For an RTX 5090, NVIDIA’s published guidance is inconsistent: its specification table and Quick Start Guide call for a 1,000W power supply, while the Founders Edition setup section on the same product page says 850W minimum. Treat 1,000W as the clearer baseline—not a guarantee for every build—and check the current instructions for your exact card and the PSU maker’s recommendation for your complete system. The Founders Edition can use its included adapter with four dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables, or a compatible 600W-or-greater 16-pin cable.
How much wattage does an RTX 5090 need?
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5090 at 575W total graphics power and 1,000W required system power. The specification’s system-power figure is based on a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X; NVIDIA also recommends PCIe CEM 5.1 compliance. The card’s 575W figure is not the same as the power supply’s required capacity: the PSU must serve the whole PC, not just the graphics card. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications say, “Power requirements can be different depending on system configuration.”

There is a material conflict within NVIDIA’s own guidance. The RTX 5090 specification table and the RTX 5090 Quick Start Guide, Rev. 1 state 1,000W minimum. But the Founders Edition setup section on NVIDIA’s product page says “850W Minimum” and notes that more may be required depending on the system. These are not equivalent recommendations, and the 850W figure should not be treated as a universally safe target.

NVIDIA says add-in-card specifications can vary by manufacturer. For example, MSI’s 2026 guidance describes 1,000W or more for standard gaming systems and 1,300W–1,600W for some high-end CPU or overclocked configurations; those are MSI’s guidelines, not a universal NVIDIA rule. MSI’s RTX 50-series PSU guidance gives the details.
#1 Best Overall

- Intel ATX 3.1 Certified: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard, supporting PCIe 5.1 platform withstands 2x transient power excursions from the GPU.
- Keeps Quiet: A 120mm rifle bearing fan with a specially calculated fan curve keeps fan noise down, even when operating at full load.
- 105°C-Rated Capacitors: Delivers steady, reliable power and dependable electrical performance.
- Modern Standby Compatible: Extremely fast wake-from-sleep times and better low-load efficiency.
Which power cables can connect to an RTX 5090?
For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA’s Quick Start Guide describes two ways to supply GPU power. Follow the guide for the card in hand; its specific instructions differ from the product page’s setup summary.
- Included adapter: connect the adapter to the GPU and feed it with at least four independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables from the PSU.
- Native 16-pin cable: use one PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for 600W or more, as specified by the Quick Start Guide.
The product specification likewise lists four PCIe 8-pin cables with the adapter or one 600W cable. However, the Founders Edition setup section on the product page describes three or four 8-pin inputs and a 450W-or-greater Gen 5 cable. Because those values conflict with the guide, do not assume the lower counts or rating override the Quick Start Guide: confirm the current requirements for your precise card and cable.

- GaN MOSFET delivers superior power efficiency by up to 30% and a more organized internal layout for cooler operation
- "GPU-First" voltage sensing with patented-intelligent voltage stabilizer enhances voltage delivery by up to 45% to your graphics card for smoother gameplay and unwavering performance
- Large ROG heatsinks cover critical components, delivering lower temperatures and noise than reference designs
- Dual ball fan bearings can last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Partner cards may have their own connector and PSU instructions. As one example, MSI lists a 16-pin power connection and recommends ATX 3.1 for its RTX 5090 SUPRIM OC. That example does not establish the requirements for other RTX 5090 models.

MSI describes 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 as 16-pin (12+4) connector families that look alike and are backward compatible. MSI says the 12V-2×6 revision improves insertion detection to help reduce the risk associated with incomplete insertion. That connector-family compatibility does not make PSU-side modular cables interchangeable. MSI’s connector explanation covers the distinction.

Use the 16-pin cable supplied with your PSU, or one the PSU manufacturer explicitly confirms is compatible with your exact PSU model. Modular PSU connections are not standardized across models, so a cable that physically fits the PSU—or fits another PSU from the same brand—is not proof that it is safe to use. Check both the GPU maker’s instructions and the PSU maker’s cable compatibility information.
How to choose between an adapter and a native cable
Neither route is automatically right for every build. Compare the actual PSU and card documentation before connecting anything.

- PSU capacity: confirm its rated wattage is suitable for the full system and the exact card’s recommendation.
- Connection route: determine whether you will use the card’s included adapter or a native 16-pin cable supported by the PSU.
- Cable rating: for the Founders Edition guide’s native-cable route, check for a 600W-or-greater rating.
- PSU-model compatibility: verify that the cable is approved for your exact PSU, not merely the same connector type.
- Card identity: distinguish the Founders Edition from a partner card, whose specifications may differ.
MSI identifies its MPG A1000GS PCIE5 as a 1,000W ATX 3.1 PSU option, but that is an example rather than a universal recommendation. The suitability of any PSU still depends on the complete build and the exact RTX 5090 model.
How to seat the 16-pin connector safely
- With the system powered off, connect the correct PSU cable or the GPU’s included adapter according to the card’s instructions.
- Push the 16-pin plug straight into the GPU socket until it is fully and evenly seated. NVIDIA’s guide says the plug must sit flush; do not leave a visible gap.
- Check that the connection remains fully seated before powering on. If it does not fit or you are unsure whether the cable matches your PSU, stop and confirm compatibility with the card and PSU manufacturers rather than forcing the connection.
NVIDIA’s adapter instruction applies to the Founders Edition and its included adapter. Do not assume that adapter is a generic replacement cable or that it is supplied separately.
