How to Invest in AI Without Buying Private Startup Shares

You can gain public-market exposure to artificial intelligence without buying shares in a private startup in two main ways: purchase shares of listed companies whose products, infrastructure or investments involve AI, or buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that owns a portfolio of publicly traded companies. Both routes give you an interest in the public security you purchase—not direct ownership of a private AI developer. Your access, taxes, regulations and suitable risk level depend on your country and circumstances, so treat this as an educational framework rather than a personal recommendation.

What does investing in AI without private startup shares actually mean?

It means using a brokerage or investment account to buy securities that trade on a public exchange. The security may be a single company share or an ETF share. The listed company could sell AI software, manufacture chips, operate data-center infrastructure, supply electricity or cooling equipment, or simply invest in AI projects as one part of a much larger business.

An ETF pools money into a portfolio and trades throughout the exchange day. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov ETF glossary puts the ownership point precisely: "Each ETF share represents an investor’s part ownership of the ETF’s portfolio and the income the portfolio generates." That ownership is of the fund’s holdings, not of a private startup that one of those holdings may partner with or finance.

Public-market exposure can therefore be indirect and layered. A company described as “AI-related” might earn most of its revenue from non-AI products, while an ETF with “AI” in its name may hold a concentrated group of semiconductor, software or infrastructure issuers. The issuer’s filings, fund prospectus and current holdings are more reliable than a label or headline.

What are the two basic public-market routes?

Choose between direct exposure to one listed issuer and pooled exposure through a fund. The right comparison is not “stock versus ETF” in the abstract; it is the specific company or fund, its mandate, concentration, costs and risks.

Route What you own How AI may appear What to inspect first Main trade-off
Individual listed-company share A security issued by one public company AI products, infrastructure, research, customers or investments Annual and current filings, segment information, material risks and the company’s own description of AI exposure More company-specific upside and downside; diversification depends on your other holdings
AI or technology ETF A proportional interest in the fund’s portfolio and its income A rules-based index or an active manager may select several AI-related layers Prospectus, strategy, current holdings, position weights, expenses, turnover and overlap with your existing funds One trade can spread exposure, but a narrow theme can still be highly concentrated
Sector or infrastructure ETF A portfolio focused on a defined industry or theme Semiconductors, power infrastructure, data-center suppliers or other enablers Definition of the sector, eligibility rules and the largest positions Exposure may be economically important to AI but not tied to AI revenue alone

These categories are not mutually exclusive. A broad technology fund may hold companies that an AI-specific fund also owns, creating more overlap than the number of fund names suggests.

How can an individual public-company share provide AI exposure?

Start with the company’s economics, not its association with a fashionable technology. AI can affect a listed issuer in several distinct ways, and each has a different dependence on successful AI adoption.

AI products and services

Some issuers sell software, models, cloud capacity or services that incorporate machine learning. Read the company’s filings to see whether AI revenue is separately reported, bundled into a broader segment or described only as a growth initiative. If the company does not quantify AI sales, you cannot responsibly translate an AI reference into a specific percentage of revenue or profit.

AI infrastructure and enablers

Chip designers, manufacturers, networking suppliers, data-center operators, power providers and cooling-equipment makers can benefit when customers build AI capacity. Their results may still depend on non-AI markets, capital spending cycles, a small number of buyers or upstream suppliers. Infrastructure exposure is therefore a different thesis from owning an AI application developer.

AI adopters

An “adopter” uses AI to improve an existing business rather than selling AI as its primary product. An SEC-filed methodology from Alger distinguishes “AI Enablers” from “AI Adopters” and notes that public-company AI exposure is not universally transparent. Treat those terms as a way to investigate a company’s role, not as a guarantee that adoption will raise earnings.

Corporate investments and partnerships

A public company may invest in, buy a stake in or partner with a private AI startup. Buying the public company’s share still gives you ownership of the listed company. Any economic benefit from the relationship depends on the listed company’s accounting, contractual rights, results and disclosures; it is not equivalent to owning the startup’s private shares.

How do AI-focused ETFs differ from one another?

Two funds can use the same theme while selecting very different securities. An issuer currently presents separate offerings around AI and technology, semiconductors, power infrastructure and actively managed AI technology. Those are examples of distinct approaches, not endorsements or a promise that any fund will track the same opportunity.

Broad AI and technology mandates

A broad mandate may include software, hardware, cloud, communications and other technology companies. It can spread exposure across business models, but the largest positions may still dominate returns. Read the eligibility rules and the current weight of each holding.

Semiconductor mandates

Chip-focused funds target a critical AI input. They can be sensitive to inventory cycles, fabrication capacity, export controls, customer concentration and the difference between designing chips and manufacturing them. A semiconductor label does not automatically mean the fund owns every part of the supply chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power and infrastructure mandates

AI data centers require electricity, networking, buildings and cooling. A power-infrastructure fund may therefore benefit from related capital spending while owning utilities, equipment makers or real-estate businesses whose other drivers are unrelated to AI. Check the fund’s definition of “infrastructure” rather than assuming a pure AI mandate.

Active AI-technology funds

An active manager can depart from a fixed index and change positions as the manager’s view changes. The prospectus should explain the research process, permissible securities, risk limits and turnover. Past manager decisions do not establish future results.

Is an AI-themed ETF automatically diversified?

No. Investor.gov warns that a narrowly focused fund may not provide diversification and recommends examining holdings and overlap with other funds. An ETF can hold dozens of securities while still depending heavily on a few large issuers or one industry.

Open the latest holdings file or fund website and record the largest positions, their weights and the number of holdings. Then compare those names with your existing broad-market, technology or sector funds. Owning three thematic ETFs that all hold the same large companies can increase concentration without making it obvious from account screens.

  • Issuer concentration: calculate how much of the portfolio sits in its top positions.
  • Industry concentration: identify whether software, semiconductors, utilities or another segment dominates.
  • Geographic concentration: check where the companies are listed and earn revenue.
  • Overlap: compare the fund’s holdings with every other fund and stock you own.
  • Mandate drift: read the prospectus to understand what the manager may buy when market conditions change.

Holdings change, so a screen captured on one date is not a permanent description. Verify the date of the holdings information and review the fund’s disclosures again before trading.

How should you research a public AI stock or ETF before buying?

Use primary disclosures and document the decision you are making. Investor.gov identifies the SEC’s EDGAR database as a free source for company and fund filings and advises checking an investment professional’s registration and background.

  1. Define the exposure you want. Decide whether you are investigating an application company, an AI enabler, a semiconductor supplier, power infrastructure or a mixed portfolio. If you cannot state the exposure in one sentence, the theme is not yet specific enough to compare.
  2. Read the company filing or ETF prospectus. For a stock, look for business segments, material risks, customer dependence and how management describes AI. For a fund, read the investment objective, principal strategies, permitted holdings and methodology.
  3. Check current holdings and weights. Record the fund’s holdings as of their stated date, or identify which business segment actually carries the AI connection for a company. Do not infer holdings from the fund name alone.
  4. Measure overlap with what you already own. List repeated issuers and add their approximate weights across accounts where you can. Overlap can make a supposedly broad allocation much narrower.
  5. Verify costs and trading conditions. Confirm the current expense ratio, brokerage charges, bid-ask spread, minimums, creation or redemption features where relevant, and any account restrictions. Comparable current fee figures are not established for the products discussed here, so use the latest documents rather than an old article.
  6. Read the risk section in full. Match stated risks to your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses and need for liquidity. An AI label is not a return forecast.
  7. Check access and professional credentials. Confirm that the security is available in your country and account type. If you use an adviser or other investment professional, verify registration and disciplinary history through the resources recommended by Investor.gov.
  8. Write down what would invalidate your thesis. Examples include a company disclosing that AI is immaterial to revenue, a fund changing its methodology, or a concentration level becoming inconsistent with your plan. This turns a theme into a reviewable decision.

What should you compare when evaluating two AI investments?

Compare the actual securities on the same dimensions. A fund’s lower company-specific risk may be offset by a narrow sector mandate, while a single stock’s apparent simplicity may hide dependence on one product or customer.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Exposure Is the security an individual issuer, broad AI theme, semiconductor portfolio, power-infrastructure portfolio or another layer? Different layers respond to different demand, pricing and regulatory conditions.
Selection method Does an index apply published rules, or does an active manager choose holdings? Rules determine eligibility and rebalancing; active judgment can change positions and turnover.
Holdings and concentration How many holdings are there, what are the top weights and how much overlap exists with your portfolio? A thematic label does not ensure diversification.
Costs and trading What are the current expenses, brokerage costs, spread and trading conditions? Costs reduce returns and trading friction can matter when buying or selling.
Risks and fit Which risks does the issuer disclose, and do they fit your horizon and tolerance for loss? Volatility and business risks differ across companies and themes.
Geography and access Can you buy the security legally through your account, and what currency and local rules apply? Availability, tax treatment and investor protections vary by jurisdiction.

If a table cell cannot be verified from a current filing or prospectus, mark it as “not stated” and investigate further instead of filling the gap with an assumption.

What risks are specific or especially relevant to public AI exposure?

Public-market access removes the private-share barrier, not investment risk. A prospectus dated July 21, 2026, for Direxion funds lists examples relevant to AI-related investments. These are disclosed examples, not a complete list for every company or fund.

Issuer and valuation volatility

AI enthusiasm can move the prices of listed issuers quickly in either direction. A company can report strong technology progress while its share price falls because expectations, interest rates or competing products changed. Do not treat a thematic narrative as evidence of a sustainable valuation.

Supply-chain and capacity problems

Hardware and infrastructure businesses may depend on specialized suppliers, fabrication capacity, electricity, networking equipment or construction schedules. A delay or shortage can affect deliveries and margins even when customer demand remains high.

Customer concentration

A company may rely on a small number of large buyers. Losing one contract, facing a customer’s budget cut or seeing a customer develop an alternative can have an outsized effect on results. Check concentration disclosures where the issuer provides them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing AI regulation

Rules governing data, safety, privacy, export controls, model use and liability can change across jurisdictions. Regulation can raise compliance costs, restrict a product or create opportunities for a different business model. The relevant exposure depends on the security’s countries, customers and products.

Responsible-AI and reputation issues

Prospectus risk language also identifies responsible-AI concerns. A model’s output, training data, copyright dispute or alleged misuse can trigger litigation, remediation costs or lost customers. The risk applies differently to a model developer, an infrastructure supplier and an adopter.

Indirect exposure risk

When a public company invests in or partners with a private startup, the public shareholder does not receive the startup’s shares, voting rights or direct economics. The relationship can be valuable, immaterial or unsuccessful, and the public company’s disclosures may not provide a detailed valuation of it.

How can investors outside the United States obtain international AI exposure?

The available routes depend on your country, broker and local regulation. Investor.gov explains that a U.S. investor can commonly purchase U.S.-traded foreign-company shares through a U.S. broker, often using American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), and can use U.S.-registered ETFs for international exposure.

Before trading an ADR or overseas-focused ETF, confirm the exact listing, currency, custody arrangement, fees, trading hours, tax documents and investor protections. A product available to a U.S. account may be unavailable or regulated differently elsewhere. Non-U.S. readers should check their own regulator and broker rather than assuming that a U.S. listing is accessible.

What costs, taxes and account rules should you check?

No single cost schedule applies to all public AI investments. For a fund, read the current expense table and trading disclosures. For a stock, review brokerage commissions or platform charges, bid-ask spread and any currency-conversion cost. Even when a platform advertises commission-free trading, other charges can remain.

Tax treatment is jurisdiction-specific and can differ between dividends, fund distributions, capital gains, ADR fees and foreign withholding. The materials establishing the public-market routes do not determine your personal tax result. Obtain current guidance from your tax authority or a qualified professional before acting, especially when holding foreign securities.

Account eligibility also matters. A broker may restrict certain foreign listings, leveraged products, options or funds to investors who meet local rules. Confirm the product’s legal documents and your account’s permissions before placing an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which route fits a particular decision?

Use the following as a decision framework, not a recommendation. It keeps the choice tied to what you are trying to own.

When a single listed company may be the clearer research subject

An individual share may be easier to analyze when you understand the issuer’s business, can tolerate company-specific volatility and want to decide exactly which AI connection you are buying. You must accept that one product, customer, supplier or regulatory event can dominate results.

When a fund may simplify implementation

An ETF can place several issuers in one trade and make rebalancing the manager’s responsibility. That convenience does not remove the need to inspect holdings, overlap, expenses and concentration. A narrow fund can still behave like a sector bet.

When neither route answers the question

If you cannot explain how the security earns money, what its largest exposures are or which risks could impair it, pause rather than buying because of the AI label. A public-market route is only useful when the underlying exposure is understandable and available under your rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the practical checklist before placing an order?

  • Confirm the security’s legal name, exchange and trading currency.
  • Read the latest filing or prospectus, including principal risks.
  • Identify the specific AI layer: application, adopter, enabler, semiconductor, power or another category.
  • Check current holdings, top weights and overlap with your existing investments.
  • Verify expenses, spreads, commissions, currency charges and account eligibility.
  • Review geographic, tax and regulatory implications for your residence.
  • Decide how much loss and volatility your plan can withstand.
  • Set a date to revisit the thesis when holdings, strategy or regulations change.

The public route is straightforward to access, but the quality of the decision comes from identifying what you actually own and how it can fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy an AI ETF through any brokerage account?

Not necessarily. A broker may limit products by residence, account type, investor classification or local regulation, and a U.S.-listed fund may not be offered in another country. Confirm availability and the fund’s legal documents inside your own account before assuming you can trade it.

How often do ETF holdings change?

The answer depends on the fund’s index rules or active mandate. Rebalancing schedules and manager discretion are described in the prospectus, so check both that document and the dated holdings file rather than relying on a permanent list copied from an older article.

Where can I check whether an investment professional is registered?

Investor.gov directs readers to registration and background resources for investment professionals. Use those official tools and review the person or firm’s current status and disclosed history before paying for advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might an AI company’s filing not show a separate AI revenue line?

AI may be embedded in a broader software, cloud, hardware or services segment rather than reported as its own business. In that case, the filing can establish that management discusses AI but may not support a precise estimate of its contribution to sales or profit.
