The result is a PNG, JPEG or WebP image of the page’s full scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport. What do you need before an AI agent can capture a full page?
Install Node.js 20 or a newer release, choose an MCP client that can launch local servers, and ensure the client is allowed to write an image artifact to its workspace. The Playwright MCP package is started with npx, so you do not need to build a separate browser-control service.
- Node.js: version 20 or newer.
- MCP client: a client that accepts a server command and arguments, then exposes the server’s tools to your agent.
- Network access: the browser process must be able to reach the target URL and any resources required for the page.
- Workspace permissions: required only when you ask for a filename or otherwise persist the image.
Use a disposable browser profile for untrusted sites and keep credentials out of prompts and source-controlled configuration. A screenshot can contain personal data, tokens rendered in the page, or information hidden below the fold.

How do you add Playwright MCP to an MCP client?
Add a server entry that runs the package through npx. The standard configuration is:

Why use the package tag shown above?
@playwright/mcp@latest follows the getting-started configuration. It lets npx resolve the current published package when the server starts. For a locked build, pin a tested package version in your own configuration instead of changing the interaction sequence.
How does the agent capture a full-page screenshot?
The reliable sequence is navigation, optional inspection, then a screenshot call. Give the agent a clear target URL and tell it whether the image should be returned inline or saved as an artifact.
- Start the MCP server. Confirm that the client lists the Playwright tools after loading the configuration.
- Navigate. Ask the agent to open the complete URL, including the scheme and any required path or query string.
- Inspect when interaction is needed. Call
browser_snapshotto obtain the page’s structured accessibility representation and refs for controls. Use those refs to dismiss a dialog, expand content or trigger a state change. - Capture the document. Call

}If you omit filename, the tool can return the image inline. If you include it, the image is written to the client’s workspace or output location. Keep the filename unique in parallel jobs so one capture cannot overwrite another.
What exactly does fullPage: true capture?
It captures the page’s full scrollable document instead of only the current viewport. It is the right option for long landing pages, documentation, receipts and visual regression artifacts where content below the fold matters.
Full page versus an element
Full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target. If you need one component, take a separate element screenshot without fullPage; if you need the entire document, remove the element target and keep fullPage: true.
Full page versus viewport
A viewport screenshot records only what is visible at the current scroll position. It is smaller and useful for a single state, while a full-page image may be very tall and can expose content that a user would reach only by scrolling. Decide which representation your reviewer or downstream model actually needs before capturing.

Should an agent use a screenshot or an accessibility snapshot?
Use both, for different jobs. Playwright MCP is built around structured accessibility snapshots so an agent can understand page structure and interact with controls; screenshots are visual evidence, not an interaction interface.

Do not ask the agent to click coordinates inferred from a screenshot when a snapshot ref is available. The screenshot reference explicitly frames screenshots as “for looking at, not for acting on”; use browser_snapshot for refs to interact with the page.
Which screenshot output settings should you choose?
The screenshot tool supports PNG, JPEG and WebP. It also supports a scale setting: css is the default and emits CSS-pixel dimensions, while device uses the browser’s device-pixel ratio for a higher-resolution image.
Format
- PNG: a practical default for text-heavy pages, UI review and lossless archival.
- JPEG: useful when a smaller file is more important than lossless edges.
- WebP: useful when your viewer and pipeline accept it and you want a modern compressed format.
Set type to png, jpeg or webp in the tool arguments. Choose one format consistently in visual-diff pipelines so format changes do not appear as page changes.
Scale
Leave scale at css for predictable CSS-pixel dimensions. Choose device when a higher-resolution artifact is needed and your storage and review tools can handle the larger file. Record the scale alongside the image metadata so later comparisons use the same setting.

Use a path relative to the workspace, such as artifacts/docs-home.webp, and include a page or build identifier in automated runs. If the client returns an inline image, pass it directly to the next visual-review step; do not assume that an inline response is automatically retained after the session ends.
How can you configure optional Playwright MCP capabilities?
Screenshot capture is part of the core Playwright MCP tool set. Optional capability groups can be enabled with a command such as:

How do you make full-page captures reliable on dynamic sites?
Dynamic pages can change while the browser is loading or while the agent is interacting. Make the state explicit before the screenshot and preserve the sequence in your prompt or job definition.
Wait for the intended state
- Navigate to the final URL rather than a redirecting short link.
- Use a snapshot to verify that the expected heading, dialog or content is present.
- If a consent dialog or sign-in gate changes the page, handle it before taking the screenshot.
- Capture only after the agent has finished expanding or dismissing controls that affect the visual state.
Control repeatability
Use the same URL, browser configuration, viewport and screenshot scale for every run. Save the tool arguments with the image so a later reviewer can tell whether a difference came from the page or from capture settings. For pages with rotating content, record the capture time and treat visual differences as time-dependent unless the site offers a stable test mode.
Very long documents
A full-page image can become extremely tall. If a reviewer cannot inspect one enormous file, keep the full-page artifact for completeness and create additional viewport captures for focused review. Do not replace the full-page artifact with an element screenshot when the requirement is to prove that the entire document was captured.
Can the browser run remotely instead of on the developer machine?
Yes. A local setup runs the browser on the developer or agent machine through a local command and stdio-style MCP connection. A managed alternative is Azure Playwright Workspaces, which Microsoft documents as a preview remote MCP server using Streamable HTTP. Preview availability and behavior can change, so treat it differently from a production guarantee.

Choose local execution when the page contains sensitive data or the agent already has a suitable browser host. Choose a managed workspace when local browser installation is impossible, then validate authentication, network allow-lists and artifact retention before relying on it in a pipeline.
What are the common errors and fixes?
The MCP client shows no Playwright tools
Cause: the server entry is malformed, Node.js is too old, or the client has not been restarted. Fix: verify that command is npx, that the argument is exactly @playwright/mcp@latest, confirm Node.js 20 or newer, then reload the client and inspect its server log.
npx cannot resolve the package
Cause: the runtime cannot reach the package registry or the environment blocks package installation. Fix: test network access from the same account that launches the MCP client, configure the required proxy or registry, and retry. In a restricted build environment, pin and preinstall a tested package version according to your organization’s deployment policy.
The browser opens but navigation fails
Cause: DNS, TLS, authentication, robots or an application-level block prevents the page from loading. Fix: try the URL in the same browser environment, check the client’s navigation error, and verify that required cookies or headers are available. Do not treat a browser error page as a successful screenshot.

The agent cannot click an item it sees in the image
Cause: screenshots do not provide stable interaction refs. Fix: call browser_snapshot, locate the control in the accessibility tree, and use the returned ref for the action.
The file is missing after capture
Cause: the filename points outside the permitted workspace or the client returned the image inline instead of saving it. Fix: use a workspace-relative filename, check the client’s artifact directory, and inspect the tool response to determine whether image bytes were returned inline.
The page changes between runs
Cause: time-based content, personalization, animations or a different viewport/scale. Fix: stabilize the test data where possible, use identical capture settings, and record the URL, time and arguments with each artifact.
How should you handle security, privacy and cost?
Playwright MCP runs a real browser against the URLs you provide. Treat every page as untrusted input: do not paste secrets into an agent prompt, restrict access to internal domains, and review whether screenshots may contain personal or confidential information before sharing them. If authentication is required, use the client’s approved browser-session mechanism rather than embedding credentials in a URL.
The local workflow has no screenshot-service per-image price in the documented setup, but it does consume your own compute, browser runtime and storage. Large full-page images increase transfer and retention costs, especially when you keep multiple formats or high device-pixel-ratio captures.
