First identify the exact change and which services, environments, or user cohorts it reached; then stop further rollout. Choose the narrowest mitigation likely to restore service—a flag disable or configuration revert may be safer than rolling back an entire application package. Before acting, confirm the prior state is recoverable, use the approved incident procedure, and verify the same health signals that revealed the problem.
Rollback is a decision, not one universal command
A configuration change may be reversed by restoring an earlier configuration revision, disabling a feature flag, stopping a deployment that is still in progress, or redeploying an earlier application package. These actions affect different parts of a system. The right choice depends on where the fault is, what has already changed, the compatibility of dependencies and data, and the authority and runbooks for the service.

Google SRE recommends avoiding a global, all-at-once configuration push so a problem can be detected before every target is affected. A gradual rollout also gives responders a clearer boundary: which cohort changed, when it changed, and whether health worsened as exposure grew. See Google SRE’s configuration design guidance.
Choose the smallest safe recovery action
| Option | Good fit when | Check before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Disable a feature flag | A recently enabled feature is implicated and turning it off can isolate its behavior. | Confirm the flag’s scope and whether disabling it has side effects or leaves external dependencies in a changed state. |
| Revert configuration data | The faulty value or revision is identifiable and a known-good configuration remains compatible. | Check referenced resources, configuration dependencies, and platform-specific revert limits. |
| Stop an in-progress rollout | Exposure is still increasing and further rollout should halt. | Stopping may not restore targets already updated. Inspect actual state across targets. |
| Roll back the application package | The incident is tied to a release and the previous package is compatible with current data and migrations. | This can undo many unrelated changes, affect multiple teams, or constrain subsequent releases. |
| Patch forward | Rollback is unavailable or incompatible, or an approved urgent fix is safer. | This adds another change during an incident; apply incident review and testing controls. |
Prefer a targeted flag disable or configuration revert when it is likely to restore service without disturbing unrelated changes. GitLab advises checking whether a feature flag can mitigate an incident and warns that package rollback can remove multiple changes and affect other teams. Its deployment guidance is specific to GitLab workflows: GitLab Handbook: Deployments.

Google SRE notes that reverting the offending configuration can mitigate an outage faster than attempting an untested temporary patch. That advantage depends on being able to restore a known-good state; it is not a reason to skip compatibility checks. Configuration that refers to mutable external resources can be difficult to roll back, so design it to be sufficiently self-contained and record versions and dependencies.
Follow an incident sequence that protects the recovered state
- Stabilize and coordinate. Use the incident command process. Record the suspected change, affected environments or cohorts, and current health indicators. Pause or block other changes if incident policy calls for it.
- Trace the exact state transition. Find the configuration revision, feature-flag change, deployment, and relevant dependencies. A recent code release is not necessarily the cause if configuration changed separately.
- Select the narrowest viable mitigation. Decide whether a flag disable, configuration revert, rollout stop, package rollback, or carefully controlled forward fix best addresses the suspected cause. Compare the likely blast radius and compatibility risks.
- Check rollback preconditions. Verify that the prior version exists, the platform permits the operation, referenced dependencies have not changed, and the result will not leave data or consumers incompatible. Consult the service’s rollback procedure and authorization model.
- Execute through the approved path. Use the team’s controlled mechanism and required permissions. Avoid concurrent or stale deployment jobs that could overwrite the recovered state.
- Verify and communicate. Confirm which configuration or deployment version is active, check the same service health signals that triggered response, and establish whether user impact has stopped. Monitor for recurrence and tell incident stakeholders what changed and what risk remains.
- Preserve the incident record. Capture the change identifier, decision, operator, timestamps, observed metrics, result, and follow-up owner. Use the incident review to improve rollout boundaries, alarms, rollback procedures, or dependency isolation.
These are general decision principles, not a vendor-neutral command sequence. GitLab’s incident runbook emphasizes returning early to a previously known working state and lists disabling a feature flag and deployment rollback among possible actions. Follow the actual service runbook: GitLab Incident Runbook.

Check whether the previous state is truly recoverable
A previous revision is not automatically a safe destination. Check whether it still exists, whether the platform permits restoring it, and whether resources it references remain unchanged. A configuration that points to a mutable external resource may resolve differently now than it did before the incident. Likewise, an older application package may not work with current data or migrations.

- Confirm the change did not leave partial updates on only some targets.
- Read the service’s rollback procedure for approvals, permissions, and platform-specific constraints.
Know the platform-specific limits
Rollback behavior and timing are product-specific. For example, AWS AppConfig documents both CloudWatch alarm-triggered rollback during a deployment and a mechanism to revert a completed deployment. Its AllowRevert behavior applies only when the deployment succeeded within the previous 72 hours; after that window, AWS says a new deployment is required. This is an AWS AppConfig constraint, not a general rollback deadline. Consult the AWS AppConfig deployment and revert documentation for the applicable workflow.

Automation also needs guardrails. GitLab’s optional Auto Rollback feature selects the most recent successful deployment when a critical alert occurs. It is off by default, can skip rollback while a deployment is running, and can act only once in three minutes. Those behaviors describe GitLab’s feature, not a universal incident response policy; see GitLab environment documentation.
Prevent a stale deployment from undoing recovery
After mitigation, an older deployment job that finishes late can overwrite a newer state. GitLab documents this out-of-order deployment risk and recommends preventing outdated deployment jobs. Its documentation also says a rollback requires a new pipeline using a previous commit, rather than treating rollback as an in-place rewind. Check the active deployment state and ensure later jobs cannot reapply the bad version: GitLab Deployment Safety.

Make rollback easier before the next incident
Safe recovery is partly a design property. Stage configuration changes so exposure increases deliberately, make the active revision observable, and keep the prior state and its dependencies understandable. A rollback plan should identify the specific mechanism, preconditions, permissions, validation signals, and the person or role authorized to execute it. Where restoring an old state is unsafe, document the approved forward-fix path instead.
