YouTube 4x playback is available to Premium users on Android, iOS, and the web, although the Speed menu can vary by account, app, device, and video. The feature began as a mobile experiment in January 2025 and YouTube said it was fully available on those platforms for Premium users by September 26, 2025. Free users can generally play videos at speeds up to 2x, according to a Google statement reported by Android Authority.
To try 4x, open a video, go to Settings, choose Speed or Playback speed, and select 4x if it appears. This guide explains eligibility, platform steps, device limitations, how 4x differs from Auto speed, and when Premium may be worthwhile.

What changed and when?
On January 22, 2025, YouTube announced faster playback speeds up to 4x as a Premium mobile experiment. Its initial announcement said the experiment would be available through youtube.com/new; a YouTube support-community post described speed adjustments in 0.05x increments. YouTube later said on September 26, 2025, that faster playback speeds up to 4x were fully available to Premium users on Android, iOS, and the web.

Availability can still differ by device, account, app version, region, and content. YouTube’s original announcement and later availability update document that history.

Who can use 4x playback?
YouTube Premium is required for playback speeds above the reported free-user limit of 2x. Google’s clarification about the free-versus-Premium distinction was reported by Android Authority. Premium users can access speeds up to 4x on Android, iOS, and the web, but should check the player’s Speed menu on the device and video they use.
Premium also includes benefits such as ad-free videos, background play, downloads, and YouTube Music Premium, according to YouTube Help. Prices and offers vary by market and billing details. Check the current amount in your account’s Purchases and Memberships page rather than relying on a universal price, as YouTube Help explains.
How to turn on 4x playback
On the web
- Open a video on YouTube.
- Hover over the player and select Settings.
- Select Speed.
- Choose 4x, or use a custom-speed control if your player offers one.
This follows the general web playback-speed path in YouTube Help. The exact controls can vary with the interface.

On Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open a video in the YouTube app.
- Tap the video once to show the player controls.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Playback speed.
- Select 4x, or adjust the speed in 0.05x increments if that control is available.
The menu’s appearance can differ by app version. YouTube’s initial announcement and support-community post describe the mobile feature and fine-grained speed adjustments.
YouTube also documents a separate shortcut: clicking and holding on a video temporarily plays it at 2x; releasing returns to the previous speed. That is not a way to select persistent 4x playback. See YouTube Help for the shortcut and standard speed controls.
Does 4x work on TVs and every video?
Do not assume 4x is available on every device or video. YouTube’s general playback-speed help page warns that speed controls may not be available on all smart TVs and streaming devices. Check the actual Speed menu on the device you plan to use.

Some content or playback contexts may expose different controls, and high-speed playback can be harder to follow or less smooth on some devices. YouTube’s documented exclusions for Auto speed are not automatically exclusions for manually selected 4x; these are separate features.
Manual 4x playback vs. Auto speed
| Feature | Manual 4x playback | Auto speed |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | You choose a fixed playback speed. | YouTube adjusts playback speed automatically. |
| Speed | Premium users can select speeds up to 4x where available. | Premium users on Android can choose a baseline from 1x through 4x. |
| Availability | Android, iOS, and web, subject to device and content availability. | Currently limited to English content in the Android mobile app. |
| Content limits | Check the player menu; do not assume Auto speed restrictions apply. | YouTube lists exclusions including Shorts, premieres, livestreams, music, movies, and shows. |
| Best for | Deliberately speeding up or scanning a video. | Letting playback adjust automatically. |
These Auto speed limits and its distinction from manual playback are described on YouTube Help.
Why 4x might not appear
If the menu stops at 2x, that does not necessarily mean YouTube has removed 4x or that the player is broken. Check these possibilities:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is YouTube Premium worth it just for 4x?
Usually, 4x alone is a strong reason to subscribe only if you regularly watch long videos and speeds above 2x would meaningfully help. It may suit people who often review lectures, tutorials, interviews, podcasts, or training material. At 4x, speech can be difficult to understand, so it is more useful for scanning familiar material than learning complex details for the first time.
If you would also use Premium’s ad-free viewing, background play, downloads, or YouTube Music Premium, the combined benefits may matter more than 4x alone. If you are satisfied with speeds up to 2x, rarely watch YouTube, or mostly watch on a TV or streaming device, Premium may not be worthwhile specifically for this feature. Check your account for current local pricing and offers; YouTube says prices can vary by market and billing details.

FAQ
Is YouTube 4x playback still experimental?
It was introduced as a Premium mobile experiment in January 2025. YouTube said in September 2025 that faster playback up to 4x was fully available to Premium users on Android, iOS, and the web, so “experimental” is outdated as a general description for those platforms.
Can free YouTube users watch videos at 4x?
According to a Google statement reported by Android Authority, free users can use playback speeds up to 2x, while Premium users can access speeds up to 4x.
Is Auto speed the same as choosing 4x?
No. Manual 4x keeps the speed you select. Auto speed changes playback automatically and has narrower documented availability: Premium, English content, and the Android mobile app. YouTube also lists content exclusions for Auto speed on its help page.
