To stop Apple Music from putting every playlist addition in your library, disable the platform’s playlist-to-library preference. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Music and turn off Add Playlist Songs. On a Mac, open Music > Settings > Advanced and turn off Add songs to Library when adding to > Playlists. Your songs will still be added to the playlist; the change only stops the automatic library addition.

How do I stop Apple Music from adding playlist songs to my library?

Use the setting for the device on which you add songs. Apple gives iPhone and iPad a single switch, while Mac uses a preference in the Music app.

Device Open Turn off
iPhone or iPad Settings > Apps > Music Add Playlist Songs
Mac Music > Settings > Advanced Add songs to Library when adding to > Playlists

Apple’s iPhone playlist guide identifies Add Playlist Songs as the control that copies playlist additions into the library. Apple documents the Mac preference in its Advanced Music settings guide.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Music.
  3. Find Add Playlist Songs.
  4. Turn the switch off.

After this, adding an Apple Music track to a playlist does not automatically add that track to your library. The playlist-add action itself continues to work; Apple describes adding songs to a playlist separately from copying them to the library in its Apple Music playlist instructions.

On Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. In the menu bar, choose Music > Settings.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Turn off Add songs to Library when adding to > Playlists.

That Mac preference also governs the library copy made when adding Apple Music songs to a playlist and when joining a collaborative playlist. Apple says the option is available only when you are signed in as an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscriber and Sync Library is enabled in Music’s General settings.

What does turning off “Add Playlist Songs” actually change?

It separates two actions that Apple Music can otherwise perform together: placing a track in a playlist and placing the same track in your library. With the switch off, the track remains in the chosen playlist without being added to the library automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Playlist membership: the track appears in the playlist you selected.
  • Library membership: the track appears in your Songs, Albums, Artists, or other library views.
  • Downloading: saving a track for offline listening is a separate action and is not implied merely by playlist or library membership. Apple treats downloads separately in its guide to adding music and listening offline.

The preference is not a cleanup command. It controls what happens when you add tracks in the future; changing it does not remove songs that are already in your library.

Why can a song still appear in my library after I turn the setting off?

Turning off the preference prevents new automatic copies, but it does not undo earlier additions or other ways a track may have entered the library. Check whether the song was already present, was added manually, or was added from another device before judging the setting.

Existing library entries remain

A track that was copied into the library while the preference was enabled stays there until you remove it yourself. The switch changes the add-to-playlist behavior; it does not retroactively reorganize your library.

Another device may have made the addition

When Sync Library is enabled, Apple says changes to the music library update across devices signed in with the same Apple Account. An addition made on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can therefore become visible on the others through synchronization. Apple explains this behavior in its iPhone playlist guide and music and offline-listening guide.

Playlist and library views are different

Seeing a track in a playlist does not by itself prove that it is in the library. Open a library view such as Songs or Albums to check library membership rather than relying on the playlist display.

How do I remove a song from a playlist without deleting it from my library?

Use the playlist’s remove action, not the library’s delete command. Apple states that deleting a song from a playlist does not delete it from the library; the reverse is also separate, because deleting a song from the library does not delete it from playlists. The two operations are documented independently in Apple’s iPhone playlist guide and Music on Mac playlist guide.

This distinction matters when you are tidying a playlist but want to keep a track available elsewhere in your collection. Select the playlist-specific removal option and confirm that you are not choosing the command that deletes the library item.

What should I check if the Mac preference is missing?

Apple documents the Mac setting only under specific account and synchronization conditions. Work through these checks before assuming the feature has been removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that you are signed in to the Music app with an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription.
  2. Open Music > Settings > General and make sure Sync Library is enabled.
  3. Return to Music > Settings > Advanced and look for Add songs to Library when adding to > Playlists.
  4. If the option is still absent, verify that you are using the Music app rather than a different audio player or a local file-management view.

The subscription and Sync Library requirements come from Apple’s Advanced settings documentation. The preference is tied to Apple Music library features, so it may not appear for an account that does not meet those conditions.

Should I leave the setting on or turn it off?

Turn it off if you use playlists as lightweight queues, discovery lists, or temporary collections and do not want every addition mixed into your permanent library. Leave it on if your playlists are also your preferred way to collect music and you want each addition available in library views automatically.

  • Turn it off for a cleaner library: playlist additions stay focused on the playlist.
  • Leave it on for automatic collection: adding to a playlist also creates the library entry described by Apple.
  • Use manual library additions when needed: you can still add selected tracks to the library separately instead of changing the playlist workflow for every song.

There is no separate purchase, accessory, or third-party app required for either choice; the behavior is controlled by Apple Music’s built-in preferences.

How can I verify that the change worked?

  1. Turn off the relevant switch on the device where you add music.
  2. Choose an Apple Music song that is not already in your library.
  3. Add it to an existing playlist or create a test playlist.
  4. Open the library’s Songs or Albums view and check whether the track was added there.
  5. Open the playlist and confirm that the track is still present.

A successful result is a track that remains in the playlist while no new library entry is created. If the track was already in your library, use a different song for the test because the preference does not remove existing entries.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Changing the wrong device: iPhone/iPad and Mac use different paths and labels, so adjust the setting on the device where you normally add songs.
  • Looking under the wrong iPhone menu: on current iPhone software, Music is reached through Settings > Apps > Music.
  • Expecting the playlist to stop working: the switch controls the library copy, not playlist membership.
  • Deleting from the library to fix a playlist: use the playlist’s own removal command when you want to keep the library copy.
  • Confusing library presence with an offline download: downloading is a separate action, so check download status independently.

Does Sync Library change what I see on other devices?

Yes. With Sync Library enabled, Apple says library changes are updated across devices signed in with the same Apple Account. That synchronization can make an addition or removal appear on another device even though the original action happened elsewhere.

Sync Library does not turn playlist membership and library membership into the same thing; it synchronizes library changes after they occur. Keep the playlist and library actions separate when checking the result.

Can I still add a particular song to the library after turning the switch off?

Yes. Turning off automatic playlist copying does not block deliberate library additions. It simply prevents the playlist action from performing that second action automatically, allowing you to keep only the tracks you specifically choose in the library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off Add Playlist Songs remove tracks that are already in my library?

No. The preference controls what happens during later playlist additions; it does not delete existing library entries. Remove older entries separately if you want to clean them up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Mac preference apply to collaborative playlists?

Apple says the Mac preference also controls adding Apple Music songs to the library when you join a collaborative playlist. If you use collaborative playlists, check the same Advanced setting before joining or adding tracks.

Why does a playlist song appear on my iPad after I added it on my Mac?

With Sync Library enabled, library changes can propagate to other devices signed in with the same Apple Account. Check which device performed the addition and whether the track was already present before synchronization.

Does being in a playlist mean a song is downloaded for offline listening?

No. Playlist membership and offline downloads are separate Apple Music actions. A song can be listed in a playlist without being stored for offline playback.
