You can install LineageOS safely only when your phone appears in the official LineageOS device list and you follow the complete installation page for its exact model, codename and regional variant. The process normally unlocks the bootloader (wiping the phone), flashes the recovery image named by that guide, formats data, and sideloads the matching LineageOS build. Back up irreplaceable files first, verify the stock phone and your computer, and stop immediately whenever a command or check fails. Do not reuse recovery images, firmware, partition targets or commands from another device.
What does a safe LineageOS installation require?
A safe installation is a controlled sequence, not simply downloading a ZIP and flashing it. LineageOS instructions vary with the phone’s model, codename, manufacturer, partition layout, firmware level, recovery filename and bootloader policy. The matching device page is therefore the authority for every file and command.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe official guidance also makes the risk explicit: Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will erase all data on your device!
Treat the phone as if every local file will disappear before you begin. LineageOS also states: LineageOS is provided as-is with no warranty. While we attempt to verify everything works you are installing at your own risk!
How do I confirm that my phone is compatible?
Start with the exact hardware identity, not the marketing name. Two phones sold under a similar name can use different partitions, radios or unlock procedures.

Find the exact model and codename
- Open the official LineageOS device list and locate your phone.
- Compare the listed codename, model number and variant with the information in the stock operating system and on the device label or original packaging.
- Open that device’s installation page and read every section once before downloading anything.
- Check whether the page names a required stock firmware or vendor version. Do not proceed if your phone is on an unlisted or incompatible firmware level.
Use only the recovery image, LineageOS ZIP and any firmware linked on that exact page. A file for a visually similar model can flash successfully yet leave the radio, partitions or boot process unusable.
Validate the stock phone before changing it
Boot the phone normally and test the functions you depend on:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Place and receive calls and send and receive SMS.
- Test Wi-Fi calling or LTE calling when your carrier and phone support them.
- Confirm cameras, storage, charging and other essential hardware work.
- Enable USB debugging in Developer options.
- Where the device page requires it, enable OEM unlocking.
- Connect the phone to your computer and confirm that
adbcan see it while Android is running.
Remove Google accounts when the device instructions tell you to do so. This reduces the chance that factory-reset protection will block activation after the bootloader wipe. Keep the phone’s screen unlocked and accept the USB-debugging authorization prompt when Android asks.
How should I back up before unlocking the bootloader?
Unlocking is expected to erase user data, so complete and inspect a second copy before you issue the unlock command. A backup that exists only on the phone is not a backup for this procedure.

Files and credentials to preserve
- Photos, videos, downloads and documents.
- Contacts, calendars, notes and messages that are not already synchronized.
- Authenticator accounts, recovery codes, passkeys and other two-factor credentials. Export them using each service’s supported method and verify that the export can be opened or restored.
- Application data that your apps do not synchronize automatically.
- Device-specific items such as eSIM information or carrier activation details, if your carrier requires them.
Copy the data to a computer, a cloud account or external USB storage, then open several files from the copy. Do not assume an OEM backup package will be readable after LineageOS is installed; proprietary formats may depend on the original operating system.
Make the backup resilient
- Keep one copy away from the phone and a second copy in a different location.
- Record account recovery methods before the reset, not after it.
- Leave the original phone untouched until you have confirmed that the copied files and exported credentials are usable.
- Charge the phone and the computer before unlocking. A power loss during flashing can leave recovery work to do.
Which computer and phone settings are needed?
Install current Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and fastboot tools on the computer. The commands are the same concepts on Windows, Linux and macOS, but Windows may require a device driver. Use a known-good USB data cable; a cable that only charges cannot carry ADB or fastboot traffic.
- Install or update the platform-tools package supplied for your operating system.
- On the phone, open Developer options, enable USB debugging and enable OEM unlocking if that switch is present and the device page requires it.
- Connect the phone while Android is running, accept the RSA authorization prompt, and run
adb devices. - Confirm that the device appears as authorized before moving on. If it is listed as unauthorized, unlock the phone and accept the prompt rather than continuing.
- Keep the exact device page open while you work so you can copy its recovery filename, partition target and sideload command without substitution.
What happens when I unlock the bootloader?
Bootloader unlocking permits unsigned or alternate operating-system components to be installed, but it triggers the factory reset described in the official warning. The exact method is manufacturer-specific.
| Unlock approach | What the device guide may require | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Fastboot command | fastboot flashing unlock when the page specifies it |
Confirm the on-device warning and expect a complete data wipe. |
| OEM unlock-token flow | Request a token through the manufacturer’s official process, then enter it using the command named by the guide | Token eligibility, waiting periods or regional restrictions can apply. |
| Sony unlock-code process | Obtain and use the code and commands for the exact Sony model | Some Sony guides warn that DRM keys in the TA partition can be lost. |
Never guess an unlock command from a different model. When the phone reboots and resets, Android setup begins again; re-enable USB debugging before you return to ADB or fastboot work.

Why does fastboot not detect my phone?
First make sure the phone is actually in bootloader or fastboot mode, then check the physical connection and the host driver. Do not continue to flashing until the computer reports the expected device.
Use the device page’s reboot method
If the guide specifies it, from an authorized Android session run adb -d reboot bootloader. Once the bootloader screen appears, run fastboot devices. The result should include a device identifier; an empty result means the host has not detected the phone.
Work through the connection checks
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable directly to the computer, avoiding an unpowered hub.
- Try another known-good USB data cable and another port. Some official guides specifically suggest a USB Type-A 2.0 cable or hub when newer ports or adapters fail to negotiate correctly.
- On Windows, open Device Manager. The phone should appear without a warning triangle; install the correct driver for that device if it does not.
- On Linux or macOS, verify that the platform-tools installation is current and that no other process is holding the USB device.
- Run
fastboot devicesagain. If it still returns nothing or hangs, stop and resolve the connection rather than trying another flash command.
A USB connector can fit physically while lacking data support, and a driver can work in Android mode but fail in fastboot mode. Treat those as separate checks.
What is the correct LineageOS installation sequence?
Follow the matching device page in order. The names below describe the usual sequence; the device page controls the exact partition, filename and command.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Unlock and accept the wipe. Use only the manufacturer’s method listed for your model. Wait for the reset to complete fully.
- Return to the bootloader and restore debugging. Complete Android’s initial setup only as far as needed, then enable USB debugging again if the guide requires ADB for the next step.
- Flash the specified Lineage Recovery. The target may be
boot, recoveryor another explicitly named partition. Use the recovery image linked on the exact device page and the command shown there; do not infer a target from another phone. - Boot directly into recovery. Use the key combination or fastboot command in the device guide immediately after flashing. Do not allow the stock system to boot and overwrite the new recovery when the page warns against it.
- Confirm the LineageOS recovery screen. If a different recovery appears, stop and check the model, image and boot sequence.
- Format the encrypted user data. In recovery select Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset, and confirm. This is separate from merely wiping a cache or performing a normal reboot.
- Enter ADB sideload mode. Return to the main recovery menu and choose Apply Update followed by Apply from ADB.
- Sideload the matching build. On the computer, run the exact
adb -d sideloadcommand documented by the device page, using the ZIP downloaded from that page. - Complete any remaining device-specific steps. Some pages require firmware, boot-slot, vendor or other operations. Finish every required section before the first system boot.
- Reboot only when the guide says to. Rebooting early can leave required partitions or add-ons uninstalled.
Read the whole page again if any screen, filename or command differs from the instructions. One device guide notes that its instructions are for LineageOS 22.2 and will work only when every section and step is followed precisely; version-specific wording like that takes precedence over generic advice.
How do I install Google Apps or other add-ons?
Add-ons are optional. If you want Google Apps or another package, download the architecture-matched file specified by the same device page and install it from recovery before the first LineageOS boot.
- Remain in recovery after sideloading LineageOS.
- Choose Apply Update and Apply from ADB again.
- Sideload the add-on package in the order the device page gives.
- Install only packages intended for that device architecture and LineageOS version.
- Reboot to the system after all required packages are complete.
If you do not need an add-on, skip it. Do not mix packages from an unrelated phone guide, and do not boot the new system first if the page says an add-on must be installed beforehand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when an installation step fails?
Stop at the first failure. The official guidance says to read every section, follow every step precisely and not continue after something fails.

| Symptom | Likely checks | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
The phone is missing from adb devices |
USB debugging authorization, cable, port, platform-tools installation | Boot Android, unlock the screen, accept the RSA prompt and retest with a data cable. |
The phone is missing from fastboot devices |
Wrong mode, Windows driver, cable or USB compatibility | Return to the specified bootloader mode, inspect Device Manager on Windows, change cable or port, and stop if detection does not return. |
| Recovery does not appear after flashing | Wrong model image, wrong partition target or booting the stock system first | Do not flash another image at random. Recheck the exact device page and repeat only the documented recovery procedure. |
| Sideload progress stops near 47% | Normal progress-display behavior on some device guides | Check the recovery result and device-page instructions; a percentage near 47% can still represent a completed sideload on some guides. |
| Signature verification fails | Corrupted, incomplete or unofficial package | Cancel the operation, redownload the recovery or ZIP from the linked device page and retry. Do not bypass verification. |
| The guide requests an unlisted firmware or package | Wrong regional variant, outdated stock firmware or mismatched download | Stop and resolve the compatibility requirement before continuing. |
How do installation methods differ between manufacturers?
The broad workflow is similar, but the risk and command details are not interchangeable.
| Decision point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Unlock policy | Some phones accept a fastboot unlock command; others require an online token or a manufacturer-issued code. |
| Protected keys | Some models, including certain Sony devices, warn that unlocking can remove DRM keys stored in the TA partition. |
| Recovery target | The image may belong in boot, recovery or another partition. Flashing the wrong target can prevent recovery from starting. |
| Firmware and vendor level | A build may require a particular stock firmware or vendor version before LineageOS is installed. |
| Add-on order | Google Apps and other packages must match the architecture and be installed before the first boot when the guide requires it. |
| Host troubleshooting | Windows commonly adds a driver check; Linux and macOS usually focus on platform-tools and USB permissions or connection conflicts. |
What should I check after the first boot?
Complete the initial LineageOS setup, reconnect to the computer only after Android has finished booting, and verify the functions you tested on the stock system. Check calls, SMS, Wi-Fi calling or LTE calling where relevant, mobile data, Wi-Fi, cameras, Bluetooth, charging and any work-critical application.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I remove Google accounts before unlocking?
A bootloader unlock performs a factory reset, and factory-reset protection can require the previously enrolled account during setup. Removing accounts when the device guide instructs you to do so helps avoid an activation lock after the reset; make sure you still retain the credentials needed for later use.
Can I use a recovery image from a phone with the same brand and screen size?
No. Recovery images are tied to the model’s codename, partition layout and firmware assumptions, not its appearance or brand. Use only the image linked from the exact device page, even when another phone looks identical.
Are the ADB and fastboot commands different on macOS and Linux?
The documented ADB and fastboot operations are generally the same, but installation paths, USB permissions and device access differ by operating system. Windows adds a manufacturer-driver check, while macOS and Linux may require resolving permissions or a competing USB process.
