AI-generated ideas are less likely to sound generic when you give the model a specific audience, situation, goal, project facts, examples, and clear limits—and then critique and revise the first set. A broad prompt such as “Give me ideas about productivity” leaves too much open, so the model can fall back on familiar themes. Treat ideation as a guided process, not a one-line request for originality.
Why do AI-generated ideas sound generic?
A prompt like “Give me ten creative ideas for a blog” describes a category, not a problem to solve. It does not say who the ideas are for, what that audience is dealing with, what information the ideas can draw on, or what would make one useful. With those choices left unspecified, the model has room to return broadly familiar angles that could suit many projects.

Calling an idea “creative” or “original” does not supply the missing detail. Those are desired qualities, but they do not tell the model what to include or exclude. A better instruction gives it criteria it can act on: name the audience, situation, objective, available facts, constraints, and format.
There is no reliable published statistic establishing how often AI-generated ideas are generic. The practical guidance from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft focuses instead on prompt clarity, context, examples, and iteration—not on a measured rate of generic output.

What should I put in a prompt to get more specific ideas?
Give the model enough project information to distinguish this assignment from a generic one. OpenAI advises making prompts clear and specific and providing enough context; Microsoft similarly recommends grounding the task in context and leaving as little as possible open to interpretation.
Define the audience and situation
Replace a broad audience label with a useful description of what the person is doing, deciding, or struggling with. “Small-business owners” is a start; “owners of neighborhood bakeries who need to decide what to do with unsold pastries before closing” gives the model a setting and a practical tension.

Say what the ideas should help the audience accomplish, and how you will recognize a promising one. A goal such as “help readers choose a low-effort way to reduce end-of-day waste” is more actionable than “write engaging content.” Success criteria might include a clear audience, a real decision, a concrete next step, and a plausible connection to the project facts.
Supply constraints and boundaries
List restrictions that should shape the ideas: channel, tone, available evidence, budget or time limits, topics to avoid, and claims the model should not make. If a detail is unknown, say so and ask the model not to invent it. This is especially useful when the ideas must be feasible for a particular team or publication.
Include details that belong to this project
Ground the task in material that another project would not have: source excerpts, audience wording, product limitations, a location, a customer incident, a character, or an unusual combination of facts. Ask the model to use those details directly and identify assumptions rather than quietly filling gaps. More context is not automatically better; the useful context is the information that changes which ideas make sense.

How do examples make AI ideas less interchangeable?
Examples show the model what your terms mean in practice. Google recommends specific, varied examples, while the British Columbia government describes one-shot and multi-shot prompting as ways to steer tone, format, logic, and edge cases.

Give two to five examples when you can. A useful set can include one idea that meets your standard, one deliberately generic idea to avoid, and examples that take different angles while keeping a consistent structure. Explain why the strong example works and what makes the weak one fail; otherwise, the model may imitate surface features without understanding your distinction.
For instance, if you ask for ideas for a bakery, “Share tips for reducing food waste” is a broad angle. An illustrative, more situated direction might be “A closing-shift checklist for deciding which pastries to discount, donate, or record as unsold.” The contrast is not proof that the second idea is objectively original; it demonstrates how a setting and decision can make an idea easier to evaluate and develop.
Examples should guide, not trap. If every example uses the same format and angle, the model may keep reproducing them. Vary the approach—such as a checklist, a customer story, or a decision guide—while keeping the qualities you value consistent.
How should I structure the output request?
Specify a fixed number of ideas and require fields that make each one concrete. A defined structure helps you compare candidates and spot filler before it is mistaken for a usable concept.

Depending on the assignment, ask each idea to include:
- Audience: the specific reader or user it serves.
- Situation: when or where the idea applies.
- Tension: the problem, trade-off, or question that gives it a reason to exist.
- Project detail: a relevant fact from the material you supplied.
- Why now: a timely reason, if one is supported by the brief. If not, require the model to say that no timing hook is established.
- Execution note: what the idea would become in the chosen channel, such as a guide, short video, or workshop activity.
- Risk or assumption: what would need checking before developing it.
You can also ask for a short list of patterns to avoid before the draft, followed by a distinctiveness ranking with reasons. Treat the ranking as the model’s explanation, not as an objective measurement. The value is in making the criteria visible enough for a person to challenge.
What is a repeatable workflow for better AI ideas?
Use separate passes for briefing, generation, evaluation, and revision. OpenAI recommends breaking complex tasks into focused prompts and refining results through follow-up turns; its guidance also describes prompting as iterative.
- Write the brief. State audience, situation, objective, channel, constraints, tone, available facts, and what success means. Remove vague requests such as “make it viral” unless you can define what that means for this task.
- Add grounding material. Paste only the relevant source material or project facts. Tell the model to draw on those details and label any assumptions. Microsoft recommends grounding context and clear instructions; OpenAI’s API guidance also recommends adding relevant context.
- Show examples. Provide a few examples of the desired level of specificity, including a weak example if you can explain what to avoid. Keep the example format consistent enough to compare, but vary the angles.
- Request a bounded first set. Ask for a manageable number of ideas in a defined format. Require concrete details and an explanation of the audience need or tension each idea addresses.
- Run a critique pass. Ask the model to identify clichés, abstractions, duplicate angles, unsupported claims, and missing specifics. Have it point to the exact wording that triggered each concern rather than giving only a general verdict.
- Revise for changed angles. Ask for a new set that addresses the critique by changing the premise, audience situation, or format—not merely replacing adjectives. Keep a good candidate in the set only if it still meets the original brief.
- Make the human decision. Check the surviving ideas against real project facts, feasibility, and reader value. Verify claims before publication and discard ideas that depend on invented details.
What prompt template can I use?
Use this as a starting point, replacing every bracketed field with real project information. If you do not have a fact or a timely hook, say that it is unknown rather than inviting the model to fill it in.

Use these project facts: [facts]. The ideas are for [channel or format] and should use a [tone] tone. Avoid [clichés, assumptions, and overused angles]. Do not invent facts; label assumptions and say when a timely hook is not established. Each idea must include: audience, concrete setting, human tension, one relevant detail from the facts, why it matters now (if supported), and a one-sentence execution note. First list repeated or generic patterns you will avoid. Then draft the ideas. Finally, rank them by distinctiveness against [success criteria] and explain the ranking.
The number eight is an example, not a requirement. Choose a set size you can actually review. If the first results still feel bland, improve the brief, examples, or criteria; asking for “more creative” output without changing those inputs leaves the underlying ambiguity in place.

How can I tell whether an idea is specific enough?
Use an editorial test: can a reader identify the intended audience, the situation, the tension, and a concrete next step? This is a practical decision rule drawn from the emphasis on specificity, context, and evaluation in the guidance—not a published originality score.
Review each candidate against the brief rather than judging it only by how surprising it sounds. An unusual phrase can still describe an empty concept; a familiar format can be useful when it addresses a precise need and uses meaningful project detail.
- Audience: Is it clear who would care, beyond a broad demographic or industry?
- Situation: Does the idea depend on a recognizable moment, choice, or constraint?
- Tension: Is there a real problem or trade-off, rather than a vague topic?
- Grounding: Does it use supplied information accurately, or does it rely on made-up specifics?
- Action: Could someone tell what the finished piece or activity would help them do?
- Distinctness: Could the idea fit almost any brand, industry, or person without changing? If so, it probably needs more context or a sharper premise.
When several ideas pass, compare them on five dimensions: brief specificity, example quality and variety, relevance of grounding context, clarity of output structure, and whether critique and revision are built in. This comparison helps diagnose what to improve. It is not a validated scoring system, so use judgment rather than treating a numerical total as proof of originality.

Find the missing input instead of repeating the same request more emphatically. The weak part may be the brief, the examples, the supplied material, the format, or the review process.
| What you see | Likely gap | Useful adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Ideas could serve almost any audience | The audience or situation is too broad | Name the reader’s particular decision, context, or constraint. |
| Several ideas repeat one angle | The prompt does not require variation | Ask for distinct premises or formats, and request the model to flag overlap. |
| Ideas sound vivid but lack project relevance | Grounding details are missing or unused | Add relevant source material and require a specific detail from it in each idea. |
| The output is polished but vague | The requested format does not expose missing specifics | Require fields such as situation, tension, evidence, execution, and assumptions. |
| Revision changes only the wording | The critique does not specify what must change | Ask for a different angle or premise and name the weaknesses the next set must fix. |
| Ideas include confident claims you did not provide | The prompt leaves gaps open to invention | Tell the model not to invent facts, require assumptions to be labeled, and verify claims independently. |
Do not treat a large batch as a substitute for better direction. More outputs can create more material to sift through without improving the underlying brief.

What can prompting improve—and what still needs human judgment?
Prompting can make the model’s task narrower and its output easier to assess; it cannot establish that an idea is truly new, factually sound, or worth pursuing. The sources from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are practical prompt-writing guidance, not evidence that a particular workflow guarantees originality.
People still need to decide whether the audience is real, the project facts support the premise, the execution is feasible, and the idea offers something useful. Treat AI-generated concepts as candidates. Check the underlying sources, remove unsupported claims, and apply your own editorial standards before using an idea with an audience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI guarantee that an idea is original?
No. A model can help generate and vary concepts, but a prompt does not establish whether an idea has appeared elsewhere or whether it is novel in a legal or scholarly sense. Check important claims and conduct any needed originality review outside the prompt.
Should I ask for more ideas if the first batch is weak?
Not automatically. If the first set exposes a missing audience detail, absent project fact, or unclear success criterion, improve that input before requesting another batch; otherwise, the extra options may repeat the same patterns.
Is it safe to paste confidential project information into an AI prompt?
That depends on the AI service, its settings, and your organization’s rules; the prompting guidance discussed here does not establish how any particular service handles submitted data. Review the service’s current privacy terms and use approved tools before entering sensitive or confidential material.
How many examples should I include in a prompt?
There is no universal best count. A small set of two to five examples is a practical starting point when each one teaches a meaningful distinction; add examples only when they clarify the standard rather than repeating it.
