To play Minecraft Dungeons II with friends, start an online session, open the party or multiplayer screen, and share the eight-character party code shown for your current group. Each friend selects the join-by-party-code option and enters that code. The method works across platforms, from the lobby or after the game has started. You can also invite an online friend through the Friends menu when your privacy settings allow it, or use matchmaking to fill open places. Parties support up to four players, including combinations of couch players on one device and remote online players.

This guide uses the official name Minecraft Dungeons II (often written as Minecraft Dungeons 2). Menu labels can differ by platform and may change with updates, so use the party-code route when you need the clearest cross-platform path.

What co-op options does Minecraft Dungeons II support?

Minecraft Dungeons II supports local couch co-op, online multiplayer, mixed couch-and-online parties, cross-platform play, party codes, and matchmaking. The hard limit is four players in one party. A group can therefore be four people playing remotely, several people sharing one device with remote friends joining, or a purely local group.

Play arrangement Where players are How players connect Maximum group
Couch co-op On the same device Local multiplayer controls on the host device Four players total
Online co-op On separate devices Friends list, party code, or matchmaking Four players total
Mixed co-op Some players share a device; others are remote The local session is taken online, then remote players join Four players total
Cross-platform co-op Players use different supported platforms The host shares an eight-character alphanumeric party code Four players total

The party code is the most predictable option when people use different platforms or when a friend does not appear in the host’s platform-specific friends list. It identifies the current party rather than a permanent username or server address.

How do I host an online party?

Choose the online multiplayer path first, create or load your session, and then display the party code. The following sequence reflects the systems documented by Mojang; individual button names can vary with the platform and controller.

  1. Start an online game. From the game’s opening choices, select the online session or multiplayer route rather than a local-only game.
  2. Open the party or multiplayer screen. Pause or open the in-game menu, then select the area that shows your current party. Look for the control that displays or generates a party code.
  3. Copy the code exactly. The code contains eight letters and numbers. Send all eight characters to each friend, preserving their order and avoiding spaces or punctuation.
  4. Keep the session available. Friends can enter the code from the lobby or while the host is already in an ongoing game, so you do not necessarily need to return to the title screen.
  5. Check the head count. The party can contain no more than four players. If three people are already present, only one open place remains.
  6. Use a direct invite if appropriate. When the platform exposes an in-game Friends list, select an online friend and choose Invite to Game. This label comes from an independent walkthrough and may be presented differently on another platform.
  7. Fill any remaining place with matchmaking. If friends are unavailable, matchmaking can add players to an existing session or fill open slots.

Stefan Annell, technical director on Minecraft Dungeons II, describes the code as “an eight-character code made up of letters and numbers, unique to your current party.” Friends enter it in the join-by-party-code dialog and can join through the lobby or an ongoing game regardless of platform.

How does a friend join with a party code?

A joining player does not need to be on the same platform as the host. They open the multiplayer or party interface, choose the join-by-party-code option, and enter the host’s eight-character code.

  1. Receive the current code from the host. Ask for a fresh copy if a character is unclear, especially when letters and numbers look similar.
  2. Open the multiplayer screen. From the game menus, select the option for joining a party rather than starting a local session.
  3. Select “Join by party code.” The wording may be slightly different by platform, but the dialog is the field intended for the eight-character code.
  4. Enter all eight characters. Check the sequence before submitting. Do not add a player name, platform ID, or extra spaces unless the dialog specifically requests one.
  5. Confirm the join request. A successful entry takes you to the host’s lobby or current game, subject to the host’s privacy settings and the four-player limit.

If the code is rejected, first ask the host to read it again from the current party screen. A code identifies the host’s current party, so an old message may no longer describe the session you are trying to enter. If the party is already full, another player must leave before a new person can join.

How do I invite someone through the Friends menu?

The Friends-list route is convenient when both players are visible to the game and the host’s session permits direct joining. An independent walkthrough reports the sequence as opening the in-game menu, choosing Friends, selecting an online friend, and choosing Invite to Game.

  1. Start or load the online session.
  2. Open the in-game menu and select Friends, if that menu is available on your platform.
  3. Choose the friend who is shown as online.
  4. Select Invite to Game and wait for the invitation to be delivered.
  5. Have the recipient accept the invitation and use Join Game if that option appears.

The recipient may instead see a Join Game action on the friend’s session. That action depends on privacy settings, account visibility, platform integration, and whether the host still has an open place. Because the official co-op documentation describes the systems rather than every controller-specific menu path, the labels above should be treated as practical examples, not universal button instructions.

Can couch co-op and online friends play together?

Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II lets players begin a couch co-op session locally and take that session online so remote friends can join the same four-player party. This is mixed co-op: local players share one device while online players connect from their own devices.

Set up the local group

  1. Connect and sign in the local controllers you intend to use.
  2. Start the local multiplayer session and confirm which players are playing on the shared device.
  3. Switch that session to its online multiplayer path so it can accept remote players.

Add remote friends

  1. Display the party code for the now-online session.
  2. Send it to each remote friend, or use the Friends-menu invite when available.
  3. Keep the combined local and remote count at four. For example, three people on one device leave one place for a remote player.

The four-player limit applies to the combined party, not separately to local and online groups. A local pair and two remote friends use all available places.

Which joining method should I choose?

Use the method that matches your group’s platform and how much control you need over who enters. The code is generally the least dependent on platform-specific friend systems.

Method Best for What the host needs What the friend does Important limitation
Party code Cross-platform groups or friends who are not appearing in a friends list Open the current party and share eight characters Choose join by party code and enter the code The code identifies the current party; verify it if the session changes
Friends-list invite Friends already visible as online Open Friends, select a player, choose Invite to Game Accept the invitation or choose Join Game Labels and availability depend on platform and privacy settings
Matchmaking Filling unused places when friends are unavailable Allow matchmaking to search for players Join through the game’s matchmaking system You may be paired with people you did not invite
Couch co-op People in the same room Start a local session and connect controllers Join on the shared device Remote players require the session to be taken online for mixed co-op

How does cross-platform play work?

Cross-platform parties use the same party-code flow: the host shares the eight-character alphanumeric code and each player enters it in the join-by-party-code dialog. Mojang describes this as working through the lobby or an ongoing game, regardless of which platform each person uses.

The game is designed around what Mojang calls “one-click crossplay,” meaning a player should be able to start the game and connect without a platform-specific setup sequence. In practice, each participant still needs to be signed in correctly and allowed to use online multiplayer on their platform.

Use one Microsoft account for progression

Mojang says linking platform accounts to the same Microsoft account allows a player to continue with the same hero on another platform. Hero data is stored online, so progression is not tied to one device. This account continuity is separate from the invitation itself: a friend can join a party, but each player should verify that the intended account is the one carrying their hero data before switching devices.

Understand server selection

Minecraft Dungeons II uses dedicated servers and selects a server based on each player’s ping. Your group does not manually choose a region in the documented co-op instructions. If one player has a noticeably worse connection, compare network conditions and account for the game’s automatic ping-based selection rather than assuming the party code is at fault.

What should everyone check before sending an invite?

Most failed joins come from a mismatch in session type, visibility, capacity, or code entry. Run this checklist before troubleshooting deeper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Online session: The host started an online game, not a local-only session.
  • Current code: The host copied the eight-character code shown for the present party.
  • Correct dialog: The joining player selected join by party code instead of a different multiplayer option.
  • Capacity: Fewer than four players occupy the party.
  • Privacy: The host’s settings permit invitations or direct joining when using the Friends route.
  • Account sign-in: Each player is signed in to the account intended for online play and hero continuity.
  • Platform online access: Each participant can use their platform’s online multiplayer service.
  • Mixed-party count: Local and remote players together do not exceed four.

Why can’t my friend join the party?

Start with the symptom that matches what the player sees. The fixes below stay within the documented party systems and avoid assuming a platform-specific error code.

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The code is rejected immediately A character was mistyped or the code is not from the host’s current party Have the host reopen the party screen, read all eight characters, and send the code again
The code works but the friend cannot enter The party has reached four players Check the combined local and remote count and free a place if necessary
The friend cannot see an invitation The friend-list path is unavailable, the player is not shown online, or privacy settings block direct joining Use the party code and verify that both players are in online sessions
A local group cannot receive remote players The session remains local-only Take the couch session online, then display and share its party code
The same hero is missing on another device The platform accounts are not linked to the Microsoft account that stores the hero Sign in with and link the intended Microsoft account before continuing
One player has poor connection quality The dedicated server selected by ping may be farther from that player or their network may be unstable Check each player’s connection and retry the online session; server selection is automatic

If the Friends-menu invite fails but the party code works, the problem is likely with visibility or platform integration rather than the party itself. Conversely, if neither route works, confirm that the host really started an online session and that the party has an open place.

Can matchmaking add people to an existing party?

Yes. Matchmaking can add players to an existing session or fill open slots when friends are unavailable. It is useful when you want to start without waiting for a complete friend group, but it gives you less control over who joins than a direct invitation or a private code shared only with chosen friends.

Because the party maximum is four, matchmaking should be treated as a way to occupy unused places, not as a way to expand the group beyond the cap. In a mixed session, its available places are whatever remains after counting everyone on the shared device and everyone already connected online.

Does the game edition change how co-op works?

The official Minecraft Help information identifies Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition as the only physical copy. That edition includes the base game, cosmetics, and access to two post-launch downloadable-content packs when available. This is a retail-format and content detail, not a separate party-size rule; verify current regional availability before buying because inventory and release timing can vary.

Whether you own a physical or digital copy, the co-op systems described here still depend on the online session, account sign-in, privacy controls, and the four-player party limit. Do not assume that owning an edition automatically links a platform account or transfers a hero; those functions are tied to the Microsoft-account setup described above.

What should I remember when inviting friends?

For a same-platform group with visible online friends, the Friends menu may be quickest. For a cross-platform group, a couch-and-online mix, or a friend who cannot see your profile, share the current eight-character party code. Keep the total party at four, make sure the host is online, and enter the code in the dedicated join-by-party-code dialog. If the code route fails, check the code, session type, privacy, account sign-in, and available places in that order.

The official co-op guidance was published on September 29, 2026. Menu names, privacy controls, platform requirements, matchmaking behavior, and retail availability can change with patches or differ by region, so treat the exact button labels as version- and platform-dependent while relying on the stable systems: four-player parties, eight-character cross-platform codes, mixed co-op, matchmaking, and online hero storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same hero when I move from one platform to another?

Yes, provided the platform accounts are linked to the same Microsoft account. Mojang says hero data is stored online, so progression can follow that account instead of remaining on one device.

Is a party code tied to my friend’s username?

No. It is an eight-character alphanumeric code unique to the current party. Send the code shown in the host’s active party rather than reusing a code from an earlier session.

Can I invite a friend after the game has already started?

Yes. The documented party-code system allows a friend to join through the lobby or an ongoing game. The host still needs an open place and online-session visibility for the join to succeed.

What happens if my local group already has three players?

The four-player cap counts everyone together, including couch and remote participants. A three-person local group therefore has one remaining place for an online friend or a matchmaking player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might the menu wording differ from a guide?

Mojang documents the underlying systems rather than a complete controller-by-controller sequence for every platform. Updates and platform interfaces can change labels, so look for the functions—Friends, Invite to Game, Join Game, or join by party code—even when the wording is not identical.
