Yes—deliberately setting AI aside can protect the learning that coding tasks are supposed to measure, but a permanent ban is not supported by current evidence. AI can help you finish an exercise while leaving your ability to read, debug, explain, and modify the code unchanged. The most useful approach is a practice mode: attempt the problem yourself, form and test a hypothesis, and only then use an AI assistant for a hint or explanation. Keep the parts that build retrieval and debugging in your own hands; use assistance that makes your reasoning clearer rather than replacing it.
Does using AI to code make you worse at programming?
It can make your performance look stronger than your understanding when it supplies the reasoning, code, or debugging steps you were meant to learn. It does not automatically make every learner worse: the outcome depends on who is learning, what the task measures, and whether the assistant is used for comprehension or delegation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAnthropic’s randomized 2026 trial illustrates the risk. It involved 52 mostly junior software engineers who had used Python weekly for more than a year but did not know the Trio library. After completing two Trio coding tasks, the AI-assisted group averaged 50% on a quiz, while the hand-coding group averaged 67%—a 17-percentage-point gap. The time advantage was about two minutes and was not statistically significant; the quiz difference was reported with Cohen’s d=0.738 and p=0.01. The largest gap appeared on debugging questions, which require recognizing why code fails rather than merely producing code that runs.
That experiment is not a universal verdict. Participants were working developers learning one unfamiliar library, and the sample was small. It does show why a completed task is a weak proxy for learning if the learner cannot later explain the code or repair it unaided.

What do the strongest studies actually show?
Different studies measured different outcomes, so their results should not be merged into one simple “AI helps” or “AI harms” conclusion.
| Study and setting | What participants did | Main result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic randomized trial (2026), 52 mostly junior developers | Learned the unfamiliar Trio Python library, completed two tasks, then took a quiz | Hand-coding quiz average 67% versus 50% with AI; about two minutes’ time difference, not statistically significant | It does not prove every use of AI lowers learning or apply directly to novices |
| Introductory programming trial (2026), 275 TUM students | Completed a 90-minute concurrency exercise with a scaffolded tutor, unrestricted ChatGPT, or no AI | Both AI groups scored higher on the exercise, but neither had greater pre/post knowledge gains or code-comprehension advantages; AI groups reported lower frustration and some lower cognitive load, while only the scaffolded tutor increased intrinsic motivation | The findings concern one course and exercise, not long-term retention |
| ChatGPT classroom study (2024), 82 college students | Practiced programming in a ChatGPT-facilitated class or through self-directed work | The ChatGPT group copied and pasted more generated code, pasted console messages, and debugged more. Programming performance improved, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant | More activity and higher performance in a session are not proof of stronger independent skill |
| CodeAid deployment (CHI 2024), 700 students and about 8,000 uses | Used a tool that answered conceptual questions, supplied explained pseudocode, and annotated incorrect code without revealing complete solutions | Demonstrated a large-scale design for keeping students engaged with the reasoning process | A deployment and usage analysis cannot prove that every learner benefits from the same scaffold |
| CodeFlow Assistant (2025) | Learned Python with four help levels: flowcharts, cloze coding, basic solutions, and advanced solutions | AI-assisted learners had higher coding scores, comparable gains in programming-concept understanding, lower intrinsic and extraneous cognitive loads, higher germane load, and improvements in selected self-regulated-learning measures | Results are course-specific and do not show that unrestricted code generation has the same effects |
| Debugging tutor interviews (ICER 2024), 20 students | Used a chatbot during debugging think-aloud tasks at three points in a semester | Students valued the chatbot’s information and experience but did not treat it as their primary source for learning debugging strategies; help-seeking patterns varied | Helpful explanations alone do not guarantee that debugging habits transfer |
| Copilot within-subject study (ITiCSE 2024), 17 novices | Coded under time pressure with and without an AI completion tool | The abstract reports higher efficiency and lower effort or workload, with no significant effects on emotion or self-efficacy | The sample was very small; a corrigendum was recorded in July 2026, so detailed claims require checking the corrected paper |
Read these results by separating performance now from knowledge later. A tool can reduce friction, cognitive load, or time and still leave a learner unable to retrieve the idea tomorrow. Conversely, a scaffold that withholds the final answer can improve a submitted solution while preserving more of the learner’s decisions.
Why can a higher exercise score hide weaker learning?
Generated code removes several mental operations that introductory courses are designed to exercise: recalling syntax, choosing a data structure, predicting control flow, interpreting an error, and deciding what test to run next. If the assistant performs those operations, the submitted program records the assistant’s competence as well as the student’s.
Code comprehension is a separate test. A learner may recognize a correct answer when it is displayed yet fail to generate the same pattern from memory. Debugging is an even harder transfer test: it requires forming a cause, changing one thing, observing the result, and revising the cause when the prediction fails. In Anthropic’s trial, debugging produced the largest score gap, making it a useful checkpoint before trusting any generated solution.
For that reason, judge an AI-assisted session with questions the exercise score cannot answer: Can you explain each line? Can you predict the output before running it? Can you alter a requirement without asking for a replacement? Can you locate and fix a fresh defect after the assistant is turned off?

How do I learn programming fundamentals without relying on AI?
Use an AI-free first pass, not an all-or-nothing rule. The following cycle keeps retrieval and debugging yours while still giving you a way out of a dead end.

- Define the behavior. Write a short specification, an example input and output, and at least one edge case. Do this before opening an assistant.
- Recall and sketch. Write the algorithm in plain language or pseudocode from memory. Name the variables, state changes, and loop or function boundaries.
- Implement a small slice. Code the simplest testable part. Run it early instead of waiting for a complete program.
- Make a hypothesis when it fails. Record what you expected, what happened, and which line or assumption you suspect. Try one change at a time and rerun the test.
- Use a narrow help request only after your attempt. Ask for a concept explanation, a question about your hypothesis, or a graduated hint. Do not paste the entire assignment and request a finished answer.
- Rebuild and explain. Close the response, retype the relevant code yourself, annotate why it works, and predict a new test before running it.
- Verify transfer. Change a requirement, remove a helper function, or fix a deliberately introduced bug without assistance. If you cannot, return to the concept rather than copying a larger solution.
This is a practical synthesis of the evidence, not a protocol tested as a single package in the cited studies. Adjust the length of the AI-free period to the goal: a graded assessment may require no assistance at all, while a real project can allow an explainer after you have documented your own reasoning.
What does “dropping AI” look like in daily practice?
Make the restriction specific enough to follow. A beginner might disable inline completions for a 30-minute fundamentals block, use a local interpreter and documentation, and keep a paper or text log of predictions and errors. An intermediate learner might allow search and library references but forbid generated code until a failing test and a written hypothesis exist.
For variables, control flow, and functions
Write tiny programs from memory: a loop that counts selected values, a function that validates input, or a dictionary-based lookup. Predict the result of two edge cases before running the program. The point is not to avoid every reference; it is to make the design and first implementation your own.
For data structures and algorithms
Draw the structure and state the invariant in words. For a queue, for example, specify what the front and rear mean and how each operation changes them. Only after your sketch works should you consult an explanation of an unfamiliar library method.

For debugging
Start with the smallest reproducible example, inspect values at a boundary, and use a debugger or temporary logging. Ask an assistant to critique your hypothesis or suggest what observation would distinguish two causes; avoid asking it to rewrite the function. This preserves the diagnostic loop that the debugging evidence identifies as important.
Should beginners use AI coding assistants?
Beginners can use them, but the assistant should behave more like a tutor than a ghostwriter. The safest default is graduated help: a question, a hint, pseudocode, or an explanation before any complete implementation.
CodeAid’s classroom design followed this principle by answering conceptual questions, giving pseudocode with line-by-line explanations, and annotating incorrect student code without directly exposing a full solution. CodeFlow Assistant similarly offered flowcharts and cloze-style code before basic and advanced solutions. In its course setting, the tool reported higher coding scores and comparable gains in concept understanding than teaching-assistant support, but that does not guarantee the same result with another tool or learner.
Prompts that preserve your reasoning
- “Ask me three questions that will help me find the bug; do not provide code.”
- “Here is my hypothesis and one failing test. Tell me what evidence would confirm or reject it.”
- “Give pseudocode and explain each step, then stop.”
- “Review this function for an edge case and explain the principle, without rewriting it.”
- “After I propose a fix, give me a new test that could disprove it.”
If you do receive code, hide it, reimplement the idea from your notes, and test a changed requirement. Reading an answer is exposure; retrieval and modification are practice.
How can I tell whether AI-assisted practice is actually teaching me?
Use checks that remove the assistant and vary the surface details. Keep a short record for each exercise rather than relying on how easy the session felt.

- Explain: describe the purpose of each block and the assumptions it makes.
- Predict: state output, variable values, or complexity before execution.
- Modify: change an input type, boundary condition, or requirement without regenerating the program.
- Debug: diagnose a fresh failure using a reproducible example and a stated hypothesis.
- Retrieve later: solve a similar problem the next day with a blank editor.
Score the independent attempts, not the polished version produced with help. If explanations are vague, predictions are guesses, or every modification triggers another prompt, switch back to an AI-free block and review the underlying concept.

Turning a practice rule into a permanent ban
Real development includes documentation, code review, and automation. A blanket prohibition can prevent you from learning how to evaluate tools responsibly. Reserve strict no-AI sessions for foundational retrieval, exams, and any assessment that requires independent work.
Waiting until you are completely stuck
Struggling is useful only when it produces a testable hypothesis. After you have a specification, an attempted implementation, and an observed failure, ask for a small hint instead of spending an hour repeating random edits.

Efficiency and lower workload were reported in the small 2024 Copilot study, but neither result demonstrates long-term understanding. Track delayed retrieval and transfer, not only minutes saved during the original task.
Accepting plausible explanations
An assistant can confidently describe code that is wrong, incomplete, or incompatible with your library version. Run the example, inspect the official documentation you are using, and test edge cases. Your own executable evidence outranks a fluent explanation.

What is the balanced answer to “remembering why we code”?
Code to exercise judgment, not merely to obtain text that runs. Current studies show that AI can raise immediate exercise scores, reduce effort, or support a lower-friction learning environment, while other evidence shows lower quiz mastery when assistance replaces independent construction. The difference is less about the existence of AI than about which cognitive work the learner still performs.
Keep problem definition, first attempts, predictions, and debugging hypotheses independent. Invite AI after that point to explain a concept, offer a graduated hint, or challenge your reasoning. When the assistant is gone, your ability to read, repair, explain, and adapt the program is the evidence that the practice worked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I learn to code if I use ChatGPT every day?
You can learn with daily use if you reserve meaningful work for yourself. Keep a record of your own specification, first attempt, tests, and explanation, and use the assistant to question or clarify that record rather than replace it. Periodic blank-editor exercises reveal whether the knowledge is retrievable.
How long should an AI-free coding session be?
There is no research-backed universal duration. Choose a block long enough to complete a specification, an implementation attempt, and at least one debugging cycle; shorten it when you are making random edits instead of forming hypotheses.
Is asking AI to debug my code cheating?
Whether it violates a rule depends on the course, employer, or assessment policy. Even when permitted, asking for a full repair can hide your diagnostic gap; share the error and your hypothesis first, then verify any suggestion with your own tests.
What should I study before using an AI coding assistant?
Learn how to run programs, read error messages, write simple tests, and use the debugger or logging in your language. Those skills let you check an assistant’s output instead of treating its confidence as evidence.
