To check for and install an update on a Galaxy S24, S24+, or S24 Ultra, open Settings > Software update > Download and install, then follow the prompts shown on your phone. The newest update available to you can depend on the exact model, software version, carrier, location, and rollout timing, so there is not one build number that applies to every S24.
Samsung may use slightly different wording on different phones. You might see Check for system updates, Check for software updates, Download now, or Install now instead. The function is the same: use the update screen for your specific phone, not a universal release date or build number.

Use the phone’s built-in update screen. The labels can vary by carrier, model, and installed software; if you see a different check, download, or install button, follow the on-screen instructions rather than looking for a label that may not appear on your device.
- Prepare the phone. Connect to Wi-Fi if you can and make sure the battery has sufficient charge. Samsung notes that some carriers require Wi-Fi to check for or install an update.
- Open Settings. You can start from the Settings app rather than a computer or a separate update utility.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install. If the next screen offers a different button, such as Check for system updates, Check for software updates, or Download now, tap it and follow the prompts.
- Read the prompt before accepting. The screen may identify the update, provide release information, or ask you to download before installing. Continue only when you can leave the phone unused for the installation.
- Complete the installation. Keep the phone available until it finishes and restarts if prompted. The installation may make the phone and its files inaccessible; calls, including emergency calls, cannot be made during the update process.
Choose a time when you can leave the phone alone and do not need to make calls. The update screen is the best way to determine whether an update is available for your particular device.

What should I check before starting?
A few practical checks can prevent an interrupted download or an inconvenient pause in phone access. They also help you distinguish a preparation problem from an update that simply has not reached your phone yet.
- Wi-Fi: Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection where possible. Some carrier update processes require Wi-Fi, and a weak connection can interrupt a large download.
- Battery: Start with sufficient charge, as Samsung’s UK guidance recommends. If the phone asks you to charge it, do so before continuing. Do not begin an installation when you know the phone may run out of power.
- Time: The phone cannot be used during installation, and calls are unavailable. Wait until you can tolerate that interruption, including the inability to place an emergency call.
- Storage: If the update reports that storage is insufficient, free the amount of space the phone requests, then try again. There is no single storage figure that applies to every package, so use the amount displayed by your phone.
- Connection and location: Availability is tied to the phone’s model, software, carrier, and location. Being on a different network or using a phone originally sold for another carrier can affect what appears.
A computer, paid utility, special cable, or separate accessory is not required for the ordinary Settings-based process. Smart Switch is an optional troubleshooting route if the on-device process continues to fail.
What do the update buttons mean?
Samsung’s update screens are not identical across every Galaxy S24. One device may open directly to Download and install; another may first show a check button. The wording can also change after a package has been found.
- Check for system updates or Check for software updates: Tells the phone to contact the update service and see whether a package is available for that exact device.
- Download now or Download and install: Starts downloading a package that has been offered to your phone. Keep Wi-Fi connected if possible.
- Install now: Begins the installation after the download is ready. Select it only when the phone can be unavailable.
If a button has a different name, use its position and the surrounding instructions as your guide. Samsung states that screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and model, so a different label is not by itself a sign that something is wrong.
What happens while the update installs?
The phone may restart as part of the process. During installation, the device cannot be used and files are inaccessible. Calls, including emergency calls, cannot be made until the process is complete. This is why starting immediately before travel, an important call, or another time-sensitive task is risky.
Leave the phone alone while it works through the displayed steps. Do not treat a temporarily unavailable screen as proof that the update failed. Wait for the phone to finish and return to its normal interface, then unlock it and check the software information if you want to confirm the result.

Depending on the phone’s model and software, the update menu may also show update history or release notes. If those entries are present, they can help you identify what was installed and what the package covered. Their location and availability are not identical on every device.
If the phone still shows the same software information after a completed installation, return to Settings > Software update and check the status again. Use the exact model and carrier details shown on the phone when comparing information with a carrier support page.
Why is the latest update not showing up?
An update missing from your screen does not necessarily mean that no update has been released for any Galaxy S24. Samsung says availability can vary by carrier, model, and software version, and a recently released update may arrive in waves.
Check the carrier and phone variant
Carriers develop and release updates, so a carrier-branded phone may receive an update on a different schedule from another S24 variant. What a “no update available” message does and does not tell you
The message means that no update is being offered to that phone through its current update channel at that moment. It does not establish that an update has never been released for the S24 family, that another variant has the same software, or that your phone has the newest software worldwide.

What if the update download or installation fails?
Start with the message on the phone, then use the matching recovery step. The cause can be as simple as an interrupted download or insufficient storage.
- Insufficient storage: Remove or move enough content to meet the amount of space the phone requests, then retry. The requested amount is the useful figure; there is no universal free-space requirement for every S24 update.
- Interrupted download: If the download stopped, resume it from the notification rather than starting with an unrelated tool. Reconnect to reliable Wi-Fi if necessary.
- Wi-Fi or carrier requirement: If the phone will not check or download, connect to Wi-Fi. Some carriers require it for the check or installation.
- No update offered: Recheck the carrier, model, software version, and staged-rollout factors above. A missing offer is not proof that another S24 variant has not received an update.
- Persistent failure: Samsung says Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac may prompt you to update when you connect the phone by USB. Treat it as an alternative to try if the on-device process keeps failing, not as a prerequisite for a normal update.
If Smart Switch does not offer an update either, that does not override the carrier and rollout rules. The software available to a particular phone can still depend on its variant, original carrier, location, and compatibility testing.
Should I update from Settings or use Smart Switch?

Smart Switch is a possible computer-based fallback when the phone’s update process is persistently unsuccessful; Samsung’s guidance says it may prompt an update, not that it will always do so.

There is no need to install a third-party “optimizer” or buy a special accessory for the normal update path. If you use a computer, use Smart Switch as Samsung’s stated fallback rather than assuming another utility can provide a carrier update.
Can I use automatic downloads or schedule the installation?
Samsung’s phone-update guidance includes an auto-download option, but the setting’s label and availability may vary by software version, carrier, and model.
