Use AI to reason, not to decide whether a release passes. An agent can interpret requirements, discover unfamiliar workflows, suggest scenarios and diagnose failures. Before any result can block CI, however, an approved scenario should be compiled into a versioned execution artifact and run by a deterministic test runner with pinned dependencies, controlled data, isolation, timeouts, assertions and complete evidence.
This split gives an enterprise both adaptability and repeatability: probabilistic exploration during test design, predictable behavior during release validation. The sections below show where the boundary belongs, how to implement it with Playwright or an equivalent runner, and how to govern agent-generated tests so another engineer can reproduce the same result.

Why must AI reasoning be separated from test execution?
Large language models do not produce identical reasoning every time. Sampling settings, model updates, prompt changes, tool availability, retrieved documents and live application state can all alter an agent’s next action. A release gate cannot depend on those variables. It needs the same inputs to produce the same pass, fail or error outcome, with evidence that an engineer can inspect later.
That is the distinction captured by Microsoft Commerce Platforms engineering manager Ram Mohan Reddy Gudupalli: “The nature of AI is probabilistic, but testing requires deterministic responses.” AI remains valuable because requirements and user goals are often ambiguous. Deterministic automation becomes valuable once the team has decided exactly what behavior is under test.

Think of the system as a compiler pipeline. The agent converts business intent into a candidate scenario; a person or policy gate approves it; a compiler turns that scenario into ordinary test code or a signed execution context; and a runner executes the resulting instructions under controlled conditions.
- Probabilistic layer: requirement interpretation, coverage analysis, exploratory navigation, candidate test generation and failure diagnosis.
- Deterministic layer: fixed steps, request payloads, expected outputs, assertions, fixtures, timeouts, retries, reports and release decisions.
- Governance layer: permissions, approvals, audit records, model and prompt versions, data lineage and drift checks.
Where should an AI agent stop and the test runner take over?
The hand-off should occur after the scenario’s intent and acceptance criteria have been approved, but before any action can affect a blocking CI job or production-connected system. An agent may propose “a customer can recover an account after losing a second factor.” It should not silently choose which account, invent an expected status code, or alter the release gate when a check fails.
1. Ground the agent in approved knowledge
Provide the agent with current business-process documents, API contracts, existing tests, policy rules and known data constraints. Record the document versions or commit identifiers used for each proposal. Unapproved documentation, personal notes or live production records should not become implicit test requirements.
2. Let the agent propose, not commit
The agent can identify missing paths, choose candidate roles, map a journey through a UI and draft API calls. Present those choices as a reviewable plan. Require a human reviewer or a policy service to approve risk-sensitive actions such as changing permissions, sending messages, deleting data or invoking paid services.
3. Compile the approved intent
Microsoft’s Enterprise Test Platform pattern creates a TC JSON execution context containing every step, API mapping, input payload, expected output and validation assertion. Whether an organization uses that format or ordinary test code, the result should be immutable for the run and stored with a version or hash.
4. Transfer control to ordinary automation
Playwright or another deterministic runner should perform browser and API operations. The runner, not the language model, owns locator resolution, waiting, retries, fixture setup, cleanup, timeout handling and the pass/fail decision.

What does a production-ready architecture look like?
A practical design has five connected stages. Keep the interfaces explicit so a model change cannot silently change the behavior of a release-gating suite.
| Stage | AI may do | System must record | Blocking CI? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge and requirements | Summarize approved rules and identify ambiguity | Source versions, policy scope and retrieval context | No |
| Reasoning and proposal | Suggest journeys, data combinations and coverage gaps | Prompt, model identifier, tool versions and proposed plan | No |
| Approval and compilation | Explain a reviewer’s requested changes | Approval identity, policy result and execution-context hash | Only after approval |
| Deterministic execution | None, except an explicitly isolated diagnostic assistant | Logs, assertions, environment and test artifacts | Yes, for the release suite |
| Evidence and feedback | Cluster failures and suggest a repair | Original failure, diagnosis, patch review and rerun result | Diagnosis cannot override the original result |
This separation also supports the “challenge” pattern described by Gudupalli: “Each time some action is done by the AI, another agent comes and challenges it.” In practice, the challenger can check policy compliance, unsafe tool calls, missing assertions or contradictions with the approved contract. It should produce a review signal, not an unrecorded mutation of the test.
How do you turn an agent proposal into a reproducible test?
Use a controlled compilation workflow rather than copying an agent’s chat response into CI.
- Define the goal and invariants. Write what must be true in business terms, such as “a locked account cannot issue a new session,” and identify the structured fields or state transitions that prove it.
- Generate candidate scenarios. Ask the agent for normal, boundary, permission and recovery paths. Require it to cite the approved requirement or API contract behind each one.
- Review risk and scope. Reject steps that touch real customer records, rely on an unavailable dependency, or have no observable acceptance criterion. Decide which scenarios are exploratory and which may become release gates.
- Freeze inputs. Assign fixture identifiers, seed data, feature-flag values, locale, time zone and clock behavior. Replace live third-party calls with deterministic mocks where the external service is not the subject of the test.
- Compile the scenario. Generate ordinary Playwright or equivalent test code, or create a signed execution context that contains steps, payloads, expected outputs and assertions. Store it in version control.
- Review the diff. Treat generated code like a human-authored change. Check locators, authorization boundaries, cleanup, assertion strength and whether a changed requirement is reflected in the test.
- Run in a controlled environment. Pin the browser, runtime, package lockfile and service images. Use isolated browser contexts and a dedicated data namespace.
- Archive evidence. Save the execution-context hash, commit, model and prompt metadata, test data version, runner configuration, trace, screenshots, network events and assertion results.
Which controls make Playwright execution deterministic enough for CI?
Playwright’s documented capabilities fit this boundary because the runner creates fresh browser contexts per test, auto-waits for actionability, retries assertions and supports resilient role, label and test-id locators. Full traces can include DOM snapshots, network requests, console logs and screenshots, giving a failure a fixed evidentiary record rather than a request for the agent to “try again.”

Isolation and data
Create a new browser context and account or tenant fixture for each test. Seed data through an API or database fixture, tag it with the run identifier, and clean it up even when a test fails. Mock payment, messaging, identity and other external services when their behavior is not the contract under test. Flowable’s agent-testing guidance uses this approach and recommends assertions that tolerate small wording differences in generated text.
Timing and parallelism
Set a global timeout so a hung suite terminates with a report. Playwright recommends one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility; use sharding only when the CI system can support the resulting parallel isolation and data partitioning. Do not treat retries as proof of correctness: record the first failure and distinguish a recovered retry from a clean pass.

Dependencies and containers
Pin package lockfiles, browser binaries and service images. Playwright’s CI documentation shows the pre-built mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.64.0-noble image in examples. That is documentation context, not a permanent version recommendation; update it deliberately, run the replay corpus, and review any behavioral differences before changing the release image.
Assertions
Prefer structured response fields, database state transitions, accessibility roles, HTTP status classes and domain invariants. For an LLM-generated explanation where exact wording is not a requirement, use a robust contains or regular-expression check with a safety condition. Exact string equality is appropriate only when the contract explicitly promises exact text.
How should deterministic and agentic tests be combined?
Keep stable regression tests as the release gate and place agentic end-to-end checks in an exploratory or goal-validation layer. The two layers answer different questions: deterministic tests ask whether a known contract still holds; agents ask whether a goal can still be achieved through an unfamiliar or changing path.
| Dimension | Deterministic regression | Agentic goal validation |
|---|---|---|
| Reproducibility | High when inputs and dependencies are pinned | Variable unless the proposal is compiled and replayed |
| Novel behavior coverage | Limited to encoded paths | Strong for discovering alternate journeys and gaps |
| Assertion robustness | Explicit contracts and stable invariants | Needs structured checks and tolerance for wording variation |
| Failure diagnosis | Usually localized to a step or assertion | Can suggest causes, but the original trace must remain authoritative |
| Runtime cost | Predictable and suitable for every commit | Higher model and tool overhead; schedule selectively |
| Isolation | Fixtures and mocks are defined in code | Must prevent the agent from reaching uncontrolled systems |
| Auditability | Commit, report and trace are conventional artifacts | Also requires prompts, model, tools, approvals and execution-context hashes |
| Release role | Blocking gate for known requirements | Non-blocking discovery, or a gate only after compilation and stabilization |
Slack Engineering reported more than 200 agentic end-to-end workflows run in test workspaces with non-production data, using Playwright MCP, the Playwright CLI and agent-generated Playwright tests. That example illustrates a safe operating boundary: broad agent exploration in disposable environments, followed by ordinary tests that can be rerun independently.
What should be mocked, and what should remain real?
Mock a dependency when its availability, latency, pricing or nondeterministic response would obscure the behavior you are testing. For example, an agent’s ability to handle a fraud-service timeout can be tested with a mock that returns a fixed timeout sequence. Keep the system under test real, including its authorization, persistence and event handling, so the test still validates the product contract.
- Mock external identity, payment, delivery, search or generative services when they are not the subject of the test.
- Use contract tests to verify that the mock still matches the provider’s schema.
- Reserve a small, separately scheduled integration suite for real-provider compatibility and rate-limit behavior.
- Never allow exploratory agents to use production credentials or unmasked personal data.
How do you make AI-generated tests auditable?
Store enough metadata to reconstruct both the proposal and the execution without rerunning the model. At minimum, retain the following for every generated or repaired test:

- Model name and version, sampling settings and system prompt.
- Retrieved requirement and API-document versions, plus tool and connector versions.
- Human or policy approval, including the approved scenario and any rejected actions.
- Generated source or signed execution-context hash and the repository commit.
- Fixture, seed-data and mock-service versions; browser, runtime and container identifiers.
- Trace, DOM or accessibility snapshots, screenshots, network events, console output and assertion results.
- Whether the run was exploratory, blocking, retried, quarantined or repaired after failure.
Microsoft’s agentic behavior engineering guidance groups the work into specifying, grounding, controlling, verifying and observing behavior. Those controls matter because a model, prompt, tool or source-data change can create behavioral drift that a traditional code-diff review will not reveal.
How should failures be diagnosed without sacrificing determinism?
Preserve the first failing run as the canonical result. A separate diagnostic agent may inspect its trace and propose a cause or patch, but it must not edit the test and rerun it invisibly until it passes.
- Classify the failure as product defect, test defect, environment issue, data collision, dependency outage or model/tool drift.
- Replay the frozen execution artifact with the same seed, data namespace and dependency versions.
- Compare structured assertions, network events and DOM snapshots to the last known-good run.
- Ask the diagnostic agent for a minimal, evidence-based hypothesis and proposed change.
- Review the change, update the artifact or code in version control, and run the original case plus impacted regression tests.
- Record both the original failure and the accepted repair; never replace history with the repaired result.
AMD’s agentic-testing blueprint follows a similar separation: an LLM reasoning service and Playwright MCP browser tools operate through an orchestrator, which generates a downloadable Pytest module that can rerun independently.

Release policy
Define in writing which suites can block a merge, which are advisory, how long a quarantine may last and who can approve a model or prompt update. “Tests enforce journeys. Agents verify goals,” is a useful division: journeys become dependable gates; goal verification expands discovery without silently changing release criteria.
What are the most common implementation mistakes?
- Letting the agent run directly in blocking CI: compile and review its proposal first.
- Using live third-party systems: mock them and run a separate, controlled compatibility suite.
- Asserting exact generated prose: assert structured outputs or guarded patterns unless exact wording is contractual.
- Relying on retries to hide flakes: keep the first failure and investigate timing, isolation or product state.
- Sharing accounts across workers: create per-test contexts and partition data before enabling sharding.
- Failing to record model context: persist prompts, model identifiers, tool versions and execution hashes with the test artifact.
- Allowing automatic self-repair: require a reviewed diff and rerun the unchanged original case.
- Ignoring non-functional evidence: capture traces, network activity, console logs and environment metadata, not just a Boolean result.
What is the practical operating model?
Start with a small set of high-value journeys. Use an agent to map requirements and propose boundary cases, then compile the accepted scenarios into ordinary tests. Run those tests on every change with pinned dependencies and isolated data. Schedule broader agent exploration separately, in non-production workspaces, and promote a discovered scenario to the release suite only after it has stable assertions and a reviewed artifact.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should prompts and models be versioned for test automation?
Store prompts, model identifiers, sampling parameters and tool schemas beside the generated artifact or in an auditable registry. Give each combination a version and run a small replay corpus before approving it for broader use.
Can an AI-generated test ever be allowed to block a release?
Yes, after its scenario has been reviewed, compiled into versioned code or a signed execution context, and shown to produce stable results with controlled fixtures. The blocking job should execute that artifact without asking the model to improvise new steps.
How do you test an agent that must call external tools?
Provide deterministic fakes for the tools, including fixed success, error and timeout responses, and verify the resulting tool calls and state transitions. Keep a separate integration check for the real tool provider so outages or policy changes do not make the main suite inconclusive.
