When ChatGPT Work or Codex reaches a weekly usage limit, do not abandon the task or keep retrying blindly. First check Settings → Usage (or run /status in Codex CLI) to confirm the allowance and reset time. Let an already-running Codex turn finish if it continues, then save a compact handoff containing the goal, current state, completed steps, decisions, open items, files or links, and the next action. Keep that note in the same Work or Codex context, and choose between waiting, an account-offered credit or reset, upgrading, or a paid instant reset based on the options your account actually shows.
What should I do when my AI agent hits a weekly usage limit?
Use this order: verify the limit, protect the active work, write a handoff, preserve it in the right context, and only then choose a way to continue. Limits are not universal across AI products; the documented behavior here applies to ChatGPT Work and Codex, whose allowance can be shared and whose available work depends on your plan, model, task, and settings.

Open Settings → Usage to see remaining allowance and reset times. In Codex CLI, run
/statusfor usage information. - Do not interrupt an active turn without a reason. A Codex turn that is already running may complete after the limit is reached, subject to fair-use limits.
- Capture state before switching tasks. Record what you asked for, what happened, what is finished, the decisions already made, unresolved questions, relevant files or links, and the next concrete action.
- Save the note where the next turn can use it. Work conversations sync across web, mobile, and desktop. Codex has a separate view and history, and can work with local folders, repositories, terminals, and developer tools.
- Compare the account options. Depending on your plan, you may be able to wait for the reset, add credits, use a reset, upgrade, or buy an instant reset. The Usage screen or limit banner is authoritative for your account.
How do I check which usage limit I reached?
The usage page is the account-specific source for your remaining allowance and reset time. It can show more than one window, such as a five-hour window and a weekly window, so identify the window named in the warning instead of assuming every block is a weekly cap.
Check ChatGPT Work
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Choose Usage.
- Read the remaining allowance, the window that is depleted, and the displayed reset time.
The official explanation of shared allowances, windows, and usage checks is in Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex. A plan can expose both short and weekly windows, and the amount of work available changes with the selected model, the task, and account settings.

Check Codex CLI
Run:
/status
Use the result to confirm whether the block is a usage allowance, a reset timer, or another account condition. If the command and the web page appear different, rely on the current limit banner and Usage page for the action available to your account; do not infer a universal number from another user’s screen.
Can an active Codex turn continue after the limit appears?
Sometimes. An active Codex turn may finish after the limit is reached, within fair-use limits; the restriction generally affects additional work after that turn rather than guaranteeing an immediate stop. Let the turn produce its final response, then save the resulting state before attempting another request.
Recommended Free Tools
The guidance in Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan explains this active-turn behavior and the account-specific choices shown afterward. Treat a continuing turn as an opportunity to collect output, not as proof that unlimited follow-up requests remain available.
If the turn is still running
- Allow it to finish unless it is clearly stuck or performing an unsafe action.
- Copy important output, changed-file names, commands, and error messages as soon as the response is available.
- Ask for a concise state summary only if the turn still has room to answer; otherwise create the summary yourself from the transcript and tool results.
If the turn has ended
Stop sending retries. Open Usage, note the reset time, and write the handoff while the conversation and local workspace are still available. Repeated attempts do not create a new allowance and can make it harder to tell which request actually completed.
What should an AI-agent handoff note contain?
A useful handoff is short enough to scan but specific enough that a later turn can act without reconstructing the entire conversation. The following format is practical guidance based on how Work history and Codex context persist; it is not a mandatory product form.
Goal: …
Current state: …
Completed: …
Constraints/decisions: …
Open items: …
Relevant files/links: …
Next action: …
Goal
State the outcome in one sentence, including the user or project context. “Prepare the deployment checklist for the staging repository” is more actionable than “continue the task.”
Current state
Describe what the agent was doing when access ended. Include the branch, document section, command, test, or external page that was last touched. If a process is incomplete, say exactly which stage is in progress.

Completed
- List finished edits, generated files, validated commands, and decisions.
- Separate verified results from suggestions or assumptions.
- Include relevant error text verbatim when the next turn will need it.
Constraints and decisions
Record requirements that must not be changed: supported platforms, output format, security boundaries, naming rules, deadlines, or a decision to keep or reject a proposed approach. This prevents a later turn from “fixing” a choice that was intentional.
Open items
List unresolved questions and dependencies. Mark whether each item needs user input, another tool run, access to a file, or simply more reasoning.
Relevant files and links
Give repository paths, document names, issue identifiers, and source URLs. For local work, include the folder or branch rather than assuming the next turn will open the same location automatically.
Next action
End with one immediately executable instruction, such as “Run the failing test in tests/auth, inspect the first stack trace, and update the login error handling.” A single next action reduces the chance of a later turn restarting from the beginning.
Where should I save the handoff so the agent can resume?
Keep the note in the same product context whenever possible. Cloud Work chats sync across web, mobile, and desktop, while Codex is a separate view with its own history and can interact with local development environments.
For ChatGPT Work
Put the handoff in the existing Work conversation, preferably as the final message after the completed response. If your team uses a shared document or ticket, link it from that message as a second copy, but keep the authoritative state in the conversation that contains the decisions.

For Codex
Leave the note in the Codex conversation and, when the task changes files, save a matching text file in the repository or project folder. Include the exact path in the conversation. A later Codex turn may have access to the local folder, repository, terminal, and developer tools, but a separate Work chat will not automatically share Codex’s history.

What can I do after the current turn ends?
The available paths differ by plan and account. Compare them by speed, eligibility, whether they consume credits or a reset, and whether they alter the next weekly reset.
| Option | When it helps | What to verify | Timing effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wait for the displayed reset | The work can pause without a deadline. | The exact window and reset time in Settings → Usage. | No purchase; work resumes when the allowance resets. |
| Add credits | Your account presents credits as a way to continue. | Credit cost, eligibility, and which requests consume them. | Usually an account option; the page determines the effect. |
| Use an available reset | You have a reset offer or a banked reset. | Whether it is available now and its expiration. | Depends on the reset type and account terms. |
| Upgrade | Your plan offers a higher allowance suitable for the workload. | New plan limits, billing timing, and whether the change is immediate. | Plan-specific; confirm before committing. |
| Buy a paid instant reset | You need access immediately and your eligible account shows the offer. | Price, eligibility, and schedule impact in the account UI. | Starts a new weekly period with the first Work or Codex request after the reset. |
The general post-limit choices are described in Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan. There is no universal price comparison: the choices and amounts are account-specific.
How does a paid instant reset affect my weekly schedule?
An eligible Plus or Pro personal account may be offered a paid instant reset. It applies immediately, pulls the normal weekly allowance forward, and starts the next weekly period with the first Work or Codex request made after the reset.
That schedule change matters if you are near a natural reset. For example, buying access now can make the next weekly period begin with your next request rather than at the original calendar time. Read the price and schedule details shown in your account before confirming; availability and terms can change by account.

See Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets for the documented behavior. Do not treat a paid reset as extra allowance that leaves the original weekly period untouched.
What is a banked reset, and how do I redeem it?
A banked reset is a separate, one-time benefit, not the same thing as a paid instant reset. If your account has one, check its expiration and redemption instructions before spending it.
- Open Settings → Usage, or inspect the reset information in Codex CLI.
- Look for a banked-reset offer and its expiration date.
- Confirm that the reset applies to the Work or Codex allowance you need.
- Redeem it only after saving the handoff, because the reset changes when you can send the next request but does not reconstruct missing task state.
Offers and eligibility vary. The documented redemption behavior is covered in How resets work in Codex.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I resume the task safely after the limit resets?
Resume from the handoff, not from memory. A controlled restart prevents duplicate edits, contradictory decisions, and accidental loss of work.
- Open the original context. Return to the Work conversation or Codex thread that contains the note.
- Recheck the environment. In Codex, confirm the current folder, repository branch, uncommitted changes, and any process that may have stopped.
- Paste or point to the handoff. If you had to start a new thread, include the complete note and the relevant file or document paths.
- Ask for a state confirmation. Have the agent restate what it believes is complete and what it will do next before making edits.
- Run the single next action. Continue with the command, edit, or decision named in the note.
- Update the note after a milestone. Replace stale “current state” and “open items” entries so another pause will be safe.
When the reset occurs during a code change
Inspect the working tree before asking for more edits. Capture the names of modified files and any test output, then tell the agent whether to keep, revert, or review those changes. Never assume an interrupted tool call either completed or rolled back without checking.
When the reset occurs during document work
Record the last completed heading, unresolved claims, source links, and style decisions. If the output is being edited in a separate application, save that file and include its path or revision identifier in the handoff.

What problems commonly make a handoff fail?
Most failed continuations are caused by missing state or a wrong assumption about which context and allowance are active, not by the weekly timer itself.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- “I started a new chat and the agent forgot everything.” A new thread does not contain the old transcript. Paste the handoff and link the files explicitly.
- “The reset time passed, but requests still fail.” Reopen Usage and check which window is exhausted; a five-hour window and a weekly window can have different timers.
- “The agent repeated completed work.” Your note lacked a completed list or a precise next action. Add file paths, commands, and the last verified result.
- “I bought a reset but the schedule moved.” A paid instant reset can start the next weekly period with the first request after redemption. Review the schedule before purchasing.
- “The banked reset disappeared.” Banked resets can expire and are offer-specific. Check Usage or Codex CLI for the expiration and redemption status.
- “The output changed after resuming.” Restate constraints and prior decisions; otherwise the next turn may choose a different model, approach, or formatting rule.
How can I reduce disruption before the next limit?
Prepare a handoff at natural milestones instead of waiting for a banner. After each major edit, test run, or decision, update the current state and next action in the same Work or Codex context.
- Break long requests into checkpoints with a visible definition of done.
- Ask for a compact progress summary before a tool-heavy phase if the task is approaching a window boundary.
- Keep source links, commands, and file paths in the conversation rather than relying on an unrecorded mental context.
- Check Usage before starting a large batch so you can choose a smaller model, narrower task, or scheduled pause when appropriate. Availability still depends on plan, model, task, and settings.
- When collaborating, make the handoff understandable to a teammate who has not read the full transcript.
These practices do not increase an allowance. They make the work recoverable when the allowance ends and help you decide whether waiting or an account-offered reset is worth the interruption.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will opening a different chat bypass a weekly usage limit?
No allowance bypass is guaranteed by changing threads. The allowance is tied to the account and the applicable Work or Codex window, so a new chat should be treated as a new context for the same usage status.
Can I switch devices while waiting for the reset?
Work conversations sync across web, mobile, and desktop, so you can read and update the handoff from another supported device. Codex history remains in its separate view, and local files or repository state still need to be available in the environment where you resume.
Should I spend a paid reset if the timer is nearly over?
Compare the immediate deadline with the schedule change shown in your account. A paid reset can start the next weekly period with the first request after reset, so waiting may preserve a more convenient timing even when the purchase is available.
Where can I find the expiration date for a banked reset?
Check Settings → Usage or the reset information exposed by Codex CLI. Banked-reset offers and expiration dates are account-specific, so do not rely on a general date published elsewhere.
