You can invest in AI chips without choosing individual companies by buying an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that pools investments across a group of semiconductor or AI-related businesses. The main choices are a semiconductor-sector ETF for more direct industry exposure, a broader AI fund for exposure across the AI value chain, or a narrower fund focused on inference chips or chipmaking equipment. The right fit depends on the exposure you want—not just the fund’s name—so check its mandate, holdings, fees, trading liquidity, and risks before buying.
What does investing in AI chips through an ETF mean?
An ETF holds a portfolio of investments and lets you buy and sell shares of that portfolio through a brokerage account. Instead of selecting one chip company, you own shares in a fund whose mandate determines which companies it may hold. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains that ETFs pool investor money and can provide diversification; it also cautions that an ETF’s market trading price can differ from its net asset value (NAV), the per-share value of the underlying portfolio.

That diversification has limits. A fund may spread your investment across multiple issuers while still concentrating it in one industry, one part of the AI supply chain, or a few large holdings. An ETF’s label is not a promise of a particular level of AI-chip exposure. Read its objective and inspect its actual holdings.
Which kind of fund gives me the exposure I want?
Start by deciding whether you want semiconductor companies broadly, AI businesses across several industries, or a narrower slice of chip design or manufacturing. Those mandates can behave differently, even when all the funds use AI-related language.

| Route | What it targets | Source-backed example | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semiconductor-sector ETF | Companies in the semiconductor sector; the most direct of these routes to broad chip-industry exposure. | iShares says SOXX seeks to track a U.S. equity index of semiconductor-sector companies. | Index eligibility rules, current holdings, concentration, costs, and whether the fund’s geographic scope matches your needs. |
| Broader AI value-chain ETF | Companies across the AI value chain, of which semiconductors are only one part. | iShares describes ARTY as providing exposure to the full AI value chain. | How much of the portfolio is actually in chip-related businesses, and how much is in other parts of the AI ecosystem. |
| Actively managed AI ETF | Companies developing advanced AI technologies across the AI tech stack, selected through active management. | iShares describes BAI as an actively managed ETF seeking that exposure. | How the manager selects holdings, the fund’s current positions, fees, and how its results may differ from a benchmark. |
| AI-inference chip ETF | A narrower theme focused on companies associated with AI inference chips. | The SEC summary prospectus dated August 13, 2026, says Defiance Inference AI Chip ETF (AINF) seeks to track the BITA AI Inference Chip Select Index. | Index rules, current holdings, concentration, fund costs, liquidity, and the risks of a narrow theme. |
| AI-chip manufacturing enablers ETF | Businesses that enable AI-chip production, including wafer-fabrication equipment, advanced packaging, and metrology. | The SEC prospectus dated September 21, 2026, describes REX AI Chipmaking ETF (CHIP) as focused on an index of these companies. | Whether the fund’s holdings match your intended exposure, along with foreign-securities, concentration, liquidity, volatility, and new-fund risks. |
The examples illustrate different mandates, not a ranking. The cited provider materials and prospectuses do not establish a common comparison of current holdings, expense ratios, liquidity, performance, or operating history across all five funds. Obtain current documents for each fund before comparing them.
When might a semiconductor-sector fund make sense?
Consider this route if you want exposure centered on the semiconductor industry rather than a portfolio spanning the whole AI value chain. It still does not mean equal exposure to every chip business: index construction and issuer weightings determine what the fund owns and how much each position matters. Review the latest holdings file and index methodology to see whether the actual portfolio fits your plan.
When might a broader AI fund make sense?
A broader AI fund may fit an investor who wants exposure to companies across multiple parts of the AI ecosystem and accepts that chips are only one component. It is less chip-specific by design. If your goal is primarily chip exposure, check the holdings rather than assuming the fund’s AI theme delivers it.
What do the narrower AI-chip funds focus on?
AINF’s stated objective is tied to an index of AI inference chips, while CHIP’s stated focus is on businesses enabling AI-chip manufacturing. These are distinct points in the technology supply chain. A narrow mandate can make a fund’s theme more specific, but it does not establish that the fund is more diversified, less risky, or better suited to your portfolio.

How do I compare fees, holdings, and fund structure?
Use the latest prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file, and index methodology—not the fund name alone. The SEC recommends considering the fees you will pay, the specific risks, how the index is constructed, and how the strategy fits your goals.
Compare the full cost, not just one fee figure
AINF’s SEC summary prospectus dated August 13, 2026, lists a 0.65% management fee and 0.65% total annual fund operating expenses. Its prospectus gives an example of $66 in expenses on a $10,000 investment over one year under the assumptions stated in that prospectus. That example is specific to AINF and those assumptions; it is not a quote for every investor or a cost comparison with the other funds in this article.

For any ETF, distinguish the fund’s ongoing operating expenses from what you may pay to trade. Brokerage commissions, if any, and the bid-ask spread are separate considerations. The spread is the gap between the price available to buy and the price available to sell at a given time. Review your brokerage’s fee schedule and the live quote rather than assuming the prospectus fee captures every trading cost.
Check the mandate, index rules, and management method
A passive ETF generally seeks to follow an index; an actively managed fund gives its manager discretion to select or weight investments. For an index fund, find out how companies qualify, how the index is weighted, and when it is rebalanced. For an active fund, review its stated approach and holdings. These details help explain what the fund can own and why its exposure may change.

Look for concentration and overlap
Check the number of holdings, the weight of the largest positions, and whether the ETF owns many of the same companies as funds you already hold. A portfolio with many line items can still depend heavily on a handful of companies, and adding a thematic ETF may increase exposure you already have through a broad technology or market fund. Decide how much additional concentration you are willing to accept before placing an order.
Review geography, derivatives, and liquidity
Read the prospectus for the fund’s geographic scope, foreign-securities risks, and permissions to use derivatives. These features affect the kind of exposure and risks you take on; they should not be inferred from a fund’s name. Also consider whether the ETF trades actively enough for your intended order size and compare its market price with NAV. Market price can diverge from NAV, and a wider bid-ask spread can make trading more costly.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Be cautious about a short operating record
A new ETF may not have meaningful performance or turnover history. Do not treat the absence of a long record as evidence that its strategy has been tested through different market conditions. In that case, place more weight on the prospectus, stated mandate, index rules, holdings, and the fund’s risks.
How can I buy an AI-chip ETF without choosing stocks?
Use the brokerage account where you normally trade ETFs, but make the fund-selection and order decisions before you submit a trade. This workflow helps separate the question of what exposure you want from the mechanics of buying it.

- Set the role and size of the investment. Decide whether the ETF is intended as a focused sector position or part of a broader portfolio. Set a maximum allocation you can tolerate, taking account of any technology exposure you already have.
- Find the fund’s official documents. On the fund provider’s page or the SEC’s filing system, obtain the current prospectus, shareholder report, and holdings file. Confirm the fund’s objective, index or active-management approach, principal risks, fees, geographic exposure, and any derivatives permissions.
- Compare holdings and overlap. Inspect the portfolio rather than relying on a ticker, theme, or marketing description. Compare the top positions and sector exposure with the funds and investments you already own.
- Check trading conditions. Before entering an order, review the live bid and ask, the bid-ask spread, and the ETF’s market price relative to NAV. Consider whether current liquidity is appropriate for your order.
- Place an order that matches your plan. Enter the ticker carefully, confirm the order size and order details in your brokerage interface, and avoid borrowing to amplify a position in a volatile sector.
- Review on a schedule. Revisit holdings, fees, index changes, and fund filings periodically. A planned review is more useful than changing your position in response to every AI headline.
What risks should I consider before investing?
AI-chip and semiconductor ETFs can remain volatile and concentrated even though they hold more than one company. Their value can fall, and a thematic label does not guarantee a specific amount of exposure to the business you have in mind. The prospectus is the place to identify risks that are particular to a fund.
Industry and concentration risk
A fund focused on semiconductors or a narrow AI-chip theme may be affected by developments in that industry and may have a substantial share of assets in a small number of issuers. CHIP’s SEC prospectus dated September 21, 2026, identifies AI-industry, concentration, and volatility risks. Review the top holdings and weights to understand how much the fund depends on individual companies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesForeign-market and liquidity risk
CHIP’s prospectus also identifies foreign-securities and liquidity risks. A fund’s exposure to foreign issuers or less-liquid investments can affect how it trades and how its value responds to market conditions. Consult the fund’s current disclosures rather than assuming that a U.S.-listed ETF holds only U.S. companies.
New-fund and market-maker risks
CHIP’s prospectus identifies market-maker and new-fund risks as well. A new fund may have a limited trading and operating record, while trading conditions can affect the price at which you buy or sell. These disclosures are specific examples from CHIP’s prospectus, not a statement that every risk applies identically to every ETF.

Fraud and exaggerated AI claims
The SEC, North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) warned in 2024 that promoters may exploit enthusiasm for AI. Their alert says: “Be wary of claims — even from registered firms and professionals — that AI can guarantee amazing investment returns.” Verify that an investment professional and platform are registered, and reject pitches promising that a proprietary AI trading system cannot lose.
What should I decide before placing an order?
- Exposure: Do you want the semiconductor industry, the wider AI value chain, AI inference chips, or chipmaking enablers?
- Concentration: How much will the ETF add to the technology and company exposure you already own?
- Costs: What are the fund’s ongoing expenses, and what trading commissions and bid-ask spread may apply?
- Construction: Is the fund passive or active, and do you understand its index rules or selection approach?
- Risk: Have you read the fund’s principal risks, including any that apply to foreign securities, liquidity, volatility, or a new operating history?
- Execution: Have you checked the current holdings, quote, and price relative to NAV before deciding on an order?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ETF eliminate the risk of losing money on AI chips?
No. An ETF can spread exposure across holdings, but its share price can still fall, especially when its mandate concentrates on a volatile industry or theme. Diversification across issuers is not the same as diversification across the whole market.
Is an ETF’s market price always the same as its NAV?
No. ETF shares trade in the market, so the price available to buy or sell can differ from the per-share value of the underlying portfolio. The gap can matter when you place an order, which is why checking the live quote is useful.
Can a fund’s AI label tell me how much of it is invested in chips?
No. A broad AI fund may include businesses across the AI value chain, with semiconductors forming only one part of the portfolio. Use the latest holdings and stated mandate to determine the fund’s actual exposure.
Can anyone guarantee returns from an AI-chip investment?
No legitimate fund mandate makes investment returns certain. In a 2024 alert, the SEC, NASAA, and FINRA specifically warned investors to be wary of claims that AI can guarantee amazing returns.
