To improve audio quality and stop dropouts on the CMF Speaker S, keep your phone or computer close with a clear path to the speaker, reduce nearby 2.4 GHz wireless activity, and check that the speaker is connected to the device you intend to use. For the cleanest, lower-latency connection, use USB-C audio if your source supports it. If Bluetooth still cuts out, test a downloaded track, forget and re-pair the speaker, then reset it or update its firmware through Nothing X.
Why does my CMF Speaker S keep cutting out?
Most Bluetooth skips come from the connection between the source device and speaker, not from the music file itself. Distance, walls or metal in the path, radio congestion, and the speaker reconnecting to a different paired device can all disrupt playback. A stream can also stop because the phone or computer has lost its internet connection, even when its Bluetooth link to the speaker is fine.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Nothing lists Bluetooth 6.0 and a free-space range of over 100 metres for the CMF Speaker S. That range is not a reliable indoor expectation: walls, metal, your body and nearby radio activity can shorten the usable distance. For troubleshooting, start with the source only a few metres away and in clear view of the speaker. Once playback is stable, you can move the source gradually to find a placement that works in your room.
The speaker’s Bluetooth 6.0 specification does not make a room immune to interference or guarantee the full stated range. The practical link depends on the path between the two devices and the radio environment around them. A short, unobstructed test is therefore more useful than relying on a free-space distance figure.

Check which device is connected
The speaker can connect to two devices, but Nothing says it preferentially reconnects to the last-connected device when powered on if it has connection records for multiple devices. If a nearby laptop or tablet has taken the connection, audio from your phone may not reach the speaker as intended. This can look like a dropout, even though the speaker is connected to another source.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices that have been paired with the speaker.
- Reconnect the intended phone, tablet or computer and check whether playback stabilizes.
- If you regularly switch sources, disconnect from the current source before connecting the next one rather than leaving several nearby devices competing to reconnect.
Dual-device support is useful for convenience, such as keeping a phone and computer connected, but it is not the same as mixing two audio streams. For a clean troubleshooting test, use one source at a time. Afterward, you can restore the dual-device arrangement and see whether it behaves as expected in your setup.
Check distance, obstructions and interference
Move the source close to the speaker, ideally within a few metres, and keep the path between them unobstructed. A phone in a pocket or bag, a thick wall, or a metal surface can weaken the radio link. Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, cordless phones and dense Bluetooth activity can add interference, especially in the 2.4 GHz band.
Where your router supports it, move Wi-Fi devices that do not need 2.4 GHz onto 5 GHz. This reduces one potential source of congestion around the speaker; it does not change the speaker’s Bluetooth connection into a 5 GHz link. If the speaker is placed directly beside a router or a cluster of other wireless equipment, try moving it a short distance away and compare playback.
When testing, change one factor at a time: first distance, then obstructions, then nearby wireless equipment. If a particular change makes playback stable, you have a practical placement fix. If the problem persists in a close, clear path with other paired devices disconnected, continue to the local-audio and pairing checks rather than assuming the advertised range should work through walls.
How do I tell whether the problem is Bluetooth or streaming?
Play a track stored on your phone or computer instead of streaming one. If the local track plays smoothly but a streaming track skips, the Bluetooth link may be working and the interruption may instead come from the source device’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Testing a local file helps separate wireless audio transmission from internet delivery.

- Play it with the source close to the speaker and other paired devices temporarily disconnected.
- If local playback is stable, check the source device’s internet connection and streaming app before resetting the speaker.
- If local playback also stutters, continue with the Bluetooth pairing and reset steps below.
Keep the test conditions simple: use the same source, speaker placement and approximate volume while comparing local and streamed playback. If the local file is stable only when the source is close, there may still be a Bluetooth range or interference issue. If local audio remains smooth at the same distance but only streaming cuts out, focus on the network or streaming app first. That distinction can save time and avoid resetting a speaker when the interruption is upstream of Bluetooth.
How do I stop Bluetooth audio from stuttering?
Work through the low-risk checks first, then reset only if simpler fixes fail. This order helps distinguish a competing source or radio problem from a pairing issue, while avoiding an unnecessary reset. After each change, replay the same local track long enough to see whether the interruption returns.

1. Reconnect the intended source
Turn off Bluetooth on other nearby phones, tablets and computers that have been paired with the speaker. Reconnect the device you want to use and test playback. This is especially useful if the speaker reconnects to the last-used device when it powers on. If this fixes the issue, you can decide whether to keep other devices disconnected or manage the connection manually when switching sources.
2. Improve the radio path
Bring the source within a few metres, remove obstacles where practical, and avoid blocking the path with your body. Move the speaker away from a Wi-Fi router, microwave, cordless phone, metal surface or cluster of USB 3 devices. If you can, reduce other 2.4 GHz activity and put compatible Wi-Fi clients on 5 GHz.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTest without carrying the phone in a pocket or bag, because your body or the bag’s contents can sit between the source and speaker. If you normally listen across a room or through a wall, first verify reliable playback nearby; that establishes whether the speaker and source can maintain a stable link in a favorable position.
3. Forget and re-pair
- In the source device’s Bluetooth settings, remove or forget the CMF Speaker S.
- Restart Bluetooth on the source device, then start pairing again.
- If the speaker is no longer discoverable after its reconnection timeout, hold its Bluetooth button until the blue pairing LED flashes.
- Select the speaker in the source device’s Bluetooth list and test playback.
Use the flashing-blue light as a pairing cue, and check the source device’s Bluetooth list to confirm that you selected the CMF Speaker S. A solid-blue LED indicates a Bluetooth connection. If the speaker has reconnected to an unintended device, temporarily switch off Bluetooth on that device before retrying.
4. Factory-reset as a last resort
Only reset after checking the source, radio path and pairing. Hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button for at least 10 seconds. A successful reset is indicated by rapid blue flashes, followed by a restart and entry into pairing mode; pair the speaker again from the source device.
A reset is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a single skip. Try the reversible checks first, especially a local track test and a fresh pairing. After a reset, follow the normal pairing process again and check whether the speaker remains connected during the same playback test that failed previously.
5. Update firmware if the problem remains
If reconnection and reset do not resolve the issue, Nothing directs users to install the latest firmware through the Nothing X app and try again. Use the app’s available update instructions for your speaker rather than assuming a particular firmware version or update screen. Retest afterward with a local track and one connected source so the result is easier to judge.
Can I use USB-C for better audio?
Yes. Nothing specifies lossless playback and latency below 60 ms over USB-C audio, making it the clearest option in the published specifications when your phone or computer supports USB-C audio output. It also avoids Bluetooth radio interference between the source and speaker. That makes USB-C particularly useful when you want to compare playback without depending on the Bluetooth radio path.

USB-C is not automatically the right choice for every setup: it requires a compatible source and a physical connection, while Bluetooth is more convenient for moving around or switching devices. Nothing’s published Bluetooth codecs for normal playback are AAC and SBC; LC3 is listed for Auracast audio, not as a normal-playback codec. Nothing does not publish an independent comparison of Bluetooth codec performance or dropout rates for this speaker, so choose between USB-C and Bluetooth based on the stated capabilities and the needs of your setup.
| Connection or setup | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C audio | Nothing specifies lossless playback and latency below 60 ms. | Listening from a compatible source when audio quality or low latency matters more than cable-free use. |
| Bluetooth, one source | Wireless playback using AAC or SBC for normal playback. | Convenient everyday listening; keep the source close and the radio path clear. |
| Two connected devices | The speaker supports dual-device connections and preferentially reconnects to the last-connected device. | Switching between paired sources, provided you manage which device is connected for playback. |
| Stereo Mode with two speakers | Two CMF Speaker S units can be paired for a wider left/right presentation. | Listening where stereo separation matters more than using one speaker alone. |
These options solve different problems. USB-C removes the Bluetooth radio link and is the published choice for lossless playback and latency under 60 ms, but requires a cable and compatible output. Bluetooth is cable-free, but its AAC and SBC options still rely on a stable radio path. Dual-device connections add switching convenience, while Stereo Mode changes the presentation by using a second speaker; neither feature is a substitute for correcting a weak or interrupted connection.
How can I improve CMF Speaker S sound quality?
Choose the connection and setup that suit the room and content, then use the Nothing X app’s Custom EQ for adjustments. A stable Bluetooth link helps avoid interruptions, but it cannot compensate for the source’s streaming problems or make a congested radio environment disappear. For the most useful comparison, keep the source and track the same as you make one adjustment at a time.
Use a stable, unobstructed setup
For Bluetooth listening, keep the source close and avoid placing the speaker beside a router, microwave, cordless phone, metal surface or USB 3 device cluster. If the sound is cutting in and out, fix the connection before using EQ to change the tone; equalizer adjustments do not repair a weak or interrupted Bluetooth link.
Separate the speaker from likely sources of congestion and test with a clear path before settling on a permanent position. The published range of over 100 metres is specified for free space, not as an indoor guarantee. Walls, metal, body blocking and nearby radio activity all affect practical range, so a position that works in one room may not work equally well across several walls.
Adjust EQ to the material and room
Custom EQ in Nothing X lets you adjust bass, treble or voice. Make changes in small increments and listen to the same passage as you compare settings. If strong bass enhancement sounds distorted at high volume, reduce it; that is a listening adjustment, not evidence of a particular speaker fault.

EQ is a way to tailor the speaker’s tonal balance to your content and listening space, not a guaranteed way to make every recording sound better. If a change makes voices harder to hear or bass sound overpowering, undo it or try a subtler adjustment. When evaluating a setting, avoid changing the source, connection and EQ at the same time, because then it is difficult to tell which change affected what you hear.
Use Stereo Mode when you want left/right separation
Pair two CMF Speaker S units in Stereo Mode for a wider left/right presentation. The rear LED breathes white when Stereo Pair is active. This is a different goal from fixing dropouts: first establish stable playback, then decide whether a second speaker and stereo setup suit the room.

Stereo Mode requires two CMF Speaker S units, so it is a choice about presentation as well as setup. One speaker is the simpler option when you want a single-unit arrangement; a pair is relevant when left/right separation is a priority. It does not change the speaker’s stated Bluetooth codec support or remove interference affecting the source-to-speaker connection.
What do the CMF Speaker S lights mean?
The rear LED gives a quick indication of pairing, connection and multi-speaker status. Use it alongside the source device’s Bluetooth list when diagnosing a connection. The light can help distinguish pairing mode from an established Bluetooth connection, but it does not by itself identify whether a streaming interruption came from the internet or from the radio link.
| LED behavior | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Flashing blue | Pairing mode |
| Solid blue | Bluetooth connected |
| Breathing white | Stereo Pair active |
| Solid white | Multi-speaker or Auracast active |
| Rapid blue flashes followed by restart | Factory reset completed |
If you are trying to pair after the speaker’s reconnection timeout, look for flashing blue before selecting it in the source’s Bluetooth menu. If a reset completes, rapid blue flashes are followed by a restart and pairing mode. For ordinary Bluetooth use, solid blue indicates that a connection has been made; if sound still stutters, continue troubleshooting the source, path and interference rather than treating the LED as proof that streaming is stable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I expect from the speaker’s published specifications?
Nothing’s 2026 specifications list one 45 mm full-range driver, 10 W RMS output and a frequency response of 70 Hz–20 kHz for the CMF Speaker S. Those specifications describe the product, but they do not guarantee a particular loudness or sound in every room, nor do they measure Bluetooth stability. A driver size, power rating and response range should not be read as a promised listening result for every room or recording.
Nothing also claims up to 18 hours of playback under specified laboratory conditions: 50% volume, AAC, Ultra Bass on and controlled testing. Treat that as a qualified battery figure, not a guarantee for every listening session. Actual battery life varies with source, volume, wireless conditions, enabled features and battery age. If your use differs from those test conditions, do not assume it will match the maximum figure.
Likewise, the stated free-space range of over 100 metres is not a promise of that distance through indoor walls or in a congested radio environment. For a dependable everyday connection, proximity and a clear path matter more than the headline range. Nothing lists Bluetooth 6.0, AAC and SBC for normal playback, and LC3 for Auracast audio; codec support should be understood in that context rather than as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Does the CMF Speaker S support LDAC?
Nothing lists AAC and SBC for normal Bluetooth playback and LC3 for Auracast audio; LDAC is not among the codecs in its published specifications. If codec choice is important to your setup, check the source device’s Bluetooth settings as well as the speaker specifications.
Can two phones play audio through the CMF Speaker S at the same time?
The speaker supports connections to two devices, but Nothing’s guidance says it preferentially reconnects to the last-connected device. Dual-device connection should not be taken to mean that two audio streams mix together. For troubleshooting, disconnect the extra source and test one device at a time.

Why won’t my CMF Speaker S reconnect?
It may be reconnecting to the last-connected paired device instead of the one you want. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby paired devices, reconnect your intended source, and check its Bluetooth list. If needed, forget and re-pair the speaker; if it is no longer discoverable after its reconnection timeout, hold the Bluetooth button until the blue pairing LED flashes.
How do I reset CMF Speaker S Bluetooth?
As a last resort after simpler checks, hold the Bluetooth button for at least 10 seconds. Rapid blue flashes followed by a restart and pairing mode indicate that the factory reset completed. Pair the speaker again from your source device.
Will Bluetooth 6.0 prevent interference or guarantee the full range?
No Bluetooth version can remove obstacles or radio congestion in a particular room. The speaker’s stated range is a free-space figure, so indoor placement and nearby wireless activity still affect the practical connection. Keep the source close and unobstructed, and reduce nearby 2.4 GHz activity where possible.
Why does my CMF Speaker S sound distorted at high volume?
Try lowering the volume and reducing bass enhancement in Custom EQ, then compare the same audio passage. If distortion occurs only with a particular stream, test a local file to separate a source or streaming issue from speaker playback. Reducing EQ bass is a listening adjustment, not a confirmed diagnosis of a hardware fault.
Can I use USB-C for better audio?
Yes, if your phone or computer supports USB-C audio output. Nothing specifies lossless playback and latency below 60 ms over USB-C audio. It also avoids Bluetooth radio interference between the source and speaker, though it requires a physical connection.
Why does Bluetooth stutter when a downloaded track plays smoothly?
If a local track is stable but a streaming track skips under the same Bluetooth conditions, check the source device’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection and the streaming app. The audio may be interrupted before it reaches the Bluetooth link.

The Bottom Line
For fewer dropouts, start with the basics: use the intended source, keep it close with a clear path, and reduce nearby 2.4 GHz congestion. Compare a local track with streaming before re-pairing; then forget and reconnect, reset only if needed, and install available firmware through Nothing X if the problem remains. For sound quality or latency, use USB-C audio when your source supports it. Use Custom EQ for tonal preferences and Stereo Mode when two speakers and left/right separation suit your room.
