Before updating an iPhone or iPad, make a backup, connect to power and Wi-Fi, then use Settings > General > Software Update. On a Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. The exact update offered depends on your device, so check its Software Update screen and Apple’s current security releases list rather than relying on a version number in an older guide.
Prepare your iPhone or iPad before updating
Apple recommends backing up your device before installing an update. Choose an iCloud backup or back up to a computer; this gives you a recovery point if you need your data later. Apple describes keeping software up to date as an important part of maintaining product security, but no update process can guarantee that data loss is impossible.

Before starting, connect the iPhone or iPad to power and a Wi-Fi network. Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections may prevent a device from reaching its update servers, so if an update will not appear or download, those connections may be relevant.
Install an iPhone or iPad update over Wi-Fi
- Open Settings > General > Software Update. The screen shows the installed software version and whether an update is available.
- If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi while the update downloads and installs. Allow the device to finish and restart as directed.
If the device says it needs more space
If prompted to temporarily remove apps to make room, you can accept; Apple says those apps are reinstalled automatically after the update finishes. If you prefer not to do that, cancel and remove content manually to free space, then check Software Update again.

Update an iPhone or iPad with a trusted computer
If wireless updating is unavailable, Apple documents updating through a trusted computer. Use Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later; on macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes. This is an alternative route, not a reason to connect the device to an unfamiliar computer.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to a trusted Mac.
- In Finder, select the device in the sidebar and open General.
- Choose Check for Update, then select Download and Update and follow the prompts.

Check for and install macOS updates
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the update shown for your Mac and follow the prompts to install it.
Under Automatic Updates, macOS provides controls to download available updates, install macOS updates, and install system data files and security updates. Apple recommends enabling automatic checks and downloads as well as system security data updates. For automatic downloads, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air need to be connected to their power adapter.

On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates to choose automatic behavior. Apple says automatic installation takes place overnight while the device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, with a notification beforehand. You can instead allow automatic downloads and install later yourself.

Automatic updating is convenient; manual installation lets you choose when to begin. Apple’s guidance does not establish that one approach is categorically safer. Whichever you choose, keep a backup before an iPhone or iPad update and review the update details shown on the device.
Check which update applies to your device
There is no single version number that applies to every iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Available updates vary by device and supported operating-system line, and Apple’s security releases page lists releases alongside the device groups they support. Check both that dated list and your device’s Software Update screen when deciding what to install.

Apple explains that newer operating systems may rely on architecture and system changes, so not all known security issues are addressed in older operating-system versions. This is a reason to keep supported software current, not a claim that every device can install the newest major release. Apple’s security releases page is the reference for current releases and compatibility.

- No update appears: Check the device’s own Software Update screen and Apple’s security releases list. A release may not support your particular device.
- The download cannot reach Apple’s servers: Confirm Wi-Fi access and consider whether a VPN or proxy is interfering, as Apple notes these connections may block contact with update servers.
- Wireless updating is unavailable: Use the trusted-computer route—Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier.
- There is not enough storage: Accept the temporary app removal prompt, or cancel and remove content manually before trying again.
If these steps do not resolve a device-specific problem, consult Apple Support for that model and software version.
