You can keep playing some games after their online servers close, but there is no universal offline switch. The outcome depends on what the remote service does: optional multiplayer can sometimes be replaced by local play, while mandatory authentication or server-hosted game logic may make the title unusable. Start by reading the dated shutdown notice, install any official offline patch, export saves and claim content while the service still works, then check for a supported LAN or dedicated-server option. Community replacements are separate, unofficial projects with legal, security and availability risks. A disc, installed client or backup drive preserves local files, not a missing authorization service. Ubisoft’s original The Crew shows the hard limit: Ubisoft said it would become inaccessible on every listed platform after March 31, 2024.
How do I know whether a game can survive a server shutdown?
Identify the exact function that requires a server before choosing a workaround. The developer and the company operating the servers may be different, and a game can use remote services for only one feature or for nearly everything.

- Authentication only: the server confirms that your copy or account is entitled to launch. An official patch may remove or replace that check.
- Optional online features: multiplayer matchmaking, leaderboards, events, social tools or cloud saves may disappear while a local campaign remains available.
- Remote game logic or content: world simulation, missions, inventories, anti-cheat, progression and downloadable assets may be generated or validated remotely. If those components are indispensable, a local installation cannot recreate them by itself.
The European Commission distinguishes these dependencies when discussing games that become unavailable after discontinuation. Read the game’s own shutdown notice and latest patch notes rather than inferring playability from whether you bought a disc or a digital download. A physical copy does not guarantee an offline mode, and a digital copy can remain playable if its local build and authorization path are supported.
Record the affected platforms, the shutdown date, the functions that will stop, and any required account or save migration. Keep the notice and patch notes with your backups so you can later identify the final supported version.

What should I do before the shutdown date?
Complete preservation steps while the service still answers requests. These actions cannot manufacture missing server data, but they prevent avoidable loss when a publisher provides an export or claim process.
- Read the dated notice. Confirm whether PC, console, cloud-streaming editions, subscriptions or different regions have different deadlines. Note whether the notice promises an offline patch, a final client update, save export, refunds or only a service termination.
- Install the final supported update. Download it through the publisher’s normal channel while it remains available. Keep an untouched copy of the installer or update package when the license and platform permit legitimate local backup.
- Open the game’s own migration screen. A launcher’s generic “offline” setting is not proof that the game itself can run without its service. Follow the title-specific instructions for exporting progression or creating an offline save.
- Export progression and claim entitlements. If the publisher requires you to redeem vehicle packs, season content, account rewards or other purchases before shutdown, do that while connected. Make sure the game shows the items in the local profile before disconnecting.
- Back up local saves separately. Copy saves to a second location without overwriting the original. Keep the account identifier, platform edition and version number with the files, because a save from another edition may not load.
- Document what transferred. Capture the in-game confirmation, export date and any exclusions. This record helps distinguish a failed migration from a feature that the publisher intentionally left online-only.
A local backup can be stored on an external drive such as Kingston’s XS1000, which the manufacturer describes as an external file-backup device: Kingston XS1000 external SSD. Use a backup drive to hold eligible installers and saves, not as a substitute for a retired server. Keep at least one untouched copy before testing an exported save.

Yes, when the publisher changes the build so local play no longer depends on the retired service. An official offline build is the safest route because its save format, entitlement handling and supported platforms are defined by the rights holder. It may still remove multiplayer, events, leaderboards, social features or other online-only data.
The Crew 2: a documented offline conversion
Ubisoft released Hybrid Mode for The Crew 2 on October 16, 2025. While connected, a player can choose Online Mode or Offline Mode; when no connection is detected, the game launches in Offline Mode. Ubisoft’s instructions are published in its update notice: The Crew 2 Hybrid Mode and offline-save instructions.
- Launch The Crew 2 while online.
- Claim eligible purchased vehicle packs, Season Pass content and Ubisoft Connect rewards in The House or an HQ.
- Choose Export to Offline Save from the game’s save-management option.
- Confirm that the offline profile contains the progression and content you intend to keep.
Online and offline saves are separate. Ubisoft warns: “Online and offline saves are separate. Progress made offline will not carry back over into your online save.” A later export from the online profile overwrites offline-only progress, so finish any offline session you want to preserve before exporting again.
Offline mode excludes multiplayer, leaderboards, LIVE Summits, specified shops, user-generated content and some online-only achievements. Those omissions are part of the supported design, not a fault in your connection. This example applies to The Crew 2; it does not establish that the original The Crew or The Crew Motorfest has the same released offline mode. Check the exact title’s current publisher notice.

Can I use LAN play or host a dedicated server?
Only when the game was built to accept local-network or self-hosted sessions. Look for an in-game LAN browser, a peer-to-peer host option, or server software supplied for your edition. Confirm the supported operating system, game version, ports, hardware, player limit and license terms before the public service closes.
What a supported server package provides
A dedicated-server package can replace matchmaking and session hosting, but it cannot automatically replace account authentication, licensed downloadable assets, progression databases or anti-cheat services. Some titles require the server and clients to be on a matching build; others require a separate configuration file or a locally connected network.
Minecraft as a genuine self-hosting example
Mojang publishes official server software for both Java and Bedrock editions. Its download page states that the official software is free to download: Minecraft server download. That establishes one supported route for that game only. It does not mean a server package exists for every discontinued title, nor does it grant permission to recreate another publisher’s service.
Before relying on self-hosting, verify that your edition matches the server package, that players can connect without the retired authentication endpoint, and that you can maintain updates, backups, access control and moderation. A computer or hosting plan is useful only after those game-specific requirements are confirmed.

What if only a community replacement exists?
Community servers and reverse-engineered clients can restore selected features when no publisher-supported build exists, but they are unofficial and incomplete by definition. The European Commission describes fan-run private servers and community reverse engineering while noting security, rights and moderation concerns.
- Use a project that explicitly supports your legitimately acquired copy, platform and version.
- Inspect the source, release history and security practice before running executables or entering account credentials.
- Do not assume that a project reproduces every mission, item, achievement or save format.
- Check local copyright, circumvention, trademark and consumer law; a private server is not automatically authorized.
- Expect availability to depend on volunteer maintainers, hosting costs and moderation capacity.
Never present a fan server as publisher-approved or guaranteed to remain online. Keep your original local files untouched and isolate experimental clients from accounts containing unrelated personal information.

Will a disc, installed client or backup drive work after shutdown?
Only if the game’s remaining local components can launch and perform their essential work without the retired service. A disc may contain the executable but still require online authentication or server-hosted content. An installed client can be less useful than a backed-up installer if a later update removes a working local mode, but neither one supplies a server-side inventory or authorization token that no longer exists.
Back up legitimately obtained installers, patches and local saves when the platform permits it. Preserve the original files separately from any community modifications. A backup protects against a broken drive or unavailable download; it does not preserve remote events, cloud-only progression, account ownership checks or content that was never stored locally.
What are the realistic routes after servers close?
Choose the route that matches the game’s dependency and the support available for your edition. The limitations are different, so do not treat an offline patch, a private server and a file backup as interchangeable.

What happened to the original The Crew?
The original The Crew demonstrates why ownership of a copy does not guarantee continued access. In a December 14, 2023 notice, Ubisoft said the game would remain playable until March 31, 2024 and then become inaccessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna and Ubisoft+. The notice is available at Ubisoft’s The Crew service-shutdown announcement.
Do not conflate that title with its sequels, assume that its disc restores play, or infer that a later sequel update repaired the original. When a game’s indispensable server components disappear and no authorized replacement exists, keeping the storage media does not recreate those components.
How should I evaluate a game before buying it?
Look beyond the words “online” and “offline.” Ask what happens at launch, during a campaign and when the publisher ends service.

- Launch dependency: Does the game require an account or server every time, or only for first activation?
- Local content: Are campaign levels, progression and purchased items stored on the device?
- Exportability: Can the publisher document a save export or migration path?
- Multiplayer architecture: Is there LAN, peer-to-peer or official dedicated-server support?
- Shutdown policy: Does the license or support page explain what remains after service termination?
- Edition differences: Do console, PC, subscription and cloud versions have different dependencies?
GOG describes its curated DRM-free PC catalogue and optional client at GOG’s about page. DRM-free distribution can reduce launcher dependence, but it does not preserve a publisher’s online multiplayer, events or cloud services. Verify each game’s own requirements rather than treating a storefront label as a guarantee of perpetual access.

Legality depends on the country, the type of copy, the action taken and whether you are restoring local play or operating an online service. The following rules are general information, not individual legal advice.
United States
As displayed in the eCFR on October 30, 2026, 37 CFR 201.40(b)(19) covers specified circumvention involving lawfully acquired complete games when a necessary external authentication server has ceased to provide access. Its personal-use provision concerns restoring local gameplay on a PC, console or locally connected systems, not play through an online service.
The rule does not provide a blanket authorization for public private servers, distribution of circumvention tools, piracy or reproduction of absent server-hosted content. It also does not prove that a technical workaround exists for a particular game. Libraries, archives and museums have distinct eligibility conditions, so do not assume that a personal-use exception applies to commercial hosting or sharing.
European Union
In its June 16, 2026 response to the Stop Destroying Videogames initiative, the European Commission did not propose a general law requiring publishers to leave every game playable after discontinuation. The response says existing, case-specific duties about disclosure, contract conformity and remedies can matter; where a qualifying discontinuation breaches conformity expectations, a consumer may have a proportionate refund claim depending on the contract and circumstances.
That is not an automatic full-refund rule, and the initiative itself did not enact a keep-games-playable guarantee. The Commission discussed stakeholder work toward a possible voluntary code, which is not an enacted obligation. The Commission also records competing concerns about engineering cost, licensed assets, cybersecurity and moderation alongside consumer interest in retaining access.

What should I troubleshoot when an offline build will not launch?
Work through the title’s documented path before trying unofficial files. A generic launcher setting cannot repair a game that still calls a retired endpoint.
- Confirm that the final supported patch is installed for the exact platform and edition.
- Launch once while connected and complete any export, entitlement-claim or account-link step required by the publisher.
- Disconnect only after the game reports a completed offline migration; keep the original save untouched.
- Read the offline-mode exclusions. A missing leaderboard, shop or online achievement may be expected rather than an installation error.
- If the game still demands authentication, check the publisher’s shutdown FAQ for a later hotfix or platform-specific exception.
- Restore the untouched save if an export failed, and avoid repeatedly overwriting it with an incomplete profile.
If no official instructions describe an offline path and the core game depends on remote services, stop before installing random “cracks” or modified clients. They may contain malware, violate rights or still lack the server-side data the game needs.

When indispensable server-side components are gone and there is no working authorized offline, LAN or dedicated-server option, the game may no longer be playable. A storage purchase, driver update, video-streaming subscription or physical disc cannot substitute for those components. Record the shutdown notice, preserve lawful local files and treat any community project as a separate, uncertain undertaking rather than a guaranteed recovery.

Does reinstalling the game after shutdown restore access?
Usually not. Reinstallation replaces local files but cannot recreate a retired authentication endpoint, cloud inventory or server-hosted game logic; it helps only when a supported offline build is already available.
Can a cloud save bring back progress from a closed service?
Only if the publisher keeps the cloud service and exposes a migration path. A cloud save may contain a profile reference rather than the complete world or entitlement data, so export instructions from the game’s publisher matter more than the existence of a backup icon.
Are private servers safe to use?
Safety varies by project. Review how the software is distributed, whether its code or releases are maintained, what credentials it requests, how it handles moderation and whether your copy and platform are supported before connecting.
