How to Compare Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for Naval Operations

A mission-first framework for comparing autonomous underwater vehicles for naval operations, with context for published figures, integration and lifecycle support.

There is no defensible single “best” naval autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) without a defined mission and comparable test data. Start by specifying the task, operating environment, payload and support concept; then compare how each complete system performs against those requirements. A published target is not a demonstrated result, and a platform’s depth or sonar figure alone does not establish its overall operational value.

Start with the mission and operating environment

Write the operational need before comparing platforms. An AUV intended for seabed search may be judged by sensor performance, coverage and navigation; one intended to protect infrastructure or support logistics may face different endurance, payload, communications and deployment demands. AUKUS’s undersea capability work identifies surveillance and reconnaissance, seabed infrastructure protection, logistics, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare and littoral operations as areas for UUV-related development. These are distinct mission areas, not interchangeable performance categories.

Make the operating conditions explicit: area and distance from launch, water depth, expected duration, environmental conditions, access to recovery support, and whether the vehicle must operate alone or alongside crewed ships and other uncrewed systems. A range or endurance figure without its payload, speed and operating assumptions cannot show whether a system can complete a particular mission.

Also distinguish an AUV from other uncrewed maritime systems. The Royal Australian Navy’s Maritime Autonomous Systems Unit announcement names the Ghost Shark XL-UUV and Speartooth LUUV alongside the Bluebottle USV. The announcement establishes program context and describes the unit’s work in doctrine, experimentation, employment, training, test and evaluation; it does not provide comparable specifications for those systems. A USV is an uncrewed surface vessel, not an underwater vehicle, so grouping all three under a broad autonomous-systems program does not make their performance directly comparable.

What should a navy compare?

Compare the vehicle as part of an operational system: payloads, software and control, launch and recovery, operating-base needs, maintenance, training and fleet integration all affect whether it can deliver the mission.

Comparison area Questions for a procurement or evaluation team
Mission fit Which task is being evaluated, in what environment, and against what operational outcome? Are the requirements for search, surveillance, infrastructure protection, mine countermeasures, logistics or another task?
Endurance and range How long can the vehicle operate and how far can it travel from launch under the specified speed, payload and environmental conditions? Does the figure include time or energy reserved for transit, mission work and recovery?
Payload and interfaces What payload mass and volume are available? Which sensors or other payloads can be integrated, and can payloads be deployed or recovered? Are interfaces documented and usable by third parties?
Depth and navigation What operating depth is stated, and what navigation performance is demonstrated for the mission? How does the vehicle manage position and uncertainty while underwater?
Autonomy and control Can it follow waypoints, avoid obstacles, maintain situational awareness, and be remotely tasked, retasked or aborted? What happens when communications are unavailable or the mission deviates from plan?
Communications and signature What communications are possible underwater and at what operational cost or exposure? What evidence addresses covert communications and radiated acoustic signature?
Interoperability Can the system work with third-party sensors, common control systems, crewed platforms and allied systems? Are data formats, interfaces and operational concepts compatible?
Deployment and sustainment What shipboard or shore handling equipment, personnel, operating base, recovery arrangements, maintenance and training are required? Who is responsible for keeping the system ready and supporting it through fleet use?
Maturity and cost Is the item a requirement, demonstrator, prototype or fielded asset? Are acquisition, operations, maintenance and support costs reported on the same basis as competing options?

The UK Defence and Security Accelerator’s 2019 Royal Navy autonomous-underwater-capability competition is useful as an example of an evaluation framework, not as a current inventory or proof of fleet performance. It called for a flexible, open-architecture test system and identified test areas including waypoint navigation, obstacle avoidance, remote tasking, retasking and abort, navigation, collision and damage avoidance, sensors, situational awareness, stealth, covert communications and links with other vessels. It also called for details of operating bases and handling systems. Those topics show why a platform-only comparison is incomplete.

Separate requirements from demonstrated performance

When reading a specification or procurement document, label every figure by what it represents: a desired requirement, a manufacturer-stated capability, a trial result, or an operationally demonstrated result. These categories answer different questions. A competition target sets an aspiration for a system under development; it does not establish that a vehicle achieved it, carried a particular payload while doing so, or entered service.

The 2019 UK competition document specified desired capabilities for its intended autonomous test system. Its endurance, range and payload figures should therefore be read as historical competition requirements, not measured results for an in-service AUV or generic thresholds for the class.

Published figure What it refers to How to interpret it
At least three months of independent operation; up to 3,000 nautical miles as an example range Desired capabilities in the UK Defence and Security Accelerator’s 2019 Royal Navy competition document for a future test system. Competition targets, not verified operating results for a fielded vehicle. The document does not make them universal AUV benchmarks.
More than 2 m³ and 2 metric tonnes of payload capacity Desired payload capacity for the large test system described in the same 2019 UK competition document. A requirement for that intended test platform, not a current specification for a named fielded model or a threshold for all AUVs.
6,000 m search depth US Naval Sea Systems Command SUPSALV’s Ocean Search Assets page describes this capability for the Hugin 54 AUV, known as Trondheim; the page’s publication date is not stated. A named system’s stated deep-search capability, not a comparable depth table for the wider naval AUV field.
4 cm × 4 cm stated sonar resolution; 300–600 m swath; 4–10 nm² daily coverage The same SUPSALV page gives these figures for Trondheim’s described HiSAS 2030 synthetic-aperture-sonar configuration; its publication date is not stated. Configuration-specific figures. Do not generalize them to other vehicles, sonar payloads or operating conditions.

For any claimed performance value, request the configuration and trial conditions alongside the number: payload, speed, environment, mission profile, measurement method and whether the result was repeated. Without that context, even an accurate figure may not answer the operational comparison.

Use named programs as context, not as a league table

Trondheim illustrates mission-specific value

SUPSALV’s description of Hugin 54, or Trondheim, shows how a deep-ocean search mission and a particular synthetic-aperture-sonar configuration can shape a vehicle’s value. Its published figures are useful evidence about that named system, but they do not rank it against other AUVs on endurance, autonomy, integration, cost or suitability for a different mission.

AUKUS emphasizes payloads and enabling systems

The UK Ministry of Defence’s AUKUS Pillar II fact sheet, published 30 May 2026, describes an Australia–UK–US project for payloads and enabling systems usable across partner UUVs. Its stated approach is to develop national payloads first, followed by trilateral payloads and enabling technologies, with delivery starting in 2027. That is an announced schedule, not a completed delivery. The emphasis on shared capability underlines why planners should assess interfaces and common control alongside vehicle specifications.

Fleet integration continues beyond acquisition

The US Navy’s PEO Unmanned and Small Combatants describes responsibilities covering acquisition and maintenance of unmanned maritime systems, including UUVs, through fleet employment and sustainment. That lifecycle scope matters to comparison: a vehicle that meets mission performance targets still depends on an organization, support footprint and integration plan that can keep it available for fleet use.

  • Mission statement: the task, operational outcome, area, water depth, duration, launch location and recovery concept.
  • Configuration-specific performance: endurance, range, depth, navigation, payload capacity and sensor performance tied to the proposed vehicle and payload configuration.
  • Trial evidence: test conditions, measurement methods, results and limitations, clearly distinguishing planned targets from demonstrated performance.
  • Autonomy and control behavior: waypoint execution, obstacle handling, retasking and abort procedures, communications assumptions, and responses to faults or mission changes.
  • Integration evidence: interfaces for third-party payloads, data exchange, common control systems and operation with the intended crewed or uncrewed partners.
  • Deployment and support footprint: handling equipment, launch and recovery arrangements, operating-base needs, maintenance, training and responsible support organizations.
  • Lifecycle-cost assumptions: acquisition and recurring support costs, with the time period, included services and operating assumptions stated consistently for all candidates.

Score candidates against mission-specific thresholds only after these requirements are fixed. Keep unmet requirements, untested claims and unavailable cost data visible rather than masking them in a single weighted score. A result is meaningful only if the compared systems were evaluated under sufficiently comparable conditions.

What public information can—and cannot—establish

The official sources cited here provide a historical UK requirements framework, current program direction, and selected specifications for one deep-search vehicle. They do not provide a consistent current public dataset of fielded naval AUV specifications, trial results and lifecycle costs. Nor do they establish a public ranking of competing models. That limits what an open-source comparison can conclude: it can identify the evidence a buyer should demand and explain the context of published examples, but it cannot credibly name a universal winner from these figures alone.
