Apple Music is not a dependable native destination for FLAC files. The reliable workflow is to convert each FLAC to Apple Lossless (ALAC), then import the new ALAC files or their folder. ALAC preserves the original audio data when the conversion starts with the original FLAC, while Apple Music’s copy-versus-reference setting determines whether moving your source folder later will break playback.
Keep the original FLAC collection until conversion, import, artwork, tags, and track order all check out. The Apple Music subscription’s Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless switches are separate playback settings; they do not add native FLAC importing to your personal library.

Can Apple Music import FLAC files directly?
There is no dependable native FLAC import path for the Apple Music/Music library workflow. Convert the files first, preferably to ALAC, and import the converted files instead. Apple’s formal conversion documentation describes the available target encoders rather than providing a direct FLAC compatibility table, while an Apple Community specialist states: “FLAC isn’t a supported file type, hence the recommendation of a third party solution.”
If a FLAC file is rejected, fails to appear, or cannot be added by dragging it into the library, that behavior is consistent with the format not being a supported import type. Converting to ALAC, WAV, or AIFF before importing is the practical fix.

Which format should you convert FLAC to?
Use Apple Lossless (ALAC) when preserving the source data matters. It is the natural target for an Apple Music library because it is lossless without requiring you to keep FLAC as the playback file.
| Target | Audio result | When it makes sense | Checks before importing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALAC | Apple Lossless preserves the original audio data when converted from the original FLAC. | Best default for a lossless Apple Music library. | Check tags, artwork, disc numbers, compilation flags, and multi-disc order. |
| WAV | Uncompressed audio; it is a lossless fallback target. | Useful when ALAC conversion is unavailable or another application requires WAV. | Inspect metadata carefully because converter handling of tags can differ. |
| AIFF | Uncompressed audio; it is another importable fallback. | Useful when a workflow specifically expects AIFF. | Verify artwork, tags, and ordering after conversion. |
| AAC or MP3 | Lossy compression discards data. | Only when smaller files matter more than retaining the lossless source. | Do not expect a later conversion back to ALAC, WAV, or AIFF to restore discarded information. |
Apple says that conversion to certain compressed formats can lose data, and converting a compressed file to an uncompressed format does not improve quality. Therefore, always convert from the original FLAC rather than from an AAC or MP3 copy.
What should you do before converting a FLAC collection?
Protect the source collection and decide how the library should store its media before you start a large batch.
Keep the original FLAC files
Apple’s conversion process creates a new file and leaves the original unchanged. Work from copies or retain the original FLAC folder until the ALAC files have been imported and checked. Keeping the source also gives you a clean recovery path if tags, artwork, or disc order need to be corrected and converted again.
Plan for temporary storage
Conversion produces a second set of files, so the source FLACs and the new ALACs may coexist for a while. Make sure the destination disk has room for both collections plus any library-managed copies you choose to create.
Choose a converter deliberately
A conversion tool should be able to write ALAC, process an entire folder, preserve or edit tags and artwork, and handle multi-disc albums and cue sheets in a way you can verify. Maintenance status and operating-system support also matter. No converter should be assumed to preserve every tag exactly; inspect the results in Music after importing.

- Start a folder conversion: Hold the Option key and choose File > Convert > Convert to [import preference]. Select the folder containing the FLAC files. You can use the same command for selected files if you prefer a smaller batch.
- Wait for new files: Music writes new ALAC files and leaves the FLAC originals in place. Do not delete or reorganize the source folder during the conversion.
- Spot-check the output: Open several ALAC files in Finder or Music and confirm that the expected album, artist, track, and disc information is present before importing the complete collection.
The command label includes your chosen import preference, so it may appear as “Convert to Apple Lossless Encoder” rather than the generic wording shown above. If you selected the wrong encoder, change Import Settings before running another batch.
How do you convert FLAC to ALAC on Windows?
Apple documents the conversion controls through the Windows iTunes workflow. After conversion, use the Apple Music Windows app to import the resulting ALAC files or folder.
- Open import preferences: In iTunes for Windows, choose Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings.
- Choose Apple Lossless: Set the encoder to Apple Lossless Encoder and confirm.
- Convert the source: Hold Shift while choosing File > Convert > Convert to [import preference], then select the FLAC file or source folder presented by the dialog.
- Retain the originals: The conversion creates new files. Leave the FLAC folder untouched until the converted files have been imported and checked.
- Open Apple Music: In the Apple Music Windows app, use its import command for the ALAC output rather than trying to add the original FLAC files.
The conversion controls and the library-import controls are separate. A successful conversion does not automatically guarantee that the new files have been added to Apple Music, so complete the import step explicitly.

Import the ALAC file itself or the folder containing it. Do not select the original FLAC folder by mistake.
On a Mac
- In Music, choose File > Add To Library or File > Import.
- Select the converted ALAC file or its folder and confirm.
- As an alternative, drag the ALAC file or folder from Finder into the Music window.
- Search for the album and play several tracks to confirm that they open normally.
On Windows
- Open Apple Music and open Sidebar Actions > Import.
- Select the ALAC file or folder created by the conversion.
- Wait for the import to finish, then locate the album in the library.
- Play tracks from different discs or parts of the collection to catch ordering and path problems early.
Should Apple Music copy the files or reference them?
This choice determines what happens if you later move the converted files. A copied file is placed in the library’s managed media storage; a referenced file remains in its original folder and the library stores a pointer to it.
Apple’s Windows guide says that importing normally leaves the original in its current location while the library keeps a reference or pointer in the Apple Music folder. Moving that original can make the song unplayable. The Mac guide describes the same copy-versus-reference distinction.
Use managed copies when you want simpler maintenance
Choose the library’s copy behavior if you want Apple Music to own a stable media copy. After confirming that the copy exists and plays, you can reorganize the separate source folder without changing the path used by the library. Keep the original FLAC archive until you are satisfied with the result.

Use references when you intentionally manage the folders yourself
References can avoid another full copy, but the external path becomes part of the library’s configuration. Keep the drive mounted and the folder structure stable. Renaming a parent folder, moving the album, or disconnecting the storage can produce missing-file warnings.
How to recover a broken reference
If a song disappears after you move a folder, restore the original path first. If that is not practical, change the library’s copy behavior and re-import the ALAC files from their new location so Apple Music creates a valid managed entry.
How should you check tags and artwork after import?
Third-party converters may change metadata, and Apple does not promise that every tag will survive conversion unchanged. Review representative albums before processing or deleting the source collection.
- Album and artist: Confirm spelling and capitalization so searches and artist views group correctly.
- Track number: Check that tracks play in album order rather than alphabetical filename order.
- Disc number: For multi-disc releases, verify that disc 1 and disc 2 remain separated and ordered correctly.
- Genre: Correct inconsistent values if you rely on genre browsing.
- Artwork: Make sure the intended cover appears and is not missing or attached to only one track.
- Compilation status: Check compilation flags on soundtracks and various-artist albums so they do not scatter across individual artist pages.
If a converter produces a bad order or missing tags, correct the ALAC entries in Music or repeat the conversion from the original FLAC with different metadata settings. Do not use a lossy intermediate file as the replacement source.
Will converting FLAC to ALAC reduce audio quality?
Converting original FLAC files to ALAC does not reduce the stored audio data: both are lossless formats, and Apple Lossless is designed to preserve the original audio information. The important qualification is the source. If the FLAC was made from an already-lossy AAC or MP3 file, conversion cannot recreate information that was previously discarded.
Listen for a conversion mistake rather than assuming every audible change is caused by ALAC. Check that the selected encoder was Apple Lossless, compare the output with the original FLAC, and confirm that the source was not itself a lossy transcode. Apple specifically warns that converting a compressed file to an uncompressed format does not improve its quality.
Do not confuse file conversion with playback quality
ALAC preserves the file’s data, but the final sound also depends on the playback chain. Device output, digital-to-analog conversion, connection type, and playback settings can limit what you hear even when the file is lossless.

Are Apple Music subscription lossless settings the same as importing FLAC?
No. Subscription catalog quality settings control playback of Apple’s catalog, not the format accepted by your personal library. They do not make FLAC files natively importable and they do not convert files already on your computer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Apple Music catalog setting | Maximum listed quality | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/48 kHz | Playback quality for eligible subscription catalog tracks. |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Up to 24-bit/192 kHz | Higher-resolution playback for eligible catalog tracks and compatible equipment. |
Those figures describe Apple’s subscription catalog and playback settings, not a promise about every imported file. For listening above 48 kHz, Apple says some Macs and PCs may require an external digital-to-analog converter. Most Bluetooth connections are not lossless, so a wireless link can become the limiting factor after import.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do when FLAC import or playback fails?
The FLAC file is rejected or does not appear
Convert it to ALAC, WAV, or AIFF first, then import the converted output. Confirm that you selected the converted folder and that the conversion actually produced files rather than merely changing a filename extension.
The song disappears after folders are moved
The library probably stored a reference to the old path. Restore the original location, or enable copying into the managed media folder and re-import the ALAC file from its new location.
The audio sounds worse after conversion
Check the encoder selection and source history. The output should be Apple Lossless, and the input should be the original FLAC rather than an AAC or MP3 copy. Lost data cannot be recovered by converting that lossy copy to ALAC.

Tracks are in the wrong order
Inspect track and disc numbers, especially on multi-disc albums. Correct the metadata in Music or reconvert from the original files if the converter wrote incorrect values.
Artwork or compilation grouping is wrong
Review artwork and compilation flags on the imported album. Correct them in Music, then test the album view and artist view to make sure the changes produce the grouping you expect.

High-resolution playback is not bit-perfect
Treat this as a playback-chain issue, not an import failure. Check the device’s DAC, use a wired connection when appropriate, and review Apple Music lossless settings; Bluetooth commonly prevents lossless transmission.
What is the safest repeatable workflow for a large FLAC library?
A staged process limits the damage from a bad tag conversion or an accidental path change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Back up or preserve the FLAC folder. Do not make the only copy of your source the input to a destructive workflow.
- Convert a small test batch. Include a single-disc album, a multi-disc album, and a compilation with artwork.
- Inspect the ALAC output. Check audio playback, tags, artwork, disc numbers, and compilation behavior.
- Choose copy or reference behavior. Decide whether the library should manage stable copies or depend on your external folder paths.
- Convert the remaining folders. Keep the original FLAC collection unchanged while the batch runs.
- Import the ALAC folders. Use the Mac or Windows import path appropriate to your system.
- Audit the library. Search for missing albums, duplicate entries, incorrect order, and broken artwork before archiving or removing anything.
- Retire source files only after verification. If storage allows, retain the FLAC archive as your master lossless source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rename a .flac file to .m4a and import it?
No. Changing the extension changes only the name, not the encoded audio. The file must be decoded and written with an Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, or other genuinely supported encoder before import.
Do I need to convert every FLAC file before testing Apple Music?
No. Convert a small representative batch first, including a multi-disc album and a compilation. That test reveals metadata or ordering problems before you process the whole collection.
Can cue sheets be imported as one album automatically?
Cue-sheet handling depends on the converter and its settings, and Apple does not guarantee how a third-party tool will split or preserve cue-sheet metadata. Test one cue-based release and verify the resulting track boundaries and tags before batching more.
Why can a lossless file still sound different on Bluetooth?
Lossless storage and lossless transmission are separate stages. Apple notes that most Bluetooth connections are not lossless, so the wireless link may compress audio even when the imported ALAC file itself is unchanged.
