhone setup and choose a compatible backup if you have one.

Check backup compatibility before restoring

A backup made while the iPhone is running beta software may not restore to an earlier public iOS version. Apple recommends using an archived backup made before installing the beta. Its example says a backup created on iOS 18.2 beta will not restore to iOS 18.1; those version numbers illustrate compatibility, not the current iOS release.

Do not assume that every cloud-synced item is lost or that every beta-era backup is unusable in every situation. The key risk is that a backup from a newer beta system may not be compatible with the older public version you are installing.

If the beta has expired and an update is offered

If the iPhone says a software update is available because the beta has expired, Apple directs you to install the offered update. This option depends on the phone actually showing an update alert; it is separate from turning off Beta Updates and from the computer-based erase-and-restore procedure.
