To make a MacBook Pro last longer on a charge without needlessly slowing it down, first find what is using energy, then try small adjustments: dim the display to a comfortable level, quit apps you do not need, and unplug idle accessories. Keep Energy Mode on Automatic for everyday use; switch to Low Power when you need to stretch a charge and can accept a task-dependent performance trade-off.
Find the cause of battery drain first
Check recent usage before changing several settings at once. On macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and review the usage history shown there. The available information and options can vary by Mac and macOS version.

For a closer look at apps, open Activity Monitor and select the Energy tab. The Energy Impact value is a relative indicator of an app’s energy use, not a direct estimate of how many minutes it will take off your charge. On Mac laptops, the 12 hr Power column shows an average over the last 12 hours or since startup, whichever period is shorter; it is a diagnostic measure, not a battery-life forecast.

Try the least disruptive changes
Set brightness for the room
Lower the display brightness until the screen remains comfortable to read in your environment. Dimming is a straightforward way to conserve energy, but there is no guaranteed runtime increase: the effect depends on your display, workload, and other conditions.
Close apps you are not using
Quit resource-heavy apps when they are no longer needed, especially if Activity Monitor shows sustained energy use. Keep apps open when you need them; routinely closing everything is not a substitute for identifying what is actually consuming energy.

Disconnect idle accessories
Unplug external devices and accessories that you are not using. If you rely on a peripheral for your work, leave it connected—the practical aim is to remove unnecessary power use, not to disrupt your setup.
Choose an Energy Mode for the work at hand
Apple describes Automatic as the default mode that balances energy use and performance. It is the sensible starting point for ordinary use: you do not need to keep the Mac in a restrictive mode just to pursue better battery life.

In macOS Ventura or later, look in Apple menu > System Settings > Battery for Energy Mode options. Apple says the controls are not available on every Mac. Older macOS versions use System Preferences and may present different labels. In macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, mode selection is also available in Control Center.

Use Low Power as a targeted choice rather than an automatic fix for every drain problem. If a particular task becomes too slow, return to Automatic. If you have a supported model and need sustained performance, High Power may be appropriate while plugged in or when its extra energy use is acceptable.

Check graphics and external displays on the right models
Automatic graphics switching applies to certain MacBook Pro models with both integrated and discrete graphics; it is not a universal setting for Apple silicon MacBook Pro computers. On applicable dual-graphics models, connecting an external display can keep the Mac using its high-performance discrete GPU, which may use more energy. If you are troubleshooting unexpectedly short battery life with a display attached, test the Mac without that display when practical and compare usage under similar work conditions.

Optimized Battery Charging is intended to help preserve battery longevity, not to make the current charge last longer. It adapts to your routine and may delay charging past 80% when the Mac expects to remain connected to power for an extended period. A charge that pauses below 100% in that situation can be expected behavior, rather than evidence that the battery is failing.

Battery settings and charging options vary by Mac and macOS. On supported systems, review them under Apple menu > System Settings > Battery; older versions may use System Preferences and different labels.
A practical order for improving battery life
- Review Battery settings usage history and Activity Monitor’s Energy tab to identify likely causes.
- Reduce brightness to a comfortable level and quit apps you do not need.
- Disconnect accessories that are idle, then check whether the change addresses the drain you noticed.
- Leave Energy Mode on Automatic for balanced everyday work. Try Low Power when extending runtime matters more than peak performance.
- If you use an external display with a dual-graphics MacBook Pro, check whether the display is keeping the discrete GPU active.
Make one change at a time and compare similar workloads; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which adjustment helped. Apple’s guidance does not promise a fixed number of extra hours or a percentage improvement from these steps.
