Git can show who changed a line and when, but that does not explain why the change was made or what an AI coding agent was asked to do. The git why approach described by Lucia Adams addresses that gap by recording intent, prompts, rationale, alternatives and agent context as structured Git commit trailers. Because those notes live in commit messages, they can travel with ordinary Git history instead of depending on a chat archive or separate service.

There is an important naming caveat: “git why” also refers to separately documented tools that generate explanations from existing Git history. Those are not the same workflow. This guide separates the commit-trailer idea from the independently documented Node.js and Python tools, so you can tell what each one preserves and what it can explain.

Can Git blame tell me why AI-generated code was written?

No. git blame identifies the commit associated with each line and shows authorship and timing; it does not preserve the intention behind a change. That distinction matters even when the author is an AI agent: a future maintainer may see exactly what changed without knowing the prompt, the problem being solved, or the alternative that was rejected.

Lucia Adams frames the problem this way: “git blame tells you who changed a line and when. It never tells you why — especially when an AI agent wrote the change.” The proposed answer is to capture that missing context at commit time, alongside the code’s normal version history.

This is a provenance aid, not a guarantee that an explanation is correct. A commit can record an incomplete or mistaken rationale, just as a commit message can. Its value is that the reasoning is available for later inspection and review rather than being lost when an agent conversation ends.

What does the git why commit-trailer approach record?

It adds structured Key: value lines, called Git trailers, to commit messages. The proposed trailer names distinguish the problem, the prompt and the decision context instead of compressing everything into one vague note.

Trailer What it records
Why Why the change exists.
Why-Prompt The instruction that produced the change.
Why-Rationale Why this approach was chosen.
Why-Alternatives What was considered and rejected.
Why-Agent The model and tool that wrote the change.
Why-Session An identifier for grouping commits from one work session.
Why-Skip An explicit explanation for a commit that does not need a reason.

The fields are intended to make different kinds of context searchable and readable. For example, a prompt explains what was requested, while a rationale explains why the resulting implementation was selected. Recording both can help a reviewer distinguish “the agent was asked to do this” from “this is why the team accepted this approach.”

These trailers are metadata in the commit message, not a separate Git object type. That makes them visible in ordinary commit history and means they accompany the commit when the repository is pushed or cloned. It also means the record is only as durable as the relevant commit history: rewriting or removing commits can change what is available, and a trailer does not independently preserve an agent’s full conversation unless that information is included in the commit.

How do I preserve the prompt and reasoning behind an AI commit?

The central choice is to make the context part of the commit workflow, rather than expecting someone to reconstruct it later. The documented commands provide ways to add, inspect and export the records; exact behavior beyond those described commands is not established here.

Start with an advisory hook

  1. Run git why init in the project to install a commit-msg hook.
  2. When a substantial change lacks reasoning, the hook gives a soft reminder. It is advisory rather than a block, so the workflow can prompt contributors without making every commit fail.
  3. For small changes that do not need a recorded rationale, use the explicit skip concept rather than leaving reviewers to guess whether context was forgotten. The documented example categories are lockfile bumps and typo fixes.

Choose enforcement only when the team wants a commit gate

git why init --enforce configures the hook to block qualifying commits that lack acceptable reasoning. The described behavior skips trivial diffs and rejects placeholder reasons. That is stricter than a reminder: it can make commit creation fail until the author supplies a reason or the change qualifies for the skip path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enforcement is a policy choice, not an automatic measure of documentation quality. A required field can still contain a weak explanation. Teams should decide which changes count as substantial and what a useful rationale looks like before treating the hook as a quality gate.

Use the shorter commit command or configure an agent

The documented shorthand git why commit -m "..." -b "..." is intended to write the appropriate trailers while creating a commit. The reference material does not define every flag or the exact mapping of each value, so check the tool’s own usage information before relying on it for a particular field.

git why agent-setup prints instructions for CLAUDE.md or .cursorrules. These instructions are intended to tell an agent to record its own reasoning at commit time. This can reduce the burden on a person to recreate context after generation, but it does not remove the need for human review of the code or the recorded explanation.

How do I inspect the reasoning later?

The trailer workflow offers commands for looking up a commit, tracing the latest change to a file, browsing a project timeline and exporting records for queries. These are different views of the same commit-attached information, rather than separate sources of truth.

Command Documented purpose Useful when
git why HEAD Display reasoning for a commit. You are reviewing the current commit’s recorded context.
git why <path> Show reasoning for the latest commit that touched a file. You have found a file and want context for its most recent change.
git why log Browse a project’s decision timeline. You want to follow recorded decisions across a project.
git why export Emit recorded decisions as NDJSON. You want to query or process records with tools such as jq.

A file lookup is not the same as an explanation of every line or function in that file: the documented path command targets the latest commit that touched the path. If a suspicious function was edited repeatedly, inspect the relevant history rather than assuming the newest file-level result captures every decision that shaped it.

NDJSON export is useful when a team wants to filter or aggregate structured records outside the command’s direct display. The available description does not specify a schema beyond the fact that decisions are emitted as newline-delimited JSON, so consumers should inspect actual exported records before building automation around particular field names.

How is this different from ordinary Git history and AI history explainers?

The trailer approach preserves human- or agent-supplied context in the commit itself. Other tools bearing the similar name git-why are documented as explainers that analyze history already present in a repository. They can help investigate existing code, but they should not be confused with a workflow that makes a prompt and rationale part of each commit.

Approach What it retains or produces Where the explanation comes from Server or provider details in the documentation
git blame and ordinary git log Line authorship and timing, plus commit messages and diffs; not necessarily the intent or prompt. Existing Git history. Git history itself does not require a separate hosted decision log.
Commit-trailer git why approach Explicit intent, prompt, rationale, alternatives, agent and session context, or a skip explanation. Information recorded with the commit. The record travels with normal commit history; no separate dashboard is central to the design.
muin-company GitHub repository’s git-why A human-readable narrative based on blame, commit messages and diffs; targets can include a file, line, line range, function or multiple files. Analysis of existing Git history. Its README documents Anthropic API use; Node.js 18+ and a repository with at least one commit are listed requirements.
PyPI git-why package An explanation based on the current file and local Git history in offline mode, with optional provider integrations. Heuristic offline analysis or a configured AI provider. Offline use does not require an API key; Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter and Ollama integrations are listed as optional.

The muin-company README summarizes its own explainer as: “Git blame tells you who. git-why tells you WHY.” That is a description of its explanation goal, not evidence that the tool has access to the original prompt or the author’s actual intent. An inferred narrative from diffs and commit messages is different evidence from a rationale written into a commit when the change was made.

The documented installation routes for that repository are npm install -g git-why and npx git-why. Its README identifies it as MIT licensed. The separate PyPI package is version 0.1.0, uploaded June 19, 2026, and is also described as MIT licensed; its documented installation is pip install git-why, and it requires Python 3.10 or newer.

What are the limitations and failure cases?

Commit-attached reasoning improves availability, but it cannot ensure accuracy, completeness or appropriate disclosure. The tools that infer explanations from history have a different limitation: they can only infer from what they can inspect, not recover context that was never recorded.

For commit trailers

  • Missing context remains missing. If the contributor or agent does not write a useful reason, a trailer cannot reconstruct the original conversation automatically.
  • Boilerplate can defeat the purpose. Enforcing a nonempty field may encourage low-value text; the documented enforcement mode rejects placeholders, but teams still need meaningful standards.
  • Trivial changes need a deliberate path. A typo fix or lockfile update may not warrant a full rationale. The Why-Skip concept records that decision explicitly instead of making omission ambiguous.
  • It is commit-level context. A trailer documents a change as committed; it is not a replacement for a full architecture decision record or design document when a decision needs broader discussion, ownership or long-term detail.

For tools that generate explanations from existing history

  • Offline Python explanations are heuristic. The package documentation describes the offline provider as reading the current file and local Git history; its explanation should be treated as a lead for investigation, not authoritative intent.
  • Renames and deletions can be difficult. The package notes that resolving deleted or renamed files depends on Git’s ability to resolve them.
  • Whole-file previews are capped. The Python package limits whole-file previews, which can constrain context for large files.
  • Binary files receive special handling. They are not ordinary source text, and the package documents special handling rather than promising a code-style explanation.
  • Provider requirements differ. The Node repository documents Anthropic API use, whereas the Python package lists multiple optional integrations and an offline option. Do not assume that similarly named packages have the same dependencies, output or privacy behavior.

Which approach should I use?

Choose based on whether your problem is missing provenance on future changes or difficulty understanding code that already exists. They can be complementary, but one does not substitute for the other’s evidence.

  • For future AI-generated commits: use commit-attached trailers when you want the prompt, rationale and alternatives to travel with repository history. Begin with an advisory hook if the team is still learning what context is useful.
  • For a project with established history: an explainer that analyzes blame, messages and diffs may help you form a readable account of a file, line or function. Treat generated reasoning as an interpretation, especially if no original decision note exists.
  • For offline investigation: the Python package documents an offline provider, with heuristic output and the file/history limitations described above.
  • For decisions with broad architectural consequences: use a fuller design or architecture record where the reasoning needs more than commit-sized context. A commit trailer can point toward the decision, but it is not a substitute for that document.

There are no published user counts, accuracy scores, adoption figures, latency measurements or performance benchmarks in the documented material described here. That means the choice should rest on workflow fit and the kind of evidence you need, not an unsupported claim that one approach is more accurate or widely adopted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does git why recover an AI agent’s old chat transcript?

The trailer workflow records a prompt and selected reasoning only if they are written into the commit; it is not described as restoring a closed chat. The separately documented history explainers analyze repository data and likewise do not establish that they can retrieve an agent conversation.

Can I use git why on code that was written before I installed it?

A history explainer can analyze existing blame, messages and diffs, and the Node repository documents targets from files to functions. Commit trailers cannot retroactively add a trustworthy original rationale unless someone can supply that context now.

Do Git trailers survive when I push a branch or clone a repository?

Trailers are part of commit messages, so they travel as part of ordinary commits when those commits are pushed and cloned. They are not protected from history rewriting or deletion any more than the commits that contain them.

Is the offline Python explanation the same as a recorded decision?

No. The package describes offline output as heuristic analysis of the current file and local Git history, while a recorded decision is context deliberately supplied and attached to a commit. Treat inferred explanations as investigative clues rather than proof of intent.
