To identify a sperm-whale click, look for a train of very short, broadband impulses rather than trusting one loud transient. In a waveform, each click is a sharp spike; in a spectrogram, it is usually a nearly vertical mark spanning a broad frequency range. Measure the inter-click interval (ICI): about 0.2–2 seconds commonly indicates usual foraging clicks, intervals below 0.2 seconds indicate a buzz or creak, and gaps of roughly 2–8 seconds indicate slow clicks. Rhythmic, repeatable groups are codas used in social communication.
That timing pattern must be checked against bandwidth, pulse shape, recording geometry, background noise and behavioral context. There is no universal frequency or amplitude threshold: sex, direction of travel, depth, propagation and the hydrophone itself can change the spectrum. A defensible identification combines raw audio, waveform and spectrogram views, sequence timing, metadata and comparison with known sperm-whale recordings.

What does a sperm-whale click look like in a recording?
A sperm-whale click is an acoustic impulse lasting only a fraction of a millisecond to a few milliseconds. It is produced as part of a sequence, so the repeated pattern is normally more informative than an isolated pulse.
Waveform appearance
In a time-domain waveform, a click appears as a steep, short-lived excursion followed by a rapid return to the noise floor. Closely spaced clicks can merge visually when the display is zoomed out. At high source levels, the waveform may show multiple closely spaced lobes rather than one clean spike; that multipulse structure can result from the whale’s sound-production path and recording angle.

Spectrogram appearance
On a spectrogram, clicks usually appear as bright, narrow vertical marks because their energy is concentrated in a very short time window but spread across frequency. A sequence makes a picket-fence pattern. Off-axis reception, propagation loss or a recorder with limited bandwidth can make the marks look like narrow bands or remove portions of the apparent broadband signature, so a thin-looking mark is not automatically another species.
Why the train matters
Repeated intervals reveal whether the animal is searching, closing on prey or communicating. A lone transient can be a ship mechanism, cable knock, snapping shrimp, echo or another odontocete. Mark several successive onsets before assigning a species or behavior.
How should I preserve and inspect an underwater recording?
Start with the least-processed file and its metadata. Heavy denoising, compression or filtering can erase the very timing and frequency cues needed for identification.
1. Preserve the original and document the deployment
Keep an untouched copy of the recording. Create a companion note containing:
- Recording location, depth and date
- Sample rate and bit depth
- Hydrophone model, sensitivity and calibration information
- Recorder gain, analogue or digital filters and any resampling
- Sea state, wind, wave and vessel conditions
- Which channel or hydrophone captured each event
Without those details, an apparent absence of high frequencies may reflect the instrument rather than the whale.
2. View waveform and spectrogram together
Use a spectrogram window short enough to resolve millisecond-scale pulses, then switch to a longer time view to reveal the full train. Keep the waveform visible when measuring onsets; a spectrogram alone can hide clipping, ringing or overlapping sounds. NOAA’s passive-acoustic workflow similarly combines hydrophones, species-oriented detectors and human inspection of spectrograms when wind, waves and ship noise are present.

For each apparent click, record the start time to a consistent precision. Avoid marking the end of a reverberation tail as a new click. If the recording has multiple channels, note which channels detect the event and whether the arrival time shifts between sensors.
How do I classify a click train by inter-click interval?
Inter-click interval (ICI) is the elapsed time between successive click onsets. It is the most useful first classifier, but boundaries overlap and should be treated as working ranges rather than absolute species rules.

| Sequence type | Typical ICI or rate | Usual interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Usual clicks | About 0.2–2.0 seconds; field reports also describe 0.5–2.0 seconds during descent | Regular echolocation and prey search during a dive |
| Buzz or creak | Below 0.2 seconds, with the rate often accelerating | Close-range prey capture; shorter pulses and reduced sonar range |
| Slow clicks | Roughly 2–8 seconds (some studies use 3–8 seconds) | Low repetition rate; communication is a plausible interpretation |
| Codas | A patterned, rhythmic group rather than one fixed interval | Social communication |
Usual foraging clicks
During a dive, a whale may produce a long train with intervals commonly around 0.2–2 seconds. A stable train in that range supports the interpretation of echolocation or prey search, especially when it continues through a descent or approach. The interval can change as the whale’s behavior changes, so measure a section rather than one pair of clicks.
Buzzes and creaks
When a whale closes on prey, clicks can accelerate below 0.2 seconds. The pulses become shorter and the rapid sequence has less effective sonar range. A falling ICI across a train is stronger evidence for a prey-capture buzz than a simply fast, stationary rhythm.
Slow clicks
Gaps of roughly 2–8 seconds are commonly called slow clicks; some classifications use 3–8 seconds. Their lower repetition rate and low-frequency emphasis can be compatible with communication, but timing alone does not prove a social context.
Codas
Codas are stereotyped rhythmic groups. Their identity lies in the repeatable pattern of several clicks—such as the arrangement of short and long gaps—rather than in the spectrum of any one pulse. Compare multiple groups from the same encounter before calling a sequence a coda.
Squeals and specialist labels
Some reviews describe squeals as extremely rapid sequences reaching hundreds to more than a thousand clicks per second in particular classifications. Because terminology and thresholds vary, treat “squeal” as a specialist label and report the measured rate and source taxonomy instead of using the word alone.
What frequency are sperm-whale clicks?
There is no single frequency cutoff that identifies every sperm-whale click. Published measurements extend from low frequencies into at least 12–30 kHz, with many references showing strong energy in the low-kilohertz to approximately 15 kHz region.

| Measurement | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Male spectra | Stable peaks near 400 Hz and 2 kHz; energy to at least 12 kHz | Goold and Jones, 1995 |
| Female spectra | Peaks near 1.2 and 3 kHz; energy to at least 15 kHz | Goold and Jones, 1995 |
| Usual clicks in one field study | 10 Hz–30 kHz band; ICI 0.5–2.0 seconds during descent | Scientific Reports study, 2017 |
| Review description | 100 Hz–30 kHz bandwidth, peak energy around 15 kHz, duration 0.2–3 ms | Acoustics Australia review, 2017 |
| On-axis measurements | About 100 microseconds duration; centroid near 15 kHz; source levels up to 236 dB re 1 μPa rms at 1 m | Møhl and colleagues, 2003 |
The values describe different animals, orientations and measurement conditions. Male and female spectra can have different low-frequency peaks. An on-axis click can look much broader and stronger than the same click arriving from the side.
Why a real click can look narrow-band
- Directionality: Sperm-whale clicks are directional. An off-axis hydrophone may miss part of the spectrum or show multipulse structure.
- Propagation: Absorption and spreading selectively reduce components with distance. In one sea-state-3 report, off-axis low-frequency components were detectable to 15 km, but that is not a universal detection range.
- Recorder response: Hydrophone sensitivity, analogue filters, sample rate and gain limit what can be displayed.
- Clipping and noise: An overloaded input can flatten peaks, while masking noise can hide weak high-frequency components.
Use frequency as one axis of evidence. Do not reject a candidate solely because its visible energy does not reach 30 kHz.

How can I tell a sperm-whale click from ship noise or another transient?
Compare timing, pulse shape, bandwidth, sequence regularity, context and sensor behavior together. Many marine transients resemble clicks when viewed at one zoom level.
Ship machinery
Machinery usually produces tonal lines, harmonics or slowly varying broadband rumble that persists over longer periods. A single sharp impulse can occur when a vessel operates equipment or a propeller interacts with turbulence, so look for repeated, whale-like ICIs and a coherent train. Check the deployment log and spectrogram for stable engine tones before labeling an impulse biological.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Snapping shrimp and impulsive biological noise
Snapping-shrimp snaps can be short and broadband, but dense snap beds often create a continuous crackle or spatially diffuse background rather than a clean sequence with measured 0.2–2-second spacing. Use several events and, if available, channel arrival differences rather than one bright mark.
Echoes and reverberation
An echo is a delayed copy of an earlier click. The delay should track the original event and may appear as a weaker, repeated mark. Do not count a stable echo tail as a second whale click when calculating ICI.
Cable, handling and platform noise
Knocks from a mooring, cable strum or recorder movement often coincide with mechanical disturbances, have inconsistent spectral shapes and may appear on every channel at once. Inspect the raw waveform for ringing and check whether the event aligns with deployment or handling notes.
Clicks from other odontocetes
Other toothed whales also produce impulsive broadband sounds. Species-level confidence requires the sperm-whale timing and sequence pattern plus suitable bandwidth and context; brightness alone is not diagnostic.
How do I separate a feeding buzz from a social coda?
Plot the interval between every consecutive click and inspect whether the sequence accelerates or repeats a rhythm. A feeding buzz is a rate trajectory; a coda is a patterned group.
Signs of a feeding buzz
- ICI falls below 0.2 seconds, often becoming progressively shorter.
- The train is associated with a dive or an apparent prey-capture phase.
- Pulses are shorter and the rapid sequence is consistent with close-range echolocation.
Signs of a coda
- Several clicks form a stereotyped, repeatable rhythm.
- The pattern can recur as a unit, with timing relationships more stable than the spectrum of individual clicks.
- There is no requirement for a monotonic acceleration toward the end of the group.
Do not force every rapid train into one category. Measure the sequence, preserve the uncertainty and state whether the classification is behavioral, acoustic or both.

What equipment and settings are needed?
A hydrophone or underwater recorder is the direct way to capture these sounds. For basic identification, prioritize a known sample rate, documented sensitivity, waterproofing, a compatible connector and calibration information over a nominally impressive frequency specification.
For a single recorder
- Use a hydrophone whose response covers the frequencies you need to observe.
- Record at a sample rate high enough for the intended upper-frequency analysis; the usable band is limited by the recorder and any anti-alias filter.
- Set gain to avoid clipping while retaining weak distant clicks.
- Keep the original unfiltered data and log every filter or resampling operation.
For localization and direction
A calibrated multi-channel hydrophone array can add bearing and arrival-time information. If two or more sensors detect a click, compare relative arrival times and levels, while accounting for sensor spacing, clock alignment and directionality. An array does not remove the need to inspect the pulse train, but it can distinguish a local biological source from a platform-wide mechanical impulse.

Use spectrogram or passive-acoustic-monitoring software that can display raw waveform and time-frequency data, place precise time markers and export measurements. Automated detectors are useful for generating a candidate list; they should not be treated as final species identifications because environmental transients can mimic clicks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I compare a candidate with reference sperm-whale audio?
Use known sperm-whale recordings, including NOAA Fisheries examples for Physeter macrocephalus, as visual and acoustic references. Compare several dimensions at once:
- Pulse duration: Does the candidate have a short impulse or a longer mechanical event?
- Train spacing: Do successive onsets fall in a usual-click, buzz, slow-click or coda pattern?
- Time-frequency shape: Is energy broad, and does any multipulse structure recur?
- Sequence context: Does the pattern continue as a dive train or repeat as a rhythmic group?
- Recording conditions: Were the reference and candidate captured with comparable bandwidth, orientation and noise?
Match pulse spacing and train structure before comparing visual brightness. Amplitude on a spectrogram is not directly comparable when gain, distance or calibration differs.
What should a defensible identification report contain?
Report the observation in a way another analyst can reproduce. A useful entry includes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- File name and UTC time range
- Hydrophone channel or array position
- Sample rate, gain, filters and calibration status
- Number of marked clicks and the ICI range or median
- Observed pulse duration, bandwidth and any multipulse structure
- Background conditions, vessel activity and possible echoes
- Reference recordings used for comparison
- A confidence label and the reason for it
Use “likely sperm-whale click” when timing and shape support the identification but bandwidth, metadata or context are incomplete. Reserve a species-level certainty statement for recordings with adequate bandwidth, reliable metadata, reference comparison and, where possible, array bearings or visual or tag confirmation.
What are the most common identification mistakes?
Using one frequency threshold
Sex, angle, depth, propagation and instrument response shift the observed spectrum. A click that does not show a strong 15-kHz peak can still be consistent with a sperm whale, while a broadband impulse with that peak is not automatically one.

Counting echoes as new clicks
Echoes follow an earlier event at a delay and often have a weaker, altered spectrum. Mark the first arrival and inspect the surrounding waveform before computing ICI.
Classifying from a processed export
Noise reduction, automatic gain and lossy compression can create ringing, suppress weak components or alter relative levels. Return to the raw file whenever a classification depends on pulse duration or bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfusing a fast rhythm with a buzz
A coda can contain short gaps without the accelerating rate expected in a prey-capture buzz. Plot the entire sequence and report the rate trajectory.
Overstating detector output
A detector’s label is a candidate, not proof. Review the waveform, spectrogram, metadata and confounds manually, especially in noisy coastal or vessel-heavy recordings.
What is the practical decision sequence?
Use this compact order when reviewing a new file:
- Open the raw recording and verify sample rate, channel, gain and filter metadata.
- Find sharp transient candidates in the waveform and confirm their time-frequency appearance.
- Mark multiple consecutive onsets and calculate each ICI.
- Classify the sequence provisionally as usual clicks, buzz or creak, slow clicks, coda or another pattern.
- Check bandwidth, pulse duration and multipulse structure while accounting for directionality and recorder limits.
- Search for ship, shrimp, echo, cable, handling and other odontocete alternatives.
- Compare the train with known sperm-whale examples and note differences in recording geometry.
- Assign a confidence level and preserve the evidence supporting it.
This sequence keeps the strongest discriminator—repeated timing—at the center while preventing a narrow spectrum or loud transient from becoming an unsupported species call.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far away can a sperm-whale click be detected?
Detection range depends on direction, frequency, sea state, depth and recorder sensitivity. One field report found off-axis low-frequency components detectable to 15 km in sea state 3; that observation should not be treated as a universal maximum range.
Can an automated detector identify a sperm whale by itself?
No. Automated output is best treated as a candidate list because ship, platform and other biological transients can resemble clicks. Human review of waveform, spectrogram, ICI, metadata and reference recordings is still needed for a species-level claim.
What can an echo tell me about a sperm whale’s surroundings?
An echo is a delayed return from an object, and a longer delay indicates a farther object, as NOAA Fisheries explains. Separate the return from the original click before measuring the train’s ICI.
Why do two hydrophones show different click spectra?
Sperm-whale clicks are directional, so sensors at different angles can receive different frequency balances and multipulse shapes. Distance, propagation loss, calibration and each hydrophone’s frequency response add further differences; compare timing and arrival patterns as well as spectral appearance.
